Yes, beans. I know, I know, I had the same reaction..how could that possibly taste good?! I promise you that you cannot even taste the beans. These blondies are definitely a healthy alternative from the original and they taste ahhhmazing! No eggs or flour, but plenty of protein!

The recipe doesn’t yield a ton (I got about 15-20 VERY small pieces), so feel free to increase as needed.

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups chickpeas or white beans (I used 1 can of chickpeas)

1/4 cup of quick oats

2 tsp of vanilla extract

1/4 cup of peanut butter (I used TEDDIEs Smooth because it’s my favorite)

3/4 tsp baking powder

1/8 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

3/4 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup of chocolate chips (vegan chocolate chips, or super dark, or almond milk chips)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

Put all the ingredients (except the chocolate chips) into a food processor. I used a blender because my food processor was broken and they came out OK (still tasty, just not mixed as well..someone may have a full garbanzo bean in a bite!) I still recommend a food processor though

Fold in the chocolate chips into the mix

Pour into an 8×8 greased pan. I used one of those round pans because I could not find my 8×8 pan (clearly I wasn’t prepared for this recipe!) but it still came out great!

Bake for 30 minutes (you can add extra choco chips to the top if you love chocolate as much as me). The blondies will continue to harden once removing from the heat so beware of over cooking
ENJOY!!

Every week we’ll each post three songs that we’ve found particularly intriguing, have recently discovered, or more often than not, a record we just love! For those of you that haven’t worked it out yet that you means you’ll be getting 9 fantastic, new and exciting tracks posted on here every week in which we recommend you take a listen. Here’s this week’s songs with our very own rating system. Yep, you’ve guessed it – a Hashtag rating out of 5!

Jack’s Picks:

Song: Heart of Nowhere Band: Noah and The Whale Rating: ###

I had to include a track from the new Noah and The Whale album which was released just last week, so here it is. It was a toss up between the one chosen above and There Will Come A Time, and despite the latter being the single everyone will be singing along to, I was won over by the string-percussion combo that introduces the album.

Song: Miss Fantasy Artist: Fleetwood Mac Rating: #####

For you quick-witted readers out there you should have realised that the Soundcloud clip above and my second ‘Must Hear Tack’ title don’t match (if you didn’t realise then wake up)! The reason for this simply being that there isn’t a clip for the ever so slightly epic fourth track from Mac’s ’Extended Play EP’, so instead you can listen to the almost equally good Sad Angel. But please do check out Miss Fantasy here.

Song: Sunday Girl Artist: She & Him Rating: ####

This is the second track this week without a Soundcloud clip – so I have put the main single, Never Wanted Your Love, above from She & Him’s brand new record ‘Volume Three’. However, the track from the album, which is so far undoubtedly my favourite, is Sunday Girl - the duo’s take on Blondie’s original from the seventies. Check out Sunday Girl here! Also keep a look out for a post I’ll be doing on the new record…

Matt’s Picks:

Song: Here’s To Never Growing Up Artist: Avril Lavigne Rating: #####

Check out my previous post here for a indepth coverage of my opinions on pop-punk, but if you haven’t heard Lavigne’s new single – where have you been! Such a tune! In my opinion it sounds very Taylor Swift-esc.

Song: Something That We’re Not Artist: Demi Lovato Rating: ####

The new song from Demi, and it is very catchy – but unfortunately it’s nothing special. 4# for trying and producing a good song, but I expect more from her!

Song: Nothing Like Us Artist: Kevin Karla & La Banda Rating: ####

I never thought I would be listening to a Spanish song… let alone it being a cover of Bieber. But, I have to admit, it is a very soothing song, and the fact I can’t understand a word being sung is very relaxing. Definately worth checking out!

Max’s Picks:

Song: Illuminum Song Artist: The Pastels Rating: ####

I must be very honest, and say that this is the first time that I have come across The Pastels, however, following this, I am sure it won’t be the last. A light, upbeat number which leaves me pining for summer evenings spent lying outside somewhere. Who’d have thought a brass section could be used in such a delicate way!

Song: What Could Have Been Artist: Jessica’s Ghost Rating: ####

Jessica’s Ghost are a folk/rock outift from Merseyside, and are known for their eclectic mix of instruments. This is one of their more sombre songs, but one that is still very well composed – allowing the vocals to be the focus of an emotional song.

