So what did everyone think of Shopping Weekend 2009?  What did everyone get?  Here’s my take.

I participated (although lightly) in both Black Friday and Cyber Monday this year and have a few opinions on the weekend.  Black Friday wasn’t really anything special this year.  Yes, it was interesting for Amazon to drop down in price and compete with the Big Box Stores (Like Walmart) and this added a new story line to keep an eye on.  Target, Best Buy and Walmart (The Big 3 in my opinion) all offered very similar deals; none of which were very impressive.  It seemed that the deals were positioned as great deals, but nevertheless disappointed shoppers.  For the most part, the everyday prices were as impressive as the sales, and this may have confused shoppers.

None of the major stores had that sale item that made you say, “WOW, I have to go there.”  In years past, these were a regular occurrence.  Obviously the poor economy and lower inventory levels made sales harder to come by for retailers.  If they had offered those couple, “Oh my god!” prices, retailers would have done a lot better this past weekend.

The same was true for cyber monday.  There were lots of deals (free shipping was popular) but none of them really stood out to me.  Another thing to note is that this year online sales started as early as Thursday for some retailers.  This could impact Cyber Monday’s sales levels.  Although the deals were not that great today (Monday) or Friday; if consumers wanted to find a deal, because of shear volume (amount of sales) they could find something they liked.

It will be interesting to see the traffic and sales report numbers as they come out.  I predict that because of the whole weekend being full of online sales, and the lackluster deals that sales may not be as high as retailers would like.  We should know more in the days to come.

So how did I make out this weekend?  Well, a LCD HDTV, Blue Ray Movies, and Blue Ray Planet Earth made this weekend a good one for me.  Coincidentally, the TV I got wasn’t even a Black Friday special.  It was a Best Buy Holiday price.

You’ve heard the story, dvd, before. Technology pushes onward and a new media replaces an aging stalwart. In the 1980s, it was Betamax vs. VHS tape. Today, it is Blu-ray vs. HD DVD.
The traditional DVD is on its way out. There’s little disagreement about that. The DVD player’s, dvd, red laser is losing its appeal and the new blue laser of upstart competitors is gaining more attention. Alternatives boast considerably more storage space and flexibility—necessities as the HDTV era establishes itself and consumers’ tastes for products loaded with extras grows. The only question is who comes next. There are two primary contenders, Blu-ray and HD DVD, but no clear winner.
HD DVD disks will hold 15 GB of data on a single layer, 30 GB with dual layering. Tests substantiate a 45 GB capacity with a theoretical limit of 60 GB. That 15/30/45/60 line looks good compared to today’s DVD. However, when one compares it to Blu-ray capabilities at 25/50/100/200, it seems unthinkable that HD DVD could grab a market share advantage.
HD DVD, however, has, dvd, a few advantages. First, it’s cheaper to make. Compared to Blu-ray, factory retooling is a breeze. Second, it’s probably sturdier. Bother options have thinner, dvd, protective layers than the DVD, but one may be able to pierce the Blu-ray’s protective shield too easily. Third, HD DVD is closer to being ready for mass production and distribution.
Major players have lined up behind both options. Hopes for cooperative abandonment of the competing options for a standardized format have dissipated. One of the two options will probably emerge as the “next big thing.” That outcome could be determined by, dvd, storage capabilities, market penetration, consumer preference or durability. It might also be decided by who can first develop an optimal security system to appease studios and content producers concerned about piracy.
VHS trumped the ostensibly superior Betamax back in the days when videotape was cutting-edge. Soon we’ll learn whether consumers are ready to embrace the massive storage advantage of Blu-ray or the “it was here first” appeal of HD DVD.

Setelah di gala premierkan pada tanggal 15 Agustus , di Los Angeles dan New York, dan sampai sekarang sedang diputar di bioskop-bioskop di Amerika dan Eropa, film dokumenter musik (rock) dengan pendekatan yang unik  IT MIGHT GET LOUD yang dibintangi oleh tiga orang gitaris yang berkarakter dari tiga generasi yang berbeda, Jimmy Page (64),  The Edge (50)  dan Jack White (34)  akhirnya dirilis dalam format DVD dan Blue Ray pada tanggal 22 Desember yang akan datang. Ini tentu berita baik bagi kita di Indonesia, yang nampaknya tak mungkin mengharapkan film ini akan diputar di bioskop-bioskop.

