Shoes-Thrifted Doc Martens (found these babes for $15)

I was accused of being an over-excited shoe hipster by my friend Kylie when I found these Docs. $15 at the thrift store in town. As in, jumping-up-and-down-with-excitement-squealing style geek out. I have a sordid love affair (in my mind) with everything produced by the Doc, so there was no possible way these were being passed up.

My ears are stretched to 1/2 inch, but when I first bought these earrings, they were still only at a 00ga. They were advertised as 00ga,  but when I put them in my ears, something felt a little off. Mind you, I was drunk when I first put them in, so I noticed no pain at the time. I woke up the next day and my ears were crying. Crying tears of blood. Those dirty dirty pirates who sold me the earrings seriously underestimated the damage an earring 3 sizes too big for someone’s ear can do to them. Ouch.

I am obsessed with the human body. All of my work revolves around my fascination and infatuation with flesh. There is nothing more beautiful, honest and strange than a naked body…so why not use them as a canvas? I paint on the body, draw on it, project images on it, photograph it and film it.

I started this blog back in February and it was taken until now to actually do something with it. The phrase (and name of the blog) ‘just words and so much flesh’ comes from the Nine Inch Nails song Happiness in Slavery. It has become the most succinct way of explaining the way I work. All art I create is just words and so much flesh. This blog is going to be just that… a hell of a lot of nakey body parts and a fuck load of rambling about the things I care about.

Ideally, I’ll be adding new photos every day as a challenge to myself, and hopefully without resorting to hundreds of pictures of my cats.

So here we go…

This is a as yet untitled photo from a series I just started working on projecting light and shadows onto the skin. The almost complete lack of colour and the fact the stretch marks on the skin look like they could be shadows (and are perfectly in focus) makes me more than a little happy.

Today we had a man tell us he was dumping his girlfriend because she went ahead and got her belly piercing when he wanted her to ger nipples or bust. Two things about this shocked me. The first being the extreme amount of control he attempted to assert over her. It was more than just a suggestion, it was an ultimatum. I’m not sure if he was serious about dumping her or not, but I’m positive he’ll give her shit for her decision tonight. The second thing that shocked me was that she did it anyway. Usually these girls come in and talk to the piercer for a while and call the boyfriend and promptly thank us for our time. This lady ran out of the piercing room and announced to him, “I have to be on top tonight!”

Good for her.

Despite this woman’s ability to think for herself I really worry about the women who leave. Who are they going home to? What kind of relationship is structured where one person claims control over both bodies?

The Jewish tradition says that married people are two halves of the same whole, which would give credence to the idea that decisions need to be mutual. But it’s not a compromise if one person gets their way in its entirety and the other is left apologizing for even asking. And it’s not two halves of whole if you’re just dating…it’s two halves trying to see if they make a whole…and it’s weird to me that a person would hand over their life and lifestyle choices to someone else to begin with and especially when they aren’t sure about the person’s validity as a primary character in their life.

I sometimes see monogamy in relationships as a victim to this same kind of thinking. It becomes obvious so quickly that one partner (and it’s usually the guy, but I’ve seen women be the controlling jerk too) gets to dictate what behaviors are acceptable and which are not. I don’t think it should be obvious. I think monogamy, when mutually agreed upon can be a lovely way of living the symbolism of how important your relationship is to you. But when monogamy is one person telling the other what they can and cannot do, and I see that in a lot more ways than just who they can sleep with, it becomes who they can talk to, who they can look at without having to explain themselves.

I am more sensitive to this than most people because I hate being told how to run my life. I am happy to take suggestions, and I have no problem in work environments where it is obvious to me that I should do what I’m told. But when anyone tries to tell me the kind of lifestyle choice I should be making, I get annoyed and when I was younger I would usually immediately do the opposite.

I am no longer an indignant 17 year old, but my sensitivity to the issue of control has remained. For this reason I was exclusively in open relationships for about two years. The guy I’m dating now is not into it, and frankly, I’m willing to bet on this one so I’m cool with it. But he doesn’t try to tell me what to put on my body and what not to, in fact, he has told me that he doesn’t really care for piercings– but he doesn’t give ultimatums or dump me for asserting the right to decorate my body how I see fit.

And that’s something I think should be a given.

She is not even a teenager yet.

But it appears that Will and Jada Pinket Smith have allowed their 11-year-old daughter Willow to get her tongue pierced.

The alleged new piercing was revealed when the daughter of the Hollywood power couple showed it off in a picture posted on her Instagram account.

If the piercing is real, the youngest child of Will and Jada would have had to have asked at least one of her parents for permission in order to get the body modification.

The presence or notarized consent of the parent or legal guardian is require for any one under the age of 18 in order for them to receive a piercing other than an ear piercing.

In her social networking snap, the Whip My Hair star is seen posing with her mouth open, exposing a large silver ball on her tongue.

Rebel Willow already has her hair shaved, and for the last few weeks has been dyeing it several different colours.

This isn’t the first piercing the singer has – Willow also has several in her ears, however the new addition is considered somewhat controversial for an 11-year-old.

