Having lived through the last thirty years of the Cold War and having begun a serious study of Sovie

Having lived through the last thirty years of the Cold War and having begun a serious study of Soviet Russia during the last fifteen years of it, I can see the possibility that the Left in America may be adopting one of the main tactics employed against the dissidents during the Brezhnev Era: declaring those who oppose The State to be mentally ill.* A good number of these innocent people were put in the Psikhushka, the name for Soviet psychiatric hospitals [for a very good, short history of this evil practice, please click here] where they were subjected to ‘various forms of restraint, electric shocks, electromagnetic torture, radiation torture, entrapment, servitude, a range of drugs (such as narcotics, tranquilizers, and insulin) that cause long lasting side effects, and sometimes involved beatings… inhumane uses of medical procedures such as lumbar punctures’. Others were stripped of their offices and privileges and, in a sense, declared unfit for anything but manual labor. Some were sent to the Gulags.

Granted, unlike in the old USSR, the American Bolshes have been, so far, more subtle about it, but, still, it seems to be happening.

Case in point: the comments made yesterday by NPR CEO Vivian Schiller, as related by Mark Memmott, writer at the NPR blog, The Two-Way [tip of the fedora to Memeorandum][emphasis mine]:

Fired NPR news analyst Juan Williams should have kept his feeling about Muslims between himself and “his psychiatrist or his publicist,” the network’s CEO told an audience at the Atlanta Press Club earlier today.

More: There have also been hints that Delaware Senate Candidate Christine O’Donnell is mentally unfit to hold office because of the views she held in her youth. And let us not forget what Sarah Palin and Pam Geller have been subjected to.

The subtle method involves portraying the opponent as holding views so out of the mainstream of thinking, so abnormal, that people will begin to think the person targeted is ‘out there’, a ‘whack-job’, etc – all mild euphemisms for the mentally ill. It’s just like how, when I was growing up, people would describe the guy with the distorted features who walked down the street sometimes talking to himself: ‘He’s slow’. The implication is, to state it bluntly, that the person in question is retarded.

This is an insidious tactic, but not surprising as the Left lives by the code of ‘by any means necessary’.

A SIDE QUESTION ARISES: I have often written that, if you want to know what the Left is doing, see what they’re accusing the right of doing. Well, I wonder: if you want to know the mental condition of a Leftist, should you see what he’s portraying the mental condition of his opponents as?

_____________________________________
* For the record, this is a tactic that has been
practiced by every Communist regime — it is
part of the Standard Leftist Playbook, but the
Soviets were the undoubted masters of it, and
they were the first such Communist regime I
ever studied closely [the book, A Question Of
Madness, by the Medvedev twins, Roy and
Zhores [the latter of which was consigned to
one of these 'mental health' institutions], is
a must-read on the subject.

-When I hear pundits and politicians wail and lament that ‘politics has become too partisan’, I have to laugh.

First of all, politics has always been this way. It is part of the basic nature of man that he defends what he believes in, often vociferously if the issue at hand concerns something that is near and dear to his heart. Since men first gathered to form bodies politic, they have quarrelled and bickered…and often restored to violence. Those videos we see of fights breaking out in legislatures are and have been the rule throughout every civilization. What we have enjoyed here in America and the other countries of The West for the most part has been the exception — that is one of the reasons why we have been seen as a goal to be strived for. Even those who despise us, envy us for our order.

No, what these politicians and pundits who bemoan the situation today really want is a return to the days of not so long ago when Leftist thinking was in the ascendency and the Right allowed itself to be intimidated into silence. What they want is the Right to know it’s place. What they want is for a thousand Bob Michaels and Gerald Fords to bloom.

Vigorous advocacy for one’s beliefs is a healthy activity for a constitutional republic. Of course one runs the risk that some Preston Brooks will haul-off and cane some Charles Sumner, but, it seems to me, it is worth taking that risk if it means opposing ideas will get a full hearing before the Sovereignty, the people.

The Left, of course, does not want this to occur because their ideas, once exposed to the bright lights, will be rejected by the vast majority of a vigorous citizenry. So, they prattle on and spew their bromides.

