The luxury trawler yacht builder Grand Banks has a fantastic heritage and is still at the cutting edge of classic boat design and building. Grand Banks announced the arrival of 2 new models to the ranges and set Fort Lauderdale boat show as the launch platform to show them off.

Reported by Grand Banks:

Grand Banks Yachts kicked off the 2009 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show with a strong lineup of models in each of its Heritage, Eastbay and Aleutian Series, plus announcements about two new yachts that will launch early next year. The company chose this event to reveal an early look at the new 46 Eastbay SX, the first model in the Down East-styled Eastbay Series to feature Zeus pod-drives from CMD. With standard twin 600-horsepower diesels, the 46SX has predicted top speeds of over 30 knots, with improved handling and fuel economy thanks to the Zeus propulsion system. The 46SX also offers a three-stateroom layout option, a noteworthy feature for a vessel of this size. “Like the 41EU before her, this boat was designed around the Zeus drive system,” said Neil McCurdy, Vice President of Sales and Service for Grand Banks. “That compact footprint opens up a lot of extra space for interior accommodations. I think owners will be delighted with every single aspect of this new Eastbay.” Grand Banks also shared more news about its new 53 Aleutian RP, a luxury raised-pilothouse model that will also launch in early 2010. The company recently marked the sale of Hull #1, before it was even out of its molds, and expects to secure more sales during the Lauderdale show. This year’s boat show features popular models in each of Grand Banks’ three yacht series: the 59 Aleutian RP, the 39 Eastbay SX, and the Zeus-powered 41 Heritage EU. The trawler-styled 41EU made its international debut at last year’s Lauderdale show; since that time it has sold into markets from Korea to Canada, America to Australia and beyond, gathering strong reviews all along the way. The 41EU is one reason that despite an economic slump affecting much of the marine industry, Grand Banks remains strongly positioned to weather the financial storm for this season and well into the future. “We’re fortunate in a number of ways, despite the current market conditions,” said GB president and CEO Rob Livingston.

“Grand Banks continues to be among the most highly regarded brands anywhere. We have an incredible team of people and a growing dealer network. Our cash reserves are strong, and the company continues to invest in improving our yachts and our processes every day.” Earlier this week, Grand Banks hosted its 2009 Dealer Meeting here in Fort Lauderdale, with new dealerships in attendance including those from Greece, Australia, and the Pacific Northwest. The event was also an opportunity to recognize the top-performing GB dealers, including overall winner Grand Banks Italia in Orbitello, Italy. Winners in North America included Boatworks Yacht Sales (East Coast) and Stan Miller Yachts (West Coast). About Grand Banks – Since 1956, Grand Banks Yachts, Ltd. has built yachts of superior quality that have become industry hallmarks and earned a loyal following around the world. Renowned for their handmade craftsmanship, distinctive good looks, and tried and true all-weather capabilities, Grand Banks yachts continue to be the choice of discerning boaters today. Learn more about the company and its Heritage, Eastbay, and Aleutian series yachts at grandbanks.com.

Thank you Newsgate, for if it weren’t for you there would have been another photographer available for an hour and a half cruise on a doorless helicopter over Broward County. We had about six or so stories to shoot for so we went from a neighborhood in Parkland, Florida to the 595 to the cruise terminal, boat show, and downtown fort lauderdale. So cool, I can’t even stress!

I remember once while working in Miami I was talking to a model who out of nowhere says, “You know, The Boat show is in town.” This struck me as strange since I don’t own a boat, wear nautical attire or give the airs of someone who would be interested in boats. Then a few days later I was walking down Ocean Drive and a double decker tour bus was driving by and the I could hear over a loudspeaker emanating from the vehicle, blah blah blah….The Miami Beach Boat Show…blah blah blah. If that wasn’t enough I started seeing banners being towed by airplanes announcing that The Boat Show was here! I never went to the boat show.

Cafe Colada

Besides shutting of the AC and opening up all of my windows in my hotel room, Miami means Cuban coffee. I usually go to this place on Collins Ave. across the street from the Shore Club. It’s a family run convenience store which specializes in stamina pills, flavored condoms and cigarettes. I order cafe colada which always comes with these little plastic cups. I think I’m supposed to share this drink with friends but I since I’m all alone I end up throwing away the little cups and sipping this massively sweet strong drink by myself.

