Just had one of the most gorgeous weekends I think I’ve had in London!

As you probably all know, Thursday it snowed…everywhere was white…gorgeous! This snow remained around over the weekend (and even this morning!), giving a gorgeous white wintry background to everything. Add to this some gorgeous blue skies and shining sun, and I really couldn’t have asked for much more! Though it was cold, we just couldn’t stay inside! So we wrapped up and went out.

Though we couldn’t make a snowman as the snow wasn’t the right form to do one (it didn’t stick together), I still managed to do a snowangel…wippee! However, what impressed me the most was this white vastness covering anything, which under the blue skies and shining in the sun felt so uplifting! To me this all feels like it’s part of a fairytale, or something out of a film, considering that we never get snow in Malta! After that it was on to making the most gorgeous carrot soup ever! I have never made carrot soup and never had much of an inclination for soups, but michael has been suggesting soups at intervals, and after this one I will DEFINITELY not complain about them…Nomnom!

On Sunday then it was off for a walk to the Farmer’s market in Queen’s park. We had already been there once, but with the weather treating us well (except for temperatures ) we decided to walk down there and grab some breakfast/lunch at the market. Walking in a white landscape in good weather is great and gives you life I am starting to believe! We got to the market with a healthy appetite and bought a Lincolnshire hot dog for me, and a lamb hettie for michael for the main meal. But then it was on for dessert! I got an almond croissant and Michael got a ‘real English muffin’. DELICIOUS!

Back home it was then time to start getting things sorted for our trip home (keeping fingers crossed for all to be well with our flight!). We put the gifts we have in my luggage (ahhh! it is practically full just with gifts…AAAA!), and started washing clothes. As the last load was going, we then snuggled up to watch a movie: Where Sally met Harry, which we borrowed from our flatmate’s big DVD collection.

Well, it’s Friday again. Man, what a week it has been.

I’m sure all of you want to relax just as much as I do. And, since that’s the case, I figured I’d stick it out and get another set of photos put up from my trip out to Arizona.

Surprisingly, all of these photos came from a 10 minute walk around my Grandparents’ house. OK, I was actually walking around a lot longer than that, but it wouldn’t have taken you more than 10 minutes to get to any of the spots in the photos.

I still can’t believe how gorgeous it is out there. Blue skies as far as the eye can see. Mountains sitting resolutely, securing the sky to where it belongs.

Harsh landscapes that will suck you dry in a matter of hours, yet full of plants and animals thriving everywhere you look.

Gallery: DESERT BEAUTY

I was struck by the beauty of the desert on my drive back to the Delta Office. 

The sky was an amazing blue.

The jet streams adding a hint of adventure in the skies.

 The large blue flat top mountain is Grand Mesa.

And a semi and I are the only ones on the road.

Now THAT was cool. 

(This is a well-traveled two-lane highway all the coal miners call “ The Death Highway”.)

Everyone loves a good volte-face in music, particularly when it’s a rather wacky folk-pop outfit deciding to ditch the jarring ditties in favour of widescreen heartbreak-infused indie-country-soul. So imagine the world’s delight when Laura Marling dumped chief Noah head Charlie Fink, forcing him to lick his wounds and make an excellent album detailing his “I’m fine, really. Really, I am. OK, I’m not. But I will be” stance. That’s what The First Days Of Spring turned out to be, and lead single ‘Blue Skies’ was its ray of hope.

But we’re concerned with YACHT’s remix here. The DFA crew took Noah And The Whale’s big music, stripped it back and turned it Balearic – yet still retained the beaten-and-bruised hopefulness of the source material. Junior does jazz hands to it, and a lengthy impersonation of one squeaky vocal effect, sweetly undercutting any grand moodiness. I play her the original too, which she describes as “mad”. It’s what this blog’s all about: an unfathomable perspective.

By which I mean not literally in this overspill parking lot, but here I am in the Northern hemisphere, mid December, and it’s blue skies, sunny and warm (low 20s), and that’s the Pacific Ocean right there.  Oh yeah.

