Maximizing Muscular Contractions And Strength

By John Simms- Master Fitness Trainer and Therapist

In this article I’m going to go over several different ways on how one can increase their muscular strength and lean body mass without the use of androgenic-anabolic steroids or other performance enhancement drugs. However, in order to achieve such goals for the most part I’m going to address how to maximize muscular contractions. Down below in no particular order is a list of ways to help do just that and etc.

1). Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water, but not too much water as it can cause water intoxication.

2). Have a proper electrolyte balance in your body such as sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium.

3). Take a quality multi vitamin and/or take additional vitamin and mineral supplement such as zinc, selenium, vitamin e and etc.

4). Take a quality creatine supplement.

5). Take a quality choline supplement for proper brain and nerve function.

6). Take aspirin or white willow bark to help increase blood circulation in the entire body.

7). Perform your exercises explosively especially during the concentric “positive” muscular contraction, but don’t sacrifice proper form over injury.

8). Perform heavy controlled negatives focusing on the eccentric muscular contraction using up to 30% more than your 1RM in a power rack. – Use sparingly.

9). Perform isometric or static exercises such as flexing your muscles hard in a mirror and/or perform heavy support holds in a power rack as old time bodybuilder and strongman Chuck Sipes once did. Heavy supports could be used once a weak and go as heavy as your want and use progressive resistance and/or use sparingly and with other advanced techniques.

10). Perform heavy ¼ and ½ repetitions at least once a weak to help strengthen tendons and ligaments using weights heavy than you are accustomed to. You can use this with your full range rep compound movement exercises such as squats, deadlifts, bench presses, shoulder presses and etc. Just remember to progress and cycle the weights lifted as with any other workout regimen.

11). Do 3-5 total sets using 1-8 rep range in a work out session. However, use focus your reps within the 3-6 rep range as this helps reduce lactic acid build up and increase muscular strength.

12). Rest at least 3 minutes in between sets.

13). Increase your flexibility with proper stretching, but make sure you do so right after you work out sense stretching can temporarily reduce strength during a work out. – Never stretch a cold muscle, always warm up properly to increase body temperature.

14). Stretch a weaker muscle “to relax it” in order to allow the stronger primary muscles to contract better. For example: stretching the rotator cuff muscles before a heavy bench press attempt. Doing this helps the pectoral muscles contract more effectively.

15). Myofascial Release technique to a given body part to help increase muscle function, flexibility and even nerve function through a competent chiropractor, physical therapist, exercise physiologists, massage therapist and etc.

16). Electro Muscle Stimulation for a given muscle group to help fire as many muscle fibers as possible. Go to a competent physical therapist, exercise physiologist, chiropractor and etc.

17). Therapeutic Ultrasound to help relieve muscle pain and break up adhesions within a given muscle group. Go to a competent doctor, physical therapist, chiropractor, exercise physiologist and etc.

18). Massage Therapy that helps break up adhesions and scar tissue in the given muscle group that primarily focuses on the petrissage and friction strokes as it helps the muscle to function properly. Another massage technique that could possibly be used to help increase performance before a workout or sporting event is the use of tapotement. Go to a competent massage therapist preferably one that knows sports or medical massage.

19). Get a neck and spinal manipulation adjustment done on you to help align the nerve of the vertebrae. Go to a competent chiropractor or an osteopath physician.

20). Get a postural assessment performed on you to see if there’s any muscular imbalances, flexibility or deviation issues. Go to a competent physical therapist, chiropractor, massage therapist preferably one that specializes in sports or medical massage, exercise physiologist and etc.

21). Neuromuscular Therapy to restore proper muscle and nerve function by eliminating stress and trigger points. Go to a competent massage therapist that may special in sports and medical massage, exercise physiologist, chiropractor and etc.

22). Use Aspirin or its herbal alternative White Willow Bark to help increase blood circulation. Garlic can also be used to help with increased blood circulation and is said to even help increase testosterone levels while suppressing cortisol levels.

23). Use Plyometric Training as well as using chains and bands sparingly.

24). Naturally increase testosterone and growth hormone levels through proper training, nutrition, supplementation and etc.

25). Avoid neuro fatigue. Hardly ever train to muscle failure.

26). Get adequate sleep and rest.

27). Live a healthy lifestyle. Avoid recreational drugs, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and etc.

28). Cycle your training. Use different weight poundage and percentages of 1RM.

29). Mimic the sports movement and strengthen all of it muscles that make up that movement.

30.) Strengthen the weaker secondarily and stabilization muscles than just focusing on the primary muscle group used for that particular exercise movement.

30). The use of stimulants such as caffeine before a workout or sporting event. Use sparingly and appropriately do to health, bodyfat composition and possible governing sport’s regulation issues.

31). Rehabilitate or strengthen an injured or traumatized area on the body.

32). Mental visualization, arousing or psyching oneself out before or during a lifting or sporting event.

33). Decompressing the Vertebrae: You could do this yourself by lying back on a fitness ball or foam tube for several minutes a day or before a workout or maximal lift. You may also perform the cat stretch exercise and even lose some weight if you need to.

34). Temporarily perform and focus only on the Olympic Lifts such as the Clean and Jerk or the Clean and Press for explosive and functional strength. Olympic Lifts could be incorporated into your normal weight training routine, but your other sets and exercises must be drastically limited.

35). Other potential enhancers may include training aids such as using special suits, wraps, shoes, smelling inhalants as well as using other forms of alternative therapies or modalities such as acupuncture and etc.

Well there you have it. All sorts of ways to help increase muscle contraction and strength. And for those who are seeking a drug free way to increase muscle mass, make sure you utilize what is said in this article as it helps with that as well. Good luck to you all.

