Well after an enforced seperation from here due to my computer dying (and my alternative access computer not letting me, well, access!), I am finally back here, after buying myself a new laptop. Let’s hope it lasts! I’ve had the last shell of a computer for 4 or 5 years, and last christmast had to change the hard drive. A few weeks ago, the less than 1 year hard drive died on me. I will get around to returning that one to the manufacturer in due course to see what they can come up with (some kind of refund will be nice!) but we shall see.

Meanwhile I havent been doing any blogging recently, and in going to another blogging site earlier this evening, apparently yesterday was Blogday. Now, having lost my old machine, I’ve also lost many of the blogs that I did subscribe to, so cant follow the random links I tend to choose when looking at these sites.

So, does anyone have any interesting crafting blogs to recommend?

Meanwhile, not wasting time on the computer has meant that I’ve been able to continue with The Wedding. I will get more photos up soon! However, with the nights getting darker now we’re coming into September, I’m glad that I got a large amount of the stitching done during the summer, as it’s now going to get difficult to tell many of the colours apart

Today, August 31st, is the third-annual Blog Day in the blogosphere. To join the celebration, bloggers are asked to post recommendations of 5 blogs with links and short descriptions. Five blogs…five blondes…is this day made for us or what?

Erica’s Nomination:

http://www.thesimpledollar.com/

Personal finance for the rest of us! I love the advice that you can find on personal finance blogs; here’s one of the go-to resources for everything related to money, investing, debt, and saving. Yesterday’s posts included an article on wedding etiquette – addressing issues such as being invited to weddings far away, and making it as economical as possible for out-of-towners to attend your own wedding. Great advice for us!

Micaela’s Nomination:

http://paigesix.blogspot.com/

Though she hasn’t posted much over the summer, PaigeSix has spent the last 3 years chronicling her life and experiences in university – and now in the working world. She never holds back and is a fantastic writer. She went to the same university that I did, and Mic used to ask me jokingly if I saw Paige Six today…

Katelyn’s Nomination:

http://www.dooce.com/

Katelyn first told me about this blog because she found it inspiring – something to model ours after. I find it very interesting – whether Heather is writing about or taking pictures of her dog (who can balance the most impressive items on his nose), her daughter (adorable!), or her extended family (Mormons), she never fails to interest or amuse!

Leah’s Nomination:

http://scottage-cheese.livejournal.com/

Since Leah is moving today and is too busy to participate, I’ve picked an old favorite of ours. Scott Loudoun, aka. Scottage Cheese, is a crazy guy in Victoria, BC who is also a talented photographer. He used to have this obsessive online fan base (check out some of his posts from 2005/2006 when he was getting comments numbering in the hundreds – 747 on one in particular) but he hasn’t updated his blog since May. His photography alone is worth the visit – there is literally days worth of reading and admiring to be done! I highly recommend reading this hilarious account of mistaken arrest in particular.

Lauren’s Nomination:

http://kjerstiwoods.livejournal.com/

This is a joint nomination from Micaela, Katelyn, and Lauren – cute pics of Kjersti’s family, among other subjects!

CELEBRATE THE 3rd BlogDay ON AUGUST 31st

As per BlogDay, here are my five recommendations:

Blog.Pmarca.com – This is the personal blog of Internet pioneer and entrepreneur Marc Andreessen. His blog posts show an effortless brilliance with a forte on insights into creating and running Startups. I’ve read 99% of his blog posts and have learned a great deal.

Carlos Blanco (Spanish) – Carlos is a domain investor with a very open approach to sharing his activities. His blog gives you a strong idea of the Spanish Internet market, value of Spanish domains, and general domain information.

The Conceptualist – Sahar Sarid has proven himself to be a very smart domain investor. Now he’s sharing the wealth of knowledge he’s gained. His posts will educate you on domain investing and current trends in the industry.

IP Law Daily – Like Law? Like it or not, the Internet is no longer the Wild West. As economic interests grow, so are the amazingly complex and interesting legal issues shaping the way we do business on the net. This blog has a good selection of news covering all those conflicts.

