<p>Diamo le indicazioni di massima per pilotare il Boeing 747 simulato da ACM-5.0-ico e condurre con successo le operazioni di decollo e atterraggio con questo aeroplano. Daremo per scontato di avere già fatto esperienza con un aereo più maneggevole come il Cessna 172RG.</p>

<h2>Cenni storici</h2>
<p>Nel 1915 William Boeing, commerciante di legname nello stato di Washington, cominciò ad interessarsi alla nascente industria dell&#8217;aeronautica. Una volta imparato i rudimenti del volo, si cimentò insieme a un socio nella costruzione del loro primo aeroplano, un idrovolante. Con l&#8217;arrivo della Prima Guerra Mondiale, la Boeing divenne il più grande produttore di caccia militari e aerei da addestramento, per poi dedicarsi ai servizi postali e, successivamente, al trasporto di passeggeri. Nel 1929 il trimotore B-80 era in grado di trasportare 12 passeggeri, e la Boeing era diventata una dei più grandi produttori di aeromobili, ed espanse i suoi interessi in tutti i settori dell&#8217;aeronautica.</p>
<p>Nel 1934 l&#8217;antitrust sciolse la società e William Boeing, amareggiato, lasciò il settore aeronautico. Ciò che rimaneva della società mantenne il nome e si concentrò sui grandi aerei passeggeri e sui bombardieri. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale divennero celebri i bombardieri B-17 e B-29, detti &#8220;fortezze volanti&#8221;, e dopo la fine della guerra produsse il B-52, ancora oggi operativo.</p>

