I love Las Vegas (despite the cigarette smoke). I even love the heat in the dead of summer in Las Vegas. The first time I went there, I literally spent an entire week just exploring all the hotels on The Strip, admiring the different themes. That’s pretty much the only reason I go there is for the sights, since I don’t go to clubs, I avoid gambling at all costs, and I rarely drink.

The shows in Las Vegas are certainly also an attraction. I’ve only seen a few: Siegfriend and Roy, which was horrid (it was literally like five magic tricks hidden among a bunch of glittery costumes and dancing show girls — the introduction of the new baby tiger was the highlight of the show for me because the thing was so darn adorable!); The Phantom of the Opera at The Venetian was awesome (we were sitting directly under the chandelier, so when it came down we could feel it whoosh over our heads); but my favorite Vegas show is hands-down Blue Man Group.

Blue Man Group is a fantastic all-around experience. It’s not just a show — it really is an experience. First there’s the great music, created by a combination of a band (guitars, drums, etc.) and the groups’ signature PVC instruments. Then there’s a light-show element — in the show I saw, it starts out with the three Blue Men behind a screen, beating drums while the lights move around behind them, causing their shadows to grow and change shape; then, throughout the show, there are other lighting elements that add color and motion. The show is also very comical, particularly the part when they’re eating pastries and it comes oozing back out the front of their shirts. The most unexpected thing for me was that the show is also educational — there were two segments that involved the use of three screens, each displaying something different (one was scientific data on how the rods and cones in your eyes work, the second was random gibberish, and the third was song lyrics I believe). At the end of the show was the “streamer rave”: the Blue Men climbed over the audience to the back of the theater and started pulling down these seemingly-endless rolls of streamers, and the audience had to continually pull the streamers forward, so you’re literally covered in streams of paper (not good if you’re claustrophobic ).

It’s an overall incredible display, mixing music and art and comedy to create one big artistic masterpiece. If you ever get a chance, I highly recommend it.

Arrested Development – Season 3: Poorly received comedy series that’s all about the fami

Arrested Development – Season 3: Poorly received comedy series that’s all about the family, and family values. Sounds like the ultimate cliché but this has to be one of the funniest, wittiest and smartest TV show’s I’ve seen. It’s absolutely bursting with comedy, one-liners, slapstick & adult jokes, and gags that run through an episode, season, or even the entire show: mixed between in your face, subtle or even just hinted at. The downside of this is that it’s a little too clever/fast for some, and a lot of the ‘contemporary’ quips aren’t as relevant as they were several years ago. There’s no dumb laugh-track, so you can pick up everything. The cast has too much talent – both young and old – to list: David Cross, Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Tony Hale… not to mention the stunning Portia De Rossi. As a show, it’s also smart in that it’s very aware of itself and similar shows, episode 9 in particular is screaming with self-reference and irony. The characters, who drive the plot, are all great, consistent and well-acted; in particular the promiscuous Tobias, whose every line is innuendo-tastic. Gob is also a treat to watch. It looks great, is well-written (with an amazing attention to detail*), very neat, and the show does well to handle constant incest references – which would put many people off. As great as it is this season starts to wear a little thin by the end – so it’s probably for the best that they’ve stopped it there. Like the show says “Tell your friends” as all three season are 100% worth watching.

Score: 8.5/10

*so much of which would be lost between aired episodes a week apart, which is probably the main reason it wasn’t a successful broadcast show. Definitely one for DVD sessions.

Although ThanksUSA celebrates our Veterans and their families every day of the year, we are grateful that our nation reserves a special day to honor heroes, Veteran’s Day. Last week, we had the opportunity to be a part of a spectacular expression of admiration towards our beloved troops while raising money for the ThanksUSA Scholarship Program.

This special Tribute to the Troops weekend began with a “yellow ribbon” charter flight for Wounded Warriors and their spouses, courtesy of American Airlines. Honored guests were treated to a three night stay at The Venetian Hotel, where they enjoyed a special Blue Man Group performance on November 12th. Ticket sales from this special performance were generously donated to the ThanksUSA Scholarship Program!

