Me refiero a la archiconocida “Do They Know It’s Christmas” de Band Aid.

Between 11am and 7pm on this day, the new-pop elite entered the studio to record the most famous charity single of all time: Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas. Watch the video – Boy George, Phil Collins, George Michael, Simon Le Bon, Sting, Tony Hadley, Paul Weller and Bono (of course). Its good to see them before they got so fat and old (and self-congratulatory, smug, etc. etc.).

Maybe the haste of the production explains some of the points that are criticized. The lyrics were open to attack. Some say the picture painted of Africa is inaccurately bleak, for example, a continent with ‘no rain…no rivers flow’. Maybe the muesli-knitters among you would say its a bit ‘Christian-centric’, and the hammering of the traditional image of Christmas is a bit overdone. Bob Geldof wanted to get the record out, and raise the money, as soon as possible. That might explain some oversights or insensitivity.

-

The other attack on Band Aid was the self-righteousness of those involved. The glossy video (by 80s standards, remember) distracted the public from the realities of famine in Ethiopia, some said. The anarcho-punk band Chumbawumba, who would later attack John Prescott in the 90s, released a parody album in 1986 called Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records. The tracks were an unsubtle critique of the shameless self-promotion of some 80s popstars. They stupidly lumped in the Band Aid project with, for example, Queen’s tour of apartheid South Africa around the same time. Isn’t it very easy to be very cynical about everything.

-

Morrissey went straight for the jugular, and simply accused it of ‘inflicting daily torture on the people of England’. Heaven knows he’s miserable.

-

A Stock-Aitken-Waterman version was released in 1989, with only Bananarama remaining from the original group. And the addition of, amongst others, Bros, Jason Donovan, Cliff Richard and Rolf Harris. Unsurprisingly its an embarrassment. I challenge you to get past the first minute, bearing in mind that life is short. Too short for this, which much more like torture. A bit like Saw, only darker and with mullets.

The original, recorded on the 25th November, was then released and became Christmas number one and the biggest selling record of all time. It raised £60 million to victims of famine. It’s hard to argue with that, even if it did give some idiots even more publicity and cash.

If you hadn’t already checked Pitchfork or NME today then you’ll be blissfully unaware that U2 are headlining next year’s Glastonbury festival. I’m going to make it known early on in this piece that I fucking hate U2. I have nothing positive to say about them at all. They don’t evoke any emotion in me at all other than the desire to take a sledgehammer to my stereo. Admittedly it is mainly Bono himself who annoys me; sneakily walking between the shadows of God and Bob Geldof, poking his head out whenever there’s a disaster or an appeal he hasn’t yet lent his name to.

There’s that old joke isn’t there:

What’s the difference between Bono and God?

God doesn’t strut around thinking he’s Bono.

And it’s true, Bono does think he’s above everyone else – a higher being as it were. U2 are definitely not one of the band’s who you could see hanging out with, they’re the band who would have you escorted 100 metres away from the rose petals scattered before them as they waltz into the VIP section of that club you’re not posh enough to get into.

Alas this is about U2 headlining Glastonbury and it is a coup for those attending Worthy Farm next year. Tickets to see U2 on their 360 tour were selling for upwards of £50 and if you looked on eBay then it was well into the hundreds. A single Glasto ticket next year is £185 (plus booking fee and postage etc), so you’re actually getting a very good deal. There are seven stages at Glastonbury, culminating in hundreds of bands and you could have paid your £185 to just see U2 alone! If you’re attending Glasto and a U2 fan then you have won the game! Congratulations!

Also for those of you big on rumours, here’s the current roundup for Glastonbury 2010:

Bon Jovi
Chemical Brothers
Dizzee Rascal
Elbow
Florence And The Machine
Levellers
Led Zeppelin/Robert Plant
Muse
Pet Shop Boys
Pulp
Rolling Stones

Aufgenommen am 25. November 1984 von dem britischen Popstar-Projekt Band Aid

Band Aid - Do They Know It’s Christmas?

Die Story hinter “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?”

Zu den wichtigsten Hits zählen unter anderem “Vienna”, “Passing Strangers”, “All stood still”, “The Voice”, “The Thin Wall”, “Hymn”, “Monument”, “We came to dance”, “Reap the wild Wind”, “Visions in Blue”, “Lament”, “Dancing with Tears in my Eyes”, “One small Day”, “Heart of the Country”, “Man of two Worlds”, “Love’s great Adventure”, “Same old Storys” und “All fall down”… und das sind nur die Hits mit Ultravox! Solo und in anderen Projekten zählen zu Midge Ure’s Hit-Vita unter anderem noch “Fade to Grey” (mit Visage) sowie “If i was”, “That certain Smile”, “Just for you”, “Dear God”, “Sister and Brother” (Duett mit Kate Bush), “Cold, cold Heart”, “Breathe” oder “Move me”.

