For the seventh year (really!), I’ll be holding a yoga workshop on Jan. 1.

We’ll start at 10 a.m. with active yoga, then break for a walk up Salmon Creek Road (rain or shine!), and then have a lovely restorative yoga session before wrapping things up by 2 p.m.

People at all levels of practice are welcome.

The cost for the workshop is $25.

Reservations are required.

This is my absolute favorite way to start the year and I hope you’ll join me once again.

Namaste,

Suzi

p.s. You should remember to pack warm gear for the walk, walking shoes, a light snack, and water… as well as yoga stuff.

It has officially hit the 0 degree mark in Paris. And yes, I know, this sounds tropical to a lot of you in Canada right now – but considering I don’t have a proper winter jacket here, it feels like being locked in the freezer while wearing your pajamas. That being said, it has made me realize that I will probably shatter into tiny pieces once I land in Canada. Or not.

The clear choice, no pun intended, was a gin martini to ‘warm’ me up. This was actually one of the very few restaurants that knew what an actual gin martini was. Most places gave me a cocktail similar to a gin fizz whenever I’ve asked for one. And for the alcoholics people lacking arms children hell of it, mini bendy straws.

I find it incredibly frustrating when I spend a lot of time and energy into doing my hair, only to have it look like shit and put up in a bun. The cat mask was strapped to my head to make me feel like I put some stylish thought into my attire. Also, it’s not everyday you can pull off wearing a cat mask – a French Tuesday party was an exception.

So French Tuesdays – in short: exclusive worldwide parties that take place in Paris, Miami, Sao Paulo, New York and any other city that is full of people that would drool all over the word ‘exclusive’. The parties are always a blast with great DJ’s and plenty of random props that they hand out to the crowd – boas, hats, necklaces, glow sticks, $20 drinks, santa hats, pieces of paper that say ‘you lose’ or ‘wednesday sucks’, confetti…

Bottle service is huge in Paris. People also tend to make a huge mess at their tables. I want to assume that 90% of the liquid on this table is vodka. The glasses are so small that they look like shots in this picture.

Taking ’sniper’ pictures of the dance floor. I brought my camera with me so I’ll have some better shots of this night. One guy, that I assume worked at the club, kept doing all these random stunts for me. He literally jumped from the second floor, onto the scaffolding around the stage, and down onto the DJ platform. Another time, he did a twist jump over the railing. I felt like I was going to capture this mans death on camera – headlines reading ‘Woman blinds man with flash; Man dead’.

The bittersweet aftermath of another successful party. Doesn’t look so glamorous anymore – just looks like a stampede of soaking wet and confetti covered demons came flying through the club. Why do all clubs look like a run-down halfway homes once the lights turn on?

Plans for tonight will remain top secret until tomorrow. It’s nothing crazy – so don’t get your hopes up too high. Though I have a feeling Kavi will appreciate the activities taking place.

by Melissa Garcia Logan According to a survey conducted by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporatio

by Melissa Garcia Logan

According to a survey conducted by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), 43.3 percent of Hispanic households either do not have a checking or savings account or have bank accounts but still rely on non-bank money orders, check-cashing services, payday advance loan services, rent-to-own agreements, or pawn shops at least once or twice a year. Also included are tax refund anticipation loans if you have used them at least once in the past five years.

If you fall into this category, you typically do not have access to affordable credit. Your credit cards may be secured cards, if you even have one, or your interest rates may be sky-high. You don’t qualify for auto-loans or if you do, again, it is at an inflated interest rate. You may live in a high-crime area, which means your insurance premiums are higher than in other areas.

Businesses don’t make money in your area, so they close or never open to begin with. Willie’s bodega on the corner is your only option for buying diapers and milk, at the high cost of a convenience store. Your rent will be high, but the value of the property you rent will be low and your landlord may make no investment in repairs much less renovations. You stand in line to wait for everything, from cashing your check to buying food and paying your bills because you are under-served. Access to transportation and limited business competition means you don’t comparison shop–there are no alternatives to the local deli or clothing boutique or gift store, no competition to drive down prices. You’ll be nickel and dimed to death, never have an emergency savings account, and be more prone to be a victim of crime and depression.

You will be an average Latino.

