My body does not fit into a lot of categories as some women’s bodies do.

I will never see it in an ad for weight loss or on a bill board in a bikini.

It is not what our culture designs clothing for, not what you’d find on a runway, or in one of those before-and-after photos at the back of a magazine for cellulite cream.

It’s not buxom, not full, not anorexic, not curvy, not what teen age girls aspire to, or plastic surgeons use in their promotional brochures.

My body is a little plain, a little innocuous, nothing really stands out or screams “hey look at this part!”

My body is not a Renoir, nor a fractured Picaso but it is definitely long, strong, and able to accommodate my needs.

It responds well to demands without complaint for the most part.

It protects my brain and offers refuge to my heart.

My body does not have too many aches and pains (which is really good on account of I got a real low threshold to pain).

My body is the warehouse that I keep all my precious stuff in;

my memories

my creativity

my comfort

my pleasure

experiences

and coffee and chocolate

I don’t always remember to feed it on time or let it rest when I should.

But it still keeps going and carrying the rest of me around to add more good stuff to it and put it through luxurious baths, exhilarating walks, exposure to warm sunshine, touch, smell, and a whole lot of nerve tickling, belly laughing, tasting, and synapse sparking adventure.

It communicates in code; goose bumps, yawns, sweat, heartbeat changes, all this stuff to let me know when I’m doing something wrong or doing something really right.

Yeah, me and my body, we’re good pals.

And even if I don’t agree with everything it tells me, I know…

My body got soul!

It’s all about what’s on the inside, eh?

This topic has never been quite clear. I’ve thought about and studied it for many years, and

This topic has never been quite clear. I’ve thought about and studied it for many years, and as close as I sometimes think I am to getting it nailed down it eludes me. That said, I’ma take another stab at it!

So we have the concept of sin. Now, to begin with, I believe that people (especially the church) have such a small view of what sin truly is. Most people believe that sin means you go out and do something that’s a sin, such as hating your neighbor, promiscuous sex, or even murder. Those are bad things to be sure, but I would call those symptoms of sin, not the sin itself. Sin, in the true sense is a big, holistic, “this is the direction of my entire life” type thing. It has to do with the general direction your life is headed. It’s the holistic decision of your life to denounce God as Lord and set yourself up as Lord of your own life. It might take detours and turn around for a bit, but overall it’s headed one direction. Much like I-4 is an east-west highway, but through Orlando it runs north-south. That is to say that individual decisions might go against the overall direction of your life.

Now, there are sort of two part to us: our body and our soul. CS Lewis said “I don’t have a soul. I am a soul, I have a body”. LOVE it! Good man you were Lewis. With this understanding we have two things that are deciding our actions in this world. If someone sins (and everybody does), in other-words, chooses to go the way of sin (again not simply one act, but the direction of the life), then they are headed to death, because only in God is life found. When the soul makes a decision to turn away from God, then the physical act is carried out by the corresponding body and we see a symptom of sin; what people generally call sin. This then sets the body on course to die as well. And this will go on until they reach their physical death. Their soul is sinful, their body is sinful, therefore the general of their life will be sinful (or away from God).

An aside: Would our physical bodies die if our soul never chose to sin? I dunno, but I heard of a program on Discovery channel one time that there is no gene for aging. There are processes in our bodies that describe how we are to be formed and grow up, but there is nothing that describes how we age, or how we go through the process of degenerating. It’s as if we weren’t meant to show sings of age, says the scientists on this program (interesting, and they don’t claim to be Christians).

Now, when someone, who has been a slave to sin, chooses Jesus as their savior, their soul is then reborn; it is no longer of the sinful nature. Now we have a conflict within the person, a war, two conflicting interests. Paul describes the struggle in him best in Romans 7:14-25.

Generally, the value sets look something like this. With a sinful nature our priorities are first to ourselves, so we get priorities something like: 1) Care about myself 2) care about things I like 3) care about people I like. With a righteous (or regenerated) nature we get priorities something like: 1) Care about God 2) Care about the people God likes (everyone) 3) Care about myself. And sometimes those priorities can be the same thing. So it’s a shift from being self-focused to being God-focused. Sometimes as a person of the sinful nature, there might come a time when you care about someone (not in your priority list) selflessly. Usually, that happens when there’s not a conflict with your priorities (ie: you don’t have to give up buying a 60″ plasma TV to go to another country to build a well). But again, sometimes you have that stretch of I-4 that goes through Orlando, and go against your nature.