Getting Stronger One Pound At A Time

By John Simms “Master Fitness Trainer and Therapist

If you’ve been around bodybuilding scene for awhile; you’ve probably heard about the Milo story. For those of you who haven’t, Milo was this guy who carried a calf everyday until it became a full grown bull. Basically it demonstrates the progressive resistance principle in weight training. Unfortunately many of us weight trainers try to increase our weight poundage in our lifts to soon. As a result, there are a lot of injuries do to the urge of piling on the iron. Not only can one injure themselves by increasing the weight poundage too fast and too soon, but also could suffer from neuro fatigue in which you could become weaker instead of stronger despite your very best efforts. Another interesting finding is that many veteran weight trainers are stuck at a certain weight poundage forever it seems in a given exercise movement. Thus, inhibiting further muscular strength and development. So how are we going to increase muscular strength with virtually little or no effort each and every week throughout the entire year? In regards to the actual weights in the basic gym setting, the weights only go as low as 2 ½ lbs for free weights are concerned. However, 2 ½ lbs is too much weight as you have to put another 2 ½ lbs on the other side of the bar to even things out totaling 5 lbs. So what’s the solution? It’s very simple. Just buy and use some washers totaling up to 4 lbs worth. Each and every week just add 1lb of washers onto the bar and so on. The washers themselves can be taped or tied onto a bar, cables or machines. I know this sounds very basic, but it never seems to fail when it comes down to adding more weight onto the bar. Is this progress slow? Yes, however it will allow you to progress gradually and without the risks of possible injury and neuro fatigue. In fact this approach is even excellent for rehabbing an existing injury.

Before starting this program or any other one for that matter; I always tell people to take a week off from weight training especially if they may have been overtraining.

If someone wants to increase their bench press; I’ll first find out what their 1RM is and then from week to week have them only do reps within the 1-6 rep ranges with strong emphasis in the 3-5 rep ranges. Under no circumstances will someone ever train to muscle failure and only perform reps that are 1-3 reps before muscle failure. And remember to only add 1 pound of washers per week onto the bar and so on.

Don’t be too surprised to see your bench press increase 10 lbs in ten weeks with this program alone considering that it’s not that fancy or require additional advanced techniques such as plyometrics, using chains, bands, tubing and etc. Feel free to cycle it with your other training and always know your weaknesses and make them stronger.

If you want to achieve success in body-building there are a few tactics you need to develop. You should not assume that simply because you go to the gymnasium you’re going to be successful in achieving your goal. You should not only develop a proper coaching program but you want to completely change your way of life too. If you don’t change your way of life you will not be in a position to achieve your goal in body-building. If your way of life included a large amount of parting and consuming alcoholic drinks you actually need to avoid drinking. This is because alcohol contains masses of calories which have no use to the body since they lack any nutritive price. If you drink a lot of lager you will only end up increasing your blubber.
Below are some tips that will help you succeed in muscle building ;
From the word go you should clearly identify what you want as your goal. If you do not know what you want or if you do not set clear goals as to why you took body-building in the first place you will not be able to achieve success in this sport. If you do not stay targeted you will not be in a position to achieve your goal. Focus is crucial if you dismal to succeed in anything in this life.

2. Stay incentivized
if you’d like to be successful in bodybuilding it is also very important that you stay incentivized. Your genes play a particularly giant role as far as your muscle building progress is anxious and if you lack the correct genes it’ll take quite sometime before your body starts transforming the way that you desire. Each time you wake up you need to make a point of taking a look at it so that you strive to look just like the model in that picture. 3. Ensure you Are Hydrates Always
As a bodybuilder it is important that you stay hydrated always. Your body consists seventy percent of water and that’s the more reason why you should ensure that you never get dehydrated. After undertaking serious training the body usually loses lots of water and so you need to make sure that you recover back some of the lost water by taking about six glasses or more of water daily.

4. This is one factor that many weightlifters neglect thinking that it’s not very important. Resting is of equal importance as training intensely because if you don’t get proper rest you will not be ready to achieve muscle expansion.

There might be body building myths out there that are ruining your chances of maximumizing your work

There might be body building myths out there that are ruining your chances of maximumizing your workouts and, in some cases, even causing you harm, whether you are totally new to bodybuilding or a self proclaimed pro. You will find yourself achieving more successful results if you allow yourself to challenge some of your ideas and beliefs about bodybuilding, as well as keeping an open mind. Ok, so what are those Bodybuilding myths exactly?

People who do small workouts, will not see the results they desire. Not only do they not have a clue about getting the results that they want, but they are constantly watching people who are equally clueless. Bodybuilding results are based on a regiment that have been tested to achieve results. Scientific concepts will not cease while other topics might change over a period of time. This will be discussed at length, later.

This is the way you should consider bodybuilding. Don’t just rely on what we tell you here. You should also go out and find more information on your own from reputable sources rather than hearsay or opinions of non-experts. You can recognize body building myths when thry come up only once you understand the science behind it.

That being said, here are of some of the myths of bodybuilding that are often circulated. Some may feel that higher repetitions linked with light weights leads to better results, as opposed to heavy lifting and few repetitions. This is the wrong view to take. This is pure science: you need to give a muscle proper stimulus in order for it to grow, which means you need to provide a little shock to the system. This happens when you do less reps of heavier weights.

Another fallacy is that if you want to see results, you should only work one part of your body. The two problems with this are that you will feel off and look imbalanced if you don’t work out your whole body equally, and that you always need to give your body at least a day off between workouts so your muscles can recover. When you work out, you’re actually injuring your muscles. They are working so it’s not all bad. The time that you’d been used your muscles and it hurts , it simply means that your muscled had rejuvenate and your body noticed that you need your muscles.

Getting enough sleep is critical to your health and wellbeing, regardless of your bodybuilding routine. Sleep is most important to bodybuilding, and maintaining a healty life. Without enough sleep, your body can’t rebuild muscle since sleep is when this occurs. As a consequence, you will simply be hurting yourself as time passes.

Bodybuilding myths are prelevent including avoiding other bodybuilding myths.

The body can be shaped like a piece of clay though genetics still play a major part in its outcome. Unless you have experienced the ability to chisel muscle into a masterpiece, you have no idea the thrill, the pride, the fulfillment one can feel to look into the mirror and see the actual formation of the human body sans fat. But how narcissistic this sport can be!

Being a former amateur bodybuilder, I have seen the worship of the human body. Though I shared, too, in the enjoyment of this sport, I couldn’t quite bring myself to the point of self-adoration. In other words, I could not worship the creature itself. I had to find my Creator in this beauty. Obviously, if He had created the body, it was art—a beauty to behold. As a result, I found myself admiring the Creator, for what a fine job He did: to have created the human body to be like putty! How amazing! When I stumbled onto Psalm 139: 13-16, these verses became my mantra during the sacrificial times of dieting for a competition.

