They then led us down to the blowing floor where about 20 “Glass Masters” sweated around a big furnace that dominated the room. They were all bustling around doing something or another, some with crazy looking glasses, one with a rat tail that could have strangled a man (likely all on its own), and all either emaciated or quite robust. A very beautiful but terrifying woman in a big fur coat (even though it was sweltering inside the building) was running about multitasking hurling insults at the men and delivering a never ending stream of beer to them, likely how half of them got so robust.

We were told that because there were so few of us, we would be allowed to create two pieces of our own to take home with us. The word “create” is used a little loosely here, they did most of the creating, we got to help at a few key stages and pick the colors of glass, but it was still really cool and fun. The first thing we did was a kind of vase looking creature where we got to pick a color of glass, then a pattern for the outside of it, they got it all queued up and we got to come up on the platform and blow at the pole thing till they said stop.

That got whisked off and then we got to make what we had all really come for, beer steins!

The head Glass Master asked the group if we would like to do a small .3 litre or the larger .5 litre glass. The group all looked at each other then burst out laughing at the hilarity of any of us EVER opting for a smaller option, us all being a pretty “go big or go home” kind of crowd. We got to pick the color of the glass and of the handle, pick the design on the outside again, and then they would blow the main glass and let us put the handles on, which was pretty cool.

You aren’t doing it right if you are doing it with a straight face…

After that we all went to cool off in a nearby barn where they served us a traditional Czech meal of goulash, dumplings, and a warm potato salad kind of thing. We had cheap beers and guffawed the afternoon away. At one point someone notices someone is out skating on the frozen lake outside the window, which one of the group leaders identifies as Mr. Miagi *cough* I mean our Resident Director, Jan, also known as my Spirit Animal. We come to find out that Jan is the foremost expert on ice skating frozen lakes around the Czech Republic and it is a wild passion of his, I assume something he took up after swearing celibacy and becoming a monk/ninja of the League of Darkness. He has published a book on the topic, and we come to find out that the shoes he wears at all times are like winter Heeleyz, you can snap ice blades onto them and go skating just like that. This man is like the Dos Equis guy, but cooler and more mysterious…

We ended up leaving the pieces there because they have to slowly cool down in a special furnace made for that sort of thing. We haven’t gotten them yet, but the entire group waits with bated breath to drink a whole bottle of beer out of a stein we helped make!

Using my new not-so-sick-clarity to get some of these stories out, I swear I’m catching up!

I was sitting in the bus, thinking about light… Remembering the one time I was in the balcony, it was a bright and sunny day, I was helping my mom dry the clothes. I went back into the house, to see nothing but black and some yellow spots here and there.

It made me quite dizzy and kind of lost, even if the effect lasted for just a few seconds.

And after remembering that small scene, the poem just struck to me like lightning. It’s a short poem. But its amazing that you could make a small memory turn to something beautiful…

The art of glass blowing is very old in Majorca; we would have to go back to Roman times.

The Glass we do in Mallorca can be perfectly compared for its quality with the famous Murano glass.

The process of glass blowing consists of placing an iron tube (normally between 1 meter to 1.45 meters long) into a mass of molten glass ( around 1200 ºC to 1600 ºC), and blowing down the tube inflating the glass as through it were a balloon.

The glass is composed of silica sand, sodium carbonate and limestone.

It ´s revolved on the tube while the molten material is pulled into the desired shape with tongs.

The tools used on the process of glass blowing will be iron tubes, tongs, blades, tweezers and scissors.

When the glass piece has the desired shape, they separated the piece from the blowpipe, twisting the piece with a blade.

Once the glass piece has been made, the temperature is decreased progressively in the furnaces, to avoid breakage or cracks due to sudden temperature changes.

If we talk about Majorcan glass history of course, glass was produced in Mallorca back into  the roman times.

In the sixth century, in Mallorca the glass production was following the byzantine rule, and so they went into the Moorish dominance.

After the conquest of Mallorca by King James I,(aragonese king), it´s when the industry truly flourished and one of the first furnaces is dated 1327 in Calvia (south coast of Majorca) own by Bernardo and Guillermo Roig.

1605 Domingo Barovier, asked for asylum in Mallorca, begging the mallorcan authorities for refuge for himself and his family, and offering them to make glass in Mallorca.

Early 18^th century (1719) arrived to Mallorca, a catalan glassware merchant, Mr. Gordiola and applies to municipal government for a license in order to built a glass furnace, nowadays one of the most famous and traditional glass blow factories in Mallorca, located on the road going to Manacor, close to Algaida.

 During the Middle Age in Mallorca, the superstitious, believed that glass helped to cure nervous diseases, keep away the ghosts and attracted the rain.

Spain Just Issued a Warning: the System is Blowing Up Again

At this point it is clear that Europe is totally finished. The house is burning. It’s just a matter of time before it collapses.