With her jet-set lifestyle and red carpet attendances, it’s easy to forget that Willow is actually just 11.

With tattoos more in the mainstream spotlight than ever, the number of people getting new work done are skyrocketing. In such a laid back, and often hectic, atmosphere, it’s easy to lose sight of where the line of politeness lies. Whether you’re a first time customer or a long-term canvas, there are some (usually) unspoken rules of etiquette that will make everyone happy if you follow them.

Stop shopping by price. I know, that one hurt to read aloud, but let me say it again. Stop shopping by price. This also means, don’t haggle. For starters, you are permanently modifying your body. If you paid three hundred dollars for your Jordans, and eighty dollars for your highlights, now is not the time to try to haggle. Telling an artist their work isn’t worth your time – or worse, the all famous, “….but the guy down the street will do it for twenty!” – is not the beginning you want to this relationship. It’s offensive to us, and says all kinds of unpleasant things about you. (If, however, the guy down the street will do it cheaper, and you like his artwork better – by all means, go where you want to, and use the money you saved to buy the man a drink after.)

You’ve known your artist for years? You guys were in Girl Scouts and played rugby together? Great… but check your friendship at the door. This one sounds harsh, but a lot of artists have trouble here. If you’re a doctor, and you don’t give your friends free checkups, please, please, please, don’t ask your tattoo artist friend to give you free work.

It’s not a rule, but it is a fact: artists accept tips. A lot of people are foggy on the etiquette on this one, but it’s the same principle as your hair stylist or your waitstaff: we are performing a service, and everybody likes to be appreciated. Also keep in mind, if you’re in a shop where your artist isn’t an owner, they almost certainly give up a large percentage of the price they quoted you. Tipping goes a long way to make your artist feel appreciated – and it’s likely to reflect positively in your ongoing relationship.

Your time is valuable? So is your artist’s. If you have an appointment, keep it. Everybody hits traffic now and then, but a no call, no show appointment, is downright offensive. There are other things we could be doing, too.

Your love of LA Ink does not a tattoo artist make. Questions are one thing – we all know the anecdote about that poor old cat and his long-suffering curiosity. But there’s a line between interest and imposing: you trust your doctor to draw your blood, trust your artist to draw your design.

Check. Double check. Check it again. If something is wrong, say something. This should be common sense, but you’d be amazed at how often it happens: is your loved one’s name Elizabeth or Elisabeth? Did your grandmother die on the 4th of June, or the 5th? You only get one shot. Check your details before you get there, after the design is drawn, and – for posterity’s sake – one more time, before your artist gets started.

Everyone likes support. Don’t bring your whole high school graduating class. Try to limit your support team to one or two people if they aren’t getting tattooed too – more than that becomes a crowd for your artist, as well as being off-putting to walk-in business. You’ll have plenty of time to show off your new art afterwards; having an entire crowd of your friends there during the process slows down everything while everyone offers their opinions on what and where and how you’re getting it. Bottom line: it’s your skin, and you have to wear it regardless of what they think, anyway.

Be polite. Again, it seems silly, but you’d be surprised. It’s a tattoo shop, not a brothel. (Hopefully, anyway, or I’ll have to write an entirely new set of rules.) It’s in extremely bad taste to walk in the door liquored up and screaming. Every shop is different, and every artist has a different approach to the business, but remember: this is how we feed our families. 

Treat your artist well, and they’ll do the same for you in return.

Now go get tattooed. And remember, say thank you.

Tattoos are not just a form of body modifications, it’s art, a craft made with the hands of an artist.
I mean.. Look at it! A tattooist who can transfer an image from paper to skin with perfection by using “needlemachines” by hand is damn right entitled as an artist.

So now I’m deteriorating. By which I mean getting fat(ter). Smarter, closer to getting my back piece, but fat(ter). I will say this though, getting my back piece will give me an incredible confidence boost. I have wanted this for so long and my artist Helz, from Hourglass Tattoo has done an absolutely incredible job drawing it up for me. So to some degree, regardless of what my scale says in the AM I will feel so much better about myself. Amazing ho body modifications do that to/for me, no?

They become a part of me. And the best part about tattoos? They become a part of me that no one can take away or make me remove in areas where metal detectors are blocking the doorways. One more month and I can start getting my piercings back!

(It makes me giggle every time I go through the detectors at PCCF, beep, and they can’t do anything about it or figure out why. If only they had seen me back in the day when I had my ears and face all done up. Suddenly, it would all make sense).

The St. Cloud Times reports people with tattoos used to have to wait 12 months before donating blood to protect against the spread of disease caused by unlicensed tattoo artists reusing needles and ink.

But with a relatively new law in Minnesota requiring all body art technicians to be licensed, the Red Cross has lifted the waiting period.

Red Cross Minnesota’s Sue Gonsior says 1,000 additional donors are expected across the state.

The St. Cloud Times says more than 133,000 people donated blood in Minnesota last year.

Confused? Yeah, I don’t blame you.

