There have been two movies called “Sagaai” that I am aware of. The 1951 movie by this name had Premnath, Rehana, Yaaqoob, Gope, VijayLaxmi, Heeralal, Cuckoo etc in lead roles, where as the 1966 movie had Vishwajeet, Rajshree, Rehman, Prem Chopra, Asit Sen, Durga Khote etc in lead roles.

I have so far posted two songs from “Sagaai” (1962) and none from the 1951 movie. Here is a song fro “Sagaai” (1951) this time. This is a light hearted song sung by C Ramchandra and Rafi. It is picturised on Yaaqoob and Gope. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and C Ramchandra composed the music.

From the western music, it does appear to me that Chic Chocolate is the music arranger of this song.

In Hindi movies we often seen family album masquerading as a movie (viz the movie “Kal Aaj Aur Kal”), or a wedding album masquerading as a movie (” Hum Apke Hai Kaun”). Likewise they was a world tour album that masqueraded as a Hindi movie. This movie was called “Around the world in eight days”, which was shortened to “Around the world”.

In this movie Raj Kapoor and Rajshree would go on a world tour and like respectably Indian lead actors, sing songs at every opportunity.

Here Raj Kapoor and Rajshree are shown enjoying themselves on water on various kinds of boats.

It is interesting to see how Hasrat Jaipuri has tried the express the western experiences (that have no Indian equivalents) using Urdu words derived from Desi experiences.

Mukesh and Sharda (the latter being Shankar’s new found love, whom he was promoting heavily) sing this song. Shankar Jaikishan composed the music.

The song is a hummable song,undoubtedly.

“Ek Sholaa”(1958) is a forgotten movie by now. It had Pradeep Kumar and Mala Sinha in lead roles.

This movie was obviously a flop movie at the box office, and that too when the music of this movie was outstanding. It takes some doing for a movie, if it manages to end up bombing at the box office despite such wonderful music.

Do not take my word for granted. Here is a song from this movie. Just listen to it and judge for yourself. What superb lyrics (by Majrooh Sultanpuri), what nice soothing music (by Madan Mohan), and what lovely voices (by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi ). This is a superb example of a “Chhayaageet” song cum romantic song cum boat song, ideal for listening to late at night.

It is indeed another gem from Madan Mohan.

Here is a song from the very early days of Hindi talkies, viz 1937, only 6 years after Indian movies had started talking. The movie is “Vidyapati” (1937)

The print quality is not good, but the fact that such an old print survives is in itself a cause for rejoicing. The audio is not clear, but clear enough to be able to pick many of the words, if not all. I have not been able to decipher some of the words. Readers with keener ears are requested to inform me about any errors in the lyrics that I have noted down.

The song is a brief song, less than two minutes long, and the song is quite lovely to listen to. It is sung by Kanan Devi and picturised on herself in an era when actors had to sing “live” and playback singing was yet to start.

Kidar Sharma is the lyricist and music is composed by R C Boral. The lyrics are mostly in chaste Hindi and these words are delightful to listen to.

PS-I thank Jitendra for the corrections. The lyricist Kidar Sharma has used Shuddh Hindi words as well as words of some regional dialects in this song which are not commonly herad in Hindi songs.

These days I am posting songs from the movie “Saarangaa” (1960) which is a treasure of some superb songs.

Here is another song from this movie. It is a romantic song where Jayshree Gadkar and Sudesh Kumar meet with each other and sing this happy love song. They make such a good looking pair. Jayshree looks so unbelievably pretty in this song and in this movie. I wonder why she began to look haggard in hr subsequent movies.

Here is a well known song from a well known movie. The song is “Mera Naam Raju gharaana anaam” and it is from “Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai” (1960).

The song is sung by Mukesh and it is picturised on Raj Kapoor as a boat song. The song is an introduction song where Raj Kapoor, carrying a “dafli” introduces himself by singing this song. Thus this song is a “dafli” song as well. It is a category that I thought about just now.

Shailendra is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music.