-Recently, I caught a few minutes of the film Raging Bull. I saw it once all the way through some twenty-odd years ago. It may well be one of the greatest movies ever made, but it is also one of the most unwatchable.

Today I have several spam messages for your consideration, all of which I shall reply to as I try to do to every legitimate comment…

1) From IP Network camera:

Mind-boggling posting, I share the same views. I wonder why this amazing scene really does not just think similar to us along with the blog site owner

Well, well, well, IPNC, it seems you weren’t willing to shell out enough Yen to buy Rosetta Stone, eh? Keep at it IP-son. If you could coordinate the bombing of Pearl Harbor, you can master the Engwish [I'm not bitter]. BTW: You might wanna work on the happy face eyes, IYKWIMAITYD-son.

2) From weight:

i see what you did there

That’s nice…I’m happy for you…Bob Belvedere is an open book, my hefty friend. Why don’t you do something useful, like take a load off Fanny. Hey, take a load for free.

3) From avg free download:

hope and change

Don’t stop believin’, Clyde [hey, do you know little Petey?]. I must say that I’m not surprised the word ‘free’ is in your name — you Lefty, Commie Pinko, Hippie, Prius-driving, tofu sucking Bolshe bastards think everything should be ‘free’. Have another toke and don’t forget to pass the doobie on the left-hand side.

QUESTION: When did the folks at AVG drink the Kool Aid?

AN ASIDE: What is it with all these spammers not using capitals? Is this some weird manifestation of an e.e. cummings revival — man, I’m out of touch with the culture [heck, when I heard people talking about Blake Lively, I thought it meant Robert Blake was planning a comeback].

4) From FantasyXtra:

Nasty blonde slave Jessika gets siren body tied up with blue ropes…

I stumbled across your site a few days ago and remembered this post when I wrote my latest post at FantasyXtra. Being similar posts I added a trackback, hope you don’t mind….

I do mind because you didn’t have the goddamn common courtesy to send pictures of Jessika.

5) From IP network camera:

I’m grateful for you because of this excellent content material. You genuinely did make my day

Well, hey, I must say IP-son, you’re English shows much improvement, but the happy face eye thing still needs some work. Keep it up, Tojo, and I’d send you a cookie.

Join me again soon for another edition of Adventures! In! Spamland! where you can be sure that I’ll be insulting more ethnic groups for no good reason.

From Katherine Mangu-Ward, over at Reason, we learn [tip of the fedora to Instapundit]:

A bill that could wind up severly restricting interstate booze trade—thus raising prices, limiting selection, and generally making the world a dryer place, all while giving the Commerce Clause the heave-ho when it comes to trade in beer, wine, and liquor—managed to win a hearing today from the ready-to-get-outta-Dodge House Judiciary Committee. The legislation in question is the cheesily-acronymed Comprehensive Alcohol Regulatory Effectiveness (CARE) Act, which would make it easier for state alcohol wholesalers to protect their monopolies….

I know that this is just another example of typical political corruption, but, considering how absurd and upside-down everything is these days, I’m forced to wonder if this isn’t a baby step towards the government control of the liquor industry. After all, a lot of the best things that occurred in American History were booze-fueled [see: Founding Fathers, meetings in taverns of].

Listen up, Hippies: You don’t want to be messin’ with my guns, my God, my booze, or my family.

-Stacy McCain has filed a wrap-up report over at The American Spectator on the Delware GOP Senate Primary. A highlight:

DOVER, Delaware — Christine O’Donnell did not merely defeat Mike Castle in Tuesday’s Senate primary. She beat the Republican establishment, both nationally and in Delaware, and she beat a veritable army of naysayers who said she couldn’t do it.

O’Donnell also beat a vicious negative attack campaign into which her Republican opponents dumped every bit of trash they could find. Yet this had no apparent effect on the Tea Party-backed, Sarah Palin-endorsed candidate, who won with 53 percent of the vote to Castle’s 47 percent. Her little-known Democratic opponent, Chris Coons, can’t possibly hit O’Donnell than anything worse than she got from the GOP establishment. And despite all of it, she managed to be magnanimous in victory.