My favorite breakfast in Miami is a colada and cuban toast. Cuban toast is basically a very light and airy french bread cut open , spread with butter and put in a paninni press. You have to eat it quick before it gets stale.

desayuno de campeones

A good place to eat in Miami is Puerto Sagua. It’s no nonsense cuban food at a reasonable price. I usually sit at the counter, order a Presidente and the breaded steak with plantains and moro rice.

The counter at Puerto Sagua

The best burger in Miami is Le Tub. It’s actually not in Miami but in Hollywood 20 minutes north. The sirloin burger is charbroiled, massive and just plain great.

Le Tubs Sirloin Burger

It’s the only place I know of where you can see tarpon swimming while eating a cheeseburger and sipping a Stella. Apparently the tarpon won’t eat anything thrown to them except fried shrimp. They turn their noses up to french fries. Come to think of it, Le Tubs’ fries aren’t so great. Go there for a burger and a beer!

The tarpons

I usually get up early to get a cuban coffee and read a little before work. The early morning in South Beach, when the sun is just coming up is usually filled with some strange quality. I can’t quite put my finger on it. People wandering the streets after a long night of frolicking just looking for a way to get home and get to sleep. There’s lots of singing and crying. I remember once, I was practicing yoga at the beach. The sun had not yet come up so it was still dark. I was sitting in a comfortable cross-legged position. And, just as the sun was coming up over the horizon, it revealed 2 guys in a comfortable position of their own. To each their own. My day was just beginning, theirs was just ending.

With doors opening at the end of this month the world’s largest boat show Fort Lauderdale is set to make its 50th show anniversary its best ever!

Released by show management at Fort Lauderdale;

Prepare to be Dazzled by the Billion-Dollar Golden Anniversary Showcase of the Grande Dames of Yachting, When it comes to superyachts, size does matter.

The dazzling billion-dollar presentation of hundreds of superyachts (80 feet and over) at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show® is a sight to behold. These superstar superyachts take center stage October 29 – November 2, 2009. To experience their glory, just stroll the docks of the show for a glimpse of what the superyacht industry has to offer. Here are some of the celebrity guest-stars you’ll have a chance to meet:

Feadship: 214′ Trident – The Queen of the Show

Read “The Golden Anniversary Queen” story for more on Trident.
May we present her royal highness. A paragon of comfort, style and elegance, Trident, this year’s “Queen of the Show,” offers a superb synthesis of Feadship luxury at its best. She possesses a handsomely classic flared bow and modern and tasteful semi-circular extensions with glass bulwarkson the aft decks. Her Highness sees all, including three decks at once via fashion plates on the stern. With a full beam master stateroom fit for an aristocrat, the yacht offers superior accommodations to
the owners and twelve royal guests in seven luxurious suites. Don’t feel like taking the stairs? Use the elevator to travel up through the entire yacht to the sun deck inside, in a virtually seamless solid block of marble. Location: Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina.

Trinity Yachts: 196′ Bacarella

Calm, cool and classy. The largest of five superyachts designed and built by Trinity Yachts, LLC that will be presented by Trinity at this year’s show, Bacarella is charmingly cozy, refreshingly cool and smart as a whip. Her interior is designed by Bannenberg Designs and features mid-tone quarter sawn elm veneer, set out in panels, with the grain running 90 degrees along rebated nickel bands. The full beam owners’ suite is large, in charge and situated on the main deck. This superyacht accommodates a party of 12 in six staterooms, and a crew of 16 in eight cabins. She comes complete with two Caterpillar engines 3512B, producing 2,012 hp which provides for a top speed of approximately 15.5 knots. Her cruising range is 6,000 nautical miles at 10 knots and she’s outfitted with an advanced stabilizing system featuring Quantum 2x active fin with digital controls with Zero Speed™. Location: Bahia Mar, Face Dock 9A-9D

