Nowhere Boy, a film about John Lennon’s teenage years in Liverpool that was directed by Sam Taylor Wood, is being released in the UK on December 26th. Lennon (pictured above in a Bob Gruen photo) is portrayed in the film by Aaron Johnson. Kristin Scott Thomas plays Mimi Smith, Lennon’s aunt, who raised him. Anne-Marie Duff portrays Lennon’s mother Julia and Thomas Sangster plays Paul McCartney. The screenplay was written by Matt Greenhalgh, who also wrote the excellent 2007 feature Control, a film that told the story of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis.

Yesterday’s (December 6th’s) edition of The Sunday Times of London published a feature about Nowhere Boy’s director Sam Taylor Wood. In the article, Wood discusses the challenge of making a film about an icon like John Lennon. She said:

“It was nerve-racking and daunting, but I also went into it quite naively. I don’t think I really took on the scale of that fact until people started saying, ‘A film about John Lennon? How are you feeling about it?’ But I couldn’t start letting myself get too panicked about it, because I knew it would start to destabilize me. I knew that if I could shut that out and just focus on a coming-of-age story, rather than who he goes on to be, then I could make the film.”

You can read the full article about Sam Taylor Wood and Nowhere Boy from the December 6th edition of The Sunday Times of London by clicking here.

To watch the trailer for Nowhere Boy, click below:

While the film will be opening on December 26th in the UK, I don’t have any info about when it will premiere in America. When it does play here, though, it will probably be on the art house circuit.

On the subject of John Lennon, tomorrow marks the sad anniversary of his murder in New York City. I can’t believe that 29 years have passed since that awful Monday evening in December 1980.

On Thursday, September 10th, The Times of London ran an excerpt from You Never Give Me Your Money, an upcoming book by Peter Doggett, which detailed the reactions of those in The Beatles’ inner circle to the murder of John Lennon (pictured above in a Bob Gruen photo) on December 8, 1980. Included are the details of how Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and Lennon’s former wife Cynthia Lennon found out about Lennon’s death. It is a riveting read, and it left me feeling totally empty about what a great loss that was. The article includes a tidbit that I’d never known: just prior to Lennon’s death, New York City officials had been asked to undertake a feasibility study concerning a possible reunion concert by The Beatles in Central Park. Reading that hit me like a fist. How amazing would that have been if the concert had actually happened? And how sad that it never came to pass.

To read the article, click here.

Reading the article made me recall my own reaction to Lennon’s murder. I had gone to bed early that night with a bad headache. My parents heard the news when it came on TV that night, but decided not to wake me as I wasn’t feeling well. The next morning, I awoke early as usual to do my paper route. I delivered the New York Daily News in the morning before heading off to school. (I was a high-school freshman at the time.) I brought the bundle of newspapers in from the steps outside, where they had been dropped off. They were bound with a plastic band and had a protective piece of paper on top so that the band wouldn’t cut through the newspapers. I cut the band with a pair of scissors and removed the piece of paper. When I read the headline on the front page, you could’ve knocked me over with a feather. It read, “JOHN LENNON SLAIN HERE,” and had a photo of John and Yoko under the headline.

I remember just slumping over and staring at the headline for what seemed like an eternity. It was such a shock to find out about it in that fashion. Lennon had been a hero of mine. I was into The Beatles in a big way at the time (this was only 10 years after the band’s breakup), and I also admired Lennon for his stance on peace issues. Also, Lennon had just come back into the spotlight after spending the previous few years away from the limelight and raising his son Sean in New York City. All kinds of thoughts raced through my mind, from Sean having to grow up without a dad to the possibility of a Beatles reunion now being ended forever.

I did my paper route in a daze and then headed to school. Everyone in school that day was in shock. There was anger and tears. Even some of the faculty were visibly shaken. It was awful.

I hope that Mark David Chapman rots in prison for the rest of his life, the bastard.

Yesterday’s (Sunday, September 6th) edition of The Sunday Times of London featured material on The Beatles as well as really interesting piece that included snippets of interviews with John Lennon (pictured above top in a photo by Bob Gruen). The Lennon interviews, in particular, are a must-read for any Beatles fan. You can read that article, which was written by Ray Connolly, by clicking here.

The Times of London Web site currently has a section on The Beatles that features articles and videos. You can go to that section by clicking here.

The Beatles’ Rock Band game is being released this Wednesday, September 9th, as are the remastered CDs of The Beatles’ catalog.

Wolfgang’s Vault is a great discovery, not just for the concerts but for the interviews and all things musical.

As an example take the interview with Bob Gruen, photographer.

Photographer Bob Gruen’s images are among some of the most reproduced in rockdom: John Lennon, arms across his New York City t-shirt; Led Zeppelin posing in front of their private plane; a very cool Clash in an open-air ride, en route to their gig with the Who at Shea Stadium. And yet, Gruen says he never took those photos (nor any of the others in his gallery of thousands) with an eye on the iconic. “The New York City t-shirt picture was not planned at all,” he says. “None of them were planned.”

New Yorker Gruen never had any aspirations to make a career of rock photography. When he started in 1965, there was hardly any such thing. Taking pictures was a matter of survival for him. “I didn’t choose this as a business plan. We didn’t have those words back then,” he says. “It was more by default because I just couldn’t get up and do the nine-to-five job.”

As a young man without a plan, Gruen talked his way into the Newport Folk Festival of 1965, the first concert he attended with a camera. That it happens to have been the day Bob Dylan famously went electric was of no real consequence to him image-wise; he was really just there to hear the music. “I didn’t feel that special about it,” he says of the time. “I didn’t even have a place to exhibit the photo for almost 10 years.”

Check out Bob Gruen’s website

Bob Dylan the early years

While talking about Bob Dylan, concerts that can be found on Wolfgang’s Vault include excerpts from the Rolling Thunder tour of 1975

Wolfgangs Vault also lets you spend your money on memorabilia such as fine photographs:

Rolling Thunder concert print

Reference to the third Bob that you can find on the site is Bob Marley.

Bob Marley

3 concerts from 1978-1979 are listed on the site with some great songs. The quality of the sound on some concerts on the site can vary and in some cases sound like good old bootleg albums.

and one more example of the concert prints

Bob Marley in concert

More on music next post

http://www.flickr.com/photos/daigooliva/3022646961/

http://www.flickr.com/photos/daigooliva/3379513936/

The Heart of Saturday Night…

Rock ‘n’ roll photog Bob Gruen just released a new book called New York Dolls: Photographs featuring pics he’s been shooting of the cross-dressing glam rock band for three decades.

The book has a commentary written by legendary rock writer Legs McNeil (Punk, Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk ) and an afterword by Morrissey, who was, as a teen, the leader of the New York Dolls fan club in England, wrote a book about them in 1981, and played a huge role a few years ago in getting the Dolls to reunite and tour.

Gruen, 62, himself is a huge fan and writes that the Dolls, whom he met in 1973, “are like family to me.” Gruen marvels at the band’s far-reaching influence:

“Everyone from Joe Strummer, Gene Simmons to Bret Michaels all said they were influenced by the New York Dolls. They each found their own thing about the Dolls. Some people it was the music, some people it was the look, some people it was the attitude. The Dolls had it all.”

Here are a few pics from Gruen’s book. (Click any of them to enlarge):

I had the chance to take a walk through Bob Gruen’s “Rockers” exhibit at the Morrison Hotel Gallery on the Bowery today (next to the John Varvados store in the old CBGB space).

If you don’t know who Bob Gruen is (You Should!), here is his description from his own website:

Bob Gruen is one of the most well known and respected photographers in Rock and Roll. By the mid ’70s he was already regarded as one of the foremost documenters of the scene working with major attractions such as John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, Kiss etc., and also covering the emerging New Wave and Punk bands including The New York Dolls, Patti Smith, Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones & Blondie.

Just walking through the exhibit was a walk through Rock & Roll history from the 70’s to the present with pictures of The Clash, Sex Pistols, Blondie, Kiss, Elton John, John Lennon and so many more. If you consider yourself a fan of rock music and all the history that goes along with it, you owe it to yourself to go check this exhibit out. It is free and well worth the trip down to The Bowery.

Closed on Mondays

ADMISSION: FREE TO THE PUBLIC!

The Morrison Hotel Gallery, the world’s leading purveyor of fine art music photography, is proud to present ‘Rockers,’ the largest-ever installation by one of the most respected photographers in rock & roll, Bob Gruen. Totaling some 280 photographs, many of them never before exhibited in the United States, from John Lennon to John Lydon, Bob Dylan to Bob Marley, ‘Rockers’ opens April 24 at the Morrison’s new 313 Bowery space, former home to CBGB’s Gallery.

‘Rockers’ was originally presented in 2007 at the FAAP University Museum in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where it drew over 40,000 visitors. The Morrison has commissioned acclaimed architect Tito Ficarelli, who designed the ‘Rockers’ exhibit in Brazil, to transform the new 313 Bowery space as well.

Bob Gruen’s work has shaped the iconography of rock & roll. A native New Yorker, he served as John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s personal photographer in the 1970s, a position that would yield two of his best known, and best loved, images of John Lennon wearing a New York City t-shirt and flashing a peace sign while standing in front of the Statue of Liberty. During that time Gruen was also chief photographer for Rock Scene Magazine, where he specialized in candid, behind the scenes photo features. He toured extensively with emerging punk and new wave bands including The New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones, Patti Smith Group and Blondie, while also photographing the biggest artists of the era, including Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, KISS, Elton John and Alice Cooper. Gruen still carries a camera wherever he goes, and continues to add to a body of work that spans over forty years.