-Karl Rove’s temper tantrum on Hannity last night was something to behold. Stacy McCain has the video of Baby Karl before he was sent to for a Time-Out in Bill O’Reilly’s office and an interview he conducted with The Republican Cinderella Christine O’Donnell.

[From the UPDATE: I like Dave C's comment on Karl's whining: 'Noted dickhead Karl Rove didn't even wait for the first champagne cork to pop before trashing her on Sean Hannity's show'.]

-Through my sources, I was was able to obtain this picture from the Hannity greenroom:

W: ‘Laura, could you help me here – the Karlster’s all upset.
Bring his pacifier.’

-Michelle Malkin’s analysis is, per usual, right on the money:

I just finished watching Karl Rove trashing GOP Senate primary winner Christine O’Donnell. It was on Sean Hannity’s FNC show. Might as well have been Olbermann on MSNBC. The establishment Beltway strategist couldn’t even bother with an obligatory word of congratulations for O’Donnell….

Rove came across as an effete sore loser instead of the supposedly brilliant and grounded GOP strategist that he’s supposed to be. Expect more Washington Republicans to start sounding like Tea Party-bashing libs as their entrenched incumbent friends go down.

Karl Baby…

…it’s Dog Track Time.

-In the Comments Section of Stacy’s TAS article, WRTolkas has the insight of the campaign season: ‘Karl Rove, the “Dr. Frank Burns” of the Republican Party’. I post the picture: you decide…

Frank Burns: I know I’m a real asset.
Hawkeye: You’re only off by two letters

-Of course, in light of what Dan Riehl is reporting about Rove’s interference in the Delaware GOP Primary, I agree with him on what Fox News should do:

Fox Should Suspend Rove And Investigate, Cornyn Must Resign

Michelle Malkin has a very solid reaction to Karl Rove’s disgraceful behavior on Fox News tonight. That is not why Fox should suspend him and investigate. According to this report, Rove was working behind the scenes on behalf of the Castle campaign to negotiate a deal that would have led to some Delaware Tea Party groups not supporting Christine O’Donnell, while giving Mike Castle a pass.

Methinks I’ll be e-mailing Fox a question: Will you be investigating Karl Rove’s conflict of interest?

-From Jeffrey Lord, over at AmSpecBlog, we learn that Karl Baby isn’t the only one throwing tantrums:

And now, Carl Cameron of Fox News is reporting the National Republican Senatorial Committee will not be helping the official nominee of the Delaware Republican Party for the United States Senate in her Senate campaign.

So, in other words, having helped the losing incumbent Lisa Murkowski in Alaska, the losing incumbent Robert Bennett in Utah, swallowed hard at the victories of Sharron Angle in Nevada and Rand Paul in Kentucky, the NRSC will not be helping O’Donnell because she beat the pants off a liberal Establishment Republican Congressman?

If this is true, there is but one question:

Is the Republican Establishment suicidal?

I have come to the conclusion that the NRSC is a suicide pac.

-Smitty has more on the NRSC here and do take the time to read the Comments Section for some damn fine analysis and opinion from TOM readers. In one of them, reder DaveP takes on three GOP myths and smashes them. Here’s one:

1- “too conservative to win”. Something Rove and the Country Club Republicans want to lose in the static is the fact that O’Donnell didn’t just beat Castle, she skunked him: massive voter turnout, and over 7% margin. Evidently the DE Republican voters have a very different idea about how conservative they want their candidates to be than the national RNC and its paid sockpuppets do.

That’s the one myth above all of the others that gets my blood boiling. When you ask one of The Republicans Who Matter what they think about the mounting evidence disproving this fallacy, the response you get is ‘Blankout’ [that's for all you Rand fans out there].

-If Karl Rove is the Major Frank Burns [I almost typed 'Major Fred Barnes'...same thing] of the GOP, does that mean Michael Steele is Colonel Flagg?

-Though I remain, as I have always been, officially a member of the Republican Party, I now consider myself really only a member of the TEA Party.

-Everybody sing!…

Where have all the Repubs gone?
Long time asshats
When will they ever learn?
When will theyyyyy eeeeever learn?

-Not all of the TEA Party / Pro-Restoration candidates won last night, but, considering what we’re up against — a ruthless Leftist Mafia and our own Party — I’d say we did pretty damn good.

-I’m allowing myself a few moments to enjoy this before I get back to business — you should too as we all deserve to relish last night. However, as Smitty reminds us:

…The ball is in the Tea Party court. The Ruling Class, Democrat and Republican, has bankrupted the country, and must be opposed on all fronts….

The Battle Rages On…

UPDATE done between 1905 and 2033…

-I been sailing through The Ether on a ship made of RINO skin all day to aggregate the best of the commentary and analysis on last night’s voting, just for you all…

-’Scoop’ McCain was there when Christine O’Donnell got the call from NRSC head John Cornyn today in which he told her his group would be sending her the maximum allowed donation. One of the commentators on that posting, Dan, made a great point:

Thank God we had George Washington in 1776 and not Karl Rove and Charles Krauthammer or we would all be speaking with British accents right now….

Right-O.

-Over at American Power, Donald ‘Restraining Order’ Douglas is taking credit for Cur Cornyn’s change of cold heart.

-DaTechguy explains why it was Stacy alone that got the scoop on this story. Spot-on, Pete [as one brown-noser to another].

-Both Stacy and his partner in crime Smitty have been kind enough to send those of us who have been linking their coverage a RINOplasty Reach Around. Thanks much to both of you.

-Over at Si Vis Pacem, Ran shows us that he understands just who is the man behind ‘The Architect’s!’ mask:

… Rove is a Party man, first and always. Most of the public are not: The interests of Liberty are not those of Party power. In the long run, they are antithetical – and that is the very reason The Architect and his ilk in the RINO Establishment fell out of power in Washington….

-For those readers who are fans of graphic novels, Ran provides a some pictorial analysis of last night.

-Carol of Sheeple gives us the long-range weather forecast: ‘…one thing is clear, the political climate has changed’.

Yup….sunny skies for some, a blizzard for others.

-The Lonely Conservative offers some of her comments and has the video of Rush’s comments from today.

-We interrupt this Update for an announcement:

Mr. Rove, please hurry or the folks from NRO will take all the seats.’

-TLC also has a posting up about the Republican Governor’s Primary in New York where the TEA Party candidate Carl Paladino trounced Rick ‘Milquetoast’ Lazio. The nominee, it seems, is a little ‘off’, but that doesn’t bother TLC:

…I have my questions about Carl Paladino, I think he’s a bit loony. But hey, maybe crazy is just what we need right now.

We got nothing to lose at this point….yeah, I say, shake ‘em up.

-Who knew Pat Austin was a Prophetess:

Primary night got even wilder after the Delaware race was called, it seems. I shut everything down and tried to go to bed (not very successfully, I might add – UP every hour for one thing or another…) but I did see Karl Rove trashing O’Donnell on Hannity. It was, of course, a sign of things to come.

Expect the whining to get even worse [I just watched Charles Krauthammer on the Fox News All-Stars and, for the first time, I had to turn him off].

Come on, Wolverines, on 02 November, let’s get Medieval on their asses.

-Obi’s Sister asks: Can You Smell The Fear?

Yes…it smells like…the first day of Spring.

-The Ol’Broad thinks the GOP Establishment should turn the other cheek, as it were:

…The NRSC might as well kiss their sorry hind ends goodbye!…

-In the course of one of his always enjoyable rants where he puts the ‘smash’ in Smash Mouth Politics, John Doe makes these two spot-on points:

Litmus paper does not make a solution alkaline or acidic, it merely reveals such in the solution. Christine O’Donnell doesn’t make a person a RINO or a conservative, but a person’s reaction to her candidacy reveals a lot about where they really are on the political scale.

…

[Karl] Rove’s uncharacteristic rant against O’Donnell is a Toto-pulling-back-the-curtain moment. Observe closely, Dear Conservative Brethren. This is how they really feel. They know more than the great un-washed who is and who isn’t fit for governing. And you better damn well listen to them or they will throw a hissy fit and quit and take their ball home. Or join the other team.

That is the habit of the migratory RINO.

