I get that question asked of memany times. And, dvd, no wonder, without being clearly labeled,they look almost exactly the same. Here’s an easy way to tell whether you have a CD or DVD. Note that Isay “duplicated” because a “replicated” disc is almost always clearly labeled on the face label as to whether it is a CD or DVD. (See, dvd, my blog link at the bottom of this article regarding the differences between disc “duplication” and disc “replication.”)

OK, turn the disc over in your hand so that the data side is facing up at you. If the surface has a faint brownish “tint”, then you have a duplicated CD.

Another, dvd, trait is that when moved in the light you see a lot of green in the iridescent light refraction. If the disc surface has a, dvd, bluish tint, you have a duplicated DVD. Again, when moved, dvd, in the light you, dvd, should also see a lot of blue or purple in the light refraction.

Now, if you happen to have a duplicated Blu-ray disc, it will have the same traits as a DVD, but it will seem just a bit more heavy, or dense, in your hand, dvd, . OK, as I mentioned above, a replicated disc will almost always have a label on it that includes information as to whether the disc is a, dvd, CD, DVD or Blu-ray. But let’s pretend, dvd, we didn’t know, just for kicks.

Replicated discs have a polished, dvd, mirrored look to the data surface,and it will in fact be difficult to discern between a replicated CD and DVD. I asked my good buddy and disc replication expert Tim Schoonenberg at Great Lakes Media Technology, dvd, www.glmt.com for his his input.

Tim replied, “It’s hard to tell them apart, but a replicated DVD has 2 thinner layers glued together and a replicated CD has just a single layer, dvd, . A trained eye can spot it.”

It is easier to detect a replicated Blu-ray, dvd, disc though. Just as with a duplicated Blu-ray disc, it too will seem a bit more dense when held, but also, the mirrored bottom surface will give off hardly any iridescence at all when moved, dvd, in the light. That’s because the tracks and data are so tightly packed on to a Blu-ray disc. Remember, a DVD holds about 4.7 gb. A Blu-ray disc starts with storage of 25 gb. I hope this allhelps. Sidney Young è un giornalista di “Post Modern Review”, rivista alternativa che si prende gioco delle star ossessionate dalla propria immagine. A sorpresa, gli viene offerto un posto come redattore nella rivista newyorkese “Sharps”. Nonostante i colleghi lo deridano considerandolo il classico nerd inglese troppo cresciuto, il decano della rivista, Clayton Harding, vede in lui qualche possibilità: così, in un’escalation di gaffes e disavventure, Sidney riesce a conquistare le simpatie di tutto lo star system, compresa Sophie Maes, giovane attrice in sfolgorante ascesa di cui è invaghito.
Ma Sidney scoprirà che, in fondo, non è tutto oro quello che luccica…

Blu-Ray Filme

Nach VHS Videokassetten kam die DVD und nun gibt es die Blu-Ray Disc. Eine Blu-Ray Disc hat deutlich mehr Speicherplatz als eine DVD, wodruch eine höhere Qualität an Filmen darauf gespeichert werden kann. Eine Blu-Ray Disc enthält Filme in HD Qualität, wodruch die Filme detailgetreuter dargestellt werden.

Auf eine Blu-Ray Disc können 25 GB (Single Layer) bzw. 50 GB (Dual Layer). Entwickelt wurde sie von der Blu-ray Disc Association im Jahr 2002 und hat sich gegen die HD DVD durchgesetzt.

Als erste Spielekonsole hat die PlayStation 3 auf die Blue-Ray gesetzt, um auch Spiele in einer besseren Qualität darstellen zu können. Die Blu-Ray setzt sich gegen die herkömmliche DVD nach und nach durch. Dies liegt zudem daran, dass Blu-Ray Disc Player immer günstiger werden und die Filme mittlerweile auch bezahltbar sind.

The HD DVD standard is being, dvd, developed by Toshiba, Sanyo and NEC, under the endorsement of the DVD Forum.
Both HD DVD and Blu-ray standards use the same wavelength blue-lasers that permit data storage on the disc at a higher density. This enhances the disc capacity and allows the recording of high definition video, dvd, on DVD support.
Wining the support of the big Hollywood movie studios is most important in the DVD format battle. Up to this moment, the four studios that gave their endorsement to HD DVD technology represent 45% of the DVD pre-recorded movie market.
The launch of DVD players in the HD DVD format is being expected for the last quarter of 2005.