Thus began my transformation. I had found the scripture verses and memorized them to replace the taunting thoughts of food. In unison, I joined the Psalmist David in praising God. He had “made me in an amazing and wonderful way” (Psalm 139:14). Indeed, what He had done was “wonderful”. Through the love of the Creator’s work, I found my way to worship that involved my entire being. My body worshipped its Creator, connecting with its Maker in a unique way. I felt Him in me, in my blood as I contracted each muscle: “for in Him [I] live and move and have [my] being” (Acts 17: 28). I was alive! Aware! That I was His “masterpiece” (Ephesians 2: 10).

Well today was the first day i did not have to wake at the crack of dawn to train anyone. i have to admit it feels pretty wierd. so i figured i would have a day of total relax. dog walk? check. started getting ready for a few photoshoots in the next 6-8 weeks, so i hopped on the bike trainer with a copy of Tom Robbins’ “Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates” mmm hmm. rode for a good 25 min pre breakfast while sippin on some glutamine and bcaas. google it. im here to blog not describe….. after feeling the summer temp outside, my mind was racing to find something to do that didnt involve three layers of clothes. as always, the first thought wasto mountain bike… but i went yesterday and frankly legs were very fatigued. scratch that. cut the grass? im sure that can wait. So i figured id have a recuperative day. eat clean, clean the kitchen, read the social media bible and look where that took me …. blogging for the first time. if only i could type faster/better. Fueled by my wifes overly strong coffee, (i prefer the low acid weak morning brew) i watch these letters appear from taps of my shaky fingers. i suppose i am being productive and motivating myself to grow my business through an outreach into cyberspace, but chances are most of you know id much rather work with people than spend my day behind a computer screen. well this coffee is kickin in so i wanna go work out, i guess ill end up pushing the mower all around the yard for the next hour….

If you’d like to succeed in weightlifting there are some strategies you need to develop. You shouldn’t say that simply because you go to the gymnasium you’re going to achieve success in achieving your goal. You shouldn’t only develop a proper coaching program but you want to fully change your lifestyle as well . If you do not change your way of life you won’t be ready to achieve your goal in weightlifting. If your lifestyle included lots of parting and consuming alcoholic drinks you actually need to avoid drinking. If you drink plenty of beer you will only finish up increasing your fat.
Below are some pointers which will help you achieve success in iron pumping ;

one. Always Stay focused
From the word go you must clearly identify what you want as your goal. If you don’t know what you want or if you don’t set clear goals as to why you took bodybuilding in the first place you won’t be in a position to succeed in this sport. Focus is vital if you wan to be successful in anything in this life.
two. Stay Motivated
Without proper inducement you won’t be in a position to succeed in bodybuilding since you will lack the mental drive needed to achieve success in this sport. Sometime it is extremely tough to achieve muscles growth particularly if you aren’t genetically presented. If you are having difficulty staying galvanized you must take a picture of someone who has succeeded in bodybuilding and hang it on your wall. Everytime you wake up you should make a point of having a look at it so you struggle to look like the model in that picture.

Make sure you Are Hydrates Always
As a weightlifter it is important that you stay hydrated always. Your body consists 70% of water and that’s the more reason why you should make sure that you never get dehydrated.
4. This is one factor that many weightlifters neglect thinking that it is not vital. Resting is of equal importance as coaching intensely because if you don’t get proper rest you won’t be able to achieve muscle expansion.

Our bodies are temples of His grace and it is my job to ensure that I keep my temple clean and strong.

This weekend I have decided to get back into a muscle-building mode and put back on some meat.

AR State--2006

In July of 2006, I was a lightweight competitive bodybuilder. Then, my husband and I found out that we were expecting a sweet addition to out already large brood. Long story, short, the next two years paid a great toll on my body as I battled health issues during the pregnancy and beyond.

My workouts were hit-and-miss at best and completely non-existent at their worst. However, through that period of my life, I knew that if I listened to my body and resisted the urge to push it beyond its abilities at that time, that my body would recover more quickly and more thoroughly, and when it was healed my mind would be waiting with great anticipation.

AR State-2006

The waiting paid off and I was able to get back to training in the summer of 2008. When I got back into the swing of things, though, I was hit with the hard reality that I had to start from scratch. Let me just say that did not make me happy. I was well, I was healed, I was 20 pounds lighter than before, and I was down-right weak.

Because I knew what had to be done to get back into a healthy fitness habit, I just put my head down and got to work.

AR State-2006

I’m not telling you that it was fun, though. I’m not one to blow smoke. It was hard and I was out of practice at pushing myself. There were days when I just couldn’t seem to get motivated enough to get my workouts done. Other days I would allow just about anything to distract me from taking care of my temple.

But let me tell you this: the more workouts I made time for, the easier was to fit future workouts into my schedule. So many can attest to this truth. We can find time to so just about anything we want to do, but unless we find joy in working out it’s not going to be high on our priority lists.

AR State-2006

What kind of exercises do you enjoy doing? I love to weight train. I just realized over the weekend that I still get a thrill from running. I enjoy yoga, but rarely get to class and don’t enjoy it alone in my home (which is odd for me because I tend to be a loner when I exercise). I love to ride bikes like Lance and punch a heavy bag like Rocky, but those are not to-to favorites when I’m energized and ready to work. For me, it’s all about clanking weight plates and dumbbells around, dripping in sweat and forming the tell-tale signs of a weight trainer on the calloused palms of my hands (even through gloves). My go-to workouts revolve around the weight room floor.

So, here I am now…three years later. Through functional training and working to get into cardiovascular as well as strength shape, this is how far I’ve come. I’m not including any of the “in between” pics of how big I got with my third pregnancy, or how tiny I shrunk down to during the subsequent illness, but sufficed to say, I am happy that my body is responding to some weight gain. I feel more like “me.”

I believe that everything happens for a reason, and it’s how we respond to tragedy, loss, illness, and even bounty that shape us and teach us. Friends, let me tell you, I’ve learned a lot! And I am thankful for every lesson. Now, I think it’s time to hit the gym!!!

Today, I’m working upper body. Last night’s 10×10 squats were killer fun. Tonight, because we have a holiday looming and workouts will surely be hit-or-miss while travelling, I’m going to do an extended, seriously brutal workout…a series of 10×10’s. BEWARE!

10×10 Incline dumbbell press

10×10 Chin-ups (modify if you need to)

10×10 Incline bicep curls

10×10 Overhead Tricep Extensions

Here’s where I stand today, November 2009:

I know…I know…this is as dark as my skin gets…just call me Casper the friendly Gym Girl!!!

Horny goat weed is one of the most popular supplements in the world today to increase libido and for

Horny goat weed is one of the most popular supplements in the world today to increase libido and for overall sexual wellness in both men and women. But, does Horny Goat Weed live up to its name.

Horny goat weed according to legend, got its name from a Chinese goat feeder thousands of years ago, when he fed it to his herd sexual activity increased dramatically!Although popular today in the west, Horny Goat Weed has been used as part of Chinese medicine for over a thousand years, as a general tonic and treatment for low libido and erectile dysfunction.
Horny Goat Weed also known as Epimedium, Yin Yang Huo, Inyokaku, Xian ling pi, Barrenwort, a medicinal plant used in traditional Chinese medicine, increases blood flow, dilates blood vessels, and fights against infections too. These effects can be useful for those who are suffering from heart problems or bronchitis but the plant helps sexual functions too, according to its properties. Although we can hear more and more about epimediums contribution on increased testosterone level and muscular volume, there are no scientific researches yet to prove this.

The Viagra pill is really good at dilating blood vessels in the genital area to give you harder erections from the increased blood flow that is possible. However, it doesn’t increase your libido or sexual desire. What’s less impressive is that it has a lot of harmful known side effects such as headache, flushes, nasal congestion, nausea, high blood pressure, irregular heart beats, visual problems, and chest pain (it was originally made for low blood pressure problems).Epimedium works by increasing the levels of nitric oxide, which helps relax the smooth muscles of the genital area – this improves blood flow into the penis or clitoral areas enhancing sexual pleasure and performance. It also helps men increase their stamina and last longer during sex. In other words it also reduces premature ejaculation. One prominent flavonoid is icariin, which is a cGMP-specific PDE5 inhibitor which makes Horny Goat Weed able to perform functions that synthetic prescription drugs do.

During sexual excitation the erection is mediated by nitric oxide released from nerves close to the blood vessels of the penis. Relaxation of these blood vessels causes blood to pool producing an erection and nitric oxide secretion is vital for this – Horny Goat Weed helps realize nitric oxide and this is a critical factor in getting an erection – not enough nitric oxide no erection – Period.Nitric oxide is absolutely vital to the erection process – if you don’t get enough of it you simply won’t get an erection.

The erection process begins with mental impulses and stimulation in the brain and nerves then cause the release of nitric oxide in response to these impulses, they cause. Nitric oxide to be realized and in response the muscles of the penis to relax allowing blood to flow into of the penis causing an erection.
You can take prescription drugs such as Viagra, to enable you to get an erection – but there can be dangerous side affects yet, it appeals in our quick fix society. There are however natural libido enhancers which will do the same and benefit your overall wellbeing. Here we will look at one of them – Horny Goat Weed.

Weight lifters are not necessarily bodybuilders and bodybuilders are not just weight lifters. Sure, a bodybuilder lifts weights to get his physique in a certain shape; however, the training styles of a weight lifter versus a bodybuilder fall on different ends of the spectrum.

Bodybuilders are feelers, not lifters. Weight lifters are all about poundage, and that’s it. During competitions, bodybuilders aren’t judged on how much weight they lift, like a weight lifter, but on the visual end results. Neither training technique is wrong, just…different. Can a bodybuilder become a competitive weight lifter? Sure. Can a lifter become a feeler? Sure.

When I first started my bodybuilding career, I would go to the gym and do all my exercises with my eyes closed. This method forced me to feel the weight in my hands versus just lifting it. Feeling the movement and the amount of resistance forced me to have better form and, in the end, better-quality results. I just didn’t go into the gym and see how much I could lift — I lifted at certain weights with the proper form to achieve a target body shape.

Hey, if your thing is power lifting, then have at it. If it’s bodybuilding, then enjoy that, too. The key is to understand that each style of weight training is designed for one of two different training types — feelers or lifters — each with valuable but very different goals.

If you want to succeed in body-building there are a few strategies you need to develop. If you don’t change your way of life you will not be ready to achieve your goal in body-building. The reason being because alcohol contains plenty of calories which have no use to the body since they lack any nutritive worth.

1. Always Stay focused
If you don’t know what you need or if you don’t set clear goals why you took body-building in the first place you will not be able to succeed in this sport. If you do not stay focused you won’t be able to achieve your goal.

two. Stay galvanized
If you want to succeed in bodybuilding it’s also important that you stay motivated. Without proper incentive you won’t be ready to achieve success in body-building since you’ll lack the psychological drive needed to succeed in this sport. Sometime it is very tricky to achieve muscles growth especially if you are not genetically presented. This is the reason why you want to remain galvanized thru so that you do not end up giving up.
3. Your body consists seventy percent of water and that’s the more reason why you should ensure that you never get dehydrated.

four. Ensure that you mostly Rest
Resting is of equal importance as training intensely because if you do not get correct rest you will not be able to achieve muscle growth.

Following a 1991 article published in Iron Man magazine, I received a ton of calls asking how it was that I was able to win the Masters Mr. America using the push-up alone for upper body development. The first problem is that I did not do only push-ups for upper body development. Unfortunately, the way the article was written led many to this false belief. I would be quick to set them straight. I did use push-ups, but used them along with other apparatus-based upper body exercises. Push-ups were a great addition to my routine when I was unable to do bench presses and other apparatus-based chest exercises due to an injury.

My conversations with people about the Iron Man article typically led to me sharing my repertoire of “non-apparatus training” techniques for the entire body. I believe in the power of non-apparatus training techniques when you cannot perform apparatus-based exercises due to injury, lack of equipment, or any other valid reason. However, you have to have to perform non-apparatus techniques at a level of intensity that would emulate what you would perform on an apparatus. You have to use appropriate set and rep counts to challenge your body in such a way as to create parallel gains to what you’d see using apparatus. I would not recommend replacing an apparatus-based training routine with a non-apparatus-based routine. Use non-apparatus training to supplement an apparatus-based routine, not replace it. The bottom line is that non-apparatus training is helpful when you don’t want to give up your training routine altogether due to circumstances which prevent you from using an appartus.

Now that we’ve set the fact straight, I would like to share my recommendations for a non-apparatus training routine should you ever find yourself in a situation where you would need to implement one. I’ll highlight some upper body techniques in my next post and lower body techniques in the following post.

Until next time, keep training hard.

She grew up a competitive gymnast, switched from figure to bodybuilding, and even recently set a world record in powerlifting. Now, Lori Steele can add IFBB Pro Bodybuilder to a prolific set of achievements after winning the lightweight class at the Nationals on Saturday night.

The champion all-around athlete from New Hampshire withstood some tough competition in Florida, edging hometown favorite Kirsten Haratyk (second) and the always considerable Barbara Fletcher (third) — both probably future pros.

Other solid contenders included 44-year-old sensation Stacey Pillari (fourth) and fellow studio hardbody Laurie Smith, who curiously slipped to tenth place despite bringing an amazing physique and stylish new look to the stage.

But none of them could stop the L-Train from steamrolling through the lightweights. In her only show of the year, this Steele wouldn’t bend, much less break.

As the NPC Nationals unfold in Southeast Florida today, one competitor not likely to be feeling any travel fatigue is bodybuilder Kirsten Haratyk, who lives in nearby Delray Beach and could probably jog down to the show in Hollywood for a little last minute cardio.

Just kidding. But it’s safe to say the 35-year-old personal trainer will be rested, ready and a hometown favorite among many family and friends coming to cheer the 5-foot-1 powerhouse from the audience.

Kirsten comes into the season finale as a lightweight after finishing second in the middleweight class at the recent USAs. Fortunately, the 110-pounder has had success competing in the smaller class before — she won the lightweights at the 2006 Junior Nationals — and should be one to look out for again.

By Jared Barchus

On the evening of November 10th, 2009, the Penn Women’s Track & Field team and Coach Tony Tenisci hosted the 18th Annual Mr. & Mrs. Penn Bodybuilding Contest. The sold-out bodybuilding competition took place in Zellerbach Theater in the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts and featured thirty-seven of Penn’s finest undergraduate and graduate students.

For 8 weeks, these thirty-seven student-athletes trained and dieted to chisel their bodies into a perfect form. “I worked out daily and I was on a diet beginning one month prior to the competition. This diet consisted of no sugar, no soda, no mayo, no dairy or cream based foods, no fried foods or oily foods,” junior Emanuel Bryant said.

Many of the competitors were accustomed to a rigorous training regiment, as several of the participants compete for Penn’s interscholastic sports teams. Seven male and nine female Penn Track & Field athletes, two male Lightweight Rowers, and three Penn Cheerleaders entered the competition. However, many students in Wharton, the School of Nursing, and College of Arts and Sciences came out to strut their stuff on Tuesday night as well.

The competitors were separated by height and gender. After a group pose-off, each competitor performed a 90-second choreographed routine for the judges – a compilation of Penn head coaches and bodybuilding trainers.

The men’s Short Class was the largest field of competitors, consisting of thirteen participants. Fan-favorite Alan-Michael Hill, a member of Penn Track, placed 3rd in the Short Class after a sultry performance dedicated to the Women’s Track & Field team. Wharton students Rudolph Broomes and Aaron Marbley paid tribute to Michael Jackson by performing routines to the music of the late pop icon. Broomes, equipped with a white glove during his performance, ended up placing 2nd in his class. The first-place winner of the Short Class was Mike Castelo, a representative Penn Recreation. Other notable competitors included Penn Track start Darryll Oliver, who brought out the flag of his home country Jamaica, and Wharton sophomore Marbley, who wooed the audience with his powerful poses.

“I knew what moves I wanted to do, and knew I wanted to incorporate them into a Michael Jackson song. I practiced my routine a little bit before the show, but a lot of that was making sure each move precise and brought the best out of my appearance. On stage, I just let it flow and tried to get the crowd involved,” Aaron commented after the show.

The men’s Tall Class did not cease to excite either. Senior Joe Ruzbarsky, a Penn Track athlete, placed 3rd in his class. Joe also ended up taking home the award for Best Male Pose/Routine. Second place went to Emanuel Bryant, a member of the NSP Gospel choir and another fan-favorite. Emanuel performed a routine to a mixture of songs, including “Raise Up”, which tributes his home state of North Carolina. “I am originally from North Carolina and there are not a lot of us here at Penn, so I just wanted to rep North Carolina! I just wanted to personalize my routine as much as possible and I thought that my song selection was an accurate representation of my routine and myself,” said Bryant.

Tim Grocke, and Penn Post Baccalaureate student, took first in the tall class.

On the women’s side, Nicole Thomas of Penn Cheerleading took 3rd in the Short Class, after a stunning acrobatic performance. “I wanted to have a lot of fun and show the audience what the Cheerleading program is all about: strength, athleticism, jumps, and charisma!” She is looking forward to next year’s competition. “I was very surprised to get third! I thought I wasn’t going to get called up at all, but watch out for me next year! I’m looking for the trophy!”

Jesse Carlin and Kim Le, two Penn alumni, placed 1st and 2nd respectively in their class. Senior Penn Track star Kelly Allred also gave a memorable performance, as she graced the stage with a “Vogue”” swagger, while Sophomore Kesi Irvin, in her song selection and performance, displayed why she should be considered “Bossy”.

The women of the Penn Track team made their presence known in the Women’s Tall Class. Mrs. Penn 2008 Megan Van Buskirk of Penn Track garnered the 1st place trophy, while Paige Madison of Penn Track and Jackie Tome, a dentistry student, took 2nd and 3rd respectively. Megan took also home the trophy for Best Female Pose/Routine. Senior Hallie Cope stunned the audience with an array of athletic moves, while sophomore Leah Brown and junior Kali Strother worked the stage with elegance and charm. Freshman Amber Scott showed the audience why she was “too sexy for her shirt”.

The winners of the Mr. & Mrs. Penn Bodybuilding Contest 2009 were Jesse Carlin and Mike Castelo.

Overall, the Mr. & Mrs. Penn contest exemplified the hard work and dedication of the thirty-seven competitors to living healthy and fit lives.