For the remainder of the weekend, Veterans attended educational seminars and were treated to a show by Mr. Las Vegas himself, Wayne Newton, at the Tropicana Hotel. They toured the Las Vegas strip by helicopter, visited the Hoover Dam, were guests of the Terry Fater Show, and traveled to Red Rock Canyon to see a jump by retired First Class Sergeant Dana Bowman. Dana was a Special Forces Soldier and member of the U.S. Army’s elite parachute team when a parachuting accident took both his legs.

Our heartfelt gratitude to all who made the Tribute to the Troops weekend possible:

Stars are tricky matters that often fascinate my wondering mind. Some burst upon the scene, instant

Stars are tricky matters that often fascinate my wondering mind. Some burst upon the scene, instantly filling the sky’s attention, and just as quickly fade into obscurity or their own black hole. Some are already dead when you finally see them. Some continuously move around us only to be witnessed every other century or so it seems if you’re lucky to be born at the right time. But some, some stars are so special that you may find yourself as the only person in a packed room to even notice it, to fully appreciate its existence within that split second of a moment, and cast your wish out loud that it stay awhile longer before it shoots off stage again … or for good. Yes, Venus Hum is such a special kind of star; a not-so-country kind of Nashville star.

Now, before over-shooting the whole point and myself, I should clarify some things to straighten your vision. Venus Hum is no sort of quasar in specific but more so a musical group that was formed in Nashville, TN, consisting of three distinct parts harmony: two folds eclectic electric sounds created, mixed, and arranged by Kip Kubin and Tony Miracle superbly blended with the magic bullet of one Annette Strean’s angelic vocals. Individually, each brings forth separate talents and flavor of life. Together, they form a finished product that is never truly finished and yet is unique to every other product on the music market. With the latest release of their fourth album/CD, Mechanics and Mathematics, Venus Hum continues to separate itself from the overplayed radio pop-pack and trail blaze a path that a loyal and growing fan base is more than eager to dance to and happily follow.

In some ways, Venus Hum’s adventure has yet to begin or reach its potential. On the other hand, similar to tales of other supernovas that have been before, Venus Hum has had a storybook origin that nobody, including its members, quite ever saw coming. If you ask anyone in the band how their story ensued so far, you might not get the same answer or exact science of how these three began. In a lot of ways, the manner in which their first show and the name was realized explains everything they are about. It just happened.

How else can I explain the causes and effects, the methods behind the glorious madness … the mechanics and mathematics of it all if you will? Bluntly writing in order of occurrences; two guys met while studying different courses at Belmont University. Kip was focusing on a career path in Radio at the time while Tony was pursuing knowledge in the business side of music. They met through mutual friends, an interest and love of the almighty synthesizer, and began making music more as a hobby than anything else.

Then, out of nowhere from the big beautiful sky or Whitefish if you’re keeping score, a songbird appeared on the scene. Annette, who had graduated high school in Montana and full-heartedly invested in her song writing/singing skills as her higher education at the time, took a road trip on the whim. Packed with her guitar, a book of personal lyrics, a carload of confidence in her abilities and aspirations, Annette pulled into Nashville with nothing in mind other than meeting with a friend who had been helping her with advice from afar with her questions about the music biz. The clouds began to move in the winds.

Annette met with her friend and signed up as a solo act for a show a few months ahead of that time at a rock festival to have something to look and work towards. Within the weeks following, in less than 6 degrees of separation, Annette was introduced to both Kip and Tony and asked if they would mind finish writing songs together and accompanying her for the show. During the process of writing a small string of songs, they brainstormed for something to call themselves. In true pen and pad fashion, they took to writing down the first ideas they could think of when Tony suddenly mentioned that his venous hum was really bothering him (a medical condition where blood flows to the brain and back to the heart so quickly that it causes a humming noise). The three looked at each other; they put the notepad down and with a small change of the spelling, a name stuck.