Film dokumenter musik (rock) ini bisa dikatakan unik, karena dibuat berdasarkan pendekatan yang berbeda dibandingkan dengan film-film dokumenter musik (rock) yang pernah dibuat sebelumnya. Film ini tidak berbicara tentang pemujaan terhadap idola atau tentang obat bius yang biasanya dijadikan isu mengenai cerita yang berkaitan dengan musik rock, tapi film ini ingin bicara sesuatu yang lebih dalam, bersifat filosofis, mengapa ketiga orang gitaris ini memilih gitar sebagai media ekspresi mereka. Ide awal pembuatan film ini muncul dari Thomas Tull, bos dari Leggendary Pictures yang juga seorang kolektor gitar, dan senang ngejam blues dengan teman-temannya pada saat segangnya. Ialah yang sangat terobsesi mengetahui mengapa ada orang yang begitu mencintai gitar.  Ia kemudian mengontak temannya  Davis Gugeinheim,  sutradara yang baru meraih penghargaan Oscar untuk film “An  Inconvenient Truth” film dokumenter tentang Al Gore mantan wakil Presiden Amerika yang  membahas tentang perubahan iklim global.  “Saya juga melakukan wawancara informal untuk menggali banyak hal dari Al Gore. Dan itulah yang kemudian menjadi bahan penggarapan film  An Inconvinience Truth.  Hal yang sama saya lakukan dalam penggarapan film ini.”

Maka dari penggalian ini lahirlah film IT MIGHT GET LOUD, yang selama kurang lebih selama 90 menit,  kita akan di ajak untuk menelusuri tempat-tempat bersejarah dari Jimmy Page,  The Edge dan Jack White. Siapa yang awalnya mempengaruhi mereka, bagaimana mereka menemukan sound gitar mereka, dlsbnya dalam alur cerita yang terpisah, sebelum akhirnya ketiganya di bawa ke Hollywood ( di tiga hotel yang terpisah) untuk kemudian dipertemukan dalam panggung yang tak begitu yang besardi studio Warner Bross.  Mereka saling bertukar pikiran dan ngejam bareng. Semua ini tanpa arahan. Dibiarkan apa adanya, kamera on itu saja. “Saya juga tidak tahu apa yang akan terjadi” ungkap Davis. “Ya karena cara pendekatan dalam membuat film inilah, yang membuat saya mau terlibat dalam penggarapan film ini.” kata Jimmy Page.

Dan bagi anda yang tidak sabar menunggu dirilisnya DVD atau Blue Ray film ini, diinformasikan bahwa mulai tanggal 8 Desember IT MIGHT GET LOUD akan dirilis dalam format I-TUNE secara ekslusif.

I went to see the latest Star Trek movie in the theatre, having seen every one of the Star Trek movies, and just about all the middle generation Star Trek TV show’s….(The last one ended as a cop-out…just a dream?)

This movie was awesome!..so I’ll be going out to get my disc this weekend…..And Spock gets the girl! ……Oh !

In the epic battle between Microsoft and Sony some gamers have been caught in the balance there are many different ways to argue about this. Playstation has Blue-ray, Xbox has better games it goes on and on, I think there are good things about both, I have both and will remain neutral in this argument. But I would like to hear you guys battle this out in the comments

For the beginners who want to know the this, Blu-ray is an optical disc format which is set to rival HD-DVDin the race to be the de-facto standard storage medium for HDTV. The HD-DVD vs Blu-ray battle resembles that between Betamax and VHS and DVD+RW and DVD-RW.

Currently, the major Hollywood film studios are split evenly in their support for Blu-ray and HD-DVD, but most of the electronics industry is currently in the blue corner.

The key difference between these new players and recorders and current optical disc technology is that Blu-ray, as its name suggests, uses a blue-violet laser to read and write data rather than a red one. Blue light has a shorter wavelength than red light, and according to the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), which is made up of, amongst others, Sony, Philips, Panasonic, and Pioneer, this means that the laser spot can be focused with greater precision.

Blu-ray discs have a maximum capacity of 25GB and dual-layer discs can hold up to 50GB – enough for 4 hours of HDTV. Like HD-DVD, Blue laser discs don’t require a caddy and the players and recorders will be able to play current DVD discs. Codecs supported by Blu-ray include the H.264 MPEG-4 codec which will form part of  Apple’s QuickTime 7, and the Windows Media 9 based VC-1.

The BDA says that although blue laser discs and players are already shipping in Japan, they won’t ship in the US until the end of 2005 at the very earliest. It is likely that players will be very expensive initially, compared to DVD players. In Japan, they cost the equivalent of $2000. However, as with all new technology, prices will quickly fall – particularly as Blu-ray will be competing with HD-DVD for that space under your TV.

Do have any idea how much porn has changed the world?  What kind of control and effect it has had on the modern world, consumer products and a million other things?

What really decided who won between Betamax and VHS?  Why did Blue Ray win that contest?  Why do all DVD players have a multi-angle viewing button?  Why can we send and receive pictures on our phones? Why is suddenly so important to have 3G phones?  Camcorders… digital cameras, payper view, satellite and cable tv, the internet.. the list goes on and on.

