Aretha Franklin is another favourite of Soulussion

Aretha Louise Franklin (born March 25, 1942) is an American singer, songwriter and pianist commonly referred to as “The Queen of Soul”. Although renowned for her soul recordings, Franklin is also adept at jazz, rock, blues, pop, R&B and Gospel music. In 2008, the American music magazine Rolling Stone ranked Franklin #1 on its list of The Greatest Singers of All Time.

Franklin is one of the most honored artists by the Grammy Awards, with 18 Grammys to date, which include the Living Legend Grammy and the Lifetime Achievement Grammy. She has scored a total of 20 #1 singles on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart, one of which also became her first #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100: “Respect” (1967). “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)” (1987), a duet with George Michael, became her second #1 on the latter chart. Since 1961, Franklin has scored a total of 45 “Top 40″ hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In 1987, Franklin became the first female artist to be entered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Franklin was the only featured singer at the 2009 Presidential inauguration ceremony for Barack Obama.

James Joseph Brown (May 3, 1933 – December 25, 2006), originally James Joseph Brown, Jr., also known as “The Godfather of Soul”, was an American entertainer. He is recognized as one of the most influential figures in 20th century popular music and was renowned for his vocals and feverish dancing. He was also called “the hardest working man in show business”.

As a prolific singer, songwriter, dancer and bandleader, Brown was a pivotal force in the music industry. He left his mark on numerous artists. Brown’s music also left its mark on the rhythms of African popular music, such as afrobeat, jùjú and mbalax, and provided a template for go-go music.

Brown began his professional music career in 1956 and rose to fame during the late 1950s and early 1960s on the strength of his thrilling live performances and string of smash hits. In spite of various personal problems and setbacks he continued to score hits in every decade through the 1980s. In addition to his acclaim in music, Brown was also a presence in American political affairs during the 1960s and 1970s.

Brown was recognized by numerous titles, including Soul Brother Number One, Sex Machine, Mr. Dynamite, The Hardest Working Man in Show Business, The King of Funk, Minister of The New New Super Heavy Funk, Mr. Please Please Please Please Her, I Feel Good, and foremost The Godfather of Soul. In the song “Sweet Soul Music” by Arthur Conley, he is described as the King of Soul.

Soulussion are influenced by many great soul artists, and one of our favourites is Wilson Pickett.

Wilson Pickett (March 18, 1941 – January 19, 2006) was an American R&B/rock and roll and soul singer and songwriter known for his raw, raspy, passionate vocal delivery.

A major figure in the development of American soul music, Pickett recorded over 50 songs which made the US R&B charts, and frequently crossed over to the pop charts as well. Among his best known hits are “In The Midnight Hour” (which he co-wrote), “Land of 1,000 Dances”, “Mustang Sally”, and “Funky Broadway”.

The impact of Pickett’s songwriting and recording led to his 1991 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Pickett was also a popular songwriter, as songs he wrote were recorded by artists like Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, the Grateful Dead, Booker T. & the MGs, Genesis, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Hootie & the Blowfish, Echo & the Bunnymen, Roxy Music, Bruce Springsteen, Los Lobos, The Jam and Ani DiFranco, among others.

Several years after his release from jail, Pickett returned to the studio and received a Grammy nomination for the 1999 album It’s Harder Now. The comeback also resulted in his being honored as Soul/Blues Male Artist of the Year by the Blues Foundation in Memphis. It’s Harder Now was voted Comeback Blues Album of the Year and Soul/Blues Album of the Year.

In 2003, he co-starred in the D.A. Pennebaker-directed documentary “Only the Strong Survive,” a selection of both the 2002 Cannes and Sundance Film Festivals. In 2003, Pickett was also a judge for the 2nd annual Independent Music Awards to support independent artists’ careers.

Pickett spent the twilight of his career playing dozens of concert dates a year until 2004, when he began suffering from health problems. While in the hospital, he returned to his spiritual roots and told his sister that he wanted to record a gospel album. But, sadly, he never recovered.

Pickett died of a heart attack January 19, 2006 in the hospital near his Ashburn, Virginia home and was buried in Louisville, Kentucky. Pickett’s long-time friend, Little Richard, spoke about him and preached briefly at the funeral. Pickett spent many years in Louisville when his mother moved there from Alabama. He is considered an honorary son of the city. His funeral procession was flanked by well wishers welcoming him home.

He was remembered on March 20, 2006, at NYC’s B.B. King Blues Club with performances by the Commitments, his long-term backing band the Midnight Movers, soul singer Bruce “Big Daddy” Wayne, and Southside Johnny Lyon in front of an audience that included many members of his family, including two brothers.