Song: You Know You’re Right Artist: Nirvana Rating: #####

Yes, I am very aware this is an old song. It is, however, one that has been stuck in my head for the past few days, and I felt I had to share it with you all. A very powerful song written before the death of Kurt Cobain, that only surfaced after his untimely death. It does demonstrate the band at their best and it is a must listen for anyone.

Here’s to breaking out the good china, just for a kids lunch.

I used to have things kept aside for a special occasion. I have always had a penchant for the slightly extreme, out-there fashion. I was inspired by Blondie, Patty Smith, and the demure and sensational Jackie O, but growing up in a culture of conservative-ness in all areas masquerading as humility, I felt some shame at my rather whimsical fashion sense. Now I just don’t give a shit.

It’s funny how life presents different paths for you to take on your journey. It’s even

It’s funny how life presents different paths for you to take on your journey. It’s even stranger looking back on the choices you have made in your life and self analyzing your choices; “Why the heck did I do that!??” or “What the heck was I thinking when I did that!??” are some of the thoughts that cross my mind initially when looking back at my life. Some of the situations or events are funny, some sad and some are just plain depressing or out right confusing!

The one thing all these paths and choices were, at least now as I look back at them, they were relationship ‘Life Lessons’. Did I see them as that at the time when I was steeped in the emotional mire of my earliest meaningful relationship. Nope. I may as well have been Helen Keller: Blind to the situation for lack of life experience and immature; Deaf because I was a young man and couldn’t listen to my own ‘self’ and later on wouldn’t listen to my partner; Dumb, not because I couldn’t speak (Believe me when I say I said enough) but because I was so physically, emotionally and spiritually young! I had no business getting involved in such a serious relationship! What was I thinking!?? (See, there’s that phrase again!)

I met Blondie in high school after failing to gain the attention of her sister, ‘The Little Red-Haired Girl’, who was in my grade. Little Red and I were in the same English class (I believe). I remember one time as class was getting out, in the hallway, Little Red and Blondie were having an obvious argument and I saw it as a chance to save Little Red’s day and it was then that I noticed how beautiful Blondie was. After their verbal spat they parted and I took the opportunity to ask Little Red if she was alright and it was then that she told me Blondie was her sister, and that I should mind my own business. We parted ways and I never looked back.

Blondie, Blondie, Blondie…. Problem. I was pretty much dating another girl and it was actually getting serious or at least she thought so. Truth be told, she was a very nice girl but a Freshman and I thought at the time that Blondie was a better catch! Later on in life, I ran into her and apologized to her for how I acted and how everything ended with us. In hind-sight, she was a better catch, better person and fully dedicated to the man she’s with now. Lesson learned here: Karma’s a bitch.

Blondie and I both had friends that we ‘ran’ with but we were in different circles. I was a Senior and she was a Junior. Neither of us were ‘Jocks’, ‘Brains’ or in with the ‘Hey, lets PARTY!” crowd. It wasn’t that we didn’t try sports or try to get good grades in school or never went to parties that our parents or the police for that matter wouldn’t approve of; Both of us were typical high school kids in the mid 80′s listening Van Halen, Aerosmith, Adam and the Ants and a monotonous list of other 80′s hair, punk and budding alternative rock bands and she really flipped my switch!

It was about a week after the public spat with her sister that I managed to track down where her school locker was and approached her to ask her out on a date and she said yes and agreed to a movie at the local cinema and that’s how my journey with Blondie began.

The summer of ’82 was magical with Blondie at my side and in my arms. My parents still have pictures of us together in the family photo album and looking at them at random occasions takes me back. There’s one photo in particular that a high school friend took of us and I totally recall everything in that moment; the sun highlighting her hair, the crisp autumn air and it’s New England smell and the feeling of the two of us being lost in each others arms. The song “Faithfully” by Journey was our song.

1983 was an exciting year for me as well as a trying year. Exciting in a sense because me and Blondie were still together and I had decided to follow a career in the Military with the idea of either staying in the service or taking what I learned and applying it to a career in the civilian world. I had been accepted physically, passed my ASFAB test for the military but was short a half of a credit to graduate high school due to my lack of care or concern for my grades, poor study habits and general rebellious behavior. I hated Senior year and found no use for it. My path was already determined. I was going in the military with an option for Airborne school.

June 1983 came and I received my orders from my recruiter, I was to ship out in late September for training in Alabama. Blondie and I were still very much together and the stress of the pending separation was starting to work on us and our relationship, what were we going to do!??!

I bought two dozen roses, a promise ring and asked her if she would marry me. She said ‘Yes!’ Then I had to ask her parents. Her parents were okay with the proposal but wanted Blondie to graduate from high school before any plans were to be made. I was in but with an elimination period of just over a year. I remember almost fainting when her dad said yes and later that night Blondie and I were allowed to take her parents station wagon out for our date as my car was in the shop.

The date was fantastic. We met up with some friends and hopped the fence at a local swimming hole and talked the girls into skinny dipping. All the guys striped and jumped in while the girls grabbed our clothes and threw them up in the trees. We had been had! I won’t get into the gory details but we eventually got our clothes back, all the couples parted ways and that was the first time Blondie and I got physical in our relationship. I remember thinking how funny it was that we actually fogged the windows up in the cool early September evening air. Blondie dropped me off and drove home.

The next week, I was to pick Blondie up for a date. It was then that her dad had asked me to explain how there were foot prints all over the back window of the station wagon…you can imagine my horror! Thankfully he never pressed for an explanation. I remember him shaking his head, turning to walk away, cracking a grin as he turned, though I’m still not sure if he found my look of horror so funny or was just happy to catch me in an awkward situation. If we ever borrowed that car after that, we swore to wear socks!

I never did attend my graduation ceremony but did complete high school after my basic training and AIT and had been placed at my first duty station. I had to take a high school English class at a local school near my duty station and after its completion the credits were awarded to me and I was presented my Diploma from my hometown high school.

Sometimes I wish things would have worked out for us but the reality of the situation was that we were destined to fail as a couple right from the beginning and I truly believe it. Part of it was due to our immaturity, secrets she kept from me early on in the relationship that were emotionally devastating to her (and long lasting) and my lack of life experience. There were other things later on in the relationship that added logs to the ‘Relationship Failure Fire’ and I’ll get to them as this progresses when it’s appropriate.

More to come…

Our seventeenth post is another from the good ol’ US of A, and is by Karlie Andrade, who got in touch with us on Twitter. Karlie has this to say by way of introduction: “Hi, I’m Karlie, I’m 26 and currently living in San Diego – but I’ll shortly be moving to the East Coast! I’m interested in production and DJing and just like experimenting with different sounds and combinations of sounds. I hope to have some stuff produced to put online soon. I recently joined Twitter and you can follow my very occasional tweets at @KarlieAndrade. Enjoy!”

Without further ado, then, here are Karlie’s 5 album picks…
__________________________________________________________________________________

• Blondie, Parallel Lines: It was oh-so-difficult to pick only five favorite albums, but while I ummed and ahhed about the next four this one was a complete no-brainer. Girly pop-rock heaven. Debbie Harry’s tough-girl persona (which Madonna shamelessly imitated) is the ultimate in hot rock-chick-ery. This is Blondie’s best collection. The songs throughout are something else, from the big hits (Heart of Glass, One Way Or Another, Sunday Girl, Hanging on the Telephone) to the equally strong album tracks (like Fade Away And Radiate and Just Go Away). Hot hot hot. Nothing more to say.

• Neutral Milk Hotel, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea: OK, this is a really personal record for me with a ton of memories attached – some good, some bad. I won’t go into those. But the album itself is a really personal one too I think, albeit in a cracked and confused sort of way. Jeff Mangum has his anguished moments here – but also moments of intense joy and exhilaration. Sound-wise it’s a mixture. From the gentle opening of King of Carrot Flowers Part 1, all the tracks blend together to the end (as with On Avery Island), but there are clear dynamic shifts and wildly different sonic moments as the album progresses. You get the sense a story is trying to be told – but unsuccessfully – maybe because the teller doesn’t really know what story is himself. So you end up with something sort of bitty and unclear – but full of feeling and passion. That’s how I hear it anyway.