<p>Negli anni &#8216;50 e &#8216;60 il settore del trasporto civile era in piena espansione, e la Boeing passò dagli aerei ad elica agli aerei a getto di varie dimensioni. Nel 1969 entrò in servizio il gigantesco B-747, soprannominato &#8220;Jumbo&#8221; per la sua mole: capace di trasportare oltre 400 passeggeri con bagaglio, fu concepito per le rotte più lunghe e le traversate oceaniche. Ai giorni nostri Boeing produce la maggior parte degli aerei da trasporto civile.</p>
<p><a name="schedatecnica"></a></p>
<h2>Scheda tecnica</h2>
<p>Il B-747 è un aereo versatile disponibile in diversi modelli e diverse configurazioni per adattarsi alle esigenze della clientela. Qui presentiamo le principali caratteristiche tipiche di un B-747-400.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.icosaedro.it/acm/boeing-747-profilo.png" alt="" align="right" /> <strong>Dimensioni:</strong> lunghezza 69 m, larghezza 64 m, altezza 19 m. <strong>Massa a vuoto:</strong> 370&#8242;000 libbre (168&#8242;000 kg). <strong>Motori:</strong> 4 da 50&#8242;000 lbf di spinta. <strong>Consumo medio:</strong> 24&#8242;000 lb/h. <strong>Serbatoi:</strong> fino a 360&#8242;000 libbre (163&#8242;000 kg). <strong>Passeggeri:</strong> 430. <strong>Range:</strong> 8400 NM (15&#8242;500 km). <strong>Service ceiling:</strong> 41&#8242;000 ft (12&#8242;500 m). <strong>Velocità:</strong> 250 kt fino a 10000 ft; 0.50-0.60 Mach da 10000 ft a 16000 ft; 0.60-0.79 Mach da 18000 ft a 31000 ft; 0.80 Mach oltre i 31000 ft. <strong>Velocità di crociera:</strong> da 0.80 a 0.88 Mach. <strong>Inversori di spinta:</strong> azionare fino a velocità inferiore a 80 kt. <strong>Freni:</strong> azionare per velocità inferiori a 80 kt. <strong>Manovre a terra:</strong> 15 kt, 25 kt max, 8 kt on turn. <strong>Lunghezza pista:</strong> almeno 2 NM (12&#8242;000 ft). <strong>V<sub>1</sub>:</strong> 124 kt (100&#8242;000 lb fuel, 20° flaps). <strong>V<sub>R</sub>:</strong> 135 kt (100&#8242;000 lb fuel, 20° flaps). <strong>V<sub>2</sub>:</strong> 148 kt (100&#8242;000 lb fuel, 20° flaps). <strong>Vento massimo:</strong> 10 kt in coda, 30 kt di lato.</p>
<p>Come abbiamo detto, il B-747 è concepito per i lunghi voli ad alta quota, dato che alle basse quote (meno di 15&#8242;000 ft) l&#8217;efficienza dei motori si riduce. Il <strong>service ceiling</strong> è la quota massima alla quale l&#8217;aereo può mantenere un rateo di salita di 100 ft/min e rappresenta, in pratica, la massima quota alla quale l&#8217;aereo può manovrare.</p>
<p><strong>V<sub>1</sub></strong> è la massima velocità fino alla quale il pilota può abortire il decollo nel caso qualcosa vada storto (ad esempio si ferma un motore); evidentemente il suo valore dipende anche dal carico di carburante e dalla lunghezza della pista, per cui quello che ho riportato va considerato come un valore esemplificativo. Se la velocità supera V<sub>1</sub> il pilota non ha altra scelta che tentare il decollo.</p>
<p>Alla velocità <strong>V<sub>R</sub></strong> il pilota tira il volantino e il muso dell&#8217;aereo inizia ad alzarsi, e poco dopo la ruota anteriore si stacca del suolo. Anticipare o ritardare questa azione da parte del pilota comporta sprecare pista.</p>
<p><strong>V<sub>2</sub></strong> è la velocità alla quale dovrebbe avvenire il distacco da terra del carrello principale.</p>
<p>Per le velocità più elevate si usa il <strong>numero di Mach</strong>. Abbiamo visto parlando della strumentazione di bordo che la velocità del suono dipende dalla quota, e pertanto per calcolare i tempi di percorrenza ad una data velocità espressa in Mach dovremo tenere conto anche della quota scelta.</p>
<p><a name="decollo"></a></p>
<h2>Decollo</h2>
<p>La strumentazione dei moderni 747 è ormai completamente aggiornata, e davanti al pilota, al posto dei vecchi strumenti, ci sono i display del computer di bordo che mostrano la situazione di volo e lo stato dei sistemi. Per sicurezza in caso di guasto del sistema computerizzato, al centro della cabina ci sono anche i consueti strumenti analogici che il nostro programma riproduce nella modalità &#8220;strumentazione classica&#8221;. In ogni caso le informazioni visualizzate in un sistema o nell&#8217;altro sono sempre le stesse: altitudine, velocità, pitch, bank e così via.</p>
<p>Riportiamo la procedura tipica per il decollo con il Boeing 747 con il nostro simulatore:</p>
<ol>
<li>Partiamo con 100&#8242;000 lb di carburante, che ci danno circa tre ore di volo e un&#8217;ora di riserva.</li>
<li>Portarsi all&#8217;estremità della pista e allineare perfettamente l&#8217;aereo con la striscia centrale. L&#8217;aeroporto di Addison che il programma propone per default non è adatto per decollare in sicurezza perché lungo solo 7200 ft, ma per fare una prova va bene lo stesso. Di sicuro non potremmo decollare da qui con il serbatoio pieno.</li>
<li>Inserire i freni.</li>
<li>Abbassare i flap a 20 gradi.</li>
<li>Portare il motore al massimo e quando la lancetta raggiunge il 70% rilasciare i freni.</li>
<li>Fare attenzione alla velocità: appena raggiunge i 135 kt tirare il mouse il più possibile. La prora dovrebbe alzarsi di qualche grado. Non eccedere i 10°; a 15° la coda striscia sulla pista!</li>
<li>Appena l&#8217;aereo si è staccato dal suolo (il variometro segna positivo) in sequenza occorre:
<ul>
<li>ridurre il pitch in modo da mantenere un rateo di salita di circa 2000 ft/min</li>
<li>ritrarre il carrello</li>
<li>ridurre la potenza in modo che la velocità sia circa 240 kt</li>
<li>togliere i flap regolando la potenza e il pitch di conseguenza</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Una volta stabilizzato il rateo di salita su 2000 ft/min circa, inserire l&#8217;auto-pilota nel modo &#8220;hold climb rate&#8221; e regolare la potenza per mantenere 240 kt. Assicurarsi di avere ritratto il carrello e i flap!</li>
<li>Raggiunta quota 10&#8242;000 ft possiamo aumentare gradualmente la velocità a 0.50-0.60 Mach dando più potenza, sempre mantenendo un rateo di salita di 2000 ft/min.</li>
<li>Raggiunta quota 16&#8242;000 ft ridurre progressivamente il rateo di salita a circa 1&#8242;200 fpm, lasciando crescere la velocità verso i 0.7 Mach. Proseguire con questo rateo e velocità fino alla quota di crociera, tipicamente compresa tra 24&#8242;000 e 35&#8242;000 ft. Qui supporremo che la quota di crociera sia solo di 20&#8242;000 ft, adatta per i voli brevi.</li>
<li>All&#8217;approssimarsi della quota di crociera, ridurre il rateo di salita a 500 ft/min.</li>
<li>Raggiunta la quota di 20&#8242;000 ft regolare la velocità su 0.80 Mach, che a questa quota corrisponde a una TAS di 490 kt. Per quote più elevate è possibile mantenere una velocità maggiore con minore consumo di carburante. 41&#8242;000 ft è la quota massima di manovra, ma per arrivarci dovremo stare attenti a mantenere un rateo di salita molto piccolo perché l&#8217;aereo diventa molto instabile per via dell&#8217;aria rarefatta.</li>
</ol>
<p><a name="atterraggio"></a></p>
<h2>Atterraggio</h2>
<p>Prevede tre fasi: ridurre quota e velocità; raggiungere l&#8217;imbocco del percorso di discesa dell&#8217;ILS; contatto a terra e arresto. La prima fase richiede un ampio spazio. Per esempio, scendere da 20&#8242;000 ft 0.80 Mach a 5&#8242;000 ft 300 kt &#8220;brucia&#8221; circa 50 NM, per cui bisogna iniziare la manovra con adeguato anticipo sulla distanza dall&#8217;aeroporto. In alternativa possiamo usare i freni aerodinamici, ma questo implica che abbiamo sprecato carburante per raggiungere una quota o una velocità non adatte.</p>
<ol>
<li>Situazione: quota 20&#8242;000 ft, velocità 0.80 Mach, distanza dall&#8217;aeroporto di almeno 80 NM, carburante residuo: 50&#8242;000 lb. Nell&#8217;esempio che faremo dovremo raggiungere quota 5&#8242;000 ft con velocità di 180 kt.</li>
<li>Portare i motori in posizione &#8220;idle&#8221; e lasciare che la velocità scenda a circa 350 kt. Poi inclinare l&#8217;aereo in modo che scenda con un angolo di circa 3 gradi. Mantenere il rateo di circa −2000 ft/min inserendo l&#8217;auto-pilota. La situazione degli strumenti è quella della figura qui sotto. Il B-747 è un buon aliante, con un best glide ratio intorno a 17. Ciò significa che in planata per ogni miglio di quota perso (circa 6000 ft) avremo percorso 17 miglia.<br />
NOTA. Tutti i &#8220;circa&#8221; di questo paragrafo sono dovuti al fatto che ai fini tecnici di sfruttamento del mezzo non è strettamente necessario eseguire le manovre rispettando esattamente questi numeri, <strong>salvo che così sia disposto dal piano di volo.</strong> Ad esempio, tenendo un angolo di discesa più grande arriveremo a terra prima, ma anche la velocità sarà maggiore per cui copriremo una distanza maggiore. In definitiva &#8220;cadremo&#8221; più o meno nello stesso punto.<br />