Ironically, these facts all mean that you pay more to be poor than people in other demographics. You can’t secure a loan for a reliable new car, so you buy some old beater that eats away at you in repairs. You can’t save enough money for a deposit on a house, so you pay inflated rents for poorly maintained apartments that would cost less in a nicer area. You spend money to make money, often paying extra in travel expenses because you can’t live where you work. The higher cost of living in areas of low competition, where you pay for convenience, all contribute to the erosion of the average Latino’s paycheck. Think of all the fees for payday loans, check cashing–before you even get paid, a large chunk of your money is gone just to get it into your hands. It is not unusual to see interest rates on a payday loan as high as 400% or more. That’s illegal in some areas, due to usury laws, but not in enough areas.

What can we do? What can we do when companies have policies designed to maximize their profits and we don’t fit into the business plan? Take Whole Foods. Besides selling high quality, natural, organic food, one of their core values is “Caring about our communities & our environment.” They are careful, however, to choose a community they can care about. That’s why you will see Whole Foods all over Manhattan but never in the Bronx. Buried on their Real Estate page are the criteria for how they choose locations for a new retail location and besides size, the next thing they look for? A “Large number of college-educated residents.” Forget the poor brown people, they don’t need wholesome food. They can get their diapers from Willie on the corner and where they have to inspect the meat for mice droppings before they buy it.

A revolution starts on the ground level by educating the people who need help. We need to invest in education programs in our communities to teach people how to comparison shop, build and use credit, save and spend their money, and change their consumer behavior. Not just how to find a bargain or want cheap things, but how to build wealth.

We need a better focus on community development. We want to attract socially responsible businesses to the community who have a vested interest in it, who want to see their customers succeed. Maybe instead of one Citibank offering high-interest loans in the community to only a few eligible residents, we can encourage the growth of credit unions where each member has a stake in the financial development of the community and better chances of building and maintaining affordable credit options.

We also really need to take action on a political level to open the eyes of government and big business to how under-served our communities are. We’ve already seen what happens when a large demographic of low-income, historically marginalized people are herded into subprime loans. The current economic crisis is fueled by a domino effect of foreclosures, often hitting working-class Latino neighborhoods the hardest. It is in no one’s best interest to see a pattern of ignorance and predatory lending continue.

Change happens on a regulatory level and for that we need to make our voices heard. Get involved in local government, educate ourselves on the issues, and vote. Studies like the one performed by the FDIC will help highlight these pervasive problems in our communities, but the rest is up to us. No one can advocate for us better than we can.

I’ve had too much work lately to write – or even do – anything besides school stuff; at the end of the day (in the middle of the night) I fall onto bed with one ear turned to the mattress and hear my coffee-panicked heartbeat in it, loud as if amplified by a glass on a door or a stethoscope to a chest… “you take my heart and you give it to me”…(cat power) – not unlike the first of these two small deliberations on what may have been striking about particular men I’ve seen around recently.

Dec 11. This morning it was downpouring (in December!) when I went into the subway, but across from me in the car was a man and his suit hanging uncovered and totally dry from the rail above his seat. The car was half-lit, and he kept dozing as we sped under water, the suit swinging around like an impatient sitting kid’s leg. He would half-notice and put his hand out instinctively to steady it, as a driver does a passenger. And then, dozing more deeply, he began to rest his face against it, like some sort of pillow or other comfort… and it wasn’t so much that it was a vulnerable way to see a stranger, or even the sparseness of it, its flatness, but that it was his own garment and not another’s that his cheek hit, at about the middle waist button.

Dec 7. Today I paid the man at the bodega across the street with a bill. As he scooped change out of the register, he placed the bill on the scale for fruits and vegetables, silently betting its weight to fractions that don’t even show, based on the filth and stickinesses and scribbles it had accumulated; whether it seemed thinned along its creases from foldings; lost corners. And then he hovered his hand on it ever so slightly, like it was the small of a back of a date crossing the street or to taunt the scale, throw its numbers into a frenzy like a magnet might. Or else – this is the right one – over hours of standing there, he is learning to focus his body by degrees, so that by concentrating he can send only the weight from his fingertip onto the metal plate, or from up to the knuckle, to the elbow, like a choral warmup, slow apprenticeship no courtship of gravity.

(the way essay-writing makes me, unlike the second man, experience gravity)

It was one of those times where I just needed a break. My life was a whirlwind, and I was so busy that I just didn’t have the time or energy to blog. The holidays are such a busy time of year. I’ve been doing all my Christmas shopping, and spending time with friends and family. Plus on top of that work is hopping as usual. I hardly took any food pictures the last few days, but here is a peak at what I’ve been up to.

My lunch after I left you all was an odd combination that worked extremely well. I had steamed spinach topped with ham, cranberry sauce, and fat-free feta cheese. I actually loved this combination, and might try it again soon. I love cranberry with the spinach and feta, and the ham was for some protein, but went well with the combination.

