While driving into work the other day. I was listening to Bob and Tom interview a comedian that proudly stated he had no email and no computer. He didn’t see the need for them. He did admit there are some people who really need it in their jobs to function, but not in his. Bob and Tom told him “yeh, it’s pretty difficult to get in touch with you.” I can only imagine.

A day without being online in my job would be a train wreck. Who wants to go back to the days of faxing client correspondence or trying to describe a logo, photo or ad concept solely by a phone call description? No online world would mean not being able to connect with people all over the world. A day without a computer would restrict my Facebook connections, Twitter alerts, Ning site comment alerts or RSS feeds and all the other information at my fingertips.

But being online isn’t all about business. It’s also about relationships. Here’s a perfect example: Last week, I got an email from a friend that pulls at your heartstrings. My friend is enduring some incredible health issues with her two sons and husband. Both of her boys have a genetic condition known as hemophilia, their DAILY dose of medicine for both kids equates to approximately $6000 (yes $6000 per day!). The family’s insurance is about to run out since they have almost met their lifetime maximum. As if worrying about her children wasn’t enough, her husband has found tumors in his body. Here’s her email…

“This Holiday season our family is asking for your help and all it takes is about 2 minutes on your computer. The Druckenmiller household spent 61 days in the hospital this year, which is quite an improvement from 2008 which topped out right around 100. 2010 is going to bring some more challenges for our home as Jeff is experiencing complications from his numerous tumors inside of his body and will travel to Rochester the first week of January to begin the process of detecting which one or ones will need to be removed. In the past this has been a 6-12 week recovery time for Jeff and all of that time off work= no income. Each hospital stay not only takes away our income but also brings in more bills and less time to spend together as a family. As we finish our 2009, with hopefully no more hospital stays, we are also hoping to have a great holiday season together as a family.

Greg Hahn is like the quiet guy at a party who tips back a couple drinks and suddenly has something to say.

Loudly.

Only in this L.A. comedian’s case, it’s more a pot of coffee, power nap and maybe five sets of squat lunges before he bounds on stage, going from calm to insanely spastic with the flick of a spotlight.

“You know how when you’ve had three beers at a party, you’re around people you like and you’re absolutely happy? That’s what I try to recreate for my shows,” Greg says. “All week you gotta work, work, work, go to school or whatever; you’ve got Friday and Saturday night to be out with your people, and that’s as fun as it gets!”

Greg isn’t just the life of the party, though. He’s a walking exclamation point. After an hour of uncontrollable laughter, prodded relentlessly by the veteran comedian’s unique and wildly physical style, crowd members are quite literally exhausted … just from watching.

But contrary to what fans might believe from seeing him live or after watching clips of the comic on, say, The Bob and Tom Radio Show, Comedy Central, late-night TV or even after-show interviews, Greg does come with an “off” switch.

“I should do my show and just hide backstage; that would leave the impression ‘that guy must be crazy all the time’,” Greg ponders good-naturedly. “But you have to be calm, you have to rejoin society … Or when I got off stage I would be constantly tased.”

The former Marine Corps captain may not get daily doses of that painful end of a police taser, but he’s probably no stranger to be shushed, either. Growing up, Greg says he hated school. Hated. It.

“‘Hold still’ and ‘be quiet’? The answer to those are ‘no’ and ‘no.’ I wanted to be outside!” he recalls with a laugh. “It was very difficult to hold still and do homework, but luckily (now) I’ve got a job where I can move around and talk and yell and go nuts. I mean, I wasn’t the class clown or anything … I just couldn’t wait to get out of there! It’s much more fun to run than sit still, and shake and shimmy as you can tell seeing me on stage.”

Appleton is in store for one crazy ride when Greg Hahn makes his big return to the Fox Valley for five Special Event performances this week Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 6 – 8 at Skyline Comedy Cafe. (**Lightning-fast comedy road veteran Mike Allen headlines Wednesday, Aug. 5, and brings a signature savvy grit and subtle humor to feature for Greg Hahn Aug. 6-8.)

“I’m psyched to be there! I do mostly corporate shows, but I always take my favorite clubs, and that’s definitely one of my favorite clubs, one of my favorite places to be,” Greg gushes. “The crowds are just great! And when I’m there, I’m having just as much fun as they are.”

But how on Earth do comedy fans prep for a Greg Hahn experience?

“By ordering, like, a big cold beer or their favorite drink, bring somebody they like, they kick back and just enjoy the pandemonium, sit back and enjoy the circus,” he suggests (in less than a breath).

But seriously, what are we getting ourselves into?