Recently, I’ve been suffering with eczema on my scalp. I’ve always had it there, but recently, it became really sore and itchy. I was using medicated shampoo which never really did much, just made my head become itchy even more especially where there was any open cuts. Nothing was working and I was getting to the point where I just wanted to break down, cry and scratch at my head until my brain was on show, a bit graphic, I know, but that’s how much it irritated me.

The past few days, my head was in agony. Imagine getting a paper cut in between your fingers and times it by about 10, that is how much it was hurting me. I had been thinking about shaving my head but I kept ignoring the idea because I was too scared, but last night, I was in so much pain and discomfort that it took me until 2am to finally get to sleep and that is when I decided, the hair had to go.

Today, I asked Pete to come over with his clippers to come and help me out, not just because I needed something to get rid of my hair with, but I knew I was going to need ‘emotional’ support. My hair was my pride and joy so I was not looking forward to parting with it.

When all the hair was off, I got into the bath to wash off any bits of stray hair and I just stared at myself in the mirror. I was upset and pretty annoyed. I felt ugly and I was terrified of what people were going to say to me, I was expecting people to take the mic out of me and bully me about it. I hate being bullied about my eczema, so to be bullied about it causing me to loose my hair would be so much worse. I uploaded a photo of myself to Facebook, just so people could see online before they saw me in person, I thought it might ‘soften the blow’. I expected to see horrid comments and jokes about how I looked, but what I ended up reading was quite the opposite.

Just an example of some of the comments I received along side the photo. I don’t know whether you can see the comments very well, but they were really nice (if you click on the image, it will enlarge). They cheered me up, made me feel better about myself and gave me confidence about my ‘new look’.

After a couple of hours, I found myself getting used to the idea of having no hair. Of course, I was going to miss having multicoloured strands of awesomeness sticking out of my head, but I had to do what I had to do and that just happened to be removing my hair.

In the space of a few hours, I have become quite confident of how I look and I am not too scared of going outside anymore. My hair loss hasn’t changed who I am and it isn’t going to. I’m still the same crazy old me inside, just with a lot less hair!

I started off my piercing addiction when I was about 14, my first ‘extreme’ piercing was the top of my ear, I already had my lobes pierced when I was younger, I had doubles each side, once was never enough for me. I had the top of my ear pierced for a birthday present along with a brand new electric guitar, a starter one of course, nothing fancy or expensive, but it had all 6 strings and made a sound. I also made a sound when I smacked the shiny new guitar of my brand new, extremely sore ear piercing.

Moving on..

After a while, I became so in love with getting pierced that I would come home almost every week with a new piercing, mainly in my ears as I wasn’t of age to get anywhere else done. When my ears started to get pretty crowded, I was introduced to stretching. I only planned to have small ones, I didn’t like the idea of having big holes in my ear, but the more I stretched, the more I wanted to go bigger and bigger. 5 years on and I have a 20mm hole in each ear. I really don’t plan on going any bigger because I think it would look really silly on me as I have fairly small ears, but I wouldn’t hold me to it.

Along with my ear piercing fascination, I really wanted my lip pierced. My mum always said that I wasn’t allowed to have it done, but when I was 16, I was naughty and had it done anyway. I was with a friend when I had it done at the time, we both had money and we both wanted to do something ‘drastic’. We ended up daring each other to get a part of us pierced, so we did. Luckily, I didn’t get into any trouble, she on the other hand did. I felt quite guilty because it was partly my fault she had it done.

When I hit 18, I was the legal age to get a tattoo, so of course, I wanted one. I had my wrist done, just a simple tattoo that I got done as a memorial for my Dad who passed away when I was 13, but even though it was just a small piece of writing, I had found a whole new addiction, getting inked! Anyone who has had a tattoo will probably agree with me when I say it is very addictive, you wouldn’t think it, but it is. Most of my tattoos mean something to me, I have another memorial tattoo for my Dad on the same arm as my wrist tattoo, it is a picture of a rose with the lyrics ‘so lay roses around you’. I’m not going to go into detail, but the lyrics the song comes from, ‘Roses for the Dead’ by Funeral for a Friend means a lot to me and it just seemed perfect, I had actually planned the design when I was 14 and it is the one tattoo that I would have gotten no matter what. I have a half sleeve on my left arm which has different things on, I like to call it my ‘pick me up’ arm as it has lovely, bright colours, pretty images and a couple of lyrics that are there to remind me that things aren’t always that bad.

All together, I have 13 piercings, 2 stretchers and 7 tattoos, one being my half sleeve on my arm. I do not regret what I chose to do to my body and I believe I never will. I will take every single one of my beautiful modifications to my grave like a badge of honour and I will never look back on them in disgrace. I really wish people could see me for who I am and not judge me by my appearance. I have lost out on a lot of job opportunities simply as they see me for my modifications and not for who I am and what I can do. Originally, being judged and rejected put me down, but I guess, over years, it has made me stronger. I am a skilled, hard working and creative person, but because people care far too much about what’s on the outside, so many people will never experience me at my best and all I can say to that is, it is their loss, not mine.

I am who I am and I am happier than ever.