With the person with the regenerated nature the problem comes when the soul wants to do something but the body disagrees. Paul said it this way:

21So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.

That’s why the Christian keeps on sinning even though they are of a righteous nature.

On Wednesday evenings I am leading a Bible study of Paul’s Corinthian letters. Recently we have been in I Corinthians chapter 15 and have been discussing the resurrection of the dead, the subject of the entire chapter. It is tempting to pull a few hopeful verses from this chapter for use in funeral services and move on just taking resurrection as a given in the Christian faith. But the Corinthians’ struggle to understand the meaning of resurrection as something very different from the immortality of the soul is very much a problem for us today.

The idea of the immortality of the soul was a very familiar idea to the Corinthians. It came to them as a basic part of Greek understanding of the world which taught that the soul and the body were separate things. The soul was good and immortal while the body was temporary and inadequate. On death the the soul was freed from the weak and temporal body to continue it’s immortal journey in the realm of the spirits. Understood correctly, it was best to accept death as a welcomed deliverance of the soul from its mortal prison. The Corinthians equated the immortality of the soul with the Gospel’s promise of the resurrection of the dead. All this sounds quite familiar to us as western society is heavily influenced by the philosophy of the Greeks.

There were, and are, however, serious incompatibilities between the Gospel and Greek philosophy that are particularly stark when it comes to the difference between immortality and resurrection. In Christian understanding death is not a part of God’s plan but has been imposed into our experience as a result of sin. Death is an enemy to be defeated. God’s plan is to deliver us from the influence of sin and its ultimate expression, death. When Jesus died His soul was not freed from an unimportant body. Rather he was experiencing in an act of love and sacrifice all the terrible destruction that our sins have imposed upon God’s plan. The resurrection of Jesus inaugerated the power of God’s plan in defeating death.

Another area that needs to be informed by the concept of the resurrection of the dead is respect for the body. While an immortal soul is delivered from bodily imprisonment in Greek thinking, the Biblical revelation teaches us that we are wonderfully made and that every part of us is loved by God and should be loved by us. We are not a soul trapped in a worthless body. We are a treasured creation that God has made, “a little lower than the angels … crowned with glory.” God’s redemptive plan includes all that we are, body, mind, soul, emotions, everything. The resurrection of the dead teaches what while our physical bodies are temporal and will “return to dust,” what lies beyond is a perfected extension of what God has already started, the redemption of our whole selves including the embodiment of all that we are.

Paul taught the Corinthians that the resurrection of the dead was a divine plan that expresses important aspects of God’s loving redemption revealed in the resurrection of Jesus. I think we need to pay attention, too.

Quero me sentir com energia, e quero emagrecer!!!

The love of the Beloved
must be unconditionally returned.

If you claim love
then your love is but a pretence.
You love the enemies of your Beloved
of body and soul
to One Love.

My Electric Picnic? So kind of you to ask. But first, a little on how I ‘do’ festivals.

My Electric Picnic? So kind of you to ask.

But first, a little on how I ‘do’ festivals. I wish I cared more about the Art element of Electric Picnic but it’s lost on me. I appreciate the sculptures, the Body & Soul area, Mindfield and the fact that the comedy tent exists – averse as I am to live comedy – but I don’t engage with that part of the festival as best I could. I began my festival-going with nowt but music to entertain me; perhaps this explains my reluctance to reduce music intake in favour of the other. Next year I’ll try harder.

Friday

Traffic, lots of. I didn’t have my heart set on seeing anyone in particular on Friday so missing one or two due to the traffic wasn’t nearly as annoying as it could have been. I missed The Temper Trap and Lykke Li. The former are returning to Ireland soon and I saw the latter last year. When I eventually made it into the arena (a moment please for the TWO ‘throw in the air’ tents I had to pitch, they were small but EASY) I was completely disoriented. I left my companions to enjoy MGMT - something I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to do - and got lost. There was no moon, no light in the sky and the powers that be forgot to scatter a few lamps about. When I finally orientated myself I forgot I wanted to see Dinosaur Jr and by then it was too late. So I ended my night in Poptopia, missing Neosupervital who I’ve always enjoyed, dancing to whatever the DJ played and planning my escape back to the hotel. Yes, I stayed in a hotel one night. Rosemary hooked me up and who am I to refuse a bed, a breakfast and the undeniable allure of indoor plumbing? So, yeah, Friday was sort of lost on me.