• Aphex Twin, Selected Ambient Works 85-92: Aphex Twin is the recording name of British DJ Richard D. James. This album of ambient pieces was put together from stuff he’d been working on very cheaply while DJing in the UK during the late 80s and early 90s. It’s now considered a classic masterpiece of ambient music. It’s mostly instrumental, with some vocal samples sprinkled around here and there – but the defining characteristic for me is how sparse it is, sound-wise. When you hear it it’s like it creates an open space for the listener to lose themselves in – an open space with very little in it except so much oxygen and room to breathe. Put this on in a small room and it seems like the walls open out. It’s intoxicating. If you need an introduction begin with the 9 minute track 2, Tha.

• Patti Smith, Horses: This is Patti Smith’s immaculate 1975 debut album, recorded at the legendary Electric Lady studios in New York City and produced by John Cale (the Velvet Underground guitarist). It foreshadowed a lot of the punk rock and new wave music that came later and had a huge influence on many major future musicians from The Smiths to Courtney Love to REM. Patti had been a performance poet before this and really this album just fuses that side of her work with rock music. It really is the words which lead everything. Horses was unbelievably original in what it was doing and is rightfully seen as a milestone in popular music history. I can’t really say much else apart from that. It speaks for itself.

• The Beatles, Revolver: Ohhh how I agonised over this!! There had to be a Beatles album in this list… BUT WHICH??? So very difficult to choose just one! Like choosing a favorite child! In the end I’ve picked Revolver because it marks that moment where The Beatles really started to move out sonically and musically from their earlier sound – experimenting with new musical styles, forms of composition and recording innovations. It’s gets almost psychedelic in places (like the final track, Tomorrow Never Knows). But still – even with all this new ground being covered – John, Paul, George and Ringo made a near perfect pop record. It’s a damn brilliant guitar album too!

Okay, cool post there with an interesting range of selections. That’s only the second mention for the Beatles so far on this site, which is perhaps a little surprising, although I think we’ve only had one Stones album at this point as well. Most of you seem to prefer Radiohead et al to the classics. First inclusions here for big names Blondie and Patti Smith. Something a bit more unexpected by way of Aphex Twin and Neutral Milk Hotel. A real good mixture. Don’t forget to follow @KarlieAndrade on Twitter if you want to hear more from her.

You say you don’t know what your feelings are for her then you turn around and kiss her? It sounds like you only want to use her. You’re telling her how pissed you are when she is the victum. This is your fault. Either tell her you love her and make her happy most of the time or telling her you don’t have those feelings and try to talk to her nicely about it. Don’t be mad because SOMEONE ELSE is there for her and you’re not. That is on you. This is ALL on you.

So we all know this track, Heart Of Glass. It had such a huge impact on both the post punk and disco scene when it was released in 1979. But now it has been remixed by Oliver & Thee Mike B and has been given a different feel, it’s not been completely turned upside down, but it feels punchier and obviously more suitable to a club environment. It’s hard with a song as iconic as this to make a remix that’s better than the original, but that’s not always the goal… the goal is to just see what it sounds like when you have a play around I suppose.

Zack Snyder’s 2011 blockbuster fantasy film, Sucker Punch, drew much attention even before its relea

Zack Snyder’s 2011 blockbuster fantasy film, Sucker Punch, drew much attention even before its release date. This attention came in the form of a heated debate between film critics and moviegoers alike who perceived the film to be unapologetically objectifying to women while others, including the films director saw the film as empowering to women.

For those who have not seen Sucker Punch, it takes place in the 1960’s and follows a young woman Babydoll who has been sent to an insane asylum by her stepfather against her will. While being held captive in this mysterious asylum the audience finds that the setting quickly changes to that of a brothel where Babydoll meets four other women (Rocket, Sweet Pea, Amber, and Blondie) who are also being held against their will. The girls appear to be deeply depressed and have no fight left in them to go on surviving. This doesn’t stop Babydoll however, she hatches an escape plan and convinces the other girls to break out of the brothel with her into freedom, thus begins the journey of Sucker Punch.

There are some pros and cons to the film in terms of whether or not it was the ultimate anti-feminist film or if it was actually empowering to women. Upon closely watching this film again and again I have come up with valid arguments for each side, however when it is all said and done I believe that this film was incredibly empowering to women.