International Yacht Collection: Presents Heesen Yachts’ 164′ Man of Steel

Pocket full of kryptonite. Quite a few things are noteworthy about Man of Steel. But arguably, the most awe-inspiring feature is the floating glass floor over a bed of black river rock. Upon entering the yacht, you find yourself suspended on a piece of glass. The main salon lies in one direction and the illuminated glass walkway leads to a delicate day head and the VIP suite. The day head contains the same glass and black river rock floor, but here it unfurls up the feature wall, where it is no longer behind glass, but is exposed to the touch. Brilliant colors are drawn upon to create a lively, bright atmosphere in the lower level and especially in the “pop-culture” themed family room where a commissioned Bisazza tile mural is featured. Key recognizable elements such as the maccasa ebony wood, use of period correct sterling silver, crystal, and a platinum color scheme are re-edited into a fresh, modern, Art Deco-inspired salon space. You can pick up on Asian and Zen influences in the custom platforms for the furniture, the square proportions of the cushions, the glass-encased black river rock floor, and simplicity of the floral arrangements. Perhaps the most striking element of this yacht is the use of hot-rolled steel, which is threaded seamlessly and worked in elegantly throughout the yacht. The stairway floats off of the wall,
supported on a steel column, both designed and engineered by the owner himself. The stairs are created out of steel with carpet inserts. Steel is also a notable element in the reveals of the maces ebony cabinetry. Inviting royalty over for dinner? No need to worry, the glassware is all Baccarat and the dinnerware all Hermes. Location: Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina

Westport Shipyard: 164′ Evviva

Nouveau chic. A vessel as prized for the artistry of its contours as for the substance of its construction, Westport’s 164-ft. tri-deck flagship was developed using leading-edge three-dimensional modeling and structural software applications to meet every objective for speed, ride, maneuverability, integrity, quality and classing capability. The design and engineering teams collaborated with world-renowned designer Donald Starkey and prominent naval architect William Garden to develop a refined hull form for exceptional ocean-going performance, an innovative accommodation plan, which balances interior and on-deck spaces for maximum enjoyment and versatility, and a contemporary styling that ensures lasting appeal. The six-stateroom layout with on-deck full-beam master suite affords everyone a luxurious private retreat incorporating the finest fabrics, cabinetry, stone and leathers. An innovative arrangement includes a top-deck VIP suite with its own sun deck, a large formal dining room adjacent to the commercial-grade galley, and a garage aft for tenders and water toys. Designed for entertaining and relaxed socializing, the salon opens to a large covered aft deck with lounge, conversation areas and wet bar. Whether docking in Cannes for the red carpet film festival events or in Portofino for a glass of wine at sunset, you will arrive in style and on time. Location Hall of Fame, Face Dock 10-18

Christensen Shipyards: 160′ Odessa

Latest and greatest. The 160′ Odessa – the latest Christensen Custom Yacht – makes her international debut in Fort Lauderdale. Featuring an all-composite, vacuum-infused hull and superstructure, she has six spacious cabins, including the owners‘cabin, VIP cabin, and four guest cabins, which allow for up to 12 guests. The modern minimalist interior styling commands an attention to detail throughout with woodwork done in satin, black walnut, and complemented with custom stonework. The yacht’s exterior styling was done in-house by Christensen’s naval architects, and features a new forward-raised shear and coaming, combining classic lines and pre=”and “>sophisticated modern styling. Odessa also marks the first Christensen yacht to feature a black hull and silver painted superstructure. Powered by twin MTU 12V 4000 series engines, she will cruise at a comfortable 12 knots, while topping out at 18 knots. She is fully classified and certified to ABS (Maltese Cross) A1-AMS & MCA Unlimited Cruising. And after final fit out and sea trials, she’ll travel on her own to debut at the Fort Lauderdale show. Location: Bahia Mar, Face Dock 14A

Burger Boat Company: 151′ Sycara IV

Deco supremo. From the moment one boards Sycara IV they are transported back in time to the elegance and luxury reminiscent of yachting in the Art Deco era. The exterior styling incorporates teak and white painted paneling, madrone burl raised wall panels enhanced with inlaid macassar ebony and accented with paduak molding. Inside the main salon you’ll find teak and sycamore flooring coupled with custom carved geometric wool carpet demonstrating an elegant color scheme of off-white, cream, light gold and taupe neutrals accented with dark rich blue tones. The adjoining dining salon is a completely separate, private space with curved walls and French doors leading to the veranda. The main deck owners’ suite is generous in size, featuring an ensuite bath with madrone burl walls and a white onyx floor. The door is hand cast and finished with Lalique handcrafted crystal. The captain’s and crew cabins and baths continue the elegance of the Art Deco Era with white painted raised panel walls and contrasting mahogany beams, raised panel doors and trim. There is also a full service bar area and spa, so grab a martini and enjoy the ride. Location: Bahia Mar; Face Dock