Porn.. porn (and sex) is one of the leading driving forces behind a lot of technological advances.  Now this won’t come as much of a surprise to some people, but I think a lot of people will be at least a little surprised.

Did you know that the reason VHS became the primary technology was NOT actually because Sony wouldn’t let anyone else use the technology.  It was due to the porn industry choosing VHS as the platform on which to produce their films because it was cheaper for them to produce.. and suddenly.. loe all kinds of people had a VHS player (why buy the expensive one that won’t play your sexy films on it??)

Don’t believe me?  Do you own a DVD player?  Go check the remote.  Does it have ‘change viewing angle button’ on it?  They all do, I have never seen one that doesn’t (anywhere in the world).  But what ever for?  Have you ever watched a movie that you could change the angle in?  Just recently they have released some sports videos with that feature (very recently).  So if no one uses it, and it’s not a feature that is on any DVD’s how did it get included in every single player?  I’ll give you a hint.. sexy naked movies have multiple angles (and until this year they were the only thing that did).

Blue ray… HDVD.. who’s coming out on top..  you didn’t actually think that it mattered who disney picked did you?  Or whether people like the PS3 more or less than the XBOX360.. oh gosh you did.  It all came down to the porn industry.  Like it or not, sex is in demand.  It’s the only consumer product that there is always, ALWAYS a market for.  Everyone in the know always said, which ever platform the porn industry decided on would come out on top (boom shackalacka.. blue ray it is).

There are so many things, apparently the big pushes in phone technologies, turning them into hand held computers is being driven by the money that producers realize is in sex.  You might enjoy all the great features that allow you to check your email, send your mom a picture, and watch a youtube video but they didn’t make it for you.  They made it for the horney hunnies with the moneys.

Did you really think that people wanting to film their kids soccer game, or people wanting to take picture with out having to go to printing shop was really driven by our consumerism?  Sorry to ruin your fantasies kiddos.

So how far does it all reach?  Who the hell knows, most of us don’t even know about the things I just mentioned.  Hell I didn’t know about most of them until somewhat recently (the last 5 years or so anyway).

Well I just though of another one.  (Now keep in mind this is just my theory but I think it makes a HELL of a lot of sense).  Our current social desire for hairlessness.  Think about it, humans have been around for eons and this hairless thing has only become a real fashion in the past 20-30 years.  I was thikning about it, wondering if the fashion would ever go back to having hairy arm pits, and un trimmed un waxed bits and places. (aka your crotch).  Who knows…

But I do know that it was the norm, not all that long ago.  So why did it change?  What drove that change?  My money is on porn.  I suspect that they started ‘cleaning up’ the fuzzy bits in porn to give folks a better look at what they were doing.  I mean you can hardly get a good view of what someone is doing to a girl with full bush, or what’s happening on the guy behind his own personal tundra.  If they are both sporting little crotch lions, you’re not going to see NUTHIN’.

I bet that some director was filming and said oh for Christ’s sake.. someone shave this check so I can get some good angles.  BOOM  a trend is born.  Next thing you know, the bikini wax/shave gets higher and higher.  Voila, a few years/generations later, not only are almost all people sporting virtually no pubic hair, it’s considered EXTREMELY bad form to not tidy, trim and clean the area up.  For both men and women.

More and more women shave it all, or almost all,  a lot of men are getting into it too.  Waxing is more popular than ever, not only does it get everything out of the way, it lets you avoid stubble and keeps you clean and smooth much longer.  The porn star wax (as I like to call it) is become more popular and common.

I’m telling you… if porn got interested in the environment Tracey would probably do a little jig in pure excitement at all the changes and innovation it would bring.

Anyway that was what crossed my mind earlier today (damn I stayed up late scribbling this all out.. oops)

Xbox360 to go BlueRay?

The speculated news started after Gizmodo had an exclusive interview with Microsofts CEO’s Steve Ballmer. For now, they are just releasing a few clips or snippets of the interview. One of the clips that was aired was the controversial “BLUE-RAY Add-on accessory for the Xbox360.” Gamers are now in a huge fuss as to if this holds any truth and if it did then why did microsoft only though of it now. In the interview with Gizmodo, Steve Ballmer informs them that users will “be able to get Blue-Ray drives as accessories”. In the end, a lot of players & owners of XBOX360 are angered as to “WHY DID THIS ADD-ON NEVER CAME EARLIER”.

Dragon Age Updates for the PS3

News have also been circulating regarding the PS3 release of Dragon Age will get a delayed release as to it’s Xbox360 and PC counterparts. Retail shops have listed the said game for a November 17th release date but Bioware later clarified that such release date is just a hoax. The PC, Xbox360 & PS3 version of their game will his the shelves all together coming this November 3rd of this year.