Ray Charles Robinson (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004), known by his stage name Ray Charles, was an American musician. He brought a soulful sound to country music and pop standards through his Modern Sounds recordings, as well as a rendition of “America the Beautiful” that Ed Bradley of 60 Minutes called the “definitive version of the song, an American anthem — a classic, just as the man who sang it.” He also appeared in the 1980 hit movie, The Blues Brothers.Frank Sinatra called him “the only true genius in the business”.

In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Charles number ten on their list of “The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time” and also voted him number two on their November 2008 list of “The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time”.

In 2003 Charles performed “Georgia On My Mind” and “America the Beautiful” at a televised annual electronic media journalist banquet held in Washington, D.C., at what may have been his final performance in public. Ray Charles’ final public appearance came on April 30, 2004, at the dedication of his music studio as a historic landmark in the city of Los Angeles.

O.k, so I just had a five hour energy drink, just a sip. I am going to write something now. What is there to talk about. First off I am awesome, and everyone who doesn’t realize I am awesome, is not awesome. Second off, I rule. Anyone who doesn’t think I rule, or does not realize I rule, does not rule. My friends Adam and Liz, who got married recently, went as Chunk and Sloth from the Goonies. They were totally awesome. Adam, was Sloth, and was a true rock star. Everyone and their mom, asked for his picture. After it was all said and done, Adam and Liz both agreed that being rich and famous, would not be awesome, as most people think it would be.

I think being rich and famous, would be totally awesome.

So that was Halloween.

Lisa and I are getting along great which is totally awesome. I decided I would stay home today, and write, and wait for the show tonight. (Which will be totally awesome.) Im going to see Brother Ali, with Evidence and Toki Wright. (No relation). That is going to be a totally awesome show. My friend Rob, who is by definition totally awesome, is going with me. He has to go to a wake first, which, as we know are not awesome. Wakes, not awesome. People passing away, not awesome. I called my friend TJ and he is going to a wedding tonight, which is by definition totally awesome. Not the fact that TJ can’t hang out, which is not awesome, but the fact that people pledging their lives together, and celebrating with an open bar, is by nature totally awesome.

I still haven’t found a job, which is not awesome. Quit drinking, which is awesome in some respects, but not awesome, in the fact that I don’t drink anymore. I mean beer is awesome, there are so many different varieties, and they all taste so good, which is totally awesome. Not awesome, is the hangover, and the fact that I shouldn’t be drinking on meds, which drinking on meds, is definitely not awesome. I also swore off caffeine which was an awesome idea at the time, but now that I just had a little caffeine, I feel awesome, that I am writing this. But not awesome in the fact that the reason i am writing such an awesome piece right now, because I am jacked up on caffeine.

I’ve been watching Saturday Night Live for longer than I care to admit.   It’s on my list of all time favorites.  But this week, Halloween weekend, I skipped it.  Cuz I’m bored with it. 

Where are today’s Blues Brothers?  Wayne and Garth. Toonces the driving cat.  Remember the Church Lady playin’ the drums?  Or how about Molly Shannon’s Mary Katherine?  There are too many to mention, but I have to give nods to Chris Farley’s Matt Foley, Adam Sandler’s Red-Hooded Sweatshirt song, and Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin.

The last few years have had their ups and downs, but right now it’s mostly down.  I think SNL needs an injection of funny. New blood.  Ever since Tina left, I keep falling asleep right after the monologue.  You guys totally wasted Drew Barrymore!  You didn’t even get her on skates, or have her beating up on anybody!  And right after Whip It! came out. Sigh. 

Save me from Saturday Night Snoring, Lorne Michaels! 

Here’s how.  You’ve already got a Host and a Musical Guest each week, how about adding a Guest Writer?  Like when you bring in Tina for a week & she goes back to 30 Rock.  Fresh faces to hide off screen and sit around the writer’s table drinking coffee with the SNL writers and cast.  My suggestions are below:

• Drew Curtis.  The guy who brought us Fark.com.  Drew is awesome, witty, and has great one-liners.  He’s also well-versed in stupid human news.  Go Drew!
• Ellen Degeneres.  Do I need to say more?
• John Irving.  Okay, hold on.  Let me explain.  He is intimately familiar with sneaking in a specific set of symbols into a wide array of plot lines.  Dancing bears.  Flatulence.  Boxing.  Embarrassing sexcapades.  Naughty older women. And I totally bet Seth Meyers could do a great impersonation of Owen Meany’s tiny, gravelly voice.
• Ab Fab’s Jennifer Saunders.  She’s the bomb!  She created Edina and Patsy, and that makes her a pro.
• Natalie Portman.  You know she’s awesome from when she hosted SNL.  But did you see her recently on Top Chef?  Her and all her friends going ’round the table making oral sex jokes?  That girl has some witty things to say, and a little snark as well.  And she’s hot.
• Speaking of snark, how about McSweeney’s Dave Eggers?  He’s really smart too.
• And me, Chris Witwer, creator of the Felsputzer Blog.  Cuz it would be fun!

In the meantime, please stop doing those stupid Gilly skits!  Ugh!

I am feeling MUCH better today.  I could’ve slept a few hours more than I did, but there’s this thing called work.  You have to do it to earn money.  You then take that money and buy things and pay bills, not necessarily in that order.  Therefore, the time change tonight is a welcome thing.  We all dread spring and the time change forward.  Yeah, I love the sunshine but I could really use that hour of sleep.

My Daughter and I never made it to the hockey game and we didn’t get to carve pumpkins.  She got a call from her work.  Three guys called out and there was a huge restock coming in, and would she come in to work.  She really wanted to spend time with me, so she worked out a compromise.  We had enough time to put a stirfry together and just hang out in the kitchen.  As for the hockey tickets, I gave them to My Son and his girlfriend.

I have finished CS training for L.L. Bean and will start shift work tonight.  I’ll have enough time to rush home from the warehouse, change and clean up, and off to work.  This is how it will be for the next 8-10 weeks.  Good thing it’s fun work or I would dread it.

But Billy, that little engine that could, kept at it, became an SNL favorite, and later starred in such box office powerhouses as ‘Tootsie,’ the ‘Ghostbusters’ sequels and ‘Charlie’s Angels.’ He also became a critically acclaimed actor and was nominated for an Academy Award for ‘Lost in Translation.’ Older brother Brian followed him to SNL and later to Hollywood but couldn’t get out from under his younger brother’s long, dark and awesome shadow.

Eddie Murphy almost single-handedly resuscitated a flagging SNL franchise suffering from the exodus of its original cast. But it turns out he was just getting started. With films like ‘48 Hours,’ ‘Beverly Hills Cop,’ and ‘The Nutty Professor,’ not only did he define the role of street-wise smart-ass, but he also became the second-highest grossing actor in motion picture history. Cast mate Rosato? After an undistinguished career on SNL, he was arrested and charged with criminal harassment of his wife due to deteriorating mental health. We hope he recovers.

Let’s be honest. These spouses were both relatively quiet during their time on SNL. But while Louis-Dreyfus has won two Emmy Awards starring in ‘Seinfeld,’ the defining sitcom of the 1990s, and ‘The New Adventures of Old Christine,’ Hall starred in, well, what did he star in again?

But while Belushi left us with comedic masterpieces like ‘National Lampoon’s Animal House’ and ‘The Blues Brothers,’ Farley’s filmography and effect on comedy were much smaller. Both left too soon and are still sorely missed.

While Dana Carvey was coming to the end of an incredible run on SNL (his creations include The Church Lady, Hans from ‘Hans and Franz’, and Garth from ‘Wayne’s World‘), Sandler was just starting out. Unfortunately, heart problems and a surgical mishap slowed Carvey’s career down. After leaving SNL, Sandler quickly became Mr. Hollywood Box Office starring in ‘The Waterboy,’ ‘Big Daddy,’ ‘Anger Management’ and ‘The Longest Yard.’

Fame can be a b—h. One moment, as John Lennon once said, you’re “more popular than Jesus.” The next, no one is returning your calls. The transition from obscurity to popularity to invisibility can happen faster than a New York minute. And one place where that phenomenon has happened more often than most is at ‘Saturday Night Live.’ Some people quickly become big stars and then fizzle after they leave the show. Others simmer on the proverbial comedic backburner and later laugh their way to a box office bonanza.

Here are the Top ‘SNL’ cast members who blew up. Or blew out, starting with:

uno di questi due amici che insisteva sul fatto che non era possibile che io non avessi mai visto questo film,una pietra miliare che mancava alla mia cultura,che era una lacuna cui bisogna porre rimedio subito (il fatto che dicesse tutto questo da ubriaco era fantastico) mentre l’altro già era arrivato a quella fase di sonnolenza-inerzia che gli concedeva qualche esclamazione di approvazione rada durante il film.il mio ragazzo,ovviamente, faceva “comunella” con i due nell’anticipare le scene con entusiasmo o citare a memoria le battute.
dopo aver scoperto che,a seguire, la televisione avrebbe trasmesso anche il seguito ci siamo muniti di scorte di panettone e ci siamo sistemati meglio sul divano.è stata proprio una bella serata.

Chi di noi da piccolo non giocava con il Lego?
Quei piccoli e colorati mattoncini assemblabili danesi con cui potevi fare di tutto: casette, macchinine, astronavi, fino a riprodurre statue, mosaici e macchine complesse.
La Lego-Art ha visto di tutto… dalla riproduzione dell’Allianz Arena fino a Escher.

Angus MacLane, invece, utilizza il Lego per creare dei Toys riproducendo le fattezze di personaggi famosi, attori, supereroi.