Delta Marine: 151′ Katya

Sexy. Stylish. Smart. Katya, the latest delivery from Delta Marine, is sexy, stylish and smart. Her curves and sculpted lines are accentuated by a rich, warm shade of white, raised teak cap rail and red boot stripe. Her striking exterior is dominated by a long, raised sheer line with gentle slope. A centerline walkway splits the forward portion of the superstructure and large hull-side windows to lengthen her stance. The result: a sleek and graceful presence on the water. The main salon is surrounded by breathtaking views through large windows and curved glass entry doors. The yacht’s stone-floored foyer and central staircase with a unique brushed stainless balustrade and sweeping khaya handrail act as a focal point of fine craftsmanship and dramatic curves. Her decks, with large walk-arounds, offer a wide selection of entertaining and dining sites and options. In addition to the aft dining area on the main deck, the upper deck is also configured with a generous outdoor dining area for ten. The perfect spot for a dinner party to remember. Katya is styled by the in-house Delta Design Group, which is also responsible for the entire engineering package. Location: Bahia Mar, Face Dock 13N

Cheoy Lee Shipyards: 148′ Marco Polo

Trinity Yachts: 141′ Big City

Subtly sophisticated. Big City boasts a subtle, sophisticated interior, complemented by a distinctive dark blue hull. Designed by Patrick Knowles, her interior is exquisitely appointed with textured fabrics that add depth and distinction to the soft, calming décor featured throughout. She captures the nuances of both contemporary styling and traditional sensibilities. Most notable amongst her incredible features are the Portuguese bridge seating area located forward of the pilothouse and the 18′ x 28′ swim platform, a Trinity trademark, that is large enough to enjoy sunbathing or even dining, at sea level. Nothing has gone unnoticed on this sophisticated lady, from the top deck hot tub to the custom designed staterooms and luxuriously comfortable salon.

“Despite the recession, Informa’s 2009 Monaco Yacht Show has hosted more yachts and exhibitors than ever before and has proved an exceptional success”

The Government of Monaco and Prince Albert of Monaco were among attendees at this year’s event, joining other civic dignitaries from across the world.

As the world’s leading super yacht show, the MYS attracts a host of international luxury yachting industry professionals and participating in the show has become a must for industry leaders.

The MYS has supported the Monegasque Association against Muscular Dystrophy since 2001. This year MYS hosted a charity auction of 34 unique watches. Prestigious supporters of the auction included Cartier, Patek Phillipe, Louis Vuitton and Omega. The auction raised a staggering 2.3 million Euros, which will go towards fighting Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Commenting on the event, Peter Rigby, CEO of Informa, said:

“The Monaco Yacht Show is one of our flagship events in late summer. Despite the worldwide economic crisis, this year has been a fantastic success as the world’s premier yacht show.

As the drop in temperatures here in Texas marks the beginning of the fall season, so do the various boat shows around the world. Our first regional show is here on Clear Lake at the end of this month. Will be posting details and our line up in the next couple days.

Here is John Burnhams’, editor of boats.com introduction to the show season, with closer look at one of the first major Shows, Salon Nautique de Cannes.

Last week’s HISWA Te Water show in Ijmuiden (Holland) traditionally marks the start of the European Boat Show season, and this year, it featured more than 400 boats. This week, the show season really picks up the pace with two major events in adjacent countries, France and the United Kingdom.

We will report more from Southampton next week, but for the meantime offer some interesting statistics about the multi-national event going on in the south of France:

The Fashion’s Night Out event is once again just around the corner and lots of brands have planned some special items for the occasion. Timberland for example produced a special series of hand-sewn boat shoes, that will launch exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue on Fashion’s Night Out. Timberland will host a special in-store pop-up. You can purchase the sneaker on Fashion’s Night Out and on September 12th and can even watch the shoes being made. Via NYMag.

OH, I was just about to make my custom Timberland boat shoes when I saw this post, gave me some inspiration. These colors are amazing, and I won’t even get to the shoe, you already know what Timberland has been doing.

Well, with family in town this week we decided to take them out to see some of the city. Todays destination was the Ballard Locks.

When we got there I got a little sidetracked. See, while the locks are neat, there was also a boat show going on at the marina just down the street. Andy decided to join me so we walked down to check out what they had.

Andy enjoyed climbing on board any boat I would let him. I was greatful when he picked one of the least expensive and declared “Dad, we should get this one!” Although we are not in the market for a boat these days, it was great to have a little one on one time with Andy. And maybe someday we’ll get a boat.