Il panorama monotono non differisce di molto da quello che i piloti vedono realmente in questa fase. Per mantenere un angolo di discesa di 3 gradi vale la solita formula: velocità_verticale[fpm] = 5 * velocità[kt]. </strong>

<li>Ricordare che sotto i 10&#8242;000 ft vige il limite di 250 kt, per cui prima di raggiungere questo limite dovremo livellare per perdere velocità oppure azionare il freno aerodinamico. Poco prima di raggiungere la quota prevista di 5&#8242;000 ft, per esempio a 6&#8242;000 ft, ridurre gradatamente il rateo di discesa a −500 ft/min.</li>
<li>Raggiunta la quota di circa 5&#8242;000 ft portarsi in volo livellato alla velocità di 180 kt. Inserire l&#8217;AP e l&#8217;AT per mantenere quota e velocità. Seguire le indicazioni della IAP (la carta di volo per l&#8217;avvicinamento all&#8217;aeroporto) e le indicazioni della torre.</li>
<li>Una volta raggiunto il piano del LOCATOR le procedure IAP fanno in modo che a questo punto il GS si trovi sopra di noi, e quindi andremo a intercettare il GS da sotto. Una volta intercettato il piano del GS impostare la discesa sul percorso dell&#8217;ILS. Eseguire nell&#8217;ordine:
<ol>
<li>impostare una velocità ai 160 kt nell&#8217;AT</li>
<li>abbassare il carrello</li>
<li>disabilitare l&#8217;AP</li>
<li>impostare un angolo di discesa di −3°</li>
<li>aumentare i flap a 20°</li>
</ol>
<p>Raggiunta la velocità di 160 kt, controllare il pitch in modo che l&#8217;angolo di discesa sia di 3° con un rateo di −800 ft/min. Inserire l&#8217;AP (<strong>SHIFT-A</strong>) per mantenere questo rateo.</p>
<p>Controllare l&#8217;allineamento con il LOCATOR. Per via della bassa velocità e del grande momento d&#8217;inerzia dell&#8217;aereo, le variazioni di rotta sono lente e bisogna imparare ad anticipare molto le correzioni. Conviene togliere l&#8217;auto-coordinatore e usare solo il timone per controllare l&#8217;allineamento del LOCATOR.</p>
<p>Controllare anche l&#8217;allineamento con il GS. Se è necessario correggere il rateo di discesa, disabilitare l&#8217;AP, agire sul pitch e poi reinserire l&#8217;AP.</p>
<p>L&#8217;aereo dovrebbe scendere docilmente fino alla soglia della pista senza bisogno di troppe correzioni. Se la situazione sfugge di mano, meglio fare un <em>missign approach</em> e riprovare. In tal caso portare i motori al massimo (premere <strong>4</strong>; questo disabilita anche tutti gli altri automatismi), sollevare il carrello (premere <strong>g</strong>), ridurre i flap a 10° (premere <strong>y</strong>) e risalire seguendo la procedura indicata dalle carte.</p>
<p>In alternativa possiamo lasciar fare tutto al pilota automatico inserendo l&#8217;auto-landing (AL), ma così le cose sarebbero troppo facili <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' />
</li>
<li>In prossimità della soglia pista (l&#8217;altimetro radar segna circa 150 ft) togliere l&#8217;AP e riprendere i comandi manuali. Quando l&#8217;altimetro segna circa 100 piedi inizia la <strong>manovra di richiamata</strong> (<em>flare</em>):</li>
<li>Ridurre il motore al minimo (tasto <strong>1</strong>). Questo disabilita anche l&#8217;auto throttle.</li>
<li>Ridurre gradualmente il pitch in modo che la velocità di discesa scenda sotto i −300 ft/min e l&#8217;impatto sia soffice. Attenzione all&#8217;effetto suolo: è sufficiente un piccolo movimento del mouse o si rischia di riprendere quota.</li>
<li>Controllare l&#8217;altimetro radar: appena il carrello principale tocca terra, cominciare ad abbassare la prua in modo da far toccare dolcemente anche la ruota del carrello anteriore.</li>
<li>Azionare il freno aerodinamico (premere quattro volte <strong>s</strong>).</li>
<li>Inserire l&#8217;<strong>inversore di spinta</strong>. Per azionare gli inversori di spinta bisogna prima ridurre la potenza a idle (tasto <strong>1</strong>), poi azionare la paratie (tasto <strong>SHIFT-!</strong>) e quindi portare i motori al 75%, oppure 100% se la pista è molto corta.</li>
<li>Quando la velocità è scesa sotto circa 80 kt, portare il motore al minimo, disinserire l&#8217;inversore di spinta e azionare i freni delle ruote.</li>
<li>Seguire le indicazioni della pista per il taxing verso il parcheggio. La velocità di manovra a terra dovrebbe essere compresa tra 8 kt per le curve strette e i 25 kt massimo sui rettilinei.</li>
</ol>
<p><a name="esercizio1"></a></p>
<h2>Esercizio: atterraggio su Milano &#8211; Malpensa RWY 17L</h2>
<p>L&#8217;atterraggio è la manovra più delicata. Conviene impostare il programma per ripetere lo stesso atterraggio fino a quando si è capaci di eseguirlo con sicurezza. Procurarsi la carta ENAV MILANO/MALPENSA ILS Y RWY 17L (c&#8217;è sul sito VATITA) e avviare il programma con queste impostazioni:</p>

Quota: <strong>5200 ft</strong><br />

Fuel: <strong>50000 lb</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Ci troviamo a 20 NM dall&#8217;aeroporto di Malpensa sul radiale 319 di MAL. Appena avviato il programma l&#8217;inizo è brusco perché l&#8217;aereo è un po&#8217; scomposto. Sollevare il carrello, inserire l&#8217;auto-throttle impostando 180 kt, inserire l&#8217;auto-coordinatore, stabilizzare la quota a 5000 ft e inserire l&#8217;auto-pilota. La figura qui sotto mostra il profilo di discesa verso la pista.</p>

<p>Sintonizzare NAV1 su MAL 111.20 MHz radiale 319 e perfezionare l&#8217;allineamento con il radiale. Sintonizzare NAV2 sul localizer IAM 109.90 MHz 169°.</p>
<p>Una volta passato MAL virare sul radiale 329 e iniziare la discesa a −1000 ft/min fino a quota 3000 ft. Occorre inserire il freno aerodinamico per mantenere la velocità. Per mantenere il rateo di discesa useremo come al solito l&#8217;auto-pilota.</p>
<p>Raggiunta la distanza di 8.0 NM virare a destra a un rateo di circa 2 gradi/s (l&#8217;angolo di bank è di 20 gradi). Passare al NAV2 con l&#8217;ILS. Verso 150 MH cominciare a drizzare per allinearsi al LOCATOR.</p>
<p>Conviene cominciare a ridurre la velocità a 160 con flap a 10 gradi. Scendere a 2700 ft.</p>
<p>Una volta intercettato il GS, abbassare il carrello, ridurre la velocità a 160, impostare un rateo di discesa di −850 ft/min, abbassare i flap a 20 gradi. Concentrarsi sull&#8217;allineamento con il LOCATOR. Notare che dovremo intercettare il LOCATOR da molto vicino; la fase di discesa da D7 alla pista dura solo 2,5 minuti, per cui le manovre vanno eseguite con una certa sollecitudine.</p>
<p>La parte conclusiva dell&#8217;atterraggio prosegue come abbiamo già descritto.</p>

<title><![CDATA[MIRABILISSIMA FOTO DI UN BOEING 747 IN VOLO]]></title>

<div><span style="font-size:medium;color:#000080;"> biocarburante prende il volo. Per la prima volta nella storia dell’aviazione un Boeing 747 decolla inquinando meno. Lo ha fatto l’olandese Klm. Ieri l’aereo è decollato dall’aeroporto di Amsterdam con 40 passeggeri per un volo di un ora. A bordo c’era anche il Direttore del Wwf Olanda: </span></div>
<p><span style="font-size:medium;color:#000080;">“Consente di ridurre le emissioni di gas a effetto serra del 60-80% rispetto al cherosene convenzionale, quindi un grosso passo avanti. Non danneggia le foreste e non è stato prodotto a discapito della catena alimentare”. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size:medium;color:#000080;">Il biodiesel in questione è realizzato da una società di Seattle, negli Stati Uniti, a partire da una pianta erbacea, la camelina. Questo biocarburante alimentava al 50% uno dei 4 reattori del Boeing. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size:medium;color:#000080;">Dopo la febbre da biodiesel finita con la constatazione che la produzione danneggiava la catena alimentare e faceva aumentare il prezzo degli alimenti, mais in primis, la sfida è ora avere un carburante pulito che oltre a non inquinare sia complessivamente sostenibile.</span></p>

<p>The new F-18G will also save the Navy some crew numbers since it will doing the same job as the EA EA-6B Prowler, which was first flown in Viet Nam, and has a crew of 4, a pilot and 3 system operators&#8230;..the Prowler&#8217;s are operating in harm&#8217;s way in the Middle East , and are the only aircraft in the Navy, Marines and Air Force that do the escort jamming mission (electronic warfair)&#8230;..</p>
<p>The F-18 is built by Boeing and has proven that combat systems can be built on time and on budget&#8230;..</p>
<p>They just got to use off the shelf stuff&#8230;that&#8217;s all&#8230;don&#8217;t let the technology get ahead of them&#8230;..</p>
<p>I wonder what the House is gonna do on Marine One?</p>

<p>A Boeing Company anunciou que completou com sucesso a Fase Dois de seu Programa de Benefício Industrial Regional Canadense (do Inglês, Industrial &#38; Regional Benefits &#8211; IRB), pelo Programa de Modernização Aviônica do CF-18 das Forças Canadenses. Este feito, alcançado três anos a frente do cronograma previsto, demonstra o sucesso contínuo da companhia em completar seus compromissos de participação industrial.</p>
<p>A Boeing anunciou em janeiro que havia completado a Fase Um do Programa CF-18 IRB &#8211; um ano antes do cronograma previsto. A companhia implementou com sucesso programas de participação industrial, totalizando mais de US$ 31 bilhões, em quase 40 países, ao longo dos últimos 30 anos.</p>
<p>Além da Fase Dois do Programa CF-18 IRB, estimado em aproximadamente US$ 138 milhões, a Boeing tem quatro programas IRB ativos no Canadá. A companhia está realizando dois outros compromissos, avaliados em quase US$ 1,5 bilhão, ligados à compra e manutenção de quatro avioes cargueiros C-17 &#8211; designado CC-177 para Forças Canadenses &#8211; bem como um compromisso atual de US$ 31 milhões em reinvestimentos no contrato de serviços dos veículos aéreos não tripulados ScanEagle do Canadá.</p>
<p>Mais recentemente, a Boeing iniciou a implementação do programa IRB associado ao contrato para o recebimento, pelo Canadá, de 15 unidades do CH-47 Chinook &#8211; helicóptero de capacidade média e pesada &#8211; designados CH-147 para as Forças Canadenses.</p>
<p>Além do US$ 1,15 bilhão que a Boeing investirá no Canadá como parte do contrato de entrega do CH-147, a companhia também poderá fornecer benefícios à indústria que ultrapassem a marca de US$ 2 bilhões, ao longo de 20 anos, pelo potencial de suporte à frota de CH-147s em serviço.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Reports out of South Carolina say that <strong>Boeing</strong> CEO Jim McNerney&#8217;s <a href="http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2009/oct/30/30sanford/">personal friendship with the wife of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford </a>may well have been a factor in the Company&#8217;s decision to locate a second <strong>787 </strong>production line in Charleston.<img class="alignright" src="http://assets.nydailynews.com/img/2009/06/27/amd_sanford-pauses.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="333" /></p>
<p>Now &#8212; <a href="http://www.palmettoscoop.com/2009/11/20/boeing-has-landed/">just days after welcoming Boeing to his state </a>&#8211; Gov. Sanford faces <a href="http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jVGOp2bl5_prbLYsoPOvD96f55bgD9C5E7880">37 charges that he used his office for personal gain</a>. It&#8217;s now up to the state&#8217;s Attorney General to decide whether to take the governor to court, where he would face fines of up to $74,000, plus the likelihood that the verdict would be used against him by <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/21/us/politics/21sanford.html">a legislative impeachment panel that will meet this week</a>.</p>
<p>According to the allegations made by the state Ethics Board, Sanford:</p>
<ul>
<li>Used state aircraft for personal business, including a 150-mile trip for a haircut, a 300-mile round-trip to attend a son&#8217;s sporting event, a family outing to West Virigina, and other in-state trips so that he and/or members of his staff could attend birthday parties, book signings, Republican Party events and the opening of a rock n&#8217; roll theme park;</li>
<li>Bought business-class tickets for international flights he took 15 times between 2005 and 2009, inviolation of South Carolina laws mandating that state employees take the cheapest flights possible &#8212; one of these was the much-ballyhooed <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/25/AR2009062502013.html">trip to Brazil and Argentina where he met up with his mistress</a>;</li>
<li>Likewise, Sanford bought first-class tickets for himself for flights to Atlanta and New York, inviolation of the same rules;</li>
<li>Improperly used campaign funds to pay for personal expenses, including a hunting trip to Ireland.</li>
</ul>
<p>Sanford&#8217;s lawyer has vowed to <a href="http://www.wmbfnews.com/Global/story.asp?S=11559967">&#8220;answer&#8221; the allegations</a>, and said that none of them should be considered an impeachable offense.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Jenny Sanford</strong> &#8212; whose family connections with McNerney reportedly were so helpful as South Carolina wooed Boeing &#8212; isn&#8217;t sticking around. She&#8217;s <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2009/11/jenny-sanford-the-political-wife-who-did-not-stand-by-her-husband-endorses-in-gop-race-to-succeed-hi.html">endorsed another Republican candidate </a>to replace her husband as South Carolina governor, and the <strong>Associated Press</strong> reports that she and her four children have moved out of the govnernor&#8217;s mansion</p>

<description><![CDATA[Monday the 23th of November I was invited by KLM to attend the special event regarding the first par]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p><em>Monday the 23th of November I was invited by KLM to attend the special event regarding the first partly &#8220;bio-fueled&#8221; flight with passengers on board. The flight would take off on Schiphol, Amsterdam Airport and fly around the Netherlands for approximately one hour. It&#8217;s a demonstration flight with one engine running on a mixture of 50% traditional kerosene and 50% biofuel. The biofuel is not yet certified, but this might be an important step towards a &#8220;greener&#8221; aviation future. The biofuel is made from Camelina, for more info about this plant click <a title="Cameli" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camelina" target="_blank">here</a>. The flight would be attended by VIP&#8217;s like Peter Hartman (CEO of KLM), Maria van der Hoeven (Minister of Economic Affairs) and many others. In total around 40 people would attend the flight. <p><strong>Bad weather</strong></p>
<p>Before I would attend the &#8220;biofuel event&#8221; I first had a little trip around Schiphol East in some hangars. I will write down my experiences later on this blog, but it was really fun to check out the amazing hangars at Schiphol. More of that later. The weather was pretty much horrible: rain, some wind and not a single bit of sunshine made this quite a grey day. But that&#8217;s typically the autumn weather you can expect in The Netherlands. Due to my early arrival at Schiphol I was also very early in the KLM Jet Centre, where the press that would attend the event was welcomed.</p>