“I’m less topical and more ridiculous,” Greg offers. “I’d rather have people forget about what’s going on modern day and just deal with the absurd, whatever I’m talking about.”

A fervent fan of stand-up all his life, Greg says he always gravitated toward comedians who refrained from being long-winded, and instead got right to the funny. People like Rodney Dangerfield, Steve Martin, unknown comics from The Gong Show.

“I never liked to be bored. I just didn’t have a lot of patience, you know? So that’s what I tended toward when I designed my acts,” Greg says. “I like people that really bring it.”

Back in the pre-historic age before satellite radio and audio books on I-Pod, I used to amuse myself on the interminable one hour drive to work with The Bob and Tom Show on Q95 out of Indy. One of their regular schticks was a feature called The Mister Obvious Show, a parody of radio advice shows. On one of the funniest of these, a caller described a driving problem causing multiple accidents. Eventually Mr. Obvious had to tell the caller to remove his automobile sunshade before starting to drive. (I tried desperately to find a copy of this bit on YouTube or anywhere else on the internet, but came up empty.) In a prime example of life imitating art, we have the following:Study: Texting, Driving More Dangerous Someone actually had to do a study to show that you’re really more likely to have an accident if you are typing while you’re driving? We can only assume that this same group will soon enlighten us with the startling conclusion that the plane is more likely to crash if the engines stop running.

Here’s another example of why I continue to be amazed that we even survive as a species:Tanning beds now listed among top cancer risks – USATODAY.com There’s a tanning salon right next to the Arthur Murray studio where Mrs. Left and I spend every spare moment. The tanning place is busy 365 days per year, including the hottest and sunniest days of summer. Most of the customers are IU students, and many of them pause in their body bronzing pursuits only long enough to catch a quick smoke just outside the doors. Presumably magazines and newspapers are unavailable at the university, or all those millions of studies that show that cigarettes and ultraviolet radiation are easily avoided risks of cancer are “before their time”.

A Scary Vampire! You won’t find any of these in Indiana!

Indiana is famous for our almost total lack of Vampire attacks. in 2007 there was not a single reported Vampire attack, and less than a dozen, all of questionable honesty, every other year within record. No other state has such a clean record on Vampires, especially not notorious hot-spots for the children of the eternal night, such as Louisiana and Washington state.

A Vampire! Well versed in the Dark Arts with fearsome, unimaginable power!

Why is this?

It’s because of our CORN!. Yes, Corn is notoriously effective against Vampires. In fact, the increasing widespread use of corn and corn-syrup in nearly ALL food in the United States has lead to the general drop of Vampire attacks in general, but not enough to poison these ancient creatures of graceful terror, but merely to cause our blood to be less palatable and thus less the grand feast that our tender, pale napes once offered.

Corn contains in it a special enzyme, VLA-4, which iun turn causes corn to emit, through it’s silk, a certain hormone which is repellent to vampires. VLA-4 itself, when ingested by the deathless ones causes vaporization, much like the sun.

This Vampire has seen corn and knows fear!

Indiana is so corn-locked that at all times of the year the air is permeated with a stink that keeps vampires from leaving their miserable dark holes in Kentucky to pursue our succulent human blood.

It is because our glorious corn provides with protection from a monster that once treated our ancestors like cattle that Hoosiers offer up thanks to the Spirit of Corn in the Sky: B’bb’n'T’mm

Indiana is proud to be vampire-free, but what what about other states?

The Pepsi Corporation has recently begun selling a High Fructose Corn Syrup free version of Pepsi and Mountain Dew, instead using the heretical CANE SUGAR sweetener! Cane sugar is more expensive and less deliciously sweet than High Fructose Corn Syrup, and carries none of the vampire-repelling benefits. Why would anyone do such a thing?

Could it be…THE VAMPIRES?

We don’t know for sure, but the Indiana Historical Institute has been tracking the sales of all Pepsi CANE SUGAR swetened soft-drinks since this began in order to determine whether these Luddite tendencies in America’s soft-drink consumption habbits pose any threat, or are in some way connected. At this time we believe that the vampires, fed up with our less delicious blood whcich they still require for sustenance have decided to enjoy a refreshing Soda Pop as a sort of chaser, but needed something palatable.

It may thus be justified to run a stake through the heart of anyone drinking this “throwback” softdrink, or who suggests that High Fructose Corn Syrup has become too much of a part of the American diet.

This Vampire has fed well, but not on Hoosiers! Suck that Fatty McDracula!

The Indiana Historical Institute is just as avowedly anti-vampire as we are Pro-Hoosier, Pro-America, and Pro-B’bb’n'T’mm! We will keep you posted on developments as they come.