This song is a boat song and going by the title of the movie, one may guess that the song is picturised on a boat on the river Ganga, but that is not the case. This song is picturised on river Narmada near Jabalpur at the spot called Bhedaghat. Raj Kapoor had his “sasuraal” at Jabalpur and he has shot quite a few songs at this location.

I had mentioned in one of my earlier posts that I keep an excel sheet to keep track of all the songs posted, as well as all the farmaishes sent by readers. It appears that Sid, a longtime reader and farmaish sender of this blog also maintains an excel sheet to keep track of the farmaishes sent. Sid would often remind me of farmaishes sent long time back.

Here is one such long pending farmaish, whose reminder was also duly given to me.:) This is one song that I had never heard before.

It is a lovely song, and indeed this song belongs to several categories. This song, which is sung by Rafi and picturised on Dev Anand and others, is a bicycle song, which subsequently becomes a boat song as well.

This movie is “Baat Ek Raat Ki” (1962). Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and S D Burman is the music director.

Here is a song from “Aaya Saawan Jhoom Ke” (1969). It is prima facie a boat song, but on second thoughts it is an inspirational song as well.

The song is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on a boat where Dharmendra, Asha Parekh Aruna Irani and a kid (looks familiar but I am unable to tell his name- can any reader help to identify him ?). Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Laxmikant Pyarelal composed the music.
PS-The kid is Master Shahid. I thank Greta (Memsaab)- a regular identifier of such obscure artists for us.

This is a “maajhi” (boatman) song which was a speciality of S D Burman. Here Laxmikant Pyarelal provide their own version of Maajhi song.

This song, like so many other Rafi songs has gone on to become a timeless classic.

Aadmi chiraagh hai uski chalegi kyaa

One song from “Barkha” was discussed in the past where Jagdeep is shown driving a bullock cart and singing a song. It turns out that Jagdeep has another song in the movie and this time he sings it while ferring a few people in a boat. One actor lip syncing two songs while using two different modes of transportation ! It must be quite rare, I am sure. I have not seen the movie, and so I cannot say for sure if Jagdeep is shown singing more songs in this movie while riding bicycle, buffalo, helicopter etc. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this matter.

One thing that everyone notices in songs picturised on Jagdeep is that he cannot keep a straight face and put up a sombre face even when the situation so demads. Jagdeep looks like breaking into a laughter even in serious situations. Lip syncing this song certainly demanded Jagdeep to be do so with a serious and grim face, but no, he cannot help grin even in a song like this.

There have been several great Rafi songs that have been sadly wasted on Jagdeep and this song is one such song. It took quite a movies on the part of B grade movie makers before then finally wrote Jagdeep off as a serious hero.

This song is better heard than watched and the song is a fantastic philosophical song. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composeed by Chitragupta.

Pardesiyon se na ankhiyaan milaanaa

I think I need to create another artificial category of songs, viz. “songs that I thought were already posted but I was wrong” category.

Take this song “pardesiyon se na ankhiyaan milaanaa” for instance. I was under the impression that this song was already posted long back. But it turns out that I had posted another song from this movie “Jab Jab Phool Khile”(1965). It is when a new reader of this blog enquired about this song that I realised this fact.

Here is this song now. This song is a boat song, which is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on Shashi Kapoor and Nanda. This song is picturised on Kashmir’s Dal lake. Kashmir and Dal lake used to be very popular places for picturisation of important scenes in Bollywood movies during 1960s.

This memorable song is written by Anand Bakshi and music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

PS-This song has a Lata version as well. Then there is a Rafi sad version of the song too. All this makes this song a multiple version song.

How many of us have heard of this movie called “Jhoola” ? I had not, and I guessed that a movie by this name must be from early 1950s, since this title rhymed with titles of those days, viz “Mela”, “Jhamelaa” etc.

But it turns out that this movie came up one decade later, viz in 1962. this movie has some wonderful songs in it that are not as well known as they should be. I have posted one song from this movie in the past which was sung by Mukesh and Lata.