Many people thought that the costume selection for the film was offensive and objectified women. To be objectified means to degrade to the status of a mere object. The girls in this film were hardly acting as objects, they acted as survivalist. Adding to that most of the film takes place in a brothel so of course the costuming is going to be sexier than if it were to take place else where and furthermore yes, the costumes were edgier than what the girls wore when they were not in the brothel scenes but where is the offense in that? The actresses and the characters they portrayed in the film were all in their twenty’s. Why are people so offended by women in “sexy” clothing anyway? It’s a part of the characters personality, it’s a part of the world these characters are in. If all anyone saw in this film were the costume selection then they failed to realize what this film was really about.

Another big thing that people did not like about this film was the violence against women and the implied rape scenes. Whenever Babydoll would dance it is implied that she is being violated back in the asylum that her stepfather has sent her too. Her mind is able to close off and take her into a dream like realm even deeper than the realm of the brothel. This is where the battle scenes occur. I think that this film explored this issue in an interesting way. It was never graphic and over the top and yet the message came across. And while many were offended, it is a fact of life that women are victims of such crimes at overwhelming rates.

I think people need to look deeper into this film; it’s easy to judge a book by its cover. We see these young, beautiful women, starring in the film and they wear these sexy costumes throughout it. That’s all a lot of people see in this film and for that reason many people did not even give the movie a fair chance. However, what’s underneath that small almost insignificant layer of this film? What is this film really about and what is the message it’s trying to convey to its audience, the ultimate theme?

This film says a lot of things, perhaps the most important being to never give up. These girls know their situation and they know that the only chance at survival is to escape so they’re willing to do everything in their power to make that happen. They say again and again in the film to never lose their “fight” that they know they so desperately to survive, the fight to stay alive, the fight to keep hope.

If you still think that this movie was pointless and sexist and offensive to women think again. There are girls all over who would disagree; girls who are praising this film even saying that it saved their lives. Tumblr and Twitter pages dedicated to this film and its message. Girls who have fought eating disorder saying that this film saved their life, girls who have been the victim of violence and sexual assault saying that the films message helped them to keep their fight and stay strong. This film has had impact whether you liked it or not. Just take a look at what some girls have said.

So the next time you think about judging this film or you think that you get it, really watch it and get beneath the outer layer of what you see.

It doesn’t seem all that long ago that Zooey Deschanel was the newcomer, wowing film audiences

It doesn’t seem all that long ago that Zooey Deschanel was the newcomer, wowing film audiences. Her musical side-project, She & Him, with alt-folk master M. Ward, has never been taken that seriously. Now she is a powerhouse and you ought to be paying attention to Volume 3 as well. Of course, leading something of a pixie-girl revolution means there are a lot of twee moments on this album, and you can imagine some bright-eyed swaying going on. Waiting by the phone, crying into pillows and collecting four-leaf clovers is going to make most people’s stomachs turn.

Look beyond this, though, and you will find that, musically, M. Ward has given Zooey a brilliant pallet to paint with. The sound has now progressed into a well-polished ode to 50s and 60s pop. It isn’t bubblegum and is hardly ever sexual; surely a positive thing considering the over-sexualised music thrust at teenagers these days. ‘Baby’ sets an early tone of shoop-shooping backing vocals, and sees Ward himself getting in on the vocal action.

She hasn’t got the pipes of Adele or the soulful husk of Winehouse, but Zooey gives her all to every song and is actually more cutting with her words between the squishy teenage-crush clichés. ‘I’ve Got Your Number, Son’ has her calling the shots: “I’m getting restless looking at you…You’re not a man who can understand anyone but you”. Wholly competent and actually a joy to listen to, her voice is alluring and a break from the modern equivalent.

The choruses of most songs on this album will give you a headache after a while but linger with you for a long time. Hook-laden tracks like ‘Turn to White’ and ‘Somebody Sweet to Talk to’ seem lazy and meandering in the verses, but pull you back in with chants of “I want you!” ‘Something’s Haunting You’ nears the next step for this duo. It’s a little darker and more realistic, but all the hard work is undone with the jolly tinkle of a xylophone. However, on ‘Together’ you find yourself fully on-board with the phrase: “We all go through it together but we all go at it alone”.

There isn’t anything musically profound here, it’s just an altogether more cohesive and better produced sound than before, adding an orchestral cushion and the odd trumpet blast. Everything takes a back seat to Zooey, and why not? She has a hit TV show (the sponsor from which might prompt viewers to buy the Blondie cover here), but you shouldn’t write this pairing off. If you can put aside the Hollywood image, there is a thoroughly enjoyable album in it for you.