Oktober 1953 in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire in Schottland.

Midge Ure in den Adelsstand und ernennt ihn zum “Officer of the Order of the British Empire”.

Zugabe! 10 wissenswerte Fakten zu “Last Christmas” und “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?”

Die höchste Chartplatzierung gelang im Veröffentlichungsjahr 1984 in Großbritannien mit Platz 2 – die Spitzenposition hatte damals ein Lied namens “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?” inne.

9, “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?” bleibt in Großbritannien fünf Wochen lang die Nummer 1 und verkauft sich in dieser Zeit rund 3 Millionen Mal. Insgesamt mutiert “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?” zur meistverkauften Single aller Zeiten.

10, Seltsam: Ausgerechnet in den USA erreichte “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?” nur Platz 13.

Now we all know that YES2009 is a thinly veiled data-mining operation of massive proportions.

But a few days ago I received a free ticket via their lucky draw, so yay me: free hotel stay! Chen Chow pointed out that I was but part of a fortunate 500 who were selected out of 550,000 people, for a 0.1% success rate. And off I went to YES2009 as a delegate. Gratis, muchos gracias.

And now the best (read: aptest, most truthful, critical, scathing) review so far of the event has been by Zedeck Siew on KLue, and adding to the cacophony of post-YES2009 comments are my rants.

One must wonder, though, why no one has written about all this except Zedeck, especially given the massive media coverage of the event (CNN, IHT [what. really? official partnership = free IHT newspapers in their definition], Media Prima, et al] with the Malaysian journos and dozens of self-proclaimed twitterati in attendance.

But we all know why.

***

This was how low the New Straits Times stooped:

Net-savvy Najib is way to go, says Facebook’s Zuckerberg

Twitter founder applauds Najib for embracing new media

***

YES2009 was held in the Putrajaya International Convention Center, which despite its spanking interior design and impressive architecture, was a massive flop.

Wi-fi sucked ass, and was as steadfast as Ibrahim Ali and Jelapang’s Hee Yit Foong. But the clincher was that the designer of the 5,000?-seat auditorium did not find it fitting to place plug points anywhere near the audience, and where plug points were placed, they did not work. Syabas, Malaysia boleh!

If this is an International Convention Center, my college Lecture Hall must surely qualify to be an Interplanetary Convention Center. Okay, bad joke.

***

What was truly disappointing was not the USD450 ticket price, the non-engagement (only two questions from the floor for Biz Stone, really?), the shoddy logistics, the shitty Hotel Malaya with its nonexistent wake-up call, or the misnomer “Youth Engagement Summit,” as Zedeck points out. Rather it was the patronizing attitude with which the organizers saw fit to treat the “youth” in the summit. This is the biggest irony of it all: that a convention supposed to “inspire” and “empower” youth import and duplicate such “adult” condescension from the outside world.

Right before the summit began I went to relieve myself, as is my habit, trained no less by 11 years of Malaysian education. When I came back, however, a couple of delegates and I were told to “wait outside” because “dia kata apabila pintu dah tutup, tak boleh buka” (instructions are that once the doors are closed they cannot be opened again). Right.

So I asked “Bang, dalam ada tandas tak?” (Are there bathrooms inside [the auditorium]?)

“Takde.” (No)

“Ah. Jadi bagaimana?” (How now, brown cow?)

The guy was hesitant, but another person in charge was nicer, smarter, and opened the door for the rest of us to go in.

Such bullshit. Of course I was incensed. As if they were going to tell captains of industry or CEOs that they could not go to pee, because if they did, they would not be allowed in. This was way before the summit started, and when we were allowed in the band had just begun playing their opening song.

This was the attitude with which YES2009 treated its youth delegates throughout the event.

Underlying this condescension was a sickening, parallel system which treated “non-delegates” better. Youth delegates who came for free (all 500 of us) were given blue tags, and everyone else (sponsors, media, paying delegates), who probably outnumbered the youth, had tags of different colours (refer to picture).

In this system, non-delegates sat in front; the youth sat at the back, away from the speakers.

Non-delegates could go pee anytime they wanted; youth delegates would be locked out.

