My last blog was about perception and to illustrate my point I added a clip from the documentary; the Corporation. I got kind of curious to see what this documentary was all about (I have no idée if it is something that everyone has already seen, but if you haven’t you should!)

I personally think it is a Michael Moore type of documentary… there is a lot of material that I think we as the new working generation should do something with/about, and on the other hand I believe in the way corporations work (something I am willing to explain if asked about…). There is, like I said in my last blog a middle way and that is something that every corporation should look for.

Anyway here is the documentary!

I’ve always sad; there is my truth, your truth and THE truth.

What companies need to be focusing on is my truth. This is what I (the consumer) believe in and it stands for what I perceive to be right. Every tribe however has its own truths and thus perceives the world they live in differently.

A product that is for everyone is for no one. As a company you need to choose a through or perception and communicate that perception.

What I believe is that companies often chose very brought and largely accepted truths to stand behind but as individualism becomes more important it is no longer smart to stand for these largely accepted truths… or is it?!

Is one of the ways to create massclusivity in the world of perception to take a largely accepted perceptions and link different tribes to it? Changing your communication slightly… you don’t lie, or try and cheat the consumers but you just indicate that there are different tribes that perceive the world differently and then say that you understand that perception and do something with it?!

The CORPORATION is a documentary on how corporations do bad in the world. There is one part of it I wanted to show you to say; THIS IS NOT WHAT I MEAN!

I think there is a way to staying true to yourself as a company, and still keeping in mind that there are different perceptions in the world and that a lot of them are OK!

Twenty minutes ago I sat on an ever so vibrant grey chair in the Philadelphia airport contemplating

Twenty minutes ago I sat on an ever so vibrant grey chair in the Philadelphia airport contemplating if I was skinny enough to squeeze under the arm rests and sprawl out for a nap. After I decided that was too much of a hassle, I eyed a row free of the suffocating arm rests and quickly set up camp. 30 minutes later, Chicago-bound passengers awoke me amidst their cheering for some football game on the suspended TV screen. Quickly, I gathered my bags and headed to a quieter spot where now I’m eating a healthy snack of bread and a cookie and eavesdropping on a TSA security debrief meeting.

As I enter 41 hours of the trip back to Vermont, my mind is filled with snapshots that might as well be recorded in this journal. On Thursday, I imagined decompressing from the semester with hot chocolate in Vermont, but that we rerouted to Phili after all my flights were cancelled because of the snowstorm tracking up the East Coast.

Unlike when this happened last year, God has kept my anxiety down and I’ve been able to soak in the quirks of thousands of people stranded in an uninviting airport. The Hampton became my tourist spot and offered a view of the snow-filled parking lot and faint buildings splattered in the background. I’ve never spent the entire day in bed, but what else do you do when that’s pretty much the only furniture in the room? Reading, movies, dinner from the vending machine, and long Skype calls sustained my sanity until late.

I was reminded that small things like a brush and tooth paste make a difference, but nonetheless, I caught a shuttle to the airport the next day chewing gum and untangling my hair. Something about the song “I’ll be Home for Christmas” and seeing all the morning/afternoon flights cancelled didn’t sit right. However, the kind lady on the US Airways phone assured me that seat 15D was in fact mine at 9:05 pm. So, I hid behind a Christmas tree, took a deep breath, and prayed for perspective that would remind me that being in the Phili airport was not Armageddon.

Chris, who was an immense blessing and encouragement, drove from H-burg to kidnap me from people-watching at baggage claim C. Mark and Adria happened to be in Phili visiting family, so we followed my drawing and incorrectly transcribed directions to Mark’s house. We met baby Silas, who slept like any 3-week old baby would, and we had some sweet time with the Weber’s. My all-carb diet was topped off with a vanilla latte from Starbucks and time reflecting on how God is graciously, faithfully, and lovingly working in the lives of us who desperately need Him every day.

The afternoon was a precious reminder that God asks for our hearts to be surrendered to Him – our Joy and Strength. Living on purpose is not supposed to be a spot on a future calendar date..it is somehow for the time spent in this grey vinyl chair and tomorrow, Lord-willing, when I get home to a place where two feet of snow is just a normal Monday.

“Bless the Lord, all you works of His,
In all places of His dominion; Bless the Lord, O my soul!” – Psalm 103:22

Off to gate B11.

Something that is hard to keep in mind when thinking of all the possibilities that you have when launching a new product.

He sent me a TED film (something me knows I look at a lot) where David Pogue speaks about simplicity.

It’s all about being able to talk to different tribal groups (that have different tribal cultures) L

It’s all about being able to talk to different tribal groups (that have different tribal cultures)
Logan (one of the authors of ‘The 3 laws of performance’) argues that there are 5 types of Tribes;

As people see the world, so they behave!

stage 1 – Life Sucks
These are tribes that sever all relations with ‘functional’ tribes and come together to form a different one. Prisoners are an example Logan uses to explain this tribe.

Stage 2 – My Life Sucks
People that say ‘my life sucks’ will have a crappy life & imagine the amount of work that gets done in such an culture… this tribes has to do with people that have a ‘dead end’ job and feel bad for themselves.

Stage 3 – I’m Great (& your not)
this tribe is very competitive. These tribes can be found at places where smart people come together. (fraternities, hospitals, P&G, etc.)

Stage 4 – Were Great
when people come together & find something that unites them that is greater than their individual competence…. Then the group GELLS (A tribe that becomes aware of its existence). OUR VALUES UNITE US

Stage 5 – Life is Great!
Combining lots of tribes in a particular aspect & unite them.

2% of people are at stage 1, 25% of people are at stage 2, 48% of people are at stage 3, 22% of people are at stage 4, 2% of people are at stage 5

Logan says; We move people between stages by putting them in a new tribe & then over time they get connected.

People are all egoists. This is something that is not only something we see in our daily lives but its also something that comes back in every marketing theory I have been reading. Then there is this thing that I heard somewhere… I don’t remember where but it goes something like;

What people want most in their lives is to be missed when they are no longer there.

So even though this is a selfish thing, it only works if the person is part of a group! the group feeling, or ’we’ feeling is something that also comes back in a lot of my reading. I always thought this was a bit strange. the contrast between selfishness and wanting to be part of a group. But this sentence kind of put it all in perspective for me.

So, when working on a marketing campaign, it is important to look at groups (Tribes) and then look at how you can create a form of competition within that group.

This notion is something that I might have known for a long time and is something that happens round us all the time, but it was for me like as if the quarter fell into place.

Where did I get the contrast from?

Selfishness:
- Persuasion marketing talks about hoe people are attracted to scarcity witch I believe to be a selfish trait.
- Speaking is gold talks about how people are attracted to exclusive products this again is something I perceive as a selfish trait.
- Neuromarketing (the book) talks about the old brain. One of the 6 ways into the old brain is selfishness.

The group feeling:
- Buyology speaks about reflective neurons and on how companies use this. This is a ‘we’ thing
- Speaking is gold literally uses the ‘we’ factor as one of the driving forces for people.
- Persuasion marketing uses ‘social proof’ something that had everything to do with the ‘we’ idea.
- And then there is Tribes. This book is entirely dedicated to the ‘we’ feeling.

But what if you don’t have a bunch of photos available for posting? And your camera is broken. You can head to this site SXC.HU. SXC means Stock Exchange.

I’ve been using this site for all my works, from simple photo editing to multi-slide presentations. It has a wide variety of images that you can use and modify. So all my thumbs are up for this site!

Here are a few examples:
