A cappuccino for Debbie

Fridays are one of the more challenging days of the week. There are 5 lunches to create. As I’ve said before, this is Debbie’s turf. She is the Goddess of Lunches. I just fill up their water bottles and make Debbie a cappuccino. I think they had BLT sandwiches. Actually, Theo had a BL, Sam had a BLT, Henry had a BL, Simon had just a B and Ollie had a hard boiled egg. At pick up Theo said , “Guess who has the best lunches in my class?” I said, “Jack O’Rourke, Chunky’s Kid?” He said, “No, Me!”

There’s pick up at 2 campuses, cello, swimming and tennis. Don’t ask me who has what, just tell me who needs to be picked up or dropped off at what time and chances are the right kids will get there or get home. 2 days ago Grandma Carol or GC as the boys call her picked up Sam and Henry from tennis the other night. They came traipsing in stinking of sweat. I was getting dinner ready, Debbie was on the phone. I kept asking everybody, “where’s Theo?” No one answered my question. I kept on getting dinner ready, Debbie was still on the phone. I asked again, “Where’s Theo?” Oops, I guess he was left behind at the tennis courts. No worries, GC to the rescue.

I heard a whimpering sound while making Ragu sauce this evening. Simon had got into puppy no name’s crate and could not get out. Actually, he didn’t want to get out. The whimpering sound was just him making dog sounds.

So Friday is over. Our friend Bruce is over testing some Thanksgiving wines. Ollie is sleeping over our friend Jakki’s house. The kids (we are too) are watching an episode of Johnny Quest. We got a fire going. There were great waves today and the ragu was pretty good!

Why is it that I remain so certain that the milfs still discuss me?

Ok, I’m willing to accept it might not be in amputee_milfs itself, I know for a fact there are more than a few members of that community that are more than tired of me (so, why they even stay is beyond me — “it’s just LJ, it’s just an LJ community, it doesn’t matter, it’s not important” — well, then, GTFO and you don’t have to hear from me anymore, dur hurr hurr).

Well, let’s look at some logic.  Back in August of 2008, Starla filed, and won, a DMCA against getoffmyspace, resulting in some posts about her being removed and any mention of her forbidden.  The very same day she became a “do not mention” topic in GOMS, amputee_milfs was started, in secret, solely to continue Starla discussion (GOMSers hate it when you get the better of them).  Now, what did I do?  More than getting a few posts removed, I got every member booted, got the communities locked down permanently, and got getoffmyspace and goms_sux to close down for about 5 months or so, during which time I created new and better snark communities that did exactly what GOMS did, only better.  Twice.  Not to mention the fact that I made virtually everyone in the community look like idiots for failing to catch the rather obvious goombatree = dorianthorn connection.

But they never discussed me at all, right?  Look at this screen cap from goms_sux, see for yourself how much they “didn’t discuss me”.  And that’s not even from amputee_milfs!

On March 31 of 2009, 108 posts, and more than 4000 comments, allegedly about me, were deleted from amputee_milfs.  That would be the point at which I, allegedly, became a “do not mention” topic in amputee_milfs.  However, just a scant two weeks before that, constituent, moderator of milfs, created at least two new communities, bare_mattresses and some_rakes.  Both of these communities, barring a few posts right in the beginning, remain dead to this day.

Follow the logic.  Removed from milfs, but only after new communities were created… Starla remains a constant topic in milfs, after merely forcing them to pull down references to her in GOMS… is it really such a leap of logic to surmise that somewhere the milfs who were “obsessing over me” have a new community, forum, whatnot, reserved for discussion about me?  Of course not.  And, knowing the milfs as I do, it’s a virtual guarantee that that’s exactly what they’ve done.  After all, constituent took these two screencaps back on October 8th.  If he didn’t post them to milfs… he certainly posted them somewhere.  Because that’s how the milfs deal with things, they huddle and hide and post comments.

Which, in fact, brings me to another point.  While that screencap from goms_sux is entertaining and informative, look at this comment in particular.

You see that?  She said: “nor will I sit back and take what he does against me like a little bitch”

Um… actually, that’s exactly what she’s done.  That is, in fact, exactly what all the milfs have done.  Every last one of them.  They have retreated, retreated, retreated.  They locked profiles, communities, MySpaces, Facebooks, LiveJournals, Twitters.  Changed usernames.  Deleted accounts.  Used sock puppets to even join amputee_milfs.  Not only have they universally taken everything I’ve done against them like little bitches, they’ve also been falling back and giving ground since Day 1.  This is the equivalent of me saying “you gonna get raped” and they simply say “ok”, then lay back and spread their legs.  They’ve taken everything I’ve done against them, swallowed it all down, every last bit I fed to them, no matter how rough I played.  They took it all JUST like, as alcoholiday said, little bitches.

And really, even if they do have some other hidden community somewhere, what are they doing, snarking pictures of my weener again?  The same pics I gave them in the first place?

*gasp* look, milfs!  IT’S MY WEENER!!  Oh noes, what shall I ever do?  You all act like you’ve never seen one before.  But then, I can understand how you’d all be so enthralled with mine… it is rather impressive.  You make such loyal fangirls…

All that said, it would be quite easy to declare myself the winner in all this 1000 times over.  Wait, “winner”?  Generally, for there to be a “winner” there’s some sort of contest first, and they have yet to put up any kind of fight at all, except to try and pretend none of it ever happened in the first place.  Winner by sheer forfeit, maybe.  And, actually, outside of amputee_milfs, and a few stragglers in goms_sux, most of the Internet declared me the winner more than a year ago…

But, a guy’s gotta have a hobby… and the piggies are mine.  They volunteered for that, after all, even after I told them ahead of time exactly what would happen…

Last week, the Martha Stewart show aired an episode focused entirely on cheese — cheese from Vermont, to be precise. Emeril has been to Vermont recently as well. We’re tickled to see the celebrities discover what we discovered ages ago (you know, way back in August) … namely, that Vermont makes some damn good cheese. So much so that I wore myself out recapping my Vermont road trip and never got around to posting the final installment of my travelogue, our visit to Fat Toad Farm in Brookfield.

I discovered Fat Toad at the Vermont Cheesemakers Festival; their rich and creamy goats-milk caramel sauces, made in the tradition of Mexican cajeta, provided one of the sweeter complements to the many samples of cheese on display. Their fresh chevre was refreshingly pure and tangy. As I chatted with Fat Toad’s Josey Hastings, she mentioned that they were located not far off of I-89, our planned route back south to New York. Because of our rush to get to the festival on Sunday (after driving from Virginia to Albany, via Queens, on Saturday) we hadn’t built in much time to visit any farms but hoped to at least stop by one before leaving the state.

The next day, we decided to spend some time enjoying Lake Champlain and got a later start back on the road than anticipated. I called the farm and was cautioned that they were beginning evening chores, but would try to give us a quick tour. As we navigated the country roads to the farm, we passed rolling hillside meadows full of dairy cows, including those of Neighborly Farms. It was the sunniest day yet of our road trip and a perfect day to take in the Vermont countryside. When we arrived, Josey had extracted herself from putting up zucchini and graciously gave us the full tour. The quaint farm didn’t take long to navigate, as they are a small, family-run operation with about 40 Alpine and Saanen dairy goats. It was milking time, so we missed out on seeing the goats frolicking in the meadows but got to visit with them as they awaited their turn in the milking chamber.

Josey and her family produce most of their own food on their property, including a few pigs (who are fed excess whey, naturally) and fresh produce. The maple for their maple chevre comes from a neighbor. They’ve been making cheese commercially for only about two years, and have clearly developed a winning formula for high quality fresh chevre. The mild cheese can be used as a dip or spread (try on bagels in place of cream cheese), or in recipes like their Fat Toaders’ Caramel Goat Cheese Swirl Brownies.