On the side I had the other half of my carnival squash that I baked a little longer in the oven to make fried. What a brilliant idea because they were sweet, tender on the inside, and crispy on the outside. Just perfect if you ask me.

Dinner with friends at one of my favorite restaurants in DC, Bodega. This restaurant serves authentic Spanish Tapas, and the food is incredible. We all ordered 2 dishes each and shared everything. An outstanding meal with friends, great food, and great Sangria. I prefer white over red sangria any day.

There has been a lot of Christmas shopping and trips to the mall. There has also been a trip to the foot doctor. I’ve been so fed up with my ankle hurting that I finally made an appointment with the foot and ankle doctor. He did a sonogram of my ankle and found a lot of fluid, but nothing really bad. I just have to wear an ankle brace and stay off of it for 3-4 weeks.

I will do what the doctors orders because I really want to get back into running. For now I will rest it though.

Chris and I also watched his sister last night, and we watched Julie and Julia and made Christmas cookies. Of course we made the easy store bought Nestle Christmas cookies, and they were awesome.

Julie and Julia was INCREDIBLE!!!!! This is now my new favorite movie, and I want a copy myself. I am also very interested in getting the Julia Child cookbook. I laughed, I cried, I just LOVED this movie. I felt so many connections to the characters, and I fell in love.

My Sunday has been spent at work, and I’m just trying to get through this day. Rainy and cold out, very busy at the store, and feeling a little tired. My lunch was more of a breakfast as I had eggs with ham, zucchini and salsa, and a Light Multigrain English Muffin on the side.

I took 2 egg whites and one egg and scrambled them up with a few pieces of leftover ham. On the side I had my grilled zucchini topped with peach/pineapple salsa. And my English muffin on the side. It’s been so long since I had an English muffin. I may start buying these more often, and they only have 100 calories. AWESOME!

In Other News-I sent out my Bloggie Secret Santa gift today. It should arrive in a few days, and I can’t wait for her/him to open it up! Are you participating in the Bloggie Secret Santa Gift Exchange?
That is it for now…Hope you all had a warm and cozy weekend!!

Myself, under yet another pseudonym. Dandilion Crush (AKA King Unique) had released a track called Atlantic, which was probably the best of a number of retro-styled tracks in 2006. Seemed interesting to me, so I pinched both the name and the general retro feel. This one almost didn’t get released – it was supposed to be the third vinyl release. That would have been a shame, in my opinion.

This was really the start of me making records that I like the sound of, where I was satisfied with them on a production/engineering level. I’d really gotten used to using my modular synth and there are synthy tricks all over these tracks.

I was really being impressed by Trentmoller around the time I made this and you can hear it in At Night. This is kind of my version of his remix of Royksopp’s What Else Is There, plus the other stuff he was doing around that time. I’m still pretty happy with it after all this time.

At Night was one of the best-selling Bodega releases. I think it sold better than it would have otherwise because Shakedown’s At Night came out around that time and sold like hotcakes. Whatever. Things sell for weird reasons.

…and the full-fat version here.

The flip side, Darcade, is one of the Bodega releases I’m the most happy with. I don’t think anybody has ever liked it. Typical. I think it would have done pretty well on the world’s weirder dancefloors: KLONG-KLONG-KLONG! I won’t deny the bassline was influenced by Solid Groove’s This Is Sick.

Corbin Bleu will be the first “High School Musical” alum to hit Broadway, with the thesp stepping into the lead role of Tony-winning tuner “In the Heights” early next year.Bleu, who appeared as basketball player Chad in both “HSM” telepics as well as the 2008 “HSM” feature, will play young bodega owner Usnavi in “Heights.” His 13-week stint in the musical runs Jan. 25-April 25.

Casting has the potential to prompt a significant boost at the box office for “Heights.” Celebs with an avid fanbase (such as the youthful one generated by the “HSM” franchise) can pull in new audiences for a Main Stem production, particularly when the target demos of the show and the star overlap. “American Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino’s stint in the lead role of 2005 tuner “The Color Purple,” for instance, resulted in a major sales spike that helped extend the Broadway lifespan of “Purple.”

Storyline of “Heights,” set in a diverse neighborhood in upper Manhattan, may well appeal to Bleu’s fans and features its fair share of college-age protags grappling with the various decisions of young adulthood.