Indeed, we get a clear signal of this from Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who just announced the following: “It is not enough, there are no green shoots, there is no spring.”

To understand the significance of this statement, you need to know a bit more about Rajoy and European politics in general.

Rajoy is the same political leader who, throughout 2012, stated time and again that the Spanish banking system was in great shape. Indeed, he was still claiming, “there will be no rescue of the Spanish banking sector,” a mere week before Spain’s entire banking system collapsed.

Rajoy then demanded a €100 billion bailout from the EU (Spain’s entire banking market cap is just a little over this). It was only then that he admitted that 2012 would be a “bad year.” Of course, he also claimed that the bailout was a “triumph” and celebrated by hopping a plane to watch Spain’s soccer team play Poland, but that’s a story for another time.

Given that Rajoy has only admitted Spain is screwed at times when the entire system is going under, we have to ask ourselves… How BAD are things that he just admitted, “there are no green shoots, there is no spring”?

   ”I was blowing bubbles.” The judge then called in duck number two and asked him the same question. “Judge, I was blowing bubbles.”

    He then called in duck number three and said, “So let me quess — you were blowing bubbles too?”

Our new best friends… tissue packages

Yep, tissue packages.

We’ve gone through about 50 of them over this last week.

Granted, Corban can only touch a tissue to his nose ONE time before it’s “too dirty” to use again… whereas I (Marcy) can get a good three nose-blows of use out of one tissue before grabbing another.

From the onset of this cold, I’ve been telling myself, “I’m getting over it.”

And I thought it was true.

The first two days consisted only of complete exhaustion.

Ah, no big deal.

The next two days added a head ache. Ick. But I can still breathe.

Then a day of coughs. Just one.

THEN came my personal need for kleenex. I’m on the third day of nose-blowing madness and hair-pulling stuffiness.

Ich bin krank!

But that’s enough about me.

Corban got it first. He began to cough while he was sleeping. I remembered hearing about rubbing vapor rub on feet and covering with socks… so I tried it and WAH LAH! He was cough-free! It was incredible! On the third night, however, he needed two vapor rub treatments and was still coughing… which is when I remembered something about a cut open onion in a room… so I put on in and… WAH LAH again! He immediately stopped coughing and has been “golden” ever since.

Hannah got the cough mildly… which is unusual for her. She typically gets each cold with the voracity of a person who needs to experience every life moment to its fullest… even sickness. Well, her day… errr, night, came. Last night vapor rub and onions were outmatched by her aggravation over coughing. She was up four to five times coughing… then YELLING at how upset she was that she was still coughing. After prayer, tears, another couple of our tissue friends, a teaspoon of honey, another vapor rub treatment… and a teaspoon of our much hoarded, liquid treasure… children’s ibuprofen (which we have yet to find here), she was able to go back to sleep for a good four hours. She was MUCH better today.

Matt and Liz each had about one day of coughs and icky feelings. They have crazy immunities… living and breathing among carriers of all things germy each day of their lives. There’s some definite benefit to that.

Jeremy even less so (praise the Lord!) He felt tingles here and there… but stayed relatively free of the cold for the most part… God’s mercy since subs are super hard to come by here.

Back to me… It all began last Tuesday during practice for an Intercultural Service at our church… where I would be singing at least one, if not two, songs. By the end of practice (in which they’d given me FOUR songs to sing in)… I had little to no voice.

But I was determined.

This cold-that-I’m-recovering-from would not out-do me! Come cough, snot, or exhaustion… come charlie-horses in the neck, aches in my back and head, or neti-pot malfunction… I would have a voice on Sunday!

And Sunday came… and I survived it. It was an amazing service… filled with at least eleven different languages, spoken through song, scripture readings, and prayer. I helped lead songs in English, Spanish, German, Korean (ha!), and even Sign Language. People came dressed in attire representing their stomping grounds. It was beautiful. Then Sunday night came and my purpose for being well… my main purpose, dwindled.

And I had a pity party. Just a short one. But I let myself feel frustrated that this sickness was still going, in spite of allllll of my best home remedies… and I’ve got some good ones.

And we miss Dr. Matt. He could help cure anything. WE MISS YOU, DR. CURRY!!!!!

It’s Monday. I’m feeling better. Hannah is sleeping, so far without coughing or yelling in agitation.

And I’ve gotten an email that I’m singing next Sunday.

This is the life of living in a land with foreign cold viruses, lots of germ-sharing, and life-lived indoors and out of the cold. We hear that after this first year of acclimating to the local germs, the colds don’t come as often. Here’s hoping! That being said, we’ve only had two of the three+ colds that have passed through the community… and none of the flus. YAY!

So, with purpose renewed, we tread on… hopeful that “this too shall pass” and unhindered (for long) by these snot-demons.