The caramel sauces come in several flavors, coffee bean, cinnamon, vanilla bean, and original — and if you’re like me and can’t pick just one, you can order a gift box of all four. I bought several for holiday gifts and already gave one away to our hosts in New York; the jury is still out on whether the others will actually be gifted or remain tucked away in my pantry. (Perhaps I’d better order another set to be safe.)

Incidentally, my new secret to the best BLT sandwich you will ever have? A generous schmear of Fat Toad Farm maple chevre in place of mayonnaise.  Pure bliss.

The Ghost of the Swan

Last week, on an unseasonably cold Friday night, I headed out to meet Michelle for a very exciting experience…my first banh mi. If I am going to continue to call myself a sandwich blogger, I know it’s crucial that I expand my sandwich tasting horizons, especially for a somewhat “trendy” sandwich. Because I like to do a lot of research, I clearly read more articles than necessary about the banh mi so I would be adequately prepared for the experience. If you are like me, and you like a little background with your sandwich, read this enlightening article from the Times about the banh mi craze in NYC.  In my research, it became clear that there were a wide variety of banh mi, but it seemed that some of the most traditional ones included some ingredients that made me a little squeamish, such as pate and like anchovies (or something). I was frightened, but dedicated to soldiering on. After all, it was clear they knew what they were doing when created this popular sandwich.

Michelle suggested that we try one of the places mentioned in the article – Banh Mi Saigon Bakery, which is incidentally located in the back of a jewelry store in Chinatown, giving it that extra feeling of food adventure. However, due to a particularly engrossing cleaning binge, I was a half hour late and the bakery was closed (7pm on a Friday) so this may be more of a lunch destination. Not willing to let this setback keep us from our sandwiches, we headed down the street to Paris Bakery, where I decided to order the roasted park banh mi for $4(!!!), an amazing sandwich price in NYC.

The actual sandwich was on a longish crusty baguette that was still perfectly soft. The roast pork was flavorful, with a surprisingly spicy a little kick. The first two bites overwhelmed me with their heat but after that, it was much more tolerable and even delicious. The hot pork (that’s what she said!) was nicely set off by the pickled vegetables in the sandwich which made it kind of sweet and tangy.  I felt that what the Times article said about it having the same pleasures of a great BLT was very true – I like the hot and cold contrast in the sandwich, but it also included a very distinctive Asian influence.

Overall, my experience with the banh mi was delicious and satisfying, and I can’t wait to try another one!

Just because you don't know who he is doesn't mean that he didn't do a great job.

I don’t think that Ratchet was anybody’s favorite Transformer.

When you talk about Transformers, you think about Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. But nobody really says much about Ratchet. While the other Autobots were out saving the world, Ratchet was back at the base, waiting to fix his injured friends. He wasn’t much to look at — just an ambulance; not a sports car or a big truck — but there was nobody who did what he did as well as he did it.

Well, Hot Off the Grill is a little like that. At first glance, it looks like a run-of-the-mill diner — the kind that sells burgers and sandwiches and dinner combos. It’s standard, everyday fare that you can find for cheap all over the United States. But I have to say that under the white-bread aesthetic of HOtG lies an undeniable and irresistible attraction factor: flavor.

I had the BLT. The BLT was great — just enough mayo to keep the sandwich from being too dry, but not so much that you experience chest pains. They were way generous with the thick slices of perfectly crispy bacon, and they didn’t bulk up the sandwich with lettuce to make it look like you were getting more – gotta love that balance of flavor means more than perceived value to HOtG.

My friend had the Chicken Salad with Greek dressing. The dressing was good; standard Greek. The thing that really stood out about the salad was the sheer volume of chicken.

Most chicken salads give you a few sad strips of flavorless, dry chicken breast on top of a mountain of lettuce. HOtG’s offering gives you a veritable treasure trove of moist, perfectly-seasoned chicken breast on top of a manageable amount of salad. The salad-to-chicken ration was perfect – perhaps a little heavy on the chicken, even. Now, that’s what I call value.

We also shared a generous side of fries – hot & crispy, just like a diner fry should be.