Equipped with a solid set and a name to take notice, the group took to the stage with no expectation or clear thoughts other than that they didn’t want to get laughed offstage. The music was loud but the praise from the crowd was even louder. The first show had gone over way better than they every imagined; so much so that things moved quickly in a positive direction from there. The group began playing steady around the area with a steadfast fan base on the climb and mastered their own self-titled, self-released EP and CD. It didn’t take long for the record labels to hear the buzz.

Within two years of their first unanticipated show, Venus Hum was the talk of the Nashville music scene with numerous nods as Critics Pick and Best of Nashville awards. The group decided to sign with two record labels: MCA for the USA and BMG for international play. Somewhere in those same fast times, the band found new happy faces all over the world while touring with the Blue Man Group and releasing their very own version of the single “I Feel Love.” They took to the road and overseas as if it was old hat; a non-cookie cutter kind of avant garde homegrown hat that made sounds and stories visually come alive while engaging unsuspecting listeners along their journey.

With a string of songs from two follow-up studio albums (Big Beautiful Sky and The Colors In The Wheel) appearing on popular primetime television shows, as well as in a few movies, and a sound that had no boundary or lack of appeal, the band was creatively able to do whatever they could think up with the musical side of things. The business side, however, was sometimes harder to swallow from below. Typical to stories you may have heard about music executives in the past, the big wigs thought it would be in everyone’s best interests to tweak pieces of the group’s image to quickly grab the attention of a wider audience instead of letting the promising flower bloom on its own.

When the contracts ran out, the group again unexpectedly revealed newfound passions and skills within their own hiatus of sorts. Tony honed his craft for producing and design work, Kip threw himself into directing and film production, and Annette nearly lost her voice due to troubles with her vocal chords only to have surgery, recover, and feel better than ever about her overall outlook physically and mentally relating to the health of her favorite and most prized thing in life … music. They agree that they are each a huge fan of each others’ work, that they have never had a better personal and working relationship together, and they are exactly where they need to be to grow in all directions from this point forward.

Coming full circle from their original self-released album, the fourth installment, the self-released Mechanics and Mathematics, is an exceptional compilation of the total creativity, ingenuity, and possibility of each of this three part harmony that makes up Venus Hum. Every last bit of detail, from writing the music, designing the artwork, shooting the videos and distribution of the album via their website and at live shows is 100% Tony, Kip, and Annette. Carrying out their mission to marry pop songs with strange electronic sounds, Venus Hum is better than their described unconventional, three-dimensional and completely five-sensual music … their sound is other worldly beautiful. With this not-so-country kind of Nashville star, the Big Beautiful Sky is far from their limit.

(ZURICH) Former general Slobodan Blubovich was detained earlier today by Swiss police under charges of crimes against bluemanity during his brief but violent period in control of the small, musical nation of Bluemania.

Speficially, the charges stem from the brutal repression of the centre-left Blue Man Group movement, which he is alleged to have ordered after seizing power in the Blue November military coup of 1988. Mr. Blubovich has remained free in the two decades since, and has denied any involvement.

An impassioned tableau depicting the events leading up to the genocide

Representatives of the Group have toured the world since, attempting to raise awareness of the horrific violence of the period, in which an estimated 30,000 Bluemen were clubbed, hammered, and otherwise beaten to death in what many historians have labeled a genocide. Though their efforts have been praised, the Group’s representatives have faced allegations that the conceptual nature of their speeches have confused, rather than promoted awareness of, the massacre.

This arrest marks the beginning of the first attempt to bring the perpetrators to justice. Mr. Blubovich, now a dye manufacturer, had been attending a conference on synthetic dyes in Switzerland before his arrest.

Griendzic arrives at the station

His lawyer (and former Secretary of State) Radovan Griendzic quickly issued a statement once again categorically denying any involvement on behalf of his client. He went on to decry any potential trial as unjust, as no Bluemanian could be considered impartial on the matter. Critics claim Griendzic himself is implicated in the massacre as a leading member of the coup, responsible for coordinating secret negotiations with neighbouring Greengaria, his homeland. However, witnesses report Griendzic’s health to be incredibly poor, claiming his skin to have been sickly green while issuing the statement, raising questions about his ability to defend Mr. Blubovich for the duration of a trial.