<p><strong>Jet Centre</strong></p>
<p>I was there too early and saw the flight crew get their briefing for the flight. After a bit of walking around and the usual &#8220;where should I register and get my press pass&#8221;-hassle I found the area where the press could eat and drink. After a nice bit of small talk with some &#8220;colleagues&#8221; (and an interview) we saw some familiar faces like Peter Hartman, Maria van der Hoeven, but also Wim Kuijken (Secretary-General of Public Works and Water  Management) and André Kuijpers (Dutch astronaut). I also spoke with a woman from Honeywell, the company that made the biofuel that was used for the flight.</p>
<p>After refusing at least 10 glasses of juice/wine/water and 20 slices of bread (catering was great), it was time for some speeching. Peter Hartman officially welcomed Maria van der Hoeven and talked about the importance of this flight and the future of aviation. Next we (the press that did not attend the flight itself) was directed to a bus that took us to the plane to make some pics and cover the boarding process.</p>

<p><strong>Boarding<br />

<p>Luckily it was all dry now, so we could take some excellent pics of the Boeing 747 that would be used for the flight. The Boeing had a special livery with some &#8220;eco&#8221; messages on it and ofcourse thanks from the WWF (which were also involved in the process). We could walk all around the plane and enjoy the overwhelming sight of the blue &#38; white plane, while the attendees boarded the flight. The plane left to take-off and the press was taken back to the Jet Center.</p>

<p><strong>In-flight</strong></p>
<p>After arriving most of the press left, however there was still the opportunity to cover a flight moment and the arrival of the 747. I decided to stay and we were taken next to a runway were the plane would do a so called &#8220;lowpass&#8221;. The airplane would pass the runway on a low altitude to make a nice shot. Unfortunately the rain really started to pour at that moment, which made it a true &#8220;survival adventure&#8221; outside. Luckily after twenty minutes the plane flew really close over our heads, which was just an amazing experience.</p>

<p><strong>Arrival</strong></p>
<p>We hopped back in the bus and drove through the rain back to the place where the passengers would leave. The airplane landed safely and everybody seemed to have enjoyed the flight. Despite the heavy rain and the fierce winds while leaving the plane, most of the VIP&#8217;s haircuts remained in good condition. <p>The event and the flight were both very succesfull and it was great to see the big Boeing take off, knowing that one engine was running on biofuel. Let&#8217;s hope this idea is developed further and that we might see more of these flights in the near future. It was great that KLM launched this initiative and that in the future we can look back at this day and state it was the start of a global change in aviation.</p>

<title><![CDATA[KC-767 to benefit from 787 "surge" line]]></title>

<p>Boeing’s proposed KC-767 refueling tanker will benefit from plans to establish a surge production line for the 787 program.</p>
<p>The connection is not obvious, for Boeing didn’t suggest as much when it announced that Charleston (SC) will be the location for the second 787 production line. As Line 2 is being established, Boeing will put a “surge” 787 line in Everett (WA), where Line 1 is located. The surge line will be in the forward bay where the 767 line is, requiring relocating the 767 line to the aft part of the bay.</p>
<p><!--more-->Boeing plans to implement Lean production practices in the relocated 767 line, which has its origins for the airplane’s 1982 entry-into-service date. Lean practices will result in about “a 20% improvement in unit time as we increase [the production] rate and incorporate efficiencies,” a 767 program spokesperson tells us.</p>
<p>Boeing will begin to relocate the 767 line in 1Q2010; it will be operational in 1Q2011.</p>
<p>The efficiencies include:</p>
<ul>
<li>New tool designs with new technology and automation that will reduce flow, rebalance the line and improve assembly efficiencies;</li>
<li>Improving employee ergonomics;</li>
<li>New tooling to reduce the flow required to assemble the wings, which improves inventory holding costs and quality and overall costs;</li>
<li>Laser alignment in place of manual tools; and, among other things,</li>
<li>Incorporating auto-riveting and drilling to improve unit time and quality.</li>
</ul>
<p>The smaller footprint also will allow Boeing to streamline processes and consolidate support.</p>
<p>Boeing declined to quantify the before-and-after employee head count for the 767 line.  But the spokesperson said that a planned production rate increase in 2011 from one to two 767s a month will require the addition of “several hundred people in various skills.</p>
<p>“The increased efficiency means we will increase by less than we would have and build a better product. The increase in efficiency will allow us to sell even more 767s in the next few years.”</p>
<p>These benefits have clear implications for the prospect of building the KC-767 tanker should Boeing win the contract, which the USAF hopes to award in August next year (a goal we believe may be optimistic, given the political meddling that is going on). Most observers already believe a protest by the loser is likely, further delaying the contract.</p>
<p>Assuming Boeing selects the KC-767 as its choice to bid for the Air Force’s KC-X (which we think will be the case), the lower cost of building the airplane will be reflected in Boeing’s bid price, the 767 spokesperson confirms. With the competition so far emphasizing cost rather than value in the Draft RFP (Air Force rhetoric to the contrary notwithstanding), this should Boeing an additional advantage over the larger Northrop Grumman KC-30, based on the Airbus A330-200, which has a higher list price than Boeing’s 767-200ER on which the KC-767 is based.</p>
<p>The Air Force currently plans to procure its KC-X at the rate of 12-18 a year, or 1 to 1 ½ a month. The KC-X must also be what is called ITAR-compliant, which means access to military-unique equipment must be controlled during production. The new, Lean line will be prepared for ITAR requirements, says the  Boeing spokesperson.</p>
<p>Boeing faces the challenge of relocating the line while the 767 is in production.</p>
<p>“We will continue to build airplanes sections in our current tools and location during the product line relocation,” the spokesperson tells us. “This process will require a synchronized, highly sequenced series of activities to minimize disruption. Concurrently, we will be reactivating rate tools, upgrading and incorporating improvements, adding new technology and moving and building new tools as part of this relocation activity. As a standard practice, we maintain and use our existing tools until tool tryouts are complete for all-new, upgraded, reactivated and moved tools. This is how we will mitigate disruption to our active production line.”</p>
<p>Although our emphasis in this column is how Lean will aid Boeing in a KC-767 bid cost basis, the hints that Boeing may gain more 767 sales in connection with  the 787 surge should not be overlooked, either.</p>

