After my not so successful farrier visit, we are back to basics with Sapphie and her little hooves. While the fore was trimmed by Russ, the hinds were still looking a little motely. So, it was time to incorporate the rasp into Sapphire’s routine. And with the proper prep Sapphie did great. Julie was able to rasp all four hooves, with the rope over Sapphire’s back, I might add! Now I just have to incorporate the prep into my daily routine for farrier day which is coming up mid November. This may need more than one person – three horses in different places for the farrier requires more than one person! But, I’ll be practicing and hopefully she will be an old pro by our next farrier visit. And me too.

You just gotta love those mustang hooves. She has been wearing them down and aside from just a touch too much length and a few dings she has been doing really well. No drastic farrier work needed. Just practice and feeling comfortable with all the rasping vibration on her hoof.

And then, unfortunately says Sapphie, it was a little more practice with the ropes again. But she did really well.

Sapphie: The ropes. Why? OK, I’ll give it a try. She did great!

On February 4th, 2012 Blue Horse Rescue welcomed it’s first arrival. A young mustang named Sapphire arrived and we have all fallen for her. She came to us very curious. She took every opportunity to check us out but we were unable to touch her in return. Every initiated touch spurred her to the other end of the pasture. She enjoyed and felt safe with my resident mare, LuLu, and she enjoyed running with the inspiration behind BHR, Patriot, but humans were just too scary.

Sapphire has now been with us about four months and is making great progress. She’s as cute as can be, of course, and we are just now getting a glimpse of the beautiful mare she is growing into. At only 18 months, and still very small, she still has a ways to go.

Enjoy!