Saturday

Saturday began in a much improved fashion. The road to Stradbally was traffic-free and the sky above delightfully devoid of rain. I started the day with The XX who I think I might like, but live I was underwhelmed. After that was the extraordinarily pretty and amazing Marina and the Diamonds. I forsee a Florence and the Machine-like appearance in her EP future. As Ian – who took the photo below – can attest, I’m adore ‘Obsessions’ which was the highlight of the show for me. That, her look and her deadly moves.

Marina Diamond, Electric Picnic '09 © Ian Finnerty

After Marina, after the fuzzy warm festival feeling had finally made itself known in my tummy, I learned that Bat for Lashes had cancelled. Oh, Bat. It hurt. But these things happen and I saw her once this year already; it’s not enough but it’ll have to do. When Cakeface and I recovered from the hurt we went to Whitest Boy Alive. They were great, the kind of band you can’t help but move to which was precisely what we did. These are the moments that make festivals for me: losing yourself in the music without caring about the rain, the mud, the person behind you recording everything on their iphone or what precisely it is you’re dancing to.

The plan after WBA was sketchy. I wanted to catch some Explosions in the Sky, was interested in Madness and decided that I needed to get over my previous reservations about Brian Wilson and go see. Wilson was amazing. The man himself was all but stationary behind his keyboard but the people around him more than made up for it. If you ever see the making of Smile you’ll know what I’m talking about when I say that there was so much love on that stage. The band around Wilson surround him, cocoon-like, and their love for him and his music somehow makes its way into the audience. The music of the Beach Boys is in your blood and it’s not until you’re there, singing and dancing along to Good Vibrations, that you realise just how much a part of you this sunsoaked music is.

After Brian Wilson I caught ten minutes of Explosions in the Sky, who were predictably loud and epic and loud. Would’ve liked to spend more time but things got in the way and after spending fifteen minutes of my life that I’ll never get back being bored by Madness I had to return to base camp and control an illness that was not self induced in any way.

Sunday

Okkervil River day! When I finally made it out of my coffin-like tent and through the rain I caught half of Villagers‘ set. They’re really, really good. Sort of like Bright Eyes but happier, nicer and, if possible, more poetic. I was charmed. After Villagers we plodded through the mud to J. Tillman in the Body and Soul area. Tillman’s album is one of my favourites this year and I so happy to catch him, despite the rain, in such a charming setting. He didn’t seem so convinced though, and apologised for his lack of showmanship on one occasion. I can’t say I’d be so enthused if faced with a rainy stage on a windy Sunday morning either. After stopping by the LittleBigStage to see the opening two songs of the very enthusuastic Hypnotic Brass Ensemble’s set we went to Crawdaddy for Southern Comfort cocktails and OKKERVIL RIVER. Excited? Yes.

They were everything I could ask for but not all I hoped for. Going to see my favourite band play a 45 minute set was always going to be lacking something. In this case it was the songs. Though they played one of my favourite songs ‘The Plus Ones’ (sample lyric: “what’s new pussycat is you were once a lioness, they took your claws out”) and ended with ‘Unless it’s Kicks’ the set lacked something and that something was music. It wasn’t their fault; the set was far too short and they seemed plagued by technical problems. Before I knew it they were walking off stage and it was over. Though I would’ve had it another way I was not disappointed, I just need to see them headline their own show. Like, now.

After Okkervil River things were complicated. I had no desire to see Lisa Hannigan stare in constant surprise at the musicians behind her, Florence and the Machine was going to be jammed and though I like some Echo and the Bunnymen songs I wasn’t feeling the love. The solution: learning to operate Cakeface’s poi, gaining multiple bruises in the process while listening to Florence (who sounded like she was killing it, in a good sense) from afar.

The last two acts of the weekend were Royksopp and The Flaming Lips. Royksopp were fine; we danced and were happy. Some nu-rave kids behind us brought whistles, not harming them was the greatest test of my strength EVER. After Royksopp we ran to the front of the Electric Arena in order to be as close to Wayne Coyne as is humanly possible. The Flaming Lips were amazing, I left in a daze. Coyne was above me in a giant bubble at one point, there was confetti, lazers, bunny costumes…a show made for the ending of a festival. (Nialler9 has videos here) They ended with ‘Do You Realize?’, one of the most beautifully tragic songs I know. It’s the human condition to song, everything you need to know about life, love and everything in between in a song.

