Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night
Sailed off in a wooden shoe —
Sailed on a river of crystal light,
Into a sea of dew.
“Where are you going, and what do you wish?”
The old moon asked the three.
“We have come to fish for the herring fish
That live in this beautiful sea;
Nets of silver and gold have we!”
Said Wynken, Blynken, and Nod.

The old moon laughed and sang a song,
As they rocked in the wooden shoe,
And the wind that sped them all night long
Ruffled the waves of dew.
The little stars were the herring fish
That lived in that beautiful sea —
“Now cast your nets wherever you wish —
Never afeard are we”;
So cried the stars to the fishermen three:
Wynken, Blynken, and Nod.

All night long their nets they threw
To the stars in the twinkling foam —
Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe,
Bringing the fishermen home;
‘Twas all so pretty a sail it seemed
As if it could not be,
And some folks thought ’twas a dream they’d dreamed
Of sailing that beautiful sea —
But I shall name you the fishermen three:
Wynken, Blynken, and Nod.

Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes,
And Nod is a little head,
And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies
Is a wee one’s trundle-bed.
So shut your eyes while mother sings
Of wonderful sights that be,
And you shall see the beautiful things
As you rock in the misty sea,
Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three:
Wynken, Blynken, and Nod.

After the sugar rush that is Halloween, not to mention renewed fear for those unknown things going b

After the sugar rush that is Halloween, not to mention renewed fear for those unknown things going bump in the night, it occurs to me that there may be a few little ones out there who are fighting their bedtimes. So, with that in mind, here are a few classic bedtime reads, forever timeless for their ability to soothe and gently lull a child to a peaceful dreamland.

3. Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson. Not only does Harold get to make the world around him exactly as he likes, he gets to have a wonderful adventure. But even adventurous little boys get sleepy. So, at the end of the day, Harold uses his purple crayon to draw a comfy bed.

2. The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd. I remember my mom reading this to me at my bedtime, and I still remember the sense of coziness and safety that come with this story. Little bunnies everywhere can drift off to sleep, wrapped in the soothing blanket of a mother’s love. That pesky monster under the bed won’t stand a chance against this gem.

1. “Wynken, Blynken, and Nod” a poem by Eugene Field. This wonderful poem tells the story of three little sailors sailing into a sea of dew and visiting the moon while in a wooden shoe. Of course, Wynken, Blynken, and Nod aren’t really sailors; rather they represent a little one’s head nodding off to sleep. The cadence of the poem serves as a magical lullaby where the stars and the moon are our friends.

Of course all bedtime stories are special, but these three help not only to remind children that they are safe and loved, but they all end with a child, despite his or her best efforts to stay awake for more fun, deciding that going to sleep might not be so bad after all.

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night
   Sailed off in a wooden shoe,—
Sailed on a river of crystal light
   Into a sea of dew.
"Where are you going, and what do you wish?"
   The old moon asked the three.
"We have come to fish for the herring-fish
   That live in this beautiful sea;
   Nets of silver and gold have we,"
            Said Wynken,
            Blynken,
            And Nod.

The old moon laughed and sang a song,
   As they rocked in the wooden shoe;
And the wind that sped them all night long
   Ruffled the waves of dew;
The little stars were the herring-fish
   That lived in the beautiful sea.
"Now cast your nets wherever you wish,—
   Never afraid are we!"
   So cried the stars to the fishermen three,
            Wynken,
            Blynken,
            And Nod.

All night long their nets they threw
   To the stars in the twinkling foam,—
Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe,
   Bringing the fishermen home:
'Twas all so pretty a sail, it seemed
   As if it could not be;
And some folk thought 'twas a dream they'd dreamed
   Of sailing that beautiful sea;
   But I shall name you the fishermen three:
            Wynken,
            Blynken,
            And Nod.

Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes,
   And Nod is a little head,
And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies
   Is a wee one's trundle-bed;
So shut your eyes while Mother sings
   Of wonderful sights that be,
And you shall see the beautiful things
   As you rock in the misty sea
   Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three:—
            Wynken,
            Blynken,
            And Nod.

I really like this poem of the week idea. I am going to share with you all a Dutch poem. My hometown was settled by the Dutch so I think it’s fitting. Although I discovered this poem when I was watching the movie Dennis the Menace. Mrs. Wilson recites this poem to Dennis before bed. The poem is by Eugene Field.

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night