-Never one to shy-away from a fight, Mistress Red Of The Caught Corndog takes on Karl Rove, TPM, and Rachel Madcow.

-William Jacobson issues a warning:

But if the GOP is going to go the route of stunning hypocrisy and pettiness, the O’Donnell race will turn out to be the GOP’s Waterloo. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

The GOP can ride the wave or stand in its way. It’s up to them.

If the GOP attempts to stand in the way of the wave … well, you know what happens to Castles made of sand.

Ignore this, squishes, at your peril.

-In another posting, the Professor reports on the incredible flood of donations Miss O’Donnell has received today.

-Believe it or not, Stogie is optimistic [!]:

For years we Republicans have had to endure one RINO candidate after another, put up by the Republican establishment. The GOP’s promise has not been to roll back Democrat big government statism; it has been to more efficiently manage that statism. That isn’t good enough for conservatives. We want to reverse the Democrats’ incursion into the private sector, reduce taxes and the size of government. Our goal is not to slow the socialist advance, it is to stop it and reverse it.

Those who argue for support of RINO candidates are still in “limit the damage” mode. I believe that this mindset is on the wane….

I think he’s right [whoever 'Wayne' is].

-Regarding that saying by the late William F. Buckley that one should vote for the most conservative candidate who can win, Stogie, backed-up by Rush, is arguing for a variation in these most unusual of times.

-The Putting Things In The Exact Right Perspective Award goes to Pundette:

Birth Pangs

Or the chaos, mess, and apparent destruction of a kitchen renovation. Choose your metaphor. The process is ugly and therefore pleasing to the left (though some liberals are frightened and despondent), but it’s a mere by-product of a desperately-needed makeover.

And it’s going to get pretty damn ugly as time goes on and our enemies get more and more desperate.

-I’m done…I’ve got to stop. I tried to visit every Friend In The Ether’s site, but, at some point, I just had to stop and get updating. If I missed you, please leave a link in the Comment Section.

Bob's Muse

-It’s interesting to watch the Demonocrats express all of this concern lately for the deteriorating condition of our roads and bridges. Not a week goes by that you don’t see stories of chunks of concrete falling into roads or parts of highways turning into looking like they’ve been bombed. The Bolshes, of course, want to raise our taxes to pay for the needed repairs and replacements.

The fact of the matter is: they are in an awful state of neglect and we’ve got to do something about the problem because we all depend directly on our roads and bridges to get around and indirectly to get such things as food supplies delivered to our stores

What brought us to this bad situation?

In the last half of the 1980′s and for a good part of the 1990′s, states were flush with revenues thanks to booms in the economy. Where did all of the money go?

It went to fund new programs and provide services that the politicians gladly offered to administer. We ere happy to let the government take over those responsibilities that kept us from having our fun. There was plenty of tax monies available to maintain the roads and bridges, but we allowed them to be squandered on those things that the government should never touch.

So now, we’re screwed.

-We’re also being bitten in the arse — literally, by bed bugs. In the middle decades of the 20th Century the bed bug problem had been solved through the use of DDT. In our desire to only concern ourselves with luxuries, we let the environmental whackos push through bans of certain chemicals based on false and/or misleading information. Thus, we now face a bed bug epidemic.

The Lonely Conservative has more information of the bed bug problem here and also features a link to a site where you can search a ‘free, public database of user-submitted bed bug reports from across the United States and Canada’.

-Just more signs of the decline of The West.

-In light of the things Glenn Beck said at the Restoring Honor Rally and the day before to the Freedom Works Conference and the reaction of the crowds, I wonder if we are not witnessing another one of those uniquely American moments in history whereby a great religious/spiritual reawakening is beginning, one that will sweep the country and effect our culture and politics for a least a generation?

Bob's Muse

Each century has had one since the 18th.

-While I am not a big fan of the Evangelical/Revivalist way of speechifying [I was brought up Roman Catholic and believe in getting there less demonstrably through, say, quiet discussions with a priest over cigars and whiskey], I must say that I am very, very impressed and delighted to see it happening [BTW: As a Minister in The Universal Life Church, I can tell you that I have been to the moun-tain].