Also a recording artist, Bleu released his second solo album, “Speed of Light,” earlier this year. Bigscreen work includes “Catch That Kid” and “Free Style,” on which the thesp was also a producer, and his TV resume includes 2007 Disney telepic “Jump In!” and CW skein “The Beautiful Life.”

Among Bleu’s legit credits are Debbie Allen’s “Brothers of the Knight.”

The stars of the ultra-popular “HSM” franchise (including Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Bleu) have long seemed desirable gets for a Broadway musical since the popular thesps have already proven they can sing and dance.

The potential B.O. jolt for “Heights” couldn’t hurt. While far from dire, grosses of the show have tapered somewhat in recent months following the robust sales propelled in part by the show’s four 2008 Tony wins.

When our youngest daughter was 3 and 4 years old and wanted your undivided attention, she would put

When our youngest daughter was 3 and 4 years old and wanted your undivided attention, she would put her little hands on each side of your face and pull your face into hers, eye to eye, nose to nose… Choose to believe it or not we had one of those days with God today.

It began sometime ago when someone unknown to us donated a red motorized wheelchair to Samaritan’s Purse and they put it on the latest container. I have read the manifests for these containers on more than one occasion and frankly did not see this listed. We have had almost 20 ministries in the warehouse this week and at least half of them would have taken this. We are a first come, first serve kind of facility. If anyone had seen it and asked for it, we would not have refused it. It has been on a pallet sitting directly in front of the bay doors where every one of the above ministries loaded their vehicles. It remained there until today.

Two days ago Vivian wrote requesting a motorized wheelchair. Having read the manifests on more than one occasion I dutifully replied we did not have that particular need but would help with everything else she asked for. Cindy and I have been working at bringing order out of chaos since the containers arrived on Monday. At 9:50 this morning we started in on the next pallet and there was this red motorized wheelchair. I told Cindy someone asked for this – 20 emails and 25 phone calls ago. I would have to go back and find the email tonight. I took a couple of e-cylinders and boxes off the pallet… and this white pickup backs up to the door. We greet each other appropriately, still doesn’t click that this is the person who had made the request. She goes to the passenger side and says she has brought a friend – “ould we fit her with new crutches?” Of course we can… Vivian gently whispered, “this the one I wanted the motorized wheelchair for! She doesn’t know the LORD and I have been sharing with her how the LORD loves her.” — it was along moment before I could speak. I looked Vivian in the face and said did you pray for this after we emailed a couple of days ago. She said, “Oh yes and my friends at the orphanage too.” I took Vivian by the arm, left Patty her friend on those old beat up crutches, and said “You have a story to tell to Patty and to our praying friends and walked her the 10 feet to the shiny red wheelchair. I got another of the those unforgettable hugs, she sobbed, Cindy and I shed tears of rejoicing…. it was a GOD moment.

As Christians we serve the Only True God. We serve the Only God capable of answering His children’s prayers. There is no false god that can do what He can do. Again like Job, I can only clasp my hand over my mouth, I have nothing to say that can add to a moment like that. To speak, to try to set it up to take a photo of it is to make it unholy.

I have tears in my eyes as I write this. I can think of a hundred little things, even good things that would have kept what happened from happening. Our friend Patty, 44 y/o who got polio at age 1 and survived, got to see Jesus provide for her in a real way. A way was made where there was no way. Patty saw three people praise their LORD and Redeemer. She heard the prayers of three for her. We wait to see what will come of the Holy Spirits work of regeneration.

Of course while we did not get photos of the moment, I could not resist getting photos later. You should have heard the ladies laugh when I told Patty to be careful that the chair was safety rated for 300 pounds (she only weighs a hundred pounds because of the metal in her leg braces). The photo file tied to this post at the Smugmug blog can be accessed through this link… http://dennis51.smugmug.com/Guatemala/Vine-International-Bodega/This-is-the-Day-the-Lord-hath/10549198_Ld46p#732671871_7FsRZ There are photos of our neighbor banana project and photos of some of the ministries in Guatemala hauling valuable goods with them. They come by trucks of all sizes, cars and even cabs. It is amazing to see the work the LORD is doing in Guatemala through medical ministries.

My week of eating healthy continues– as I highlight my favorite salads from around Columbus. For my next choice…

#2- Spinach Salad from Bodega

Bodega is a restaurant/bar in the Short North on High Street. It’s got an amazing beer selection, an amazing mixed drink menu, and really delicious food. The sandwiches and pizzas are hard to pass up, but every once in a while I crave the spinach salad.