Blog Maverick – It’s always healthy to hear all sides of the story. Mr. Cuban, Internet billionaire and entertainment investor, shares his usually harsh opinions on the Internet and related industries. In his posts you learn to understand broader and less popular points of view from a man that has proven to be right more than once.

CELEBRATE THE 3rd BlogDay ON AUGUST 31st

A Wholesome Multidimensional Experience Nine Hills One Valley by Chorus Repertory Theater performed

A Wholesome Multidimensional Experience
Nine Hills One Valley by Chorus Repertory Theater performed at the MetroPlus Theatre Fest was indeed a Multidimensional experience. Here are the highlights of three of interwoven threads that many would be able to easily relate. The play was an intense mix of wholesome entertainment, a crash course on management, and a deeply subtle yogic spiritual process.
Wholesome Entertainment

The performance blended several samples from the traditional and contemporary Manipuri culture to create an immersion into a culture at crossroads. The viewers were settled down during the buildup that showcased spread of the evil. The wailing and the treadmill effects – so familiar in everyday experience – was employed to draw the viewer into the play. The scene depicting the cutting of wrists of Raas Leela performers enabled total immersion. The magical composition of cast, color and cloths reinforced with myriad theatrical elements made the immersion total.
The encounter of the men of wisdom with men of the modern times brought out the satirical and the comic streak within Rathan Thiyam who indeed directed the play. United States invasion of Iraq and the consequent ‘pissing off’ of the locals/Arabs was deftly portrayed within couple of seconds in the most funny manner. A muted mumbling English accent was effectively used to take a dig at the vagueness and chaos of modern times. Inundation by newsprints, with an obsession to report the death and destruction, served as a fitting ambiance to enhance the satire.
Soothing chants and music inter spread with graceful dance and movements amplified by color and costume made the performance a wholesome entertainment.

Crash Course on Enterprise Management

Nine Hills One Valley was not just a entertaining performance but also a demonstrative crash course on business management. For starters, it was 5S in action all the way throughout the play. The play brought out the essence of management buzzwords without uttering them explicitly. Here is a subset of elements covered in the crash course:
Organizational structure. In a typical business organization, the structures created for easy management invariably creates conflicts and inefficiency. In the play, the flexible partitioning effected through light demonstrated the harmony between the parts and the whole. The technique can be directly applied to harmonize the core teams and the support teams and manage the interplay between the visible and the latent.
Leadership In a scene one of the seven men of wisdom wore the blanket in contrast to the rest of the wise men highlighting his leadership. In many real life situations, the contrast between the leader and the rest of the team players is even more trivial. Yet, the contrast is a constant source of conflict and heartburns. The scene could help teams to put leadership in perspective.
Virtualization The pageant of modern men interestingly marked by out of tune zombie walk is a case of effecting more with less.
People and process The execution of the play itself is a celebration of people tuned to process. There were elements of people and process in the content of the play too. Like the traditional practice of use of dhanda ( serpent headed staff in the play) to externalize knowledge and wisdom. And using the staff to rewrite the wisdom in a form suitable for contemporary society.
Passion and Return on Investment. The play demonstrates the link between passion and high degree of attention to details. And the interlink between passion and exponential returns. The transformational touch of the play is the exponential return effected with sparse resources with good measure of passion thrown in.
Homework, Homework, Homework. Elaboration unnecessary. Enough Said.
On the whole, Nine Hills One Valley as a crash course in management is a compelling value proposition in terms of both value for money and value for time spent. It will beat buzzword peddling consultant mentors hands down any day! A key takeaway question from the course: When something as permanent as culture and tradition needs conscious renewal, how can businesses afford stagnation?