Leaving in a smiling daze I stumbled from Poptopia to Body & Soul where, rumour had it, Noel Gallagher was watching Amorphous Androgynous perform. Last stop was the Silent Disco where two rather insane Dutch DJs battled it out for our affection. Watching people dance silently to Iggy Pop and Bonnie Tyler simultaneously is a surreal experience.

The more festivals I go to, the different places and acts I experience the more I wonder why we do it. Then I stand under a bubble with Wayne Coyne in it, or sing about Obsessions in a field surrounded by trees adorned with recycled CDs catching every light and I remember why: festivals are deadly.

I missed (dammit):

Michael Nyman Orchestra (AGAIN!)

The Temper Trap (playing here supporting Florence and The Machine in the Olympia on 7 December)

Billy Bragg (the gods are against me and Billy being in the same room, ever)

Two Door Cinema Club (just wanted to hear this song, but failed)

Ronan Casey reading from his biography of Joe Dolan (you can take the girl out of Mullingar…)

Food:

Best: The Clonakilty Bus serving fresh rolls with delicious sausages, rashers, black and white pudding with Folláin relish: YUM

Worst: Wok ‘n’ Roll’s Thai Red Chicken Curry: meh. Some burger joint who charged €7 for a burger I threw away. Organic or not, it was crap.

In my previous post, I raised the question at one point: Why have so many Christians abandoned the social aspect of the Christian mission? I want to suggest that part of the reason is something called dualism.

In the late 19th Century, a movement arose that was called The Social Gospel movement. This movement was perceived as being all about social movements in the here and now, with no emphasis on God’s plan for eternity. People believed that it was all about “the material” and ignored “the soul.” In order to try to fix this perceived mistake, many Christians went to the opposite extreme and focused only on “the soul,” coming to believe that the material was irrelevant.

Yet, in ancient Hebrew thought, there was no distinction between the soul and the material. People were seen as a whole and meant to be loved as a whole. Remember, the world in which Jesus lived was dominated by Hebrew thought and every indication — when one looks at his teaching and life — is that he never chose to love “the soul” to the detriment of the body, nor did he ever love “the body” to the detriment of the soul. He loved the whole person.

Much of ancient Greek thinking did distinguish between the body and the soul. In fact, many of the greatest Greek philosophers believed that the soul is the only part of us that lives forever. In this way of thinking, the soul is trapped within the body and will only truly be free at the time of death.

True Christian teaching, however, teaches the resurrection of the body (See 1 Corinthians 15 to read more about this belief directly from the Bible). Jesus didn’t come just to save “the soul.” He came to save the whole person. People who believe the Bible’s teachings believe that, when we die, we will rise again; body and soul. The body will be changed, of course. All the sickness and brokenness that are part of this life will be taken away and our bodies will be perfect…but we will still be completely ourselves.

The belief that the body and soul are separate and that God only cares about one part or the other is a form of teaching called “dualism.” Thankfully, however, Christ-followers do not have to choose one or the other. In truth, if we follow Christ’s teaching and example, we don’t even have that option. We are called to love the whole person. That means telling people about what we believe to be God’s plan for eternal life in the future, but it also means loving people body and soul in the here and now.

We are not called to choose between “the social Gospel” and “the gospel of the soul” because it’s all part of the same Gospel.

Body and Soul is my favorite song right now. Several artists have recorded the tune and here is my list in order of preference: Carmen McRae – Live at Newport, Esperanza Spalding - singing in Spanish Cuerpo y Alma, and the instrumental rendition from virtuoso saxophonist John Coltrane.
Carmen is one of the greatest jazz singers of all time and Esperanza is new on the scene and surely destined for similar fame and fortune. John Coltrane was something else entirely.

John Coltrane

Like many artists who aren’t truly appreciated until they’re gone it was 40 years after his death (1967), when in 2007 the Pulitzer Prize Board awarded Coltrane a posthumous special citation, for his “masterful improvisation, supreme musicianship and iconic centrality to the history of jazz”.

Wow, that’s a mouthful, 40 or more years overdue, yet an appropriate, awesome accolade. I can’t say enough about how his music has affected me. It has become part of my psyche. I rise in the morning with the sound of his horn dancing around in my head, before I even realize that I am awake. His outpouring of harmony inspired me to write song lyrics for the first time in my life.