-Speaking of the Rally, here are some eyewitness accounts and commentary that are well-worth reading…

=Smitty filed a report from the Rally and an after-report.

=Over At The Point Of A Gun, Dave C was there and did the same here and here.

=Admiral William Teach of The Pirate’s Cove, here and here.

=Over at The Sundries Shack, Jimmie Bise has published a damn fine aggregation of folk’s accounts and offers some fine commentary.

=Though not at the Rally nor at Al Sharpton’s pale imitation race huckster gathering, Stacy filed some good city desk reports here, here, and here. A highlight from one of them:

…Sharpton’s crowd wanted a confrontation, and the Restoring Honor participants just smiled, probably thinking to themselves: “We’ve got Sarah Palin and 300,000 people.

-This coming Monday, the Barack Obama Elementary School will be opening it’s doors. It is being promoted as a green facility, very environmentally ‘friendly’.

One hopes it will also be friendly to the truth in it’s curriculum, unlike the vast majority of other public schools in the country. I’m not too confident of this after reading this from Weasel Zippers:

The curriculum will include teaching students there are 57 states, gym class will consist of playing golf only and all teachers will be required to read off a teleprompter during class…

Bob's Muse

But, there is an upside according to Andy Levy on Red Eye: [to paraphrase] the kids get a lot of vacation time!

Andy Levy figures in this next musing, as well…

-British Prime Minister David Cameron will be taking some maternity leave after the premature birth of his daughter. I was all set to criticize him for being a namby-pamby girly man for doing this, but, considering their son Ivan died last year at the age of six from complications from the cerebral palsy and severe epilepsy he suffered, I’m much more sympathetic. However, perhaps he should have stepped down from his post because he is leading a nation that is at war and is facing grave internal problems. I hope the Deputy PM is up to the job — I do not know much about Mr. Clegg.

Andy Levy observed recently [paraphrasing again] that we should keep this several week leave in perspective: Mr. Cameron is taking less time off than our Fearless Leader has.

Always look on the bright side of life, eh?

When Charlie Rangel was charged with his many violations, The Divine One stated that Representative from Harlem should ‘end his career with dignity’.

A question arises: Could Barry be, perhaps, practicing a future address to the senior citizens of this nation explaining why they will be denied life-prolonging and life-saving drugs under Obamacare?

Inquiring minds want to know.

SIDENOTE: I found this quote in a posting published by Steven Givler that I urge you to check out. It seems the Major has sources in the Intelligence Community who gave him transcripts of the exchanges between Rangel and Obama after Barry made the above remark. The back and forth is quite enlightening and entertaining.

You are building a company, things are going well, and you need continued growth, continued exciteme

You are building a company, things are going well, and you need continued growth, continued excitement in your market and prove your contemporary business model. Your biggest worry is how to scale your operation. Direct sales are risky and expensive, geographic expansion requires localization and product investment and partnerships take time to nurture and pay off.

With all of these challenges how do we build an effective sales operation to take us to the next level? This is not an uncommon problem. All technology companies face it some point during their evolution. Whether it is picking the right sales reps, serving the right markets, or selecting the right partners, you need to stay focused on your core competence and plan your opportunities. Stay away from the common pitfalls and get help from people who have successfully done it before.

The first question to ask your team; is our offering scalable? Most companies think of stability in terms of product performance and quality, though important for growth this is assumed. Your offering is scalable when messages are simple and your value proposition is easily understood. Your offering should have a straight forward implementation and should quickly integrate with larger solutions. When you have achieved this, then your offering is repeatable. When repeatable it becomes easy to train new reps, expand to new geographies and partner with companies that will integrate your product into their solutions.

It starts with messaging. Are your messages simple? Can you articulate your value proposition in a minute? Is it repeatable in targeted vertical markets? Do you have proof statements to back up your claims? It is very important to get his messaging crisp. When you go to market with a direct sales model, your good sales reps can overcome messaging problems at the point of sale, but these models don’t scale. Remember that direct sales reps sell your product many times, the customer buys only once.