Bayonetta Madness

So the sultry, seductive and fast paced action game of Sega “Bayonetta” which also have won the hearts fo Xbox360 gamers in terms of graphics is getting a major propaganda in terms of advertisement all over the net and even in the local streets/areas in japan. The said game is slated for release come this October 26th in Japan and it was just recently reported that two large posters in Shinjuku with fliers that can be pulled off. No idea as to what is underneath those since it can only be accessed via the special Bayonetta cell phone site. The poster is 6ft long and has the phrase like “”If you didn’t peel it off, it would have been a peaceful day” and “This women, she’s the scent of taboo”. The posters will be on display from October 26 to November 1.

El artículo analiza la situación que vive el cine en la actualidad, concretamente la industria de Hollywood. La crisis que está viviendo esta industria no está directamente relacionada con la crisis económica global en la que estamos inmersos (aunque obviamente ésta ha influido también) sino más bien por el surgir y crecimiento de un nuevo medio que está haciéndose sitio entre los anteriores: Internet.

Según el artículo, aproximadamente la mitad de los beneficios de esta industria viene de la venta de DVDs y Blue-Ray. A lo largo de los últimos años se ha ido desarrollando en Internet un nuevo producto conocido como las redes P2P, que comienzan a hacer un efecto sustitutivo, sobre los anteriores. Paralelamente al desarrollo Internet y del ancho de banda, se desarrollan estas redes, ofreciendo actualmente incluso los DVDs completos (con toda la calidad y los contenidos del producto original) con lo cual las ventajas que ofrecía uno ya están disponibles en el segundo. Debido a que ofrecen el mismo producto a un precio muchísimo inferior (se podría decir que prácticamente gratis) resultan muchísimo más rentables para el consumidor, quien gradualmente está comenzando a adquirir el segundo.

Por otra parte la aparición de este nuevo producto ha hecho que aumente la elasticidad en el mercado de las películas en DVD y Blue-Ray. El consumidor ahora se deja influenciar mucho más por el precio, mucha más gente dejará de estar dispuesta a pagar más que cierta cantidad de dinero, puesto que lo puede adquirir por Internet, sin embargo si se encuentra con un precio muy reducido es mucho más probable que se deje llevar y compre una copia original.

Esta situación podría considerarse mala para la industria cinematográfica, puesto que está cortando mucho sus ingresos, y no tiene tanta facilidad para cubrir sus gastos. Por su parte, el consumidor podría considerarla como buena puesto que obtiene el producto que desea a un precio mucho más reducido, sin embargo es fácil  ver que con el tiempo el consumidor mismo se verá perjudicado por una reducción en cuanto a la cantidad y calidad de los productos ofertados: muchas películas que se podrían haber hecho, nunca llegarán a rodarse. Por otra parte se podría ver esta situación como parte del proceso evolutivo natural del cine. Este cambio, inevitable como ha sido, le da nuevas posibilidades aún por explorar al mundo cinematográfico. Quizás no sea ni bueno ni malo, sino un cambio más en nuestro entendimiento de lo que es el cine.

Los más perjudicados son la industria cinematográfica (tal y como es entendida a día de hoy), Hollywood, y al actual star-system. Beneficia a corto plazo al consumidor de películas que prefiere descargárselas por internet, pero perjudica a largo plazo a éste y a todos los demás consumidores de cine. Habrá que esperar a ver cómo se desarrollan los acontecimientos para saber si finalmente el Cine en general sale de esta situación beneficiada o perjudicada.

Con respecto a posibles soluciones para esta situación, habría que analizar a dónde van a parar los gastos en las películas, según he comprobado en muchas ocasiones un alto porcentaje es destinado a la contratación de unos pocos actores estrella, en ocasiones cobrando casi lo mismo que los beneficios en taquilla, he elaborado la siguiente tabla que refleja el desmesurado gasto en actores o actrices de algunas películas (obviamente seleccionadas debido a su gasto descompensado)

Qizás en algunas ocasiones se tendría que acortar el presupuesto para estrellas contratando actores menos reconocidos, pero con las mismas características y calidad, aunque habría que estudiarlo detenidamente pues las estrellas también generan mucha expectación entre las masas.

A largo plazo, el cine tendrá que adaptarse a este nuevo contexto en el que se encuentra. El mundo está en continuo cambio, y algunas cosas como en este caso las descargas por Internet, no son ni controlables ni parables a estas alturas. El cine deberá cambiar algunos de sus aspectos y aprender a convivir con Internet, al igual que ya se ha adaptado a otras nuevas situaciones, y al igual que otros medios hicieron con la aparición de otros.