Coltrane’s unique brand of saxophone playing is referred to as “sheets of sound”. When I first heard the technique I asked a friend “who else is playing sax on that tune ?”. Remarkably, there was no other sax player. Only Coltrane. Man, how did he do that?!

Over the last few years I have come to learn why Trane’s music is in a class all by its self. You’ll never be bored listening to this great body of work. There’s classic jazz, smooth jazz, avant-garde, be-bop, ballads, spirituals and plenty more. John dedicated the 40 short years of his life to perfecting his craft. I’m hooked, so I’m going to finish listening to The Wise One again before I turn in. In the morning I want to hear Afro Blue, and of course Body and Soul.

The big disagreement between Plato and Aristotle had to do with the reality of “forms.” As Plato saw

The big disagreement between Plato and Aristotle had to do with the reality of “forms.” As Plato saw things, if we have actual trees growing all around us—and we do—there must be an immaterial and eternal pattern of the “tree” somewhere in a higher realm. The “idea” had to be there somewhere before trees could form—and its existence must be at least as real as that of the keyboard on which my fingers dance. Aristotle shook his head. He had major difficulty picturing this Warehouse of Eternal Forms hidden somewhere in eternity.

I side with Plato because I have no problem with eternal forms—nor, for that matter, with forms that originate in time. The keyboard is an example. So is the fork, the knife, or shoelaces. These latter day forms were surely not always present in that Warehouse of Eternity where Eternal Forms reside. Nonetheless, we all know what these objects are.

In philosophy this clash has produced the Realist and Nominalist schools. The first asserts that eternal forms are real; the second holds that forms are merely names (nomina in Latin). In the philosophical context forms can also be rendered as essences, meaning exactly what Plato meant by forms.

I side with Plato because, in struggling with this subject myself, in trying to understand it viscerally, really, from the gut, I hit upon the notion that the problem goes away if we think of these forms, ideas, essences, or archetypes not as things but as intentions. Eternal ideas don’t need a warehouse. They need a mind. This line of thought brings the products of nature and the products of humanity under a single roof. Both are the consequence of intentions. The tree embodies God’s intention, the shoelace a human’s. Seeing forms, eternal or otherwise, under the rubric of intention also nicely explains why the form is immaterial and invisible and yet may be manifested in matter. Thus the weird status of form in the Aristotelian conception, form independent of matter, namely as a potential and therefore suffering a kind of not-quite-real status, is put on more solid footing. Essences are created by minds. Until they manifest as substances, thus taking on materiality, they remain ideas. But ideas are real. They are invisible because the mental order is invisible.

Now those who’re reading this entry having comes from the last (“Bodies, Bodies, Bodies”) might wonder: Is this discussion at all related to bodies? I say yes. Thinking of essences and their manifestation may be the explanation of bodies, be they flesh-and-blood or subtle.

If we suppose that Reality itself must be God’s creation—and without that assumption all meaning disappears, hence that’s a good start—the Platonic view suggests the process of creation. It is the same on high as it is in our own humble circle. The new arises from intentions and then develops (or evolves, if you like) into a visible actuality in which the intention takes on a body. What this means is that matter itself is necessary in order to separate, to manifest, ideas—whether they originate in human or in higher minds. God’s creation generates the very matter in which divine ideas manifest. Lesser beings, like ourselves, cannot create matter but may form it.

This general idea underlies theosophical, Neoplatonic, and related conceptions of the subtle body. The idea expresses the feeling that actuality must always involve some kind of embodiment, gross or subtle. Without such embodiment, the essence remains still entirely absorbed in God. Actuality may thus be understood as separation from (but not independence of) God. The creation must then be pictured as a kind of separation in which matter plays a crucial role. The creation is not identical with God. Why God creates is the ultimately mystery. The emanationist theory suggests an overflow of benevolence—but that is, surely, just a human conceptualization. How can the Absolute be said to overflow?