Pretty fuckin’ nice, eh!

(Of course, that was yesterday. Today it’s back to the usual: raining again, woken up by one of the cats licking my head and stepping in my eye, oppressed by the sudden unwonted arrival of a flurry of work, etc etc.  It’s all good though.)

We’ve been having quite the stretch of very brisk weather in the last couple weeks out in the Northwest. It makes me very thankful that our landlady just replaced our antique furnace with a new efficient one!

M & I have watched a skating rink grow right outside our driveway in the street:
It gets bigger day by day, because we live at the base of a big hill, and the drainage accumulates right here, through a pipe under the sidewalk!
We’ll be able to pull out our ice skates pretty soon (that is, if we owned any).

But with clear blue skies like these…

Okay, so Libby is known in our household as the person who broke Lorelai’s green crayon, haha. From there, a friendship has formed =] I got the chance (the same day as the Johnson’s photos) to photograph her and her family as well. We all had a good time, and you’ll be sure to see more pictures of the fam soon!

Last week I had the pleasure of photography the Johnson family. Casey cracks me up on a regular basis, and this day was no exception! It was a b-e-a-utiful day, Ethan was having a blast, and with some great ideas thrown around it was a fabulous day! Thanks again!

Two good features about these photos, one is capturing photos of planes flying overhead and the other is having blue skies. (Photos taken in Prescott, Arizona).

As I floated on my back in the refreshing and sparkling chlorinated pool, I gazed up at the gum trees set against the blue skies which were marked by nothing but little puffs of picture-perfect white clouds. Oh, and a little blue parakeet flying around, keeping a beady eye on me, his new-found friend. Earlier I had seen him in the backyard of Michelle’s place where I’m temporarily living, nibbling on flowers in the bush. I was surprised at how close I could get to him to take photos and I realised he was someone’s pet. Long story short, I gave him a piece of bread which he practically snatched out of my hand, some water, and let him sit on my hand which is when our newborn friendship almost ended because he bit my hand. Twice. Hard. But he wouldn’t get off, no matter how loudly I yelled at him. And when he chirped each time after  biting me, it wasn’t just any old chirp but more like a scream or a cough (and I thought ferrets had a scream to freeze hell over twice). I immediately thought of bird flu and gingerly put him down on the ground, backed away inside and washed my ever-so-slightly punctured skin under hot water. That should do it, right? Right?

Anyway, it wasn’t bird flu I was thinking about as I looked up dreamily at the sky, floating on cool water on a warm spring Brisbane day. I was thinking about how alive I felt. Sure, water is refreshing but it’s also a good place for contemplation and clearing your head of clutter. It was then that I felt I could see the future.

The future is this: I don’t know yet.

But whatever it is, I’m going to take it with both hands and live it, no matter how bad or how good it may be.

It’s been a hard, dark year for me — mentally, emotionally, physically — with some horrid, horrid deep black moods that scared the hell out of me. As I have chronicled elsewhere, it was a long time coming and when it did, it came with a fury and force.

When my cat went away recently, obviously to die, I broke down and cried and cried for hours, while thinking that I couldn’t possibly cry anymore this year. It was odd how I made myself a cup of tea and drank it, all the while sobbing. Odd how I folded the towels and put them away, all the while sobbing. I was still functioning while crying and hating this year I’ve had — one of the worst years ever, full of ups and downs, happiness and heartbreak, highs and lows, and feeling so anxious all the goddamn time. They were real self-pitying tears of sadness but with a difference — I wasn’t immobilised this time. When I had my breakdown in August, I couldn’t get out of bed for three days and a bit, and I would have stayed in bed a lot longer if I could have gotten away with it.

I don’t know what my point is but it just seems significant to me somehow. I guess it means to me that while I can still cry and be sad and feel sorry for myself, this time it’s simple buckets of tears that we humans are allowed to express from time to time. It wasn’t at all like that awful black hole I finally fell into four months ago.

