External Blogs as Supporting Blogs for SEO

Frederick Web Promotions is in the business of raising the ranking of our clients company websites in Google.

Companies pay us to get their website to show up in the top 10 search results of Google (and other search engines). We have a team of professional bloggers, experts in social media, web design professionals, off site promotion staff and so on.

The ranking strategy currently used at Frederick Web Promotions is constantly evolving with each update of Google’s complex ranking algorithm. I say “currently” because every 6 months or so Google changes what it favors and does not favor.

What’s Hot Right Now Could Be Paseé in 6 Months

Our current ranking strategy can be summed up in a sentence:

Ranking High in Google is 20% on site optimization and 80% OFF site promotion

Towards this company philosophy we’ve enjoyed quite a bit of success getting our paying SEO clients to rank in Google where they want to be ranked. Untill now I’ve been doing this solo, now I’ve hired a crack team and trained them. In essence I’ve cloned myself:)

I employed a variety of tactics that provided excellent results for the small business clients we handle the online promotion for but I’ve not done “split testing” until now.

Effective immediately we now empirically test each method and will be reporting back  on the main company blog (Frederick Web Promotions) what works well, what works OK, what doesn’t work, how well it works and so on. Actually I’ve begun a “Do it Yourself SEO” section. More on that later.

As stated above, we are of the opinion that the first thing needed to improve the ranking of a company website is to “optimize” or alter the existing website to “make Google like it better”. Often companies come to me with a pretty website that they paid a web designer to build and said pretty website does not “perform” in Google search results.

The most common error I see web designers make is:

You’re writing to the wrong audience, you’ve got to RANK first! Write for Googlebot before you write for humans

 Towards the Off site promotion we tested adding a single blogspot blog and a single wordpress.com blog with one post each to see how much the addition of these extra websites improved the ranking of one of our clients. That’s right I just described OFF SITE promotion as the addtion of what for lack of a better term I’ll call “extra websites“.

We have a client that is a Maryland general contractor serving Montgomery County Maryland, Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Howard County Maryland and Frederick Maryland (where we are). Suffice it to say they cover Mid Maryland and Washington DC metro area. We got them in the top ten of local Google search results for the keyword phrase: “maryland home remodeling” (lower case on purpose because Google’s algo converts upper case to lower case)

So we wanted to improve their ranking for Maryland General Contractors, because our clients not only can do a single kitchen remodeling job but can also do large jobs as well (and they have the resume/ portfolio / testimonials to back that claim up).

Without altering a single thing on the main website, we added 2 blogs hosted on the 2 most popular free blog platforms and added one post each… checked their ranking before and after.

Results of our empirical test of local Google advertising?

Before the test ranking:

#271 in Google

Which is to say they were found on the 27th page in Google when you type in the keyword phrase: Maryland General Contractors, you had to click “next” 27 times, for all practical purposes they were buried deep in the bowels of Google search results

After the test ranking results:

#171 in Google

OK, OK so I’ll grant you that’s no where near the first page of search results but as a test I think it demonstrates pretty dramatically the effectiveness of adding extra websites, external blogs, supporting blogs to improve an existing company website’s ranking.

After one post to the blogspot blog, it is currently ranked #141 in Google,

FACEBOOK BLOQUEA “NO A KEIKO”

No a Keiko es un colectivo ciudadano creado en mayo de este año con el fin de promover un Perú libre de corrupción, en el que se practique el respeto a la democracia y la defensa de los Derechos Humanos. Por ello, No a Keiko rechaza la candidatura de Keiko Sofía Fujimori a la presidencia de la República del Perú, pues la misma representa un retroceso en la consolidación de la democracia de nuestro país.

El lunes 16 de noviembre de 2009, la página de No a Keiko, con más de 12 mil fans en Facebook, fue bloqueada sin previo aviso aduciendo una supuesta violación de las condiciones de uso por parte de los moderadores del grupo. Esta suspensión ha restringido todos los derechos de publicación de dicha página.