This general view of the matter has certain merits. It suggests that transcending orders above us (and possibly below us) are structured like this one, but the match between our powers and the matter in those worlds is better—so that our minds can form our bodies. It suggests that angels also have a dual character. Here I side with St. Bonaventure (who believed that all creatures, not least angels, were made of form and matter) rather than with his contemporary, St. Thomas Aquinas (who held that angels had no bodies). I like the structure because it permits me to imagine that the vast physical cosmos that we see may indeed be entirely alive—that suns may be the bodies of very high beings. This notion, I hasten to add, is not original with me at all—but pleasing because, looking out at the vastness of the visible cosmos, I’m choked by the meaningless incommensurability of that vastness unless I think that so much glory may actually have meaning.

Later: Having read this she who completes me had this comment: “For me, after having re-read this ‘unpacking,’ a very satisfying (pleasingly simple?) thought is that ‘this creation strives toward completion!’ The entire universe is EVOLVING towards the completion of God’s idea of his creation.”

Set in the summer and autumn of 1938, Body and Soul: Lilbet’s Romance, a Young Adult novel is eighteen-year-old crippled Lilbet Mark’s account of the love affair between Felix Goldfarb, a recent migrant to Melbourne, and Lilbet’s twin-sister Ella.
Lilbet’s father Simon Marks, her eldest sister Julie, and all their friends are entranced by Felix Goldfarb. Never before have they come across such a winning blend of worldly sophistication and boyish charm. Only clever Lilbet suspects Felix might not be all that he seems. Also, it is imperative for her physical and psychological wellbeing that Ella remains in Adeline Terrace.

As Lilbet records the day to day events that occur in Adeline Terrace South Melbourne, she explores Australia heading towards World War 2, the intolerance once shown towards the disabled, the ambivalence she feels towards her family, and the double edged sword of love and envy.

But is Lilbet as badly done by, as she would have us believe?

Among the press clippings, the unconfirmed reports coming out of Hitler’s Germany of anti-Jewish violence, and the increasing belligerence of Germany towards her neighbours add to the growing tension for this Jewish family in Melbourne of the 1930’s.

Back Cover Notes

Adeline Terrace in Melbourne during 1938 is brought to vivid life in Body and Soul. The Marks young women, Julie, Ella and Lilbet’s lives pivot around domestic tasks in a motherless household with their dour father. But their existence is not drudgery, and the domestic is celebrated in the fascinating book. Julie is a marvellous cook, and the aromas of her meals rise off the page.

Into their lives comes the charming Alex Goldfarb, refugee from Hitler’s Germany and teller of mesmerising tales. He beguiles the extended household, but with prescience, bookish Lilbet remain sceptical.

The ambivilence Lilbet feels toward her family, her own mixed feelings toward Felix and the double-edged sword of love and envy challenge Lilbet as she struggles to mature despite her disability and the oppressive care of her older sister, Julie.

Interspersed throughout her story are Lilbet’s newspaper cuttings which provide the historical and social context, from the Spanish Civil War and the threat of much wider war, to McFarlane Burnet and the influenza virus, to Polio treatment, local theatre, holiday recipes, and much, much more in the richly detailed, evocative novel. – Pam Macintyre.

Goldie Alexander has written over sixty books for readers of all ages. Michele Gaudion’s focus now, is as Concept Visualiser. This role is evident in her exceptional interpretation of the text. The pictures are balanced between black and white charcoal and full colour glossy illustrations with exquisite borders. The story progresses frame by frame, adding visual beauty to the significant yet simple text.

Sisters Hannah and Zoe live close to a Reserve that is home to wild things, bushland, and nature in general. They find a wounded duck by the lake’s edge. They have been taught to respect and never interfere with living things in that area. But this is an exception. The duck needs medical attention.

The Vet tells them that Antonia the duck will recover but will always limp. The girls release it into the wild again after it has recovered enough to look after itself, despite that it has attached itself to Zoe, whom she believes is its mother. Zoe has been taught that wild things need to be free.

A new concern is born for the community. A Shopping Centre is planned for the area that houses the Reserve. Where will the children play? Where will the elderly stroll and sit and enjoy the environment if all this goes ahead? The whole community unites to protest against the destruction of their natural surroundings. Photographs are taken and published beside articles in the paper. This draws attention to the imminent disaster. Everyone joins the protest. They come dressed as birds and animals. They have a new way to express their concerns.

This beautifully presented book serves to bring into focus strong environmental issues directed at educating children about the need to fight to protect our natural world. Youth awareness is the key to the survival of wild birds, animals and countless other species that are under constant threat of being decimated by the destruction of their natural habitats. This book has succeeded in passing on this message