If you have a configurable product that suits many purposes for many people, you will need to package and price solutions to show tangible benefits to end users. Once installed, expansion opportunities will emerge through good account management. Good messaging is the foundation of effective outbound PR. Outbound PR will gain influencer mindshare, company and product awareness and most importantly attract new selling partners. Good crisp messaging makes your offering scalable shortening direct sales cycles and jump starting the partnering process.

The scaling of your operation requires collaboration with the whole operations team. It involves listening to what is happening in sales situations, tracking your competition then projecting your core competence. This will help you choose your vertical markets, drive product development and align with solution partners. This sounds straight forward, but there is many pitfalls along the way. Staying focused requires a plan that can be executed by the entire operations team. The best operations are plan driven and process managed, allowing you to constantly measure and manage progress, make adjustments and learn from your actions.

Direct Sales: Hiring direct sales can be risky. It takes time to train and build a book of business.

Direct Sales: Hiring direct sales can be risky. It takes time to train and build a book of business. It is important to develop a sales rep profile. The profile is important, moving too far away from it will produce poor results. An empty apartment is better than a bad tenant.

When hiring executive sales management, be sure you understand how they fit into your expected profile & company culture, because more than likely, they will bring in their own team of sales people who behave similarly. By nature, sales people tend to yell the loudest. Are they Theory X take no prisoners type guys, or do they have a more collaborative style. An interview does not always show these traits & is important to understand what you are in for before you bring in a new sales team. If not, your entire organization may suffer.

Other than references, one simple way to find out more about an important hire is to bring them out for a round of golf. You would be surprised what you can learn about someone’s style in a 6 hour pressure packed round of golf!

Make sure that the sales compensation plans are aligned with company business plans. Make sure that territories are clearly defined to avoid channel conflict with other reps and selling partners. Define the sales process and assign resources based on process steps. This will encourage information sharing and opportunity qualification. All this information should be contained in a collaborative sales tracking & forecasting system that all company stake holders have access to.

Geographical Expansion: Europeans like to buy from Europeans. A successful sales group in the US may not succeed in Europe. Look for talent that has been successful selling similar products in the foreign territory. It is important that they have contacts and the ability to bring in good people. Look for expansion through American multi-national companies to get local references.

Partnering: Choosing partners can be very difficult. Analysts can be very effective at suggesting potential partners and making introductions. Ask your customers what service providers they use. Look at your competitions, who do they partner with? Partnership include, selling partners that sell with you, OEM partners who embed your solution in their offerings and technology partners which extend your solution. To gain revenue through partners you must understand how they sell and get paid. Are they vertically aligned and is your vertical alignment similar. Are you speaking with the right people, you can spend a lot of cycles chasing a marketing relationship. Follow the money, sell with your partner. Check your contacts with analysts or other influencers to see if you are speaking with the right people.

Be sure the compensation plans for your direct sales teams are in line with your channel objectives. Compensation drives behavior. Do not create compensation plans that are destructive to your channel objectives. Find a compelling reason to partner. Make sure that your joint value helps them win deals. Make sure they understand how the partnership makes them more competitive. Never get stuck in a program.

There is a lot to do, and if you can do it quickly you will beat your competition. Who is your coach? Palladin can help. Our partners have lived this problem at many companies in different roles. We can help you through the process rolling up our sleeves, working with you, sharing contacts and giving you the benefits of our experience. Why can we help, because that what we do?

The Patriots are 18-0, why? Because they play every game the entire 60 minutes. The teams that have been close and took them into the 4th quarter, lost because they couldn’t stay focused for the entire game. Why do the Patriots play 60 minutes? Experience. They have a game plan and they run to it, making minor adjustments as they see what their competitors throw at them. Business is the same, management teams have to play 60 minutes and it all starts with a good game plan. How many times do businesses panic and lose focus, away from their plan and travel down wrong paths. Your number one competitor gets bought by a gorilla, how do you react, how do you leverage it to move your message forward. Who can you get to help you get out this message and how does this affect your plan. You launch a new partnership, how will your competitors react? How will your sales force leverage the partnership and how will the market react?

All of these events are predictable and should be part of a plan, as they happen, they should be considered market validation. It is all part of the planning process. How a team reacts to these events will determine whether they will play 60 minutes or lose focus in the 4th quarter.