Non-delegates could enter the auditorium from the ground floor; youth delegates, coming from lunch at the cafeteria on the ground floor, had to enter the auditorium after a pointless climb on three or four escalators, and take their seats after descending a few flights of stairs.

During tea breaks non-delegates and youth delegates were served in exclusive areas: no cross-socialization was allowed.

These are small things, yes, but all these small things exactly replicate the inequality in access, status, opportunity, information, and networks that the youth face, vis-a-vis the rich, old, connected, and powerful, in the outside world. That a self-proclaimed equalizer of the playing field (“where opinions, discussions, and experiences can be shared”) can duplicate real-world, systemic, structural barriers is the ultimate irony.

Youth Engagement Summit? More like Non-Engagement Summit. Or Non-Youth Engagement Summit.

***

Of course there were good things.

Goethe-quoting Geldof was very inspiring.

I had fun, I met amazing people, I stayed in a shitty hotel, and (this is for you, Zedeck) I talked to some very cool Indonesians about rasa sayange and batik and told them how much I liked their Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi (Corruption Eradication Commission).

All in all, however, it was a very expensive (rumour has it that Sime Darby paid RM5 million? and AirAsia more than that?) summit that did not walk its talk. Really, all I wanted to do was to meet more amazing South East Asians. But there was no time and no structured program through which to do so. Ahmad, fellow Malaysian, shares my longing for more engagement.

And thus, YES2009 is at most but a wasted opportunity: feel-good, inspiring in the vaguest sense possible, and enjoyable for most participants, but utterly and sickeningly hypocritical for me.

2002, una irlandese in Erasmus a Berlino mi racconta che aveva avuto un ragazzo italiano e infatti conosce una frase: “Volleeo Kee-avah-ree“;

I don´t like Mondays.

The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload
And nobody’s gonna go to school today
She’s gonna make them stay at home
And daddy doesn’t understand it
He always said she was good as gold
And he can see no reasons
‘Cos there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be show-ow-ow-ow-own?
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
I wanna shoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oot the whole day down

The Telex machine is kept so clean
And it types to a waiting world
And mother feels so shocked
Father’s world is rocked
And their thoughts turn to their own little girl
Sweet 16 ain’t that peachy keen
Now that ain’t so neat to admit defeat
They can see no reasons
‘Cos there are no reasons
What reasons do you need?
Oh Oh Oh Oh

Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
I wanna shoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oot
The whole day down, down, down, shoot it all down

And all the playing’s stopped in the playground now
She wants to play with her toys a while
And school’s out early and soon we’ll be learning
And the lesson today is how to die
And then the bullhorn crackles
And the captain tackles
With the problems and the hows and whys
And he can see no reasons
‘Cos there are no reasons
What reason do you need to die, die?
Oh Oh Oh

Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like
I don’t like (Tell me why)
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like
I don’t like (Tell me why)
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
I wanna shoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oot the whole day down

It has been 25 years since the 1984-85 Ethiopian famine that inspired Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to write the song do they know it’s christmas?

The Ethiopian government is marking the anniversary in the most appropriate way: by appealing for food aid from the international community to assist the more than 6.2 million of its citizens who are faced with starvation sans food aid. Yes, over the last 25 years the government of Ethiopia has not been able to put in place systems to guarantee its people food security. It is almost like 1985 never happened. Agriculture (which is dominated by coffee) accounts for over 40% of GDP and makes up 60% of Ethiopian exports (CIA factbook). Now, I am no expert on agricultural economics or on Ethiopia per se but I am willing to bet a few hundred shillings that Addis must be favoring cash-cropping over basic food security. I guess it is just a lot easier to tax coffee exports than peasant agriculture – especially if you have an expensive autocratic system to maintain.

I say food aid should be conditioned on Meles Zenawi loosening his grip on power. Just like food aid during the last famine helped prolong the civil war at the time (see Alex de Waal), giving Zenawi food aid without any preconditions will just continue to perpetuate the very system that has been unable to guarantee food security for Ethiopians. Sen’s beliefs on autocracies and famines are partly true. Ethiopians continue to have these cycles of famine because Addis does not have to listen to the average peasant in Afar.

This does not mean that we should heartlessly sit back and watch millions of people die. No, those that can should assist as many people as is possible. However, while at it, the international community should insist on fairer government in Addis. It doesn’t have to be about regime change through elections or those other democratic stuff. All is needed is a guarantee of the chance for average Ethiopians to live decent lives without having to worry about major famines every decade or so.