So, I’m thinking about this while in the pool and reflecting on the year that was 2009. I find it hard that so much has happened in one year. I suppose there are 365 days in a year for many things to occur. I just never predicted this, though, never thought I’d end up moving interstate to Brisbane, being an unemployed bum and floating in the deliciously cold pool quite happily with nary a worry in the world by the end of the year! I never predicted just how apt the name of this blog, A Fresh Start, would be.

I finished my job last Friday, was on the road to Brisbane the next day and arrived on Sunday. Since then, I’ve felt a sense of anti-climax and a bit of what I thought was anxiety and I worried that the change was too much for me. But I realised that I was worrying about being worried! I got somewhat annoyed and told myself that it’s OK to sometimes worry about things, but it doesn’t mean that my anxiety is getting out of hand. Sometimes it’s OK to be sad, like when Mr Bean went away, but that doesn’t mean I’m getting severely depressed again. Sometimes it’s OK to feel a little overwhelmed by big changes or events, but that doesn’t mean I’m not coping.

While looking at the clouds passing by to cover the sun’s nude bits up, I realised that I never thought I’d be meeting lots of great new people via Twitter after disparaging it for so long. It’s a particularly great tool for meeting new people in a new city, I must say.

I never thought I’d get over my heartbreak.

I never thought I’d feel something other than a low mood.

I never thought I’d feel useful again.

I never thought I’d feel I have some worth again.

I never thought I’d realise with sudden clarity in a swimming pool that I must be a friend first and foremost instead of trying to force a relationship on people just because I crave intimacy after such a long absence from it and an inherent sense of loneliness. Intimacy will come; I’ve had it, lost it, had it, lost it, it will come again — that’s Life. Fate. And in the same way I managed to carefully but gamely stroke the shy blue bird in the backyard so as not to scare him off, I will take a chance with trusting, believing and accepting again, carefully and gamely without rushing and scaring others off.

The sky was a brilliant azure, the gum trees and palm fronds swayed in the breeze, the blue bird perched on the fence watching, the water cleansed and refreshed me. I reassessed the year I’ve had, the years I’ve had, and the big change in facing my anxiety head-on and taking risks such as moving to Brisbane. If this doesn’t work out, that’s OK, I heard myself say. I know I have faith in myself and will embrace Life, come what may.

Suddenly I realised that I felt truly happy for the first time in years, by myself, with the blue skies smiling at me. Skies were gray but they’re not gray anymore.

Okay, so first let me say these are some of my favorite people. They’d give you the shirt off their back (or, in our case, off their children’s haha) and the similarities between our families never ceases to amaze me =]

So Nick’s family came to visit for A-School graduation/his birthday, and it just seemed right to take family pictures. The day was beautiful, the park was breath taking, and the kids cooperated (well, most of the time). We had a great time, and I’m pleased to FINALLY have all the pictures completed for them!

Freaking great, a monster fly just entered my room through the small gap between my door, just fantastic haha anyone that knows me well knows I hate big flies and bees ahah

So, like, I haven’t written for a few days because on Monday I tried to blackra1n my iPod touch which went mega fail, and then after waiting a day for our months’ wireless broadband speed to reset again, I had to download the iPod touch/iPhone 3.1.2 OS update again to restore my iPod, and after that my iPod was all, you guessed it, – reset! And empty

So I had to resync it, re-add all my songs, apps, photos, and when I added the WordPress app which is now called WordPress 2, it wouldn’t log me in properly, coming up with the annoying message; Communication Error: Bad Username or Password. I’m sure I am not the only one that got stuck with that problem, I’m sure many are probly still stuck on it. I however always end up googling things I don’t know and so I ended up finding a site that informed me: the WordPress app tells you to type your URL in the format: example.wordpress.com, however you need to write the format as www.example.wordpress.com and then it works fine

So here I am at long last

I’ve also been rather sick since Wednesday, think it’s the common cold, had the ghastliest throat the other day (Wednesday)! not fun. I’m seeing better days at the moment though, hoping I’ll be fine tomorrow finally.
