Topaz

Topaz is a silicate mineral of aluminium and fluorine with the chemical formula Al2SiO4(F,OH)2. Topaz crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and its crystals are mostly prismatic terminated by pyramidal and other faces.

Color and varieties

Pure topaz is colorless and transparent but is usually tinted by impurities; typical topaz is wine, yellow, pale gray or reddish-orange, blue brown. It can also be made white, pale green, blue, gold, pink (rare), reddish-yellow or opaque to transparent/translucent.Orange topaz, also known as precious topaz, is the traditional November birthstone, the symbol of friendship, and the state gemstone for the US State of Utah.Imperial topaz is yellow, pink (rare, if natural) or pink-orange. Brazilian Imperial Topaz can often have a bright yellow to deep golden brown hue, sometimes even violet. Many brown or pale topazes are treated to make them bright yellow, gold, pink or violet colored. Some imperial topaz stones can fade on exposure to sunlight for an extended period of time.Blue topaz is the Texas state gemstone. Naturally occurring Blue Topaz is quite rare. This is the first time I ordered jewelry online, and I was prepared to be disappointed, considering you are getting 5 pairs of earings for about $40. Although the earrings looked beautiful in the pictures, I was thinking, well, they may look horrible in real (as many things you buy from online are). But I was totally surprised by how nice and beautiful these earrings are when I received them today. They look exactly like in the picture, and the gems are not small at all ( I was also expecting them to be tiny tiny gems). I especially like the peridot and the amethyst ones. Very nice color and shape. The garnet ones are not as red as I would have liked, but again, considering the price, they are worthy enough.

It is a fluorine aluminium silicate and comes in yellow, yellow-brown, honey-yellow, flax, brown, green, blue, light blue, red and pink … and sometimes it has no colour at all. The topaz.

The topaz has been known for at least 2000 years and is one of the gemstones which form the foundations of the twelve gates to the Holy City of the New Jerusalem. These so-called apocalyptic stones are intended to serve in protection against enemies and as a symbol of beauty and splendour. It cannot be proved conclusively whether the name of the topaz comes from the Sanskrit or the Greek, though the Greek name ‘topazos’ means ‘green gemstone’. The Romans dedicated the topaz to Jupiter.

The colour in which the topaz is most commonly found is yellow, and that is the colour in which it occurs in one of the major German gemstone rocks, the Schneckenstein (a topaz-bearing rock said to resemble a snail) in Saxony. In the 18th century, it was mined there during a period of over 60 years. However, most of the crystals were hardly a centimetre in diameter. You had to go to Siberia or Brazil to find crystals as large as your fist. Having said that, anyone who is interested can convince himself of the beauty of cut specimens in the topaz set in Dresden’s Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault). The enormous and magnificent topaz from the Portuguese crown, the Braganza, was for a long time thought to be a diamond. It weighs 1680 ct..

In mysticism, the topaz is attributed with a cooling, styptic and appetising effect. It is said to dispel sadness, anger and nocturnal fears, to warn its wearer of poisons and protect him or her from sudden death. It is reputed to make men handsome and intelligent and sterile women fertile and happy. However, it is probably better not to rely too much on its magical powers, since it was also claimed that you could immerse your hand in boiling water after a topaz had been thrown into it and retract it again unharmed! It is the stone of the month November.

In the Empire style, the topaz was still widespread, but then the more reasonably priced citrine took over from it and even usurped its name – gold topaz. Since then, the topaz has been a rather exotic figure in the jewellery trade, and has been given the additional predicate ‘pure’ to make it clear that the topaz, not the quartz topaz, is meant. And it is still waiting for its well deserved comeback to this day.

There is some uncertainty over where the name Topaz originated from.  Some say it comes from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘fire’ while others link it to the Red Sea Island of Topazios (Zabargad or St. John’s Island) where Peridot has been found.

Basically Topaz means ’a yellow gem’ and you can be certain that plenty of Citrine and Smoky Quartz  has been incorrectly sold as Golden Topaz and Smoky Topaz!  The terms Imperial and Precious Topaz are now often used to distinguish between real Topaz and the Quartz look a likes.

Topaz comes in a variety of different colours but the vast majority is heat treated to obtain the colour of choice.  The most popular colour is blue and the lightest blue colour known as Sky Blue is quite readily available.  The deeper coloured Swiss Blue variety is a little rarer with London Blue being the rarest.  The fine golden yellow coloured variety which is known as Imperial Topaz is relatively scarce and the most valuable is pink Topaz.

The method of heat treatment used to create Blue Topaz is called irradiation.  This involves exposing the gemstone to pre determined levels of controlled radiation to change the colour to various shades of blue.  Strict guidelines are followed to ensure the gemstones are safe following this treatment.  They must then be safely stored away for differing lengths of time to allow them to sufficiently ‘cool’ before they can be handled.  The lengthy amount of time that London Blue Topaz has to stand is one of the factors that makes it so rare and more expensive than the lighter coloured Sky and Swiss Blue varieties.    