Ante la consulta de los moderadores de No a Keiko, Facebook respondió que esta red social tiene políticas para detener formas de comportamiento que otros usuarios puedan encontrar fastidiosas o abusivas, incluso si no hubiera esa intención.

Cabe mencionar que en ningún momento se ha especificado cuál ha sido el comportamiento que otros usuarios encuentran “fastidioso”; es decir, no se ha identificado claramente cuál sería la falta cometida por No a Keiko.

El equipo de No a Keiko está a la espera del fin de este bloqueo temporal para poder seguir comunicándose con sus seguidores. Actualmente este colectivo está presente en diversos espacios de la web 2.0 tales como Twitter (http://twitter.com/noakeiko), Blogspot (http://noakeiko.blogspot.com), Hi5 (http://noakeiko.hi5.com), La Mula (http://noakeiko.lamula.pe),  además de Facebook (http://tinyurl.com/noakeiko).

            So if you visit Wikipedia that often, you’d probably see that it wants people donating again. And can you guess how much they want off people in the US? You guessed it! 7 million dollars! A couple of months ago, Wikipedia wanted us to donate $6m, to keep their site alive. Now it doesn’t tell. Are you really sure they need millions of dollars just to keep Wikipedia alive? Or do they just want money from people so that they can swim in a bathtub in it?

            As you can see, I have a photo of the Wikipedia logo, along with it’s slogan “The free encyclopedia.” Now define “free” since we have to donate. First of all, most of us people just go on that website to learn, research, or follow the curiousity of their heart’s content, not to pay just to view or read something simple. Second, give us a reason why do you want the money and what you’re gonna do with it, besides people and technology, such as “Who?” and “What type of technology?” You guys have no more than 35 employees running the company in the last 8 years, I don’t see why you need to much money just to continue. And third, dude, the economy is in a bad state. Try again in like… 100 years.

There is so much to write about today! Where to begin…

I’ll just go in the order suggested by the headline.

1) New Additions

There are going to be some pretty exciting new additions to The MagaBlog in coming weeks. Truly!

First of all, as you know, we are expecting a contribution from a News21 journalist any day now. I know we keep teasing with the promise of this article, and (on behalf of The MagaBlog), I apologize for the long wait. The lesson learned by us here is that we shouldn’t post information on specific contributors until we’ve finalized all the dates involved.

Second, we are extremely excited to announce a new permanent contributor will be joining us within the next month or so! We’ll share more news as it arises.

3) Streamlining

We are still experimenting with finding the sweet spot between efficient journalistic convention and the informality of a blog. Bear with us. We are striving to develop a system of tagging, posting, citing, and linking. Some aspects of this are easier than others.

We also have some ultimate “streamlining” goals that we know it will take a while to achieve.

• Allow you to begin following us on twitter from our homepage
• Provide tabs that will take you to specific posts, sorted by category. We want to do this in the same way that the homepage would, not like pages would. Think sections of a newspaper.
• Create our own “Theme.” I know: that was vague.
• Set up a system that would allow temporary contributors to contribute an article, without having the same level and permanence of access to The MagaBlog as the permanent contributors.
• Purchase a domain name that would allow us to remove the ” .wordpress” from our URL.
• (Our most fun, and difficult goal) Be able to @reply people from within the text of a post. How fun would that be!?

3) Expanding Our Range

We definitely want to add more types of posts to The MagaBlog. We would love to be able to post critiques, political analysis, etc. without losing our focus as a blog about social media.

I know we’ve written a lot about Twitter, but we have been studying up on many other social media-related topics. We’re looking into Digg, YouTube, Facebook Video, LinkedIn, various blog sites (WordPress, Blogspot, etc.), The Huffington Post, Del.icio.us, and more. While we have been aware, we are observing and analyzing tradition and innovation regarding the qualities they posses and  how they are used. The reason these posts take so long is due to the wide array of topics we can explore rather than a lack of suitable topics.

4) Information

The “Broadway (R)evolution” article will be up just as soon as we can possibly get it up. It may take a week or so.