Species Name: Hypocraticus Selfrighteousius

Uno! Dos! Tres! Go fuck yourself! I don’t trust any guy who can’t count to the number four in Spanish. I don’t get Bono or U2. People are obsessed with this band, hence their staying power over the last thirty years. I myself never found them all that talented. For fucks sake, their guitarist was too cool to have a real name and therefore had to deem himself “The Edge.” What an asshole. You don’t see Jimmy Page or Keith Richards needing to have some douchey name. You know why? Because they’re fucking talented musicians and didn’t have to hide behind a gimmick. But this post isn’t about U2 per se, it’s about the root of the problem: Bono.

I despise this man, and I probably shouldn’t. Everyone says, “how can you hate him? He’s such a great humanitarian.” He may be a great humanitarian, but the problem I have with Bono is that he wants to rub it in your face every chance he gets. This smarmy, self-righteous, narcissistic wanker is so proud of himself and his mission to save the world, there is no stage big enough for Bono to scream about it on. What happened to modesty and dignity? What happened to silently donating money to good causes? Bono takes every opportunity to say, “Look how fucking awesome I am. Why don’t you get off your fat arse and try to be as awesome as me?” I see Bono’s question, and raise him another question, “If you care so much about the little people and making the world a better place, why the fuck do your fans have to sell their first born to go to one of your concerts?” I wish Bono’s tinted sunglasses would teleport him to another dimension so I wouldn’t have to see his ugly mug anymore. In fact, let’s imagine a world without that big headed piss hole.

In a world where everyday would be a “Beautiful Day” because Bono wouldn’t be around to ruin it:

We wouldn’t be left asking the question, “Bono, are either of those girls, your wife?”

Other bands would see the need to progress in their music, instead of churning out the same bullshit every few years like U2.

We would have never been able to see…whatever this is…

Men in their 30’s would be left without a band to idolize, and be forced to worship WHAM!

Bob Geldof wouldn’t have to worry about Bono calling him every night wanting to know what it’s like being a true humanitarian.

The “God complex” would never had been invented with Bono to apply it to.

Cowboy hats would only be worn by cowboys.

There would never be someone so in love with themselves for the rest of eternity.

There would never again be someone who attempts to do so much good, but still comes across as a piece of shit:

Oh, Bono, I hope you’re proud of yourself. I hope your incessant need to be the most outspoken person in the world on issues that you know nothing about allows you to sleep well at night. When your legion of fans pays $300 a ticket to see you at the Rose Bowl this weekend, I hope they get treated to an amazing show. And by an amazing show, I mean that I hope some part of your massive stage setup, collapses on you, covering the first few rows with a little piece of Bono to take home with them. Instead, we’ll be forced to hear you make the same boring ass shit excuse for music til your larynx gives out.

Goatee Saad met with the demented general. Rumor has it that the meeting was so friendly that now there is talk of an MOU between the Future movement and the FPM, similar to the MOU with Hizbollah.

Oh joyful day!

I do not pay much attention to what is written in local papers, for the fate of my country is in no way a local affair. But I know that the worst is yet to come, and I know that I will not be kept silent. So just in case I find my freedom being taking away from me (once again), this is part of the concert I would like to enjoy in the prison I will be at (not Nancy and Haifa).

“How can we dance when our earth is turning

How do we sleep when our beds are burning”

- Midnight Oil, Beds are burning

Recently our partners in Tck tck tck produced an all-start version of Midnight Oil’s classic Beds Are Burning.
The song is part of Global Humanitarian Forum tck tck tck time for climate justice campaign and is a part of the greater “TckTckTck” project, which aims to draw attention to the urgency of the global warming crisis, by signing a “musical petition” with each download.

The song and video features around 60 musicians and celebrities from around the world. Singers included Lily Allen, Simon Le Bon from the ’80s group Duran Duran and Bob Geldof. The former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and French actress Marion Cotillard also added their voices to the cover version.

For those who are not familiar with Midnight Oil throughout its a long and distinguished career, the band became known for its driving hard-rock sound, intense live performances and political activism, particularly in aid of anti-nuclear, environmentalist and indigenous causes.

The use of the song comes not a surprise as the song echoes the urgency of real and drastic actions that are demanded of world governments in the coming Copenhagen Summit. Hopefully, the song would serve as a symphonic and global wakeup call to our world leaders to take action in Copenhagen.

Around the 27th of this month, we’ll put up a whole bunch of them at once and keep you in suspense until we return with regular daily listings, review and so forth around the middle of October. For now, Thursday’s song is #307:

The Boomtown Rats – Diamond Smiles

The link above is the original video; here’s a live take.