Praying for health and wholeness for all of our loved ones as well, wherever in the world they may be.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

To honour the day, I thought I’d share some “interesting” Cupid images that aren’t likely to get you any nookie, but may get a raised eyebrow…or smile, depending on what sort your Valentine is.

Peculiar Cupids

I originally thought I’d share this vintage V-day card image on Zen and Genki, but upon closer inspection, the featured fairy had just the right peculiarity of character to warrant sharing her here on the dark side, instead.

Yes, the ambiance of the card is lovely, the flowers beautifully done and fairy wings unique enough to  really grab your attention and remark on their detail.  But then, one notices the cherub-esque child.  Something about the face, body and hair just don’t match up. Is it a girl? A boy? And just how old is this Cupid, anyway? The face seems oddly aged, yet that’s most certainly a little being’s body. Cute…but strangely peculiar at the same time.

Of course that’s nothing compared to this gem of a card that promises impalement for the holiday (who knew Cupid’s arrows drew blood?!)

Then there’s this little “darling”…where to begin?

And just when you thought things couldn’t get weirder*…

 All those hearts and flowers are bound to make you hungry. Why settle for sweets when you can whip out your handy dandy cauldron and…well…

Perhaps a good old fashioned box of chocolates isn’t such a bad idea, after all.

*No, this one’s not a cupid, exactly. But she fits, quite nicely, into the post, methinks.

The story of this gift falls into the latter category.

My father and I have a strange relationship – not the ‘incest is best’ kind, but the kind where when we’re in a room alone together we avoid eye contact, make reference to the news and wait for the awkward silence to settle before I go and look for mum. It’s not that we don’t get along. It’s more that we treat each other like an extra piece of genitalia that we don’t know what to do with. That is,  occasionally we like to acknowledge one another’s existence by tentatively prodding and poking.

Each year on my birthday when I would visit the parentals,  he would look at me sheepishly, pull out his wallet, hand over some money and mutter ‘Happy Birthday’ under his breath.  So I was confused when the year of my 24th birthday, he presented me with a gift. An actual real life, wrapped gift. PHWOAR.  My mind, was blown. The box was about 30cm long, 5cm thick and 6cm wide. All I could do for the next 10 minutes was look at it, and then back to dad, back at it, and then back at dad. I took a deep breath and began the unwrapping.

A stick with holes. A stick. With holes. A. Stick. With. Holes. A STICK WITH HOLES.

A wooden flute.

I feel like now is the time I should tell you two things about me:

1) I have never learnt how to play a musical instrument
2) I had not expressed a desire to learn how to play a musical instrument
3) On my fridge, one of the things I had listed NOT to do was learn how to play a flute.

I picked up the flute and viewed it over, put my eye over one end and peered down the cylinder. There was no light at the end of the tunnel. Simultaneous thoughts crossed my mind. My father doesn’t love me and if I never learn how to play this thing, at least I can practise my blowing technique.

My guess would be that mankind is sitting and least ring in its own filth that we are merely a shadow coasted from the harmful or worldly materials that we have buried ourselves in, and if we were to remove the trash, we may not be able to sustain our existence of our shadow world once the objects Taft make our world disappear leaving mankind unable to exist naturally.

Also this:

The beauty and possibilities that apparent chaos can reveal once a shining light is added…so many possibilities with shadow art. Even nature can reveal hidden beauties or horrors when light is shone over the darkness.

Sometimes jarring,  always breathtaking, Shaden has said that in her pieces she attempts to “place herself within worlds…where secrets float out in the open [and]…the impossible becomes possible” [1].  Undeniably, she accomplishes this with a gifted hand.

As an energy source, wind sucks almost as hard as it blows.

The limits of wind power were confirmed last week when SaskPower customers consumed a record amount of electricity, eclipsing a record set just a week earlier. Previous records were set in 2011, 2009, 2008, 2004. … Our demand for electricity just keeps going up.

Most of these records are fuelled by electricity from the corporation’s coal-and gas-fired power plants. Had we been relying on windmills last week, say, we’d have frozen in the dark.

You might have noticed that the frightful cold of recent days often was unaccompanied by even a breath of wind. I draw your attention to the photo of the Queen Elizabeth Power Station in Saskatoon, shot last Thursday morning when the temperature neared -37 C. Notice the billowing chimney smoke. It’s going straight up. If the wind isn’t blowing hard enough to move chimney smoke, it’s not going to spin a giant wind turbine.

SaskPower has two modest wind farms in the somewhat windier south of the province capable of contributing about 160 megawatts to the provincial grid.

That’s a little less than five per cent of the corporation’s generating capacity. On days when the air is still, however, as it often is on the coldest winter days, wind contributes nothing to the grid.

Wind turbines also are shut down when winds are too high, usually about 70 km/h. We can’t rely on them. Not that it’s relevant in Saskatchewan, but that’s why steamships took over from sailing ships.