Feel free to post responses or help to us regarding anything in this post or in any other.

As a side note: Please don’t think we’re being prissy if you see that we’ve typed “theatre,” and please don’t think we’re poorly edited if you see the words “theatre” and “theater” within the same post. “Theatre” signifies the dramatic arts while “theater” denotes the physical structure that serves as a venue for the dramatic arts. Theatre is probably going to become a large sub-focus of The MagaBlog in some way. You learn something new every day, I suppose. Kudos to those who knew already!

Linni Kral’s life force is centered on the taste buds. Flavor, smell, presentation, all those things that go into the beauty that is the culinary art is her playground. This feature is an expository on her love affair with the finer flavors of life, the art of experiencing cuisine.

I’d love to say it started somewhere poetic, like when I cracked the sugary crust on my first creme brulee, but in all honesty, I used to be a huge square when it came to food, and coming out of my white-bread cocoon to become the omnivorous creature I am today took some growing pains.

Raised by a single working mother, Linni rarely experienced the traditional shared family meal and from this lacking arose her acute awareness of how food unites people. And so she began cooking constantly…

bringing together unlikely groups of friends whose commonality rested solely in their love for food. I saw food take people with nothing in common, sometimes not even language, and give them something to talk about. That power is an incredible thing to behold once you realize it’s there, and I’ve never been able to ignore it since.

And so her palate grew. Linni experimented with everything, fascinated with not only the social power of cuisine, but also the eye opening lip smacking expressions of flavor. But inward experience was not enough. Her joy in the social network that food creates spawned a participation in the virtual network through her (now California based ) blogspot Linni Eats World. Here Linni writes eloquently on her food experiences with pictures to supplement her already vision inducing words. As with the completely from scratch PB&J she made seen below…

A lot of people look at food blogs for food porn, regardless of if they plan on cooking the recipes or visiting the restaurants described. As an amateur wannabe photographer, I guess I wouldn’t mind, and would be somewhat flattered, if people came to my page just for that. But ultimately, I want to be able to showcase my writing while also inspiring people to go out and eat amazing shit. I could put that more eloquently, but that’s what it comes down to. There’s so much crap to wade through now that everyone with money who knows how to manhandle a whisk thinks they deserve a restaurant concept. And when people get discouraged, they shy away from the pleasures of eating. That is the last thing I want…

I look at non-foodie friends as projects, in need of conversion. I’m like a Mormon missionary, but for delicious food.

Influences include but are not nearly limited to Ruth Reichl, former editor-in-chief of Gourmet magazine and  Mark Bittman of the NYTimes and many more contemporary food writers and of course the creators themselves, chefs  who have

‘pushed her to run home and write a review faster than she could digest their food’.

Check out her blog, ASAP. Her posts though seemingly long, flow so well your mouth will water. From Pb&J, to California taco trucks, to the example below, you could get really into her world.

And Alinea. The 18-course experiential dining excursion I had here…presented me with concepts no simple mind could even fathom, but [chef] Grant Achatz took it upon himself to create.  [He] served us dishes like kobe beef rib encased in a Guinness sheet and drizzled with pea foam, and the famous grenade-mimicking Hot Potato, Cold Potato: a tiny palm-sized bowl is filled with a cream of truffle soup and has a pin spearing it on a diagonal. At the top end is a very small potato, a slice of black truffle, and a hunk of parmesan cheese. The diner is instructed to “pull the pin” from the bottom of the paraffin wax bowl and down the whole production like a shot. I don’t think I’ll forget what that felt like, from smell to taste to touch to sight, for the rest of my days.

In urma acestei campanii nu exista zi sa nu ii vad – de fapt sa ii aud – de la geamul meu pe respectabilii clienti. Doi dintre ei, insa m-au facut rad cu lacrimi.