<p>Finnair Technical Services (Helsinki) has completed the installation of Aviation Partners Boeing Blended Winglets to the first Condor Flugdienst (Frankfurt) Boeing 757-300. 757-330 D-ABOE (msn 29012) is pictured being towed today (November 22) to engine run-up area at Helsinki.</p>
<p>The scheduled departure will be tomorrow afternoon. Finnair Technical Services will install the winglets on all 13 Condor Boeing 757-330s. A second aircraft arrived at HEL on Friday evening (November 20) and a third will arrive tomorrow (November 23).</p>

<p>The Boeing Co. landed orders for 11 of its 737 single-aisle aircraft on the third day of the Dubai Air Show, the company said Tuesday.</p>
<p>Boeing’s rival Airbus had announced orders for 15 commercial jets during the first two days of the air show. Both carriers are dealing with a drop in orders as airlines struggle with declines in passengers. Boeing’s orders are worth nearly $800 million at list prices, though customers rarely pay those prices.</p>
<p>Air Algerie placed an order for seven 737-800s, Boeing said Tuesday. The carrier, based in Algeria, will have 22 Next-Generation 737s with the new order. Air Algerie, which has been a Boeing customer for 40 years, will receive its new 737s with blended winglets, curved wingtips that improve fuel efficiency.</p>
<p>“The 737-800 adds great value to our fleet because it is very high-tech and reliable,” said Abdelwahid Bouabdallah, chief executive of the carrier. “Reduced operating and maintenance costs mean our airplanes spend less time on the ground and more time in the air making money.”</p>
<p>Tassili Airlines, also based in Algeria, placed an order for four 737-800s on Tuesday. The airline is a subsidiary of government-owned Sonatrach Petroleum Corporation. Tassili will use the new 737s to transport employees and cargo between large Algerian cities and Sonatrach work sites.</p>
<p>“Tassili’s selection of the Boeing Next-Generation 737 is a testament to the airplane’s versatility, range and other performance factors,” said Marty Bentrott, Boeing’s sales vice president in the region. “We offered a comprehensive package to support its unique employee-transport needs, including spares, support equipment, ground-handling equipment, tooling and training.”</p>
<p>The new requests should bring Boeing’s year-to-date order tally to 95, provided Boeing doesn’t log in any new cancellations this week.</p>
<p>Airbus also announced an order for two A380s on Tuesday. The order came from Air Austral, based in Saint Denis, La Reunion, off the coast of Madagascar. The carrier will configure the superjumbo jet for 840 passengers.</p>
<p>Through the end of October, Airbus had recorded 123 net orders, not including new requests it picked up at the Dubai Air Show, which runs through the Thursday.</p>

<p>AeroSur (Bolivia) (Santa Cruz) added its first Boeing 747-400 on November 4, 2009 when ex-Virgin Atlantic Airways 747-443 G-VROM (msn 32339) was acquired as CP-2603. The type is now flying the Madrid route.</p>