Here is another song from this movie. It is a boat song which is sung by Rafi and Lata and it is picturised on Sunil Dutt, Vyjyanti Mala and others. The song is written by Rajinder Krishan and music is composed by Salil Chaudhary.

The song quickly grown on you and I will be surprised if you remeber this song for the rest of the day. And if some people find this song resembling “Jawaani ki rail kahin chhoot na jaaye” from “Coolie”, then let them remember that this “Jhoolaa” song came two decades earlier.

So here is this obscure song from “Jhoolaa” (1962) which deserves to be a much better known song than what it is.

I have listened to this song in the past and liked it too, but all this while I was totally ignorant about the details of this song. The only thing I knew about this song is that the song is sung by Rafi.

I stumbled upon this song again yesterday, and this time I was able to get the details of this song. It is such a well known song, but few people may have heard about the movie this song is from. The movie is called “Isharaa”(1964). The movie had Joy Mukherji and Vyjyanti Mala in lead roles. I never knew that these two had acted together in a movie.

Watching this song is a pleasant surprise. This song is picturised on the location of Tajmahal, and that makes this song a very exclusive genre of song, viz “Tajmahal” song. Yes, I have posted a few such “Tajmahal” songs in this blog.

In addition, this song becomes a boat song towards the last stanza of the song.

The song itself is a wonderful song to listen to, and that is how most people have known this song. This song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

I am certainly happy to be able to listen (and watch) this song. I am sure the readers of this blog too will enjoy this song.

Late 1960s was when Bollywood movie music was at its zenith. The quality and quantity of great songs those days was just mind boggling. Many great songs created those days found themselves to be marginalised and elbowed out in this stiff competition. No one has really chronicled all the great songs of those years, but I am sure that the number of such songs must be in several hundreds, if not in thousands.

Here is a song from those days. I do not recall ever listening to this song. There could be many reasons for that. The main reason is that the movie failed to catch the fancy of the public. With much better actors available, who was going to watch a Shashi Kapoor-Nanda movie called “Raja Sahab” (1969). Yes, this song belonged to this movie.

The song is sung by Rafi. It is a boat song as well as a teasing song. It is picturised on Shashi Kapoor and Nanda, as already warned.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Kalyanji Anandji composed the music.

In this blog, I post songs that I categorise into different categories. Among them, there is one artificial category of songs (not yet formalised). These are songs that were very popular in its days during my formative years. I enjoyed these songs a lot without having any clues about their details. After that these songs would be forgotten with time. After a passage of three decades or more, I would stumble upon them one again. And this time, I would get to know these songs better. As far as I and several followers of this blog in my age group are concerned, these songs were immortal songs. As least they will remain so in our psyche.

Here is one such song that I stumbled upon again recently. This song “Shaam dhale Jamuna kinaare” was amazingly popular in its days. But no one (read yours truly) was aware about its details except the names of the singers. Now I am better informed, This song is sung by Manna Dey and Lata. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Laxmikant Pyarelal composed the music. The song is “Pushpaanjali” (1970) aforgotten movie which was full of some awesome songs.

I am still now aware about how and on whom this song was picturised. The link for this song is an audio link. One of these days I may be able to find out about its picturisation too, sinvce the VCD of this song is lying there somewhere with me. Till I am able to locate it, let us enjoy the audio of this wonderful song from my childhood days.

PS- The video of the song was not available anywhere. Then I dug up my VCDs and found that I had the VCD of this song with me. So here is the video of this song too. Now I see that the song is picturised as a boat song. Several people are travelling by the boat including Naina Sahu, Sanjay Khan etc. Naina lip syncs in Lata’s voice and a Sadhu (who is he ?) accompanied by other Sadhus lip sync in Manna Dey’s voice.

Manna Dey is not a singer who got as many singing assignments as the other leading playback singers. Despite that, the list of Manna Dey’s songs makes for very impressive reading.

Here is one of the lesser known songs sung by Manna Dey. This song is a duet in fact, where he is joined by Lata. The movie is “Qaidi no. 911″ (1959). The song is picturised on Mehmood and Nanda. Yes, those were the days when Mehmood would often be seen playing the roles of hero as well.

Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Dattaram, who often serves as assistant to Shankar Jaikishan is the music director.

I have posted a song from “Veer Babhruwaahan” (1950) in the past. Here is another song from this movie.

This song is a “boat” song, picturised on Mridula and many of her sahelis (as a Radio Ceylon announcer of those days would have put it ). The song is sung by Geeta Dutt. Anjum Jaipuri is the lyricist and Chitragupta composed the music.

It is a lovely song to listen to. Boat flowing serenely on river, and a few young girls frolicking on the boat and singing a song ! Beautiful ! And this song captures the sitation very well.

There are very well known songs that remain well known to this day. Then there are songs that one may have listened to in distant past, never to be heard again. It is rather like Bollywood lost and found stories where family members get separated in childhood.

When one gets to “meet” these songs again, after three or four decades, it is very much like an emotional reunion of long lost relatives. One wonders how such a fine song fell into such hard days of obscurity, when it should have been a chartbuster.

Here is a forgotten song from a movie called “Jaal”. No, this is not the “Jaal” (1951) of Dev Anand fame, rather this movie is “Jaal” (1967) which is now an obscure movie. It had Vishwajeet, Mala Sinha and Sujeet Kumar in lead roles.

What a suberbly sung song it is ! It is Rafi at his divine best here. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist. No, the music is not by Madan Mohan, but by the then up and coming Laxmikant Pyarelal.

This song was a reasonably popular song of its time and people would love listening to this song, even if they were not aware about the details of this song.

With time, this song has been forgotten, but this song deserves to be better known.

This song is from “Do Jasoos” (1975), a comedy movie where Raj Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar play two bumbling detectives (thus the title “Do Jasoos”). But then middle aged detectives are not supposed to sing romantic songs (which is a must in Bollywood movies), so two youngsters, Shalilendra Singh and Bhawana Bhatt was roped in for this job.

Shailendra Singh is the same person who made his playback debut singing for Rishi Kapoor is “Bobby” (1973). Here in this movie, he makes his acting debut. Bhawana Bhatt too makes her acting debut in this movie.

This song is a lovely “boat” song which is such nicely by Shailendra Singh and Lata and it is picturised on Shailendra Singh and Bhawana Bhatt. Ravindra Jain is the music director. Normally, he used to write the lyrics too, but it seems that this song was written not by him but by Hasrat Jaipuri.

It is a lovely song to listen to, which can cheer up the listeners every time without fail.

“Aadmi Aur Insaan” (1969) was a movie starring Dharmendra, Saira Bano, Feroz Khan etc. The songs of this movie were very popular in its days.

And curiously enough, I had never heard this song before. This song is a sentimental song picturised on a boat, making it a senbtimental boat song by my classification. The picturisation also shown Dharmendra and Feroz Khan.

I have posted two songs from “Nadiya Ke Paar” (1982). This movie is full of wonderful heart warming songs in it. With time, I feel that these songs have become even sweeter to listen to.

Here is another nice song from this movie. This song is a duet sung by Suresh Wadkar (and not Jaspal Singh, unlike other songs) and Hemlata. The song is picturised on Sachin and Sadhana Singh. Ravindra Jain is the lyricist as well as the music director.

Here is a song which sounds like it belongs to a Shammi Kapoor movie. And indeed it has almost all the ingredients of a Shammi Kapoor movie except the great man himself. The movie is “Ek Musaafir Ek Haseena” (1962) which appeared on the scene almost in the same era as “Junglee”. This movie has Joy Mukherji and Sadhana in lead roles.

Earlier I had posted a song from “Jaal” (1952) which was sung by Lata. Now I have found that there is another Lata song in this movie, and like the earlier song, this song too is “new” for me.

Here is this lovely song “pighla hai sonaa door gagan par”. This song is a boat song which is picturised on Geeta Bali and others on a boat.

Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist and S D Burman is the music director. What a lovely and heart warming song it is. And this is my feeling after I have heard this song just a few times. With time, this song could grow upon me some more.