Dr. Jonn Randel is a well-known Canadian product formulator and speaker, best known for establishing

Dr. Jonn Randel is a well-known Canadian product formulator and speaker, best known for establishing and popularizing the field of nutraceutical formulations to make a holistic wellness lifestyle available to all. He is based in Richmond, B.C., near Vancouver, Canada, and has developed many cutting edge nutritional and skin care programs. In addition he has successfully coached many wellness companies and taught seminars on physical, mental, financial and emotional wellness. He has helped over ten companies with their product formulations and currently oversees the manufacture of several natural holistic products including organic skin care.

Jonn’s philosophy is that we are what we believe, think, act, say, eat and do. Many people have written about one aspect of these truths; however Jonn is unique in combining all these truths into one integrated philosophy. From the early age of nineteen, Jonn set out to discover the truths, both ancient and modern, of how we can live a healthy life. Jonn noticed during his high school and early university years that many people were waiting to fulfill their dreams. They seemed to think that if they simply did what seemed practical and responsible at the time, perhaps one day when they retired, they could focus on what they really wanted to do. For Jonn, this did not seem like a good blueprint for life. So he set out to find answers on how anyone can achieve their maximum potential through ancient and modern wellness secrets.

When Jonn’s mother died when he was 22 he noticed his mother and father did not fulfill their dreams to travel together in retirement. His father, who was a UN executive, lost his memory in his later years. Also, Jonn saw many other people that lose their energy and/or will to fulfill their dreams by the time they reached their sixties. This led him to think that perhaps we should maintain a balanced wellness lifestyle throughout our lives so that we can not only fulfill our dreams, but have enough energy to help others along the way.

To achieve his ambitious goal of empowering others to fulfill their dreams, Jonn allied himself with many of the world’s best innovators in the health and wellness field, and has never stopped studying, testing, refining and improving his acclaimed concepts, products and formulas.

Jonn Randel was born in Munich, Germany in 1951. His father worked for the United Nations, which resulted in Jonn moving to Japan when he was 3 years old. He completed high school near Niagara Falls, Canada and began studying natural medicine in 1971. His first mentor and teacher was a well-known author by the name of John H. Tobe, who lived near Niagara Falls. Mr. Tobe had an organic farm where Jonn purchased organic food. Tobe was the first person and author that Jonn knew who predicted the use of chemicals in food would result in cancer and other diseases, as a result of lowered immunity and greater environmental challenges to health.

Jonn went to university in Canada, the United States, Spain and Switzerland, and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Science. He later received a work study doctorate in natural medicine. During his studies in the United States, Jonn met author Harold Bloomfield and Dr. Keith Wallace, who had a PhD in physiology. Jonn learned from both teachers how the mind influences the body. As a result of Jonn’s wellness courses, he was often written about in the local newspapers of the Niagara region. He also appeared on T.V. in both Canada and the U.S .His growing reputation as a speaker and seminar leader led to his teaching mind body seminars to the Niagara regional teacher’s association.

From 1973 onwards, Jonn studied and lived the ideals of a healthy lifestyle and taught these concepts in the form of evening seminars, daily exercise programs and weekend retreats. He also began to travel internationally to Spain, Switzerland and the U.S. to further his studies. In 1977, Jonn traveled to Mill Valley, California, to work as vice president under Dr. Scott Treadway for the new whole food supplements company Golden Epoch. After moving to Vancouver, BC in 1978, Jonn worked for Barry Carlsen, for the emerging wellness product company Quest Vitamins.

He had hoped to import whole food supplements from the U.S. but he was told by Health Canada that these products would never be approved.

1979, Jonn was inspired enough to start his own company and within a year, his son Kryshan was born, in 1980. After months of research, Jonn recognized that the science of aromatherapy had not yet been introduced to health food stores in Canada, so he began importing and distributing essential oils. As the oils were for external use, Health Canada did not seem to mind. Jonn also studied the use of aromatherapy, and began to use the relevant oils in his own wellness lifestyle. He uses these oils today in his skin care treatments, and has advised many companies on their essential oil needs.

Jonn started his business with no capital or family support. His experience in the wellness industry had mostly been in teaching and studying holistic health concepts. Despite these limitations, he believed in the power of thought, belief, action and prayer and courageously set out to start a business, family and buy a house all in one year. Looking back, Jonn thinks it was a miracle he was able to do this.

The 1980’s were a time of study and experience of creating innovative natural products. His creation of the amino acid formulas in 1983 led Jonn to take nutritional science courses with Dr. John Black in Vancouver to futher his knowledge of the emerging nutraceutical product market. During these years Jonn travelled throughout the USA, to seek out the best health supplement companies. He began to import from both Source Naturals and Country Life, now two of the most successful companies in North America. He helped the CEO of Country Life, Harold Drexler, obtain many difficult to get DINS (Drug Identification Numbers). He still helps with Source Naturals exports into Canada today. Solgar, another successful U.S company also benefited from Jonn’s consulting abilities.

In 1983, Jonn became the first person in Canada to import free-form amino acids. His first product was a combination of amino acid proteins, arginine, ornithine, and lycine, a precursor to growth hormone release from the pituitary gland, which helps the body to be trimmer and healthier. One of Jonn’s specialties is the formulation of hormonal support products.

Jonn’s company was first to import many nutraceuticles into Canada. These include Co-enzyme Q-10, a complete array of freeform amino acids including l-tryptophan, melatonin, chlorella, Klamath blue green algae, shark cartilage, fish oils, gamma oryzonal, octacosinol, greenlipped muzzle extract, jojoba oil etc.

Another mentor came from an unexpected source. Eginoff Bohm was head of the approval process for natural products for western Canada. He was very helpful. Jonn became an expert at achieving Canadian government approvals and came out with a full line of free form amino acid products from Japan. After approving and allowing the sale of these safe beneficial protein supplements, the Canadian government, without any warning, banned their sale in 1983, which was a business setback. Because there is no reason to ban such beneficial supplements they allowed their sale many years later. This was the beginning of the governments allowing, banning, allowing policy which made it difficult to be innovative and stay in business in Canada.

In 1984, after the restriction of amino acids, Jonn began to import homeopathy. The government banned the sale of most of these products about a year later. Homeopathy has always been allowed in Canada; however the government would not allow companies to make any claims or say what the products did, which made selling them impractical. Jonn met and worked with a prominent homeopathic formulator Gary Parker. Over the next few years, they discussed making more effective homeopathic natural medicines with unique ingredients such as amino acids and flower extracts that were not being used in homeopathic formulas anywhere in North America at the time. Jonn completed over thirty formulas in this category alone and obtained many government approvals for these products.

In the mid eighties, Jonn spent years refining his knowledge of sublingual absorption nutrients which included homeopathy, flower extracts and trace elements such as ayurvedic gold and silver. Dr. Tom Glu from Vancouver met with Jonn about a dozen times to father his knowledge about the best remedies in this interesting category of sublingual, fast absorption remedies. Jonn also worked with Dr. Ian White, a well known author form Australia who is a specialist in flower extracts. Both Jonn and Ian were asked to speak at the international conference on vibration medicine in Victoria, B.C., Canada with Dr. Gerber and molecular medicine experts from around the world. Although it was very difficult, Jonn did obtain Canadian drug identification numbers (DIN’S), on many of his formations such as thymus, adrenal and pituitary remedies.

During the same period Jonn completed 23 ayurvedic formulas during his studies with several world health experts. None of these remedies were approved by the Canadian government. However, Jonn uses the principles of ayurvedic balancing in all his formulas. Jonn imported ayurvedic triphala (a balancing cleansing herb), by the ton, from India to supply Planitary Formulas (a division of Source Naturals); Jonn studied with Dr. Trivedi, one of the world’s finest avurvedic physicians who were trained in both modern medical science and the ancient art of ayurveda. Dr. Trivedi introduced Jonn to Dr. Ladd, a well known author and founder of a New Mexico ayurvedic clinic. In addition, Jonn spent a lot of time with Dr. Robert Svoboda who was the only Westerner, at that time, to complete the six-year study of ayurveda in India.

In 1985 Jonn’s daughter Alyse was born. He raised both his children with a very healthy lifestyle.

There was no white sugar, white flour or TV in the house. They had goats milk and a little yogurt instead of regular cow’s milk. His children went to bed early after Jonn spent time reading and praying with them. On weekends, Jonn would take them to parks to be in nature, twelve months of the year. He never bought them any soft drinks or fed them the cheap white sugar white flour cereals so popular today. At Halloween they were allowed three candies. When they came home from school they were fed healthy snacks such as fruit in season or apples and almond butter or tahini for calcium. He read them Bible stories at night and never allowed them to have any vaccinations. He paid the extra fees of a Montassori school and often had to drive them there.

Jonn gave his children probiotics, garlic and other supplements in their yogurt so that they would have strong immune systems and not get the unnecessary flues and colds that most children get. He took them to his favorite TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) doctor as opposed to western medical doctors. Jonn’s children rarely saw regular MD’s and to this day turn to wellness solutions as opposed to drugs which Jonn believes are a main cause of declining health. Kryshan and Alyse follow their Dad’s philosophy of going after your dreams with a balanced wellness lifestyle which includes emotional, mental and spiritual health. Jonn considers his children his best friends and would like to write a book on the subject. He is appalled at how children are being raised today.

In 1990, Jonn teamed up with several Canadian natural health experts, including one of his first clients Dr. Croft Woodruff, president of the Canadian Health Food Association. Together, with Jack Crisp (CHFA business director), and other industry leaders such as Bill Renolds, Jonn created a position paper representing the wellness industry for the federal government, about the different categories of natural medicines. Jonn also set up an industry meeting with the western director of Health Canada, Dennis Shelly, to discuss issues such as the banning of safe natural health supplements. Almost every supplement banned by the government, such as melatonin and germanium, were later allowed because there was no reason to ban them in the first place. Jonn lost half his business four times over these changing regulations but managed in each to overcome these setbacks.

In 1992 Jonn completed two tropical rainforest herbal tonics, for both men and women, with the well known Canadian herbalist and author, Dr Terry Willard.

Jonn has received many Canadian Drug Identification Numbers (DINS), and is an expert consultant in this area. As a result of his expertise, he was asked by Hal Drexller, the CEO of Country Life Vitamins in New York to obtain DINS for their products. He also set out to get DINS for his homeopathic products. He was very successful in obtaining many DIN approvals for both Country Life and his own formulas.

Many importers and distributors of fine natural products in Canada were fed up with the inconsistent, unnecessarily complex and constantly changing government regulations. Their hope was that the federal government would allow the claims published in internationally recognized reference books. This would lead to Canadian companies being allowed to sell products with reasonable claims, without the constant threat of the Canadian government stopping the sale of safe natural products. As a result of industry feedback, of which Jonn was very proactive, it was hoped that the political climate of the federal government towards natural medicines would improve. Today some claims are allowed, mainly on simple products. More creative products are very difficult to get approved.

In 1993 he was asked by the BC government to speak to speak to five hundred entrepreneurs on how to start a business and maintain its success. He since has developed and taught a three seminar series on how to achieve success in life. He would like to do more teaching and writing in this area of balanced success in life.

In 1994, Jonn co-chaired a task force for the regional Vancouver board. The goal was to produce a statistically correct report, based on an extensive survey of individuals, to determine their preferences for health care. He asked John Smith, MA who had extensive experience at the B.C. cancer agency to help , along with Dr. Jackson Chang any many others. Dr. Chang became Jonn’s main mentor in Chinese medicine. With the help of over thirty volunteers, the health report was completed.

He continued his study about essential oils and aromatherapy in 1995 with Dr. Brian Miller and his wife Light Millar. He deepened his understanding of the effects of light and the power of belief systems with Dr. Jacob Lieberman, author of Light Medicine of the Future. In addition he studied biokinesiology expert practitioner Steve Ariss in order to improve his sublingual formulas.

Jonn has developed and taught a course on ayurveda and marriage and believes emotional health to be one of the four pillars of total wellness along with mental, and physical and spiritual health. He has learnt a lot from his own personal life. In 1995, Jonn’s first wife, and mother of his two children, decided to pursue her interest of painting in her own live in art studio away from the family. This led to a separation and divorse in 1997. This happened when his son Kryshan was seventeen, and his daughter Alyse was twelve. From that time, Jonn raised the children without her. This led Jonn to deeply study relationships and the importance of emotional health on wellness. Jonn married Michelle Chen in 2005, and is now a grandfather, as his daughter Alyse has a son. Jonn’s son Kryshan, is a successful director and film maker, and designed, filmed and produced Jonn’s product DVD. Michelle helps with graphic design and printing and helps Jonn oversee the skin care manufacturing. Michelle and Jonn enjoy working closely together.

In 1996, Jonn spent an entire year formulating essential oil combinations with one of the top aromatherapists in the world, Sylla Sheppard Hangar of the Atlantic Institute of Aromatherapy. Hangar is a world-class formulator who co-authored the Aromatherapy Practitioners Manual with Martin Watt from England, which is considered a desk reference for aromatherapists worldwide. Hangar enabled Jonn to finalize the formulas for an all-natural perfume line, as well as essential oil combinations. Sylla came to visit Jonn in Vancouver along with Martin Watt. These two world renowned essential oil experts greatly helped him perfect his aroma therapy blends, many of which he uses in his skin care treatments today.

In 1997, Jonn was asked by the BC government along with other industry leaders, such as Dr Ma, to help write a report on BC botanicals. The government paid for the expenses of Jonn and the other contributing experts to complete a botanical report.

In 1998, Jonn was asked to provide Dr David Wang and Carsten Hagen, with a formulation HGH (human growth hormone) /IGF) insulin growth hormone) sublingual homeopathic spray. Dr. Bori Shushan (PhD chemistry), helped with this exciting project. Jonn had previously obtained a DIN (drug identification number), for a homeopathic pituitary gland sublingual spray. The pituitary gland is responsible for the production of HGH so Jonn was off to a good start. Jonn asked Dr Shushan, a specialist in mass spectrometer testing to help with this project. Dr. Shushan was chosen by SCIEX, a world leader in mass spectrometer testing, to work with a US FDA team to develop protocols, for testing the size and shape of the HGH molecule. With this experience, Dr Shushan was able to advise Jonn on the best direction to achieve the maximum results for his IGF/HGH sublingual spray. This was Jonn’s second product that encourages the pituitary gland to produce healthy amounts of HGH (human growth hormone).

More assignments followed. In 1999 Michael Beresford of the Vancouver skin care distribution company Moor Spa, asked Jonn to formulate some spa products, including a facial cream, using Austrian moor mud. Jonn completed these spa products and then created a healing pain relief cream for a US mail-order company in Oregon called Blue Mountain Herbs. This all natural chemical free cream continues to him an enormous success, relieving the pain of many suffering people. Jonn began to distribute this cream in Canada, and later modified the ingredients to create a similarly effective facial cream. This face, skin and joint cream is now distributed to over two hundred pharmacies and health food stores in Washington, Oregon and Canada.

Jonn has been privileged to spend time with Dr. Tomas Barnard M.D., one of the few board certified anti-aging doctors in Canada. Dr. Barnard had heard of Jonn’s work and asked to meet him in Italy to discuss formulations. As a result, they co-formulated a one a day tablet.

By 2000, Jonn had studied and tested the effects of high potency retinol (vitamin A) in facial care. His retinol formulations were based on Dr. Klingan’s research from the University of Chicago. He then perfected a facial spa rejuvenating anti-aging cream and serum by combining retinol with Co Q-10, MSM (plant sulfur) and therapeutic grade aromatherapy. He also has created masks, body wraps and a plant mineral facial spray for the spa industry.

In 2001, Jonn worked with Hollywood’s top skin care formulator Peter Lammas, who encouraged him to develop a serum with Alpha Lipoic Acid. Lammas was one of Jonn’s most accomplished mentors. His stellar resume included beauty consultant work for such superstars as Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly and Barbara Walters; and the makeup teams for Victoria Secret and James Cameron’s Titanic. Lammas was and still is an enormous fan of Jonn’s work, praising his products above and beyond many of his other clients including Estee Lauder.

In 2002, Jonn began to study the use of organic plant extracts for their anti-fungal properties and their ability to reduce facial fine lines. He quickly realized a special blend of organic plant acids that he created play a key role in nature, to help regulate fungi, bacteria and viruses. By 2003, he was able to use this blend to preserve all his natural skin care products. At first, his interest in the blend of plant acids was focused on skin care to extend shelf life and help reduce wrinkles. However, it was not long before he realized that they had many other uses.

In 2003 he used this proprietary blend of plant acids to develop a series of internal products. These internal products included Detox Body Cleanse, a GI (Gastro Intestinal) cleanse to rid the body of excess negative aerobic bacteria. Based on his extensive study of aryuvedic and body balancing, his concept is to gently allow the intestinal tract to regain homeostasis without over-cleansing.

At this time, Jonn began his research into plant minerals for rejuvenation, and fulvic acid for cellular detox. Jonn recommends daily use of these products.

By 2004, Jonn completed a three-step flu kit, which included nasal spray (excellent for sinus relief), a throat spray (to help eliminate flu viruses), and stomach drops (very effective for food poisoning). This liquid organic plant acid combination has the ability to cleanse the G.I. tract, preventing illness, and even improving the health of animals.

Jonn further studied antibacterial and antifungal qualities of organic plant acids in 2007 with Dr. Ed Smith, an ex-NASA scientist. His lab has done testing for the FDA, EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and the US army. In 2008, Dr. Smith made his lab available to Jonn to test this blend of organic plant acids (which he now called Beyond OPA) against oregano oil. The test results, which are available in both Jonn’s product summary and product manual, indicate that Beyond OPA is three times more effective than Oregano oil in killing bacteria and fungi.

In 2007, Jonn did some formulation work with the well known Canadian facial cosmetic specialist and trainer, Dr. Martin Braun, who specializes in facial cosmetic treatments. Jonn had already been working with two hormonal specialists, Dr. Rob Mclintock and Dr. Allison Novens. Novens and Jonn had already collaborated on a hormonal cream for ladies using estriol, so it was natural for Jonn to develop an E 3 (Estriol) cream and serum for Dr. Braun’s successful Vancouver practice. In fact Dr. Braun’s practice is the most successful of its kind for Botox treatments in Canada. Braun’s clients loved the products Jonn developed for him. In July of that year Dr. Braun invited Jonn to attend the World Congress Esthetics Medicine 2009.

Jonn’s journey to become a wellness expert has been a long and satisfying one. Jonn has achieved many of his dreams: meeting with world health experts, creating many successful products and formulas; and raising a family that is achieving their own entrepreneurial successes. Jonn’s Christian philosophy is that God has a plan for all of us, and we do not need to live a life of fear. By obeying ancient and modern wellness principles, we are can live a healthy life and fulfil our dreams.