The time has come for Toshiba and Nec, the main backers of HD-DVD format to announce they’re ready for write-once HD-DVD-R disc mass production.
Their discs can store 15 GB of data, and should be available for the consumers in the, dvd, first half of the next year, by the same time that HD-DVD recorders and PC drives will be also on the market.
As we all know, HD-DVD fights in a tight competition with Blu-ray for the “format of, dvd, the future” title, that also means a multibillion dollar market as a price for the winner.
Similar blue laser technology stays at the core of both formats, as the blue laser has a shorter wavelength than the red lasers used in current DVD equipment, allowing discs to store data at higher densities needed for high-definition TV and movies.
The advantage that HD-DVD-R disc has over its main competitor, the Blu-ray disc is it has the same disc structure as the classic DVD and thus can be manufactured, dvd, by using the same production lines. This, for the DVD manufacturers, means they can start HD-DVD-R mass production at full speed, right away, with not much additional cost. A replacement stamper is needed of course and the old dye must be replaced with blue-light sensitive, resin dye. The new dye was developed in a joint project of Hayashibara Biochemical Laboratories, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media/Verbatim and Toshiba Corporation.
But at the same time, Blu-ray competitor has its own advantages, like superior storing capacity. Toshiba claims it works at this aspect also, but moving from single-layer discs that are written at 1x speed, to dual-layer 30GB discs could take several years, its spokespersons said. Toshiba promised to introduce, dvd, 20GB HD-DVD-RW discs by this time next year.
So, dvd, far, the Blu-ray Disc Association and the HD DVD Promotion Group have refused to compromise to a unified hybrid format for the future DVD.

monstersinc_boxartWhen I reviewed Up I spoke about the fact that I’m never really all that excited to see a Pixar movie, yet when I do see them I always love them.  As that was the case with Up, it was also the case with MonstersInc4Monsters, Inc.

While Monsters, Inc. isn’t my favorite Pixar movie, I do think it might be the one I find the funniest.  The voice acting of John Goodman and Billy Crystal really takes the cake and leaves me rolling on the floor it’s so funny.  They come across as a modern-day Laurel and Hardy.  Someone should have put these two in a movie a long time ago.

Of course being a Pixar/Disney release the Blu-Ray version of Monsters, Inc. is awesome.  The set has 4-discs.  The first two include the movie and all the great extras that always go into a Pixar release, while the third and fourth discs are the regular DVD copy of the movie and the digital copy respectively.

As expected the Blu-Ray transfer of the movie looks and sounds wonderful.  The extras included really are great.  I’m not normally one who thinks much about the extras that come on a DVD, because normally they are so disappointing.  This is not the case with Monsters, Inc. Pixar and Disney always seem to go above and beyond with the extras they pack into their Blu-Ray releases.  The two best features in my mind were the two short animated features, For The Birds, and Mike’s New Car.  Both were very funny, and almost worth paying for themselves. There is some great behind the scenes stuff as well that really lets the viewer see what goes into the making of a Pixar film.  I even enjoyed the whole behind the scenes feature on the creation of the Monsters, Inc. ride at Tokyo Disneyland.

I’m always happy anytime a Blu-Ray comes with a regular DVD or a digital copy of the movie as well.  I think it’s a very nice touch, and all Blu-Ray movies should do it.

The new 4-disc Bu-Ray collection of Monsters, Inc. is a must own for any fan of the movie of Pixar fan.

Last year, YouTube kicked things up a notch by allowing HD video to be uploaded. The catch? 720p was the highest resolution it was going up to. Videos that weren’t in HD to begin with were upscaled to 720p. Remember when the YouTube video box was a square? Then it became a rectangle? That was last year. 720p is considered to be the starting point of HD. But true/full HD is 1080 progressive lines being thrown in your face at once.

What is 1080p? In short it’s any video that complies with the resolutions of 1920 x 1080. That means 1,080 vertical lines being lit up at once. What you will get in your video are ultra crisp details. I’m talking incredibly sharp video. True story: I was at Virgin Megastore a few years back and they had a 46″ Sony Bravia HDTV hooked up to a Blu-Ray playing broadcasting Pirates of the Caribbean 2 in 1080p. I could actually see the little pores on Johnny Depp’s face. That’s how clear 1080p content is. I was sold on Blu-Ray being amazing. I just don’t have the money to get the entire rig.

With more and more HDTVs being sold, YouTube has to continue to provide content that accomodates them. People want their 1080p videos.  Cheap video cameras with 1080p recording are already replacing 720p ones.

All of this is meaningless unless you have the necessary hardware to take advantage of 1080p. I’m talking 1080p monitor or HDTV. Watching 1080p video on your 10” netbook won’t look significantly different than watching it in 720p, because the resolution on the machine won’t pack the pixel density that is necessary to see all the details that 1080p video is supposed to reveal. Really, the best way to take advantage of 1080p content is with big screen. I’d say 32” and up.

1080p videos will be very nice, but with it also comes bigger video files, which equates to longer uploading times. While, I don’t see 1080p fever becoming the mainstream for at least a year or two to come, YouTube is planning ahead. Get ready for longer buffer and loading times, because it’s going to happen!