The spinach salad is probably one of the healthiest meals you’ll find on the menu. As the name implies the base of the salad is spinach. It’s topped with crispy shallots, goat cheese, mandarin orange segments, red onions and a cilantro-lime vinaigrette. I’m guilty of not being a menu-purist– I always substitute the cilantro-lime vinaigrette for the walnut champagne vinaigrette. I think the walnut champagne compliments the spinach a little better.

I think the flavor combinations in the salad are really good. The goat cheese is tangy and pairs well with the salty taste of the shallots and the sweet taste of the oranges. The red onions give it a little kick and tastes really good with the sweetness of the walnut champagne vinaigrette. And to me, this salad is actually really hearty. Some might complain that there is too much spinach on the plate, but I disagree. I think the greens are always fresh and tasty and they are sure to leave you feeling satisfied.

I always get my salad topped with grilled chicken to make it a full entree. It also comes with a side of bread if you want the extra carbs. The entree portion runs at $8 and I believe adding chicken to it will cost you $2-3 extra. This is a GREAT salad to try out if you haven’t already… and it’s healthy enough that you won’t feel guilty having a beer or a martini to go with it!

Atrévete a cambiar.

Reebok threw a kickin party to celebrate 20 years of the pump last week. While it was easy to be wooed by the towering pro athlete presence of hosts Emmitt Smith and Dominique Wilkins, as well as the open bar and mini Pop Burgers, I’m all about the Pump.

To start, one of the new limited edition Pump X styles, designed by Boston sneaker retailer, Bodega, was sold via lottery this week to keep collectors from camping out in front of the store.

Reebok, whose entire staff was decked out in new retro versions of the custom fit shoe at the party, made sure to decorate the place in 90’s Pump posters that reminded me; the pump wasn’t just a basketball shoe. It was a tennis trainer, worn by great Michael Chang. It was also a running shoe, an aerobics shoe, a football shoe, the list goes on.

And now it’s a limited edition. Here are a few of my favorite designs from it’s exclusive 20th anniversary partnerships.

These work boot style sneakers are from Saint Alfred in Chicago.

The aforementioned Outback from Bodega.

A sleek, dark color combo from Huf in San Francisco.

A few more, displayed behind glass at the party, but not including the Parisian boutique, Colette’s design, covered by our trendspotter Alli, last week.

And the definitive Michael Chang poster. Just because I love the 90’s-ness of it.

T$F linked to unwind from 2009 over last weekend. Took a couple field trips around L.A. Always too much too do and too little time.

Caught some good flicks, tons of graf everywhere. Some super sick burners in the ally behind Safety Cycle.. Ewok/Pose/Rime stunners over there— no pics of it here.

Checked out that new Gallery 66 place, pretty cool- saw that Creature Feature work and purchased a jar of Witches Brew. There’s a dope Rob One mural on the wall outside, so huge I couldn’t get a photo of the whole thing.

Dope LTS / KOG work around there too..

Stopped by 33 1/3 to get some paint too…
Great El Mac x Retna mural on the way…

Took a couple pics of the back walls, but looked unfinished..
Some MTN sale/signing was going down on Sunday- but no time to come back that spot.

Graffiti is cool, saw alot of this weekend. Burnt out on that tip, time to focus on other ventures.
Got some cold drinks at the bodega next to 33 1/3, they had some super strange “wanted-style” posters taped in the front. I love reading this crap.

STOLEN CUSTOMER’S BIKE…
POLICE’S LOOKING FOR THIS GUY!10-30-09 5 hour Energe Drink Steeler!

Already knowing of its military theme, we now see how the Boston shop is able to further express the inspiration with high quality material, army style branding along the heel, speckled sole to insinuate outdoor wear & tear, and “survival” embroidered inside the tongue. To coincide with the collaborative release, set to drop on Friday, November 20th, a shirt has been created to commemorate the event. Donning a sly fox with an eye patch and beret to follow the Pump20’s theme, the shirt will also feature Reebok Pump 20 branding on the sleeve.

If you read my previous post; last night was literally the party of sneaker century. London celebs Alice Delal, Jade Jagger (who was spinning a DJ-set with hubby Dan Williams) and Kelly Brook were living it up in celebration of Reebok’s 20th anniversary. Beautiful people, drinks and a deco of color encompassed the Reebok Lounge; and yours truly was there to witness the gorgeousness of it all.

In commemoration of Reebok’s anniversary, specialty retailers Bodega, Alife Rivington Club, Colette, Patta and Size? are releasing limited edition collabs, including a little something new for the ladies.