Hot Off the Grill might not be accused of doing something new, but it does the same old routine much better than the average diner. Much like Ratchet, it ain’t much to look at. But when it comes to flavor, there’s definitely more than meets the eye.

Sungguh indah dan nyaman rasanya, kalau punya blog yang bertitle “.com” (baca = dot com). Hehhhm Mantaaaap Niaaan.. Hurray Hurray it’s National Sandwich Day!

Officially it is the day on which the creator of the humble sandwich was born – John Montagu better know to the world as the fourth Earl of Sandwich. As the story goes he was gambling and didn’t want to leave the table. One assume he was winning a loser might want an excuse for a break. The Earl ordered one of his servants to just “slap some meat between two slices of bread”.

Apparently that started “I’ll have what he’s having” trend, which led to the shorter version “just give me a sandwich”. 

Whether you are into the diagonal cut or prefer right angles, like the crusts cut off – or ate them first because it was the best part, or always stole the heel from the loaf of bread – here is to the humble sandwich… how far you have come.

So in honor of National Sandwich Day I have some pictures of the most popular and infamous sandwiches.

JAKARTA – Dengan alasan darurat, Menteri Keuangan (Menkeu) Sri Mulyani meminta Badan Panitia Anggaran (Banggar) DPR RI untuk menyetujui dana perbaikan pagar istana presiden dan wakil presiden sebesar Rp 22 miliar. Menkeu juga meminta Banggar menyetujui anggaran pengadaan pesawat VVIP untuk presiden sebanyak Rp 200 miliar.

“Harusnya ini masuk dana kelembagaan/kementerian, tapi karena situasinya berubah begitu cepat, sehingga mau tidak mau harus ada penggunaan dana 999,” kata Menkeu dalam rapat kerja dengan Banggar, Selasa (3/11).

Dijelaskan Menkeu, anggaran Rp 22 miliar itu tepatnya diperuntukkan bagi pembuatan pagar dan security system di istana presiden serta wapres. Ini kata Menkeu, terkait dengan upaya menjaga keamanan simbol negara dari target teroris.

“Dulu yang jadi target adalah tempat umum. Sekarang pemerintah jadi sasaran juga. Setelah dilihat keamanan istana tidak layak, maka Menkopolkam dan Mensesneg mengusulkan untuk perbaikannya. Setelah hitung-hitungan, dapat angka itu,” ucapnya. Sedangkan untuk pengadaan pesawat VVIP, lanjut Menkeu pula, hal itu juga mendesak karena Garuda meminta secepatnya untuk pencairan karena ada pihak lain yang akan menggunakannya.

Anggota Banggar sendiri menyetujui dua pos anggaran tersebut disetujui. “Ya, demi keamanan presiden dan wapres. Kalau untuk pesawat okelah, biar presiden kita bergengsi juga karena menggunakan pesawat bagus,” celetuk salah seorang anggota Banggar. (esy/rie/JPNN)

All proceeds go towards The Parkdale Players’ production of David Mamet’s Speed-the-Plow, playing in Montreal from November 18th – 22nd.  Funds raised will go towards rights aquisition and production expenses for the play.

Well, here we are in November. Time for fall activities, turkey, maybe a bit of snow, AND apparently its time for the BLT floodgates to open and pour down on us undeserving souls. As you all may know, traditionally the Buffalo Laboratory Theatre would be about half way into a production in the first week of November. Of course, this changed when they decided to participate in ‘Curtain-Up!’, and so now here we are without a November BLT show. HOWEVER. It would appear that the BLT have not entirely forgotten their early November presence. This week, a boatload of BLT content has hit the net. Let’s take a look at this piece by piece.

First, we had a few emails that there had been another FTP leak. This time the leak reveals what appears to be a poster for a forthcoming BLT show, and an unannounced one at that! This minimalist poster for Cyrano seems to indicate that they are positioning it at their next show (opening in February). A fresh take on the classic love story of Cyrano de Bergerac, just in time for Valentines Day? Touché BLT. Touché. This is also seemingly confirmed by the BLT’s ‘flickr’ account, which has finally been updated from Machine Stops, and now has the periodic symbol for Cyrano with a “2″ under it indicating the second show. In addition to the date we seem to have a confirmed cast for the production, with BLT Artistic Director Taylor Doherty once again taking to the stage, this time withe BLT mainstays Golde and Ray Boucher! Who’s playing whom, we have no idea yet. We here at the BLT Bombshelter plan on having an upcoming article focusing on breaking down the poster, and gleaning what information we can from it, so look forward to that coming soon!