Topaz is a very hard gemstone but like the Diamond, it can be split with a single blow.

The largest Topaz crystal named El Dorado was found in Brazil in 1984.  It weighs 6.2 kg and belongs to the British Royal Collection.  The most famous Topaz is the giant Braganza diamond in the Portuguese crown which was as its name suggests, first thought to be a diamond.  There is also a beautiful Topaz set in the Green Vault in Dresden, one of the world’s most important gemstone collections.

Topaz has been used for centuries in jewellery and is the birthstone for the month of November along with Citrine.  Blue Topaz is considered one of the birthstones for the month of December.  It is also the anniversary gemstone for the 4th year of marriage.

The Minas Gerais area of Brazil is the most important supplier of Topaz but it can also be found in many other locations worldwide.

Topaz is graded 8 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness

You may have read a bit about blue topaz and that it must be tested for residual radiation (and pass) before being sold in the US. You may have noticed that some jewelers have elected to remove it from their inventory.  Should you be concerned?  Not really. But there are a few facts that may be of interest.

First, I think it’s really cool that a nuclear reactor or accelerator can produce these beautiful colors of topaz.  Generally, the darker blue topaz – known as London Blue – will result in more radiation than the lighter tones – known as Sky Blue.  However, the treater allows the radiation to “decay” a few months before importing it into the market for sale. Then, the testing facility needs to issue a clearance for the stones to be safely sold.  This is the law now. This is not a warning that blue topaz is causing any health problems – it’s more of a wake-up call to suppliers that they must comply with the law. It can be as blue as the sky, a slightly greenish blue, or a highly saturated “electric” blue. Not only is Blue Topaz a beautiful gemstone and comes in a variety of colors, it also has many interesting legends attached to it.

Like most topazes, which are quartz crystals, Blue Topaz starts out as a nearly clear or a lightly tinted shade of crystal. The colorless crystal is then irradiated to bring out a blue color, and finally heat treated to make the color stable. The color depends on which type of radiation is used.

If the quartz crystals are hit with neutrons in a nuclear accerator, a grayish-blue or deep greenish-blue color is produced that is frequently referred to as London Blue Topaz. Exposing the topaz crystals to electrons in a linear accelerator produces the most common color of Blue Topaz – Sky Blue Topaz. To create the highly saturated colors known as Swiss Blue or Electric Blue, topazes are bathed with a combination of both types of radiation. After almost a year of “rest,” the radiation levels are cool enough so that they can be worn by consumers.

Since most quartz crystals have low value, there’s really no incentive to create synthetic stones. Instead, various vapor or diffusion coatings (mainly titanium) are used to create the “mystic” Blue Topaz, a version that sparkles with red, sea green, and teal colors. Since this effect is produced by a thin coating of titanium, Mystic Blue Topaz is extremely fragile and must be handeled with the greatest of care.

Although Blue Topaz has a very unusual maufacturing technique, it is an astonishing gem since it’s highly refractive and shines beautifully when polished. With a score of 8 on Moh’s Scale of gemstone hardness, Blue Topaz finds its way into many attractive pieces of jewelry.

Blue Topaz has many mystical and New Age beliefs surrounding it as does all forms of topaz: it’s said to promoted glandular health, regulates heart rythm, and reduces inflammations such as arthritis. The color of Blue Topaz is commonly considered to help clarity of the mind, aid in meditation and forgiveness. The calming effect of its blue color is believed to help its wearers let go of their anger and fosters forgiveness and reconciliation that leads a calmer and more fulfilling life.

So, you might be familiar with the concept of each wedding anniversary having a fabric, metal and precious stone assigned to it. One of my best friend’s husband asked me to design some jewelry, working the items for their 7 year anniversary into the design. For year 7 the fabric is wool, the metal is copper and the precious stone is blue topaz (which also happens to be my friend’s birth stone).

I have always wanted to learn how to make felted wool beads but didn’t have the time this round to learn. So for the first set of jewelry I located some felted wool beads at a local bead shop, Bead It and made a chunky necklace and dangling earrings:

And after browsing around etsy for some nice copper pieces, I settled on some antique filigree copper leaves from softcover and headed to another local bead store, Legendary Beads. I looked for blue topaz in faceted rounds but they didn’t have any in an affordable price range so I decided swarovski beads were an acceptible trade off. I did something a little different than the traditional clasp. I put leaves on both ends of the necklace and set the it up so that you thread the chain through a jump ring (it slips over your head, so no need for a clasp) and you can adjust the length of the leaves so that they fall either really far apart, or closer together. I think they turned out nicely:
