Bodyartist, Vonetta Berry, seeks to unite Houston in support of her We Are One Exhibit
Houston bodyartist is seeking to crowd source funding for the remainder of her project.

Houston, Tx – 12/14/09 – Vonetta Berry is a Houston visual artist whose works are primarily painted the bodies of live human subjects.  She is currently working on a series, We Are One, which is an exploration into the unity of man and nature.  The exhibit will feature largescale photographic prints on display.  Vonetta has recieved an Individual Artist Fellowship from The Houston Arts Alliance in partial support of this project.  She is seeking to secure the remander of the funds through a crowdsource website, Kickstarter

The exhibit will entail the large scale photographic prints of images of models camouflaged into natural landscapes in the Houston area.  Gallery M Squared, 339 W. 19th St. in the Heights, will host the exhibition which will open February 6, 2010 and run through February 20th.

The Kickstarter website offers backers the opportunity to participate from accross the country by allowing them to pledge a backing support amount.  The rewards for each donation amount which include having plants planted in the backers name to receiving limited edition artworks.  She is even offering to a high dollar backer the opportunity to have their branding on the Faerie model of the event.  “Bodyart branding at its best,” says artist, Vonetta.  “This is an opprtunity to allow a potential sponsor to have their logo prominently displayed on a model.”

Vonetta Berry Jenkins received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and current owns and operates ABC Bodyart.  Through ABC Bodyart she and her other artists create live Art-ertainment for various corporate functions in the Houston and Dallas Area.  She began body painting shortly after college.  Her work has been featured in the Houston Press. In honor of The Pierced Consumer’s one-year anniversary, I’ve been doing some cleanup and some tinkering.

I’m excited to add the Flickr widget, which will show the latest photos from myFlickr account.  It’s not very flexible, they seem to be added as I add them.  They show up on the right, under the links and stuff.

Right now I did a series of photos from my own tattoos with my iPhone.  The iPhone is notorious for having a crappy camera, but you can do some really cool things with it regardless.  I think this set came out really fantastic! Check out my Flickr stuff here:

–I’ve also changed my header, as  you can see.  That’s my beautiful Maya Organic “Earn Your Wings” earrings which I’ll probably feature more once I can wear them, lol!

Disseminada no mundo por marinheiros e muito comum no braço de astros de rock, a tatuagem tem sua origem em cada canto do planeta, uma vez que pesquisas indicam a presença da arte de desenhar/marcar a pele nas mais diferentes culturas e épocas, incluindo os egípcios e povos indígenas.

Na cultura ocidental, durante muito tempo, a tatuagem demonstrou marginalidade e apenas aquelas que não eram tidas como pessoas de bem é que as possuíam. Isso pode estar ligado à classe que deu impulso e ajudou a espalhar a técnica pelo mundo: os marinheiros.

Mas o cenário em que vivemos atualmente nos mostra um maior aceitamento das pessoas em relação à arte. E essa é, para Alessandro Stratico Cardozo, conhecido como “Ratto” e dono da loja Ratto Tattoo Clinic, a principal mudança de pensamento de quando a tatuagem era tida como cultura marginal para os dias atuais. “Mudou-se a concepção de tatuagem. As pessoas agora enxergam os desenhos como arte”, diz Ratto.

Para ele, a evolução dos materiais e da estrutura utilizada de um estúdio contribuíram enormemente para uma maior aceitação da tattoo. Ratto ainda acredita que programas como Miami Ink contribuíram para essa nova forma de ver a arte no corpo. “Normalmente, os filhos gostam do program, os pais assistem junto e veem que há uma história por trás de cada tatuagem”, complementa.

Ele ainda afirma que a porcentagem de mulheres fazendo tatuagem é de quase 50% e, mesmo com a dor que o tatuar pode causar, elas encaram as agulhas. A diferença entre homens e mulheres está no tamanho e no tipo dos desenhos. Ele conta que os homens normalmente fazem desenhos orientais e tribais de grande porte e as mulheres desenhos menores, mais delicados, como estrelas e borboletas.

Palco do I Encontro e Exposição Londrinense de BodyArt, que reuniu tatuadores, tatuados, e admiradores de BodyArt – que inclui tatuagem, Paint Airbrush, Escarificação, Piercings, entre outras – a Ratto Tatto Clinic teve dos dias 16 a 20 de novembro, em seus corredores, uma exposição sobre o assunto.

Ratto diz que o evento foi importante e que teve uma boa freqüência, tanto no coquetel de lançamento do evento, reservado a convidados e que ocorreu no dia 14, quanto durante a semana, quando a exposição foi aberta ao público. Além de portfólios e tatuagens de famosos em exibição, o estúdio continha cartazes com informações a respeito do assunto.

De origem onomatopéica, a palavra tatto foi adaptada ao inglês pelo capitão James Cook, que escreveu em seu diário a palavra “tattow”- “tatau” -, que era o som que se fazia na época, no processo de tatuar, que utilizava agulhas feitas de ossos ou bambu.

Ratto dá alguns conselhos e faz algumas advertências àqueles que desejam ter seu corpo pintado:

-Pesquisar e ter certeza do que quer (arrependimentos, principalmente com nomes de “ex” são comuns)
-Verificar a higiene do estúdio
-Checar os trabalhos do tatuador, ver se o tipo de desenho dele é o que você procura
-Deixar muito claro ao tatuador o que você quer e como quer

Para aqueles que já passaram pelo processo dolorido, ele lembra que apenas seguindo todos os cuidados você garante uma boa recuperação sem danificar a tatuagem. Ratto adverte diabéticos e grávidas a tomarem cuidado extra ao resolverem fazer tatuagem.

BODY ART WOMAN WITH VEIL

Eines der großen Highlights der Bühnenshow am Sonntag war, neben der Präsentation der Wettbewerbsteilnehmer, die Schwarzlicht-Show.

Bei der Schwarzlicht-Show haben weltbekannte Künstler mit speziellen Farben die bei UV-Licht leuchten, fantasievolle Kreaturen und Muster auf Modelle gepainted die diese dann in einer tollen Performance präsentiert haben.

Fotografisch war es für den ein oder anderen Blitzlicht-Knipser doch eine Herausforderung, schließlich musste man ohne Blitz fotografieren. Da geht dann nur was mit manueller Einstellung und etwas drehen an den ISO-Werten.

Hier meine persönlichen Highlights:

Das war es mit meinen Beiträgen von der Maskerade 2009 in Venlo. Vielen Dank an alle Künstler, Modelle und die Organisatoren für das tolle Event!!

Und natürlich haben ich auch Making-Offs vom Sonntag der Maskerade in Venlo. Hier sogar noch einige mehr, als vom Samstag. Es war auch einfach unheimlich spannend wie sich gerade bei den Special-Effect-Projekten die Kunstwerke entwickelten.

Mein Hochachtung an alle Beteiligten für die enorme Mühe und absolut geniale Arbeit!

Neben den Making-Offs auch ein paar Bilder von der Bühnenpräsentation und anschließenden Siegerehrung.

Alle Sieger kann ich, ehrlich gesagt, gar nicht mehr nennen – Entschuldigung dafür! Abgebildet ist aber Kris Bülow, Siegerin in der Kategorie Airbrush und das Team Farbträume um Michaela Zeng, die den ersten Platz in der Kategorie “Special Effect” verteidigen konnte. Michaela Zeng wurde zudem mit dem Ehrenpreis “The Ferenc Hottya Award” ausgezeichnet.

Am 10. und 11. Oktober 2009 hat in Venlo wieder das Bodypainting-Festival Maskerade statt gefunden und war, wie eigentlich schon erwartet, ein super tolles Spektakel mit wunderbaren Paintings.

Heute meine Lieblingsbilder vom Samstag, aus dem Bereich Facepainting. Einige Making-Offs folgen noch in den nächsten Tagen, ebenso wie noch viel mehr Bilder vom Sonntag (Bodypainting):

Leider sind mir nicht von allen Paintings die Künstler und/oder Modelle bekannt. Wer da noch Tipps hat, dann sehr gerne hier kommentieren.

Wenn man mit einer der besten Bodypainterinnen Deutschlands befreundet ist, hat das auch den großen Vorteil, dass man an ein so tolles exklusives Painting kommt, wie das vor zwei Wochen mit den Modellen Njola und Inheritance. Thema war Shadowrun oder man könnte wohl auch sagen “Fantasy meets Cyberpunk”, genial umgesetzt von Michaela “Farbträume” Zeng.

Zusätzlich zum schon genialen Painting habe ich noch einen Hintergrund montiert um die Bilder noch etwas “realistischer” zu machen.

Bodypainting Pictures

Thats it…after a whole two years worth of thinking. Paper is getting a Tattoo.

Paper running over and over the advantage and disadvantage of having a tattoo has now come to an end. Decision is made and will be scheduled for the end of the year…a new year a new beginning . Now the length of time between now and then is rather long…, but mainly because Paper want to be sure of the exact design. When is comes to design.., Paper is rather sticky in this matters especially something permanent as this.

a brief history of tattoos

the word tattoo is said to has two major derivations- from the polynesian word ‘ta’ which means striking something and the tahitian word ‘tatau’ which means ‘to mark something’. the history of tattoo began over 5000 years ago and is as diverse as the people who wear them.

tattoos are created by inserting colored materials beneath the skins surface. the first tattoos probably were created by accident. someone had a small wound, and rubbed it with a hand that was dirty with soot and ashes from the fire. once the wound had healed, they saw that a mark stayed permanently.

Despite the social sciences’ growing fascination with tattooing, and the immense popularity of tattoos themselves, the practice has not left much of a historical record.

Egypt
written records, physical remains, and works of art relevant to egyptian tattoo have virtually been ignored by earlier egyptologists influenced by prevailing social attitudes toward the medium.
Today however, we know that there have been bodies recovered dating to as early XI dynasty exhibiting the art form of tattoo. In 1891, archaeologists discovered the mummified remains of amunet, a priestess of the goddess hathor, at thebes who lived some time between 2160 BC and 1994 BC. This female mummy displayed several lines and dots tattooed about her body – grouping dots and/or dashes were aligned into abstract geometric patterns. this art form was restricted to women only, and usually these women were associated with ritualistic practice. The egyptians spread the practice of tattooing throughout the world. The pyramid-building third and fourth dynasties of egypt developed international nations with crete, greece, persia, and arabia. by 2,000 BC the art of tattooing had stretched out all the way to southeast asia . the ainu (western asian nomads) then brought it with them as they moved to japan.

Japan
the earliest evidence of tattooing in japan is found in the form of clay figurines which have faces painted or engraved to represent tattoo marks. the oldest figurines of this kind have been recovered from tombs dated 3,000 BC or older, and many other such figurines have been found in tombs dating from the second and third millennia BC. These figurines served as stand-ins for living individuals who symbolically accompanied the dead on their journey into the unknown, and it is believed that the tattoo marks had religious or magical significance.
The first written record of japanese tattooing is found in a chinese dynastic history compiled in 297 AD. the japanese were interested in the art mostly for its decorative attributes, as opposed to magical ones. the horis – the japanese tattoo artists – were the undisputed masters. their use of colors, perspective, and imaginative designs gave the practice a whole new angle. the classic japanese tattoo, is a full body suit.

New Zealand
the maori of new zealand had created one of the most impressive cultures of all polynesia. their tattoo, called ‘moko’, reflected their refined artistry – using their woodcarving skills to carve skin. the full-face moko was a mark of distinction, which communicated their status, lines of descent and tribal affiliations. it recalled their wearer’s exploits in war and other great events of their life.

Indonesia
borneo is one of the few places in the world where traditional tribal tattooing is still practiced today just as it has been for thousands of years. until recently many of the inland tribes had little contact with the outside world. as a result, they have preserved many aspects of their traditional way of life, including tattooing. borneo designs have gone all around the world to form the basis of what the western people call ‘tribal’.

Ancient Greece and Rome
the greeks learnt tattooing from the persians. their woman were fascinated by the idea of tattoos as exotic beauty marks. the romans adopted tattooing from the greeks. roman writers such as virgil, seneca, and galenus reported that many slaves and criminals were tattooed. a legal inscription from ephesus indicates that during the early roman empire all slaves exported to asia were tattooed with the words ‘tax paid’. greeks and romans also used tattooing as a punishment. early in the fourth century, when constantine became roman emperor and rescinded the prohibition on christianity, he also banned tattooing on face, which was common for convicts, soldiers, and gladiators. constantine believed that the human face was a representation of the image of god and should not be disfigured or defiled.

The Celts
were a tribal people who moved across western europe in times around 1200 and 700 B.C. they reached the british Isles around 400 B.C. and most of what has survived from their culture is in the areas now known as ireland, wales and scotland. celtic culture was full of body art. permanent body painting was done with woad, which left a blue design on the skin. spirals are very common, and they can be single, doubled or tripled. knotwork is probably the most recognized form of celtic art, with lines forming complex braids which then weave across themselves. these symbolise the connection of all life. step or key patterns, like those found in early labyrinth designs, are seen both in simple borders and full complex mazes. much in the way that labyrinths are walked, these designs are symbolic of the various paths that life’s journey can take.

Central and South America
in peru, tattooed inca mummies dating to the 11th century have been found. 16th century spanish accounts of mayan tattooing in mexico and central america reveal tattoos to be a sign of courage. when cortez and his conquistadors arrived on the coast of mexico in 1519 they were horrified to discover that the natives not only worshipped devils in the form of statues and idols, but had somehow managed to imprint indelible images of these idols on their skin. the spaniards, who had never heard of tattooing, recognized it at once as the work of satan. the sixteenth century spanish historians who chronicled the adventures of cortez and his conquistadors reported that tattooing was widely practiced by the natives of central america.

Middle-East
during the time of the old testament, much of the pagan world was practicing the art of tattooing as a means of deity worship. A passage in leviticus reads: ‘ye shall not make any cuttings on your flesh for the dead nor print any marks upon you’. (19:28) this has been cited as biblical authority to support the church’s position. biblical scholar m.w. thomson suggests, however, that moses favored tattoos. moses introduced tattoos as a way to commemorate the deliverance of the jews from slavery in egypt.