Dalton Drumblue, one of the original touring members of the Blue Man Group, issued a statement regarding Mr. Blubovich’s arrest, but no member of the press has been able to decipher its meaning as of yet.

Happy Monday to all. This weekend was a great weekend in Chicago. I saw Blue Man Group at the Briar Street Theatre on Saturday evening with my mom. We had to wear ponchos so we didn’t get regurgitated twinkie all over us. It was a great show, very entertaining. Last week was busy with leaks from the Flawless Hustle mixtape, Money Isn’t Real. If you haven’t already downloaded it, make sure you get it. Tomorrow, I will begin promoting m 9th Wonder produced mixtape, Love Potion Number 9th: The Hangover. I will be dropping my first two singles, Blow It Out and Let It Got featuring Adullessence, Large Marge and Stik Figa. Love Potion: The Hangover is sponsored by FlawlessHustle.com, AKIN and RedefinedHype.com. I look forward to hearing what everyone thinks. Last night, I decided to start the week in a different direction with my musical selection. Today’s album is from the ska band, The Specials. My brother has been listening to them for a long time and recommened recently that I check out their Singles Collection. I put it in this morning and it immediately started bringing back memories from my 1st childhood. I remember my brother listening to most of these songs. The Singles Collection is definitely a great way to start the week, especially on a gloomy Monday morning. Here are a few songs from The Specials including Gunz of Navarone which Karindal Offishall sampled for his joint, See The Fire from Kill Bloodclot Bill. Enjoy.

And when the blue men came out to the stage, my brother whispered “Hey, Asian blue man!” He was right! An Asian Blue Man! Perhaps its neither here nor there, but I thought it was pretty cool.

RE: Dear: SA FM

You did not accept my invitation for a rebuttal so I will jack this up a notch. (Caps on) NOTHING HAS CHANGED (Caps off). Actually wait, scrap that. You are now rotating a whole new bunch of artists and unfortunately for us all they’re still s**t. What has to happen for me to make a difference? Do I have to get elected to a board of mediocrity? If this is correct how would one go about getting their name on the ballot? My name lacks pizzaz, so tell me, is the name ‘Fifi Box’ taken? If elected I would set the following in motion:
1. All Britney songs to open with “It’s Britney bitch”. This gives the listener ample time, or approximately 3 seconds, to get to their stereo to turn it off.

2. Re-assess the use of the term “classic” on air. This may come as a surprise but the Pussy Cat Dolls’ ‘Don’t Cha’ does not fall into that category. Neither does anything that Shania Twain has released. Outdated? Yes. Classic? Not a chance.

3. Abolition of the “gotchya” calls. I, along with anyone who has a functioning pair of ears, find them completely awkward. “Hi it’s the bloke that’s building your house. Turns out it’s gonna cost youse an extra $12k to do that back extension”. What sort of prank is that? May I suggest “Oh hai turns out that baby that you got growing inside of you has a blue-ish tinge to their skin. Downside: Looks like a member of Blue Man group. Upside: Human Smurf.” I would outro that segment with Eiffel 65’s “I’m Blue” for guaranteed hilarity.

4. Seek the involvement of the FBI to track down a couple of rampant identity thieves. Green Day. What goes on there? ‘Dookie’ was produced by a great band who, like myself, had some great ideas to set the world on fire. The horrid arse that “Green Day” are producing now is surely not correct. Something in the milk ain’t clean.

5. More T-Pain. Always more T-Pain. His voice makes me giggle.

I have many more golden nuggets of wisdom, however I don’t want to overwork you lads. Am I correct in saying that the implementation of the above ideas will take a few days? So I’ll keep an ear out for the changes and then we’ll have a meeting with a few brews to toast our success. Do you have Microsoft Outlook? Make sure you accept my meeting request.