Also leaked out of that FTP server came a very interesting graphic that from the looks of it is destined for the official BLT website. Take a look at this:

LAB-CON?! What the? So the BLT is looking to announce its upcoming season a some sort of conference next spring?! Again, this graphic is all we have to go on at this point, but hot-damn. The imagination reels. What could be so important that the BLT needed a press conference to announce it? I guess well just have to wait and see, but I PROMISE I will do tons more digging to find out exactly what this is all about.

Lastly, we have a video that cam out of BLT graphic designer Steven J Fox’s personal You Tube account. His account has in the past brought us the unedited version of the Machine Stops trailer, and today we see something even more interesting. We knew the BLT was going to be taking a crack at the Kenny Finkle play Indoor/Outdoor sometime this season, but does this…..downright bizarre video hint at the direction they plan on taking? Only time will tell I suppose.

The Ghost of the Swan

I took a momentary hiatus from blogging as my priorities shifted a bit over the last month or so. Tonight’s priority, however – watching the Eagles on the couch with Lexi. Less than two minutes into the game tonight, DeSean Jackson ran 67yds for a touchdown. At the risk of sounding cliche, it made me think maybe it’s time for me to get back in “the game.” I luckily had an easy return with a blog post already drafted about a perfect September day enjoying my utmost priorities! GO EAGLES!

It was about time for Dre to meet the parents, so we planned a sunny Sunday afternoon to watch the Eagles game in Philly. We met at the Piazza at Schmidt’s, knowing Dad was interested in seeing the new hip spot in the city. Food and drink is an important part of family time so we snagged an outdoor table  at Swift Half with a perfect view of the Piazza’s jumbotron tv . After a round of beers and conversation, my sister Kerry joined us just in time to place our lunch order. Dre matched Kerry’s request of a B.E.L.T, stacked accordingly with an over-medium fried egg. I went with their Traditional Burger, served medium-rare with Applewood Smoked Bacon & Colston Bassett Stilton. Their fresh, shoestring cut Idaho fries paired with the sandwiches may now be in my top ranking in the city, just under Misconduct’s.

Dad doesn’t front when it comes to his love of Scrapple, retelling stories of making homemade batches at Penn State. Swift Half managed to serve it in a most appetizing way for a non-fan like me – battered, fried triangles paired with a Maple Ketchup & Potato Hash. Mary Ann, the biggest Eagles’ fan I know, went with an epitomous game day snack of Potato Skins with Applewood Bacon crumbles, Melted Cheddar, & an Herb-Mayo dipping sauce. We all shared the Fudge Board for dessert highlighting Bacon Fudge, Vanilla Fudge, & Pistachio Fudge.

Despite an embarrassing loss by the Eagles, it ended up being a fantastic Sunday afternoon relaxing, laughing, & eating with the most important people in my life.  We even enjoyed seconds with Swift Half’s tender and tasty Buffalo Shrimp, which were eaten too fast for me to snap a pic! And no lie, now less than 2 minutes to halftime and there goes DeSean Jackson with another touchdown. All these great memories of food, family, & football – I think I’m officially back in the game.

Eventually they will figure out that the posts made last night were basically just IP harvesting dressed up to look like trolling.  And with the new batch of IPs the milfs choked up, I was able to verify a few things.  As in, someone looked at some of the getoff_youtube posts I made last night from the address “carlyinvain.livejournal.com/friends” (and I have no idea who that might have been lol).  The interesting part of that is someone with the identical IP, ISP, OS, and browser of that mysterious user also lurked my whole personal journal back on September 1st (and read every page), and was also a frequent visitor to my meatpuppet blog when it was still open.  Really?  I mean… why?  If I was such a non-topic in milfs, if they weren’t watching what I did, what I wrote, what I said, didn’t care about me at all… why lurk those journals?  And, I might add, read every page?  Still that big a fangirl, Miss Carly?