Asa ca dupa ce au incercat fara succes sa il indese in toate gaurile care le-au vazut pe bancomat (inclusiv cea de chitante) l-au vazut pe teller (un nene cam la 1.90 si 90 Kg) iesind din spatele bancomatului si spunandu-le ca acum pot folosi bancomantul. Reactia unuia dintre ei a fost “vezi ba c**ie, ti-am zas io ca e unu acolo in spate care iti banii! Ai sa imi dai doua beri!”

Si bonus ca mi-am amintit de baietii de la REBU, tin minte ca aveau conturile la Tiriac (sau HVB Tiriac ca nu mai stiu daca erau “uniti”) si in ziua de salariu se asezau respectuos la coada in fata bancomatului.Peste 50 de oameni. Dar nu e problema ca aveau rabdare. Ca sa nu piarda cumva banii se asezau dinainte sa le intre banii. si la un moment iesea din sucursala o domisoara foarte draguta care se punea ca profesoara in fata elevilor si rand pe rand ei ii dadeau functionarei bancare cardul impreuna cu un postit pe care era trecut PIN -ul. Suma pe care o vroiau scoasa era aceiasi la toti “TOT CE E PE EL DOMN’SOARA”. Si acum imi pare rau de domnisoara aia care trebuia sa le dea banii din bancomat si nu vreau sa ma gandesc ce se intampla daca nu le intrau alora banii. Nu de alta dar veneau direct de la servici cu maturi, lopeti, etc. Unii veneau chiar cu masina de servici

A friend of mine just got me to sign up for this site (Will!) and I just find it rather annoying and hard to use. It’s a lot more complicated than it needs to be. Naturally I will give it a chance but I really don’t think much will come out of it. It’s not like it hurt me to sign up for some blog that I knew I was never going to use.

So all in good intention…. I will still be choosing to blog on blogger.

Starting with my yesterday’s dinner at Golkonda Chimney.

Golkonda Chimney: 42/2 , Kundanahalli Gate White Field
This place is heaven for the Non – Veggies. But for the veggies, u might as well just do away with the soups and starters. Even the normal Kadhai Paneer was a disaster. The Paneer pieces were not even anything close to soft.
Apparently, The Rolls, here are very famous. Generally grabbed for a lunch/Quick bite by people working in the IT Parks in the vicinity. It cost us 1200+ for a sumptuous meal for 5.

Talking about Bad Paneer – I shall introduce the best place for Panner i’ve been so far.

Queen’s : 7, Shrungar Complex, Church Street.
Keep your eyes open cause this dimly lit place can be easily missed. Its diagonally opposite to Oye Amritsar, on the same road as Blossom Book store. A budget rest with just splendid food and decent interiors and no no restrooms et al. Also, they do not serve soups and their masala papad is fiery
I have been to this place a couple of times and never disappointed. Each time i visit, i feel the food tastes Yummy ! The Paneer is a MUST MUST here. Make sure you check the time to land into this rest, 7 – 7:30 pm is ideal if u dont wanna wait.
It can cost anywhere between 300 – 350 for a veg meal for 2.

The Yum Chinese
Though I absolutely Hate the authentic Chinese Food, I am a of the Indianized Chinese.

They have excellent starters like the Crispy veggies and the Potatoe something.
Its ambience is decent too. I love the hangings at the entrance – The Red ones.
An avg veg meal for 2 can cost between 500 – 700

This week’s Old Soul in a Young Man track comes from one of my favorite Hip-Hop producers Ski Beatz. A North Carolina native, Ski Beatz, in my opinion, is one of the hottest most overlooked producers of the 90s. Largely affiliated with Camp Lo, Ski Beatz produced a decent portion of Jay-Z ’s first official album, Reasonable Doubt. Using the classic SP 1200 to produce his tracks, Ski Beatz produces a very dirty yet smooth jazzy sound that serves as a great platter for an emcees entree. Affiliated with Roc-a-Fella’s sister company, Roc-a-Bloc Ski Beatz is the producer behind the Jay-Z classic “Dead Presidents”. Using a beautiful sample from Lonnie Liston Smith, A Garden of Peace, Ski Beatz sculpted a prime example of real Hip-Hop in his studio those many years ago.