An Exposition of Spiritual Progress

Nine Hills One Valley is a Manipuri play. Yet, the language barrier proved to be an advantage to experience the exposition of spiritual progression expressed through yogic symbolisms shared across Indian cultures. The play is a vivid portrayal of the ill effects of disconnecting from the wisdom ingrained in culture and tradition. The portrayal explored the natural cycle of cultural reconnection and rejuvenation. The seven men of wisdom( symbolized by serpent headed staff) undertake a sadhana that wakes them from slumber and makes them transcend the ocean of life. The sadhana – inter spread with penance, chanting, fighting off the evils, invocation and reflection – not only leave them transformed, but also makes available the gift of wisdom and hope to the contemporary younger generation.
The play underscores the need for making traditional cultural wisdom relevant to contemporary society. The two way process in which the tradition and the modern meet half way across the bridge was outlined through juxtaposition of modern day angst with elements of grace and harmony quintessential of traditional wisdom.
The yogic symbolism of the palm – the instrument of mudhra that controls the flow of transformational subtle energy( prana) – was employed to illustrate the disconnect from wisdom. The cutting of wrists scene highlights the ill effects of disconnect from wisdom and the plight of traditional culture reduced to soulless ritual.
The performance climaxed with the modern mothers weeping and singing lullabies to their children expressing their modern day fear uncertainty and doubt. They invoked the men of wisdom who showed up in subtle form of light and hope in the valley thereby bringing the sadhana to closure.
For me, the climax was not during the performance but in the post-performance thanks giving ritual. The very graceful thanks giving was a revelation of and moment of connection with the Adi Guru – the energy that dispels darkness and origin of all art forms.

Note: The above review was sent to The Hindu in response to their call for citizen journalism contribution. Other than automated ack, I have not heard anything from them. Makes me wonder if they really ‘Get’ Longtail. A simple wiki would have made all the difference! As part of my client engagement, I’m checking out IfraExpo 2007 – curious to know how the dead tree media copes with the social media onslaught.

In the good old days, geography was the biggest factor that controlled what you can ‘find

In the good old days, geography was the biggest factor that controlled what you can ‘find’ and access. Even with the advent of faster, cheaper, easier communication methods, the tight coupling between serendipity and geography remained. Mainly due to the the view that communication merely shrinks distances and enlarges the geographic scope as evident from the cliche Location!, Location!, Location! Add faster and cheaper computing to the equation, the game changes drastically. First, the distances are sufficiently shrunk leading to the rhetoric: Geography is History.
Though the distances are shrunk, the vastness remains unconquered. Just like how motorized transportation helped conquer the distance, computing power(with vast persistence i.e., memory) in increasingly employed to conquer the vastness. Google is a good example of a service that combines communication and computing to make geography history and also attempt conquer the vastness simultaneously. Increased reliance on such services has once again starting to control what you can ‘find’ and access. Thus the serendipity offered Google like services becoming the new Geography. Indeed, when Geography is History, Serendipity is the New Geography.

Now if you are a business, especially a small business, you must be curious on how to improve your Location in the new Geography. In other words how to improve your small business serendipity? Simple, Live Your Business Aloud! Embrace Social media. Just record the Zeitgeist of your (small)business in a social medium convenient/suitable for you/your biz. Engage in the conversation. The rest is natural and automatic. Spreading link love is a good way to engage in a conversation.

Today being blogday, let me spread some link love and enrich the geography – serendipity I mean! From my Zeitgeist (mostly)from Blogline subscription.

The Blog would like to take this moment to wish itself, The Blog, and the 100 million or so other blogs out there, a happy BlogDay.

What the heck is BlogDay, beyond being Aug. 31, 2007? Thanks for asking, here’s a quote:

BlogDay was created with the belief that bloggers should have one day dedicated to getting to know other bloggers from other countries and areas of interest. On that day Bloggers will recommend other blogs to their blog visitors.

BlogDay was thought up by Nir Ofir and the festivities can be followed in many ways online. So in honor of this day, here are five blogs, The Blog would love to share:

CommunicationNation, Dave Gray’s great thread on visual thinking.

Typographica, a cool look at type and type issues everywhere.

MediaShift, Martin Glaser’s thoughtful look at how new media is changing society.

Engadget is all about the buzz surrounding the newest devices. Want to talk/think/read about how people use media or will use media? This is the place.

Boxes and arrows, a blog all about the design behind the design.