But curiously enough, they seem to hate it when I do to them exactly what they do to me, do to Starla… it’s just not as much fun when the shoe’s on the other foot, is it?

ETA: I can be a good sport, though.  Carly, if you really want into the meatpuppet blog that badly, just let me know. Among the small number of regular users that have access, I do also have a “spare” WordPress account of my own creation, for people that just want to browse it casually.  Quite a few new posts in there… new pics, videos, things no one on the Internet has seen or could probably even imagine… one video, when it was posted to the hosting site, had a warning message from the site admins added to its description that said “don’t try this alone”.  Just think of all the fapping you would get out of that…

The Challenge

A BLT is a sandwich distinguished for her elegance and defined by her simplicity.

How each chef interprets bacon, lettuce, and tomato, is entirely up to their imagination, integrity and respect for the competition.

Each competitor must acquire the necessary ingredients within seventy-two hours of the competition, of which will take place at 8pm (eastern time) on Thursday, October 22^nd 2009, and prepare a BLT sandwich as defined by the Meriam-Webster dictionary.  Each sandwich will be judged by a guest panel of individuals on the criteria of craftsmanship, creativity, taste, presentation and a general culinary mastery of the particular challenge subject.

BLTerminology

BLT-n: a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich
Bacon-n: the salted smoked meat from the sides or back of a pig

Lettuce- n: a garden composite plant with crisp leaves used esp. for salads

Tomato-n: a usu. large, rounded, and red or yellow pulpy edible berry of a widely grown tropical herb related to the potato

Sandwich-n (after John Montagu, 4^th Earl of Sandwich.  1792 Eng. Diplomat) 1: Two or more slices of bread with a layer  (as of meat or cheese) spread between them.  2: something resembling a sandwich

History

After a perilous google quest I managed to secure the history of the BLT from none other than the omnipotent Wikipedia.  The sagely online reference placed the roots of the sandwich somewhere in or around the Victorian era as an offshoot of the tea sandwich.  It was later surmised that the BLT reached her prominence in the United States following the Second World War as a result of the advent of supermarkets and year round availability of out of season produce (chiefly the tomato). Currently, the bacon, lettuce and tomato triumvirate plays second fiddle to only it’s cousin the ham sandwich in terms of mass consumption in the land of the free and the brave.

FAQ’s

No one mentioned mayonnaise?  Does my BLT need this high caloric condiment?

Certainly no, as the BLT simply refers to just those three ingredients, however, historically the BLT in most parts of the eastern United States is served with a healthy schmear of mayo.  BLTs have been known to wear other condiments in addition to mayonnaise such as hot chipotles and fashionable aiolis, but it should be understood that these all exist within the perimeters of sauces of which cheese is not a member.  Simply put, smatter the sauce to your hearts delight, but leave the cheese for the cows and French people.

I wanted to serve my BLT on a hoagie roll, but my brother in-law Sven claims that a BLT must always be served between two slices of a split topped white or whole-wheat loaf?  Is this true or he just full of shit as always?

The sandwich component is that which lends to the most flexibility due largely impart to Meriam and Webster who define a sandwich as “something resembling a sandwich.”  In that case you may stuff your pig parts, fruits and greens between two couch cushions insofar as they bear a slight resemblance to bread.

If I add an avocado to my BLT, thus effectively yielding a BLAT, do I risk failing the challenge on account of this change in acronym?

A BLT may feature some guest ingredients, and is the case more often than not at most mildly interesting bistro/grill/coffee and sandwich joints, but this does not alter it’s status as a BLT as the main ingredients remain essentially unchained; bacon, lettuce and tomato.  With that said a turkey club is not a BLT even if it possesses the necessary ingredients, they may be present but they are not the main ingredients.
