Die vorige inskrywing was ‘n inleiding gewees oor Meditasie as Geestelike Dissiplines. Vandag gaan ek so bietjie kyk na enkele misverstande wat Foster bespreek.

The first of the Inward Disciplines, that Richard Foster (in his book “Celebration of Discipline”) meantions, is meditation.(All quotes are taken from his book.) In the previus blog I gave a short introduction on Meditation as Spiritual Discipline. Today I am going to take a look at a few of the misconceptions that Foster discusses.

Meditation is often linked with Eastern religions. But “meditation has always stood as a crucial and central part of Christian devotion; a crucial preparation for and adjunct to the work of prayer.” The fact that there are so few “masters of contemplative prayer” might be seen as a major reason why there are such an rise in the interest in Eastern meditation.

Meditation are no foreign concept for the Biblical writers.

Genesis 24:63 – “[Isaac] went out to the field one evening to meditate,…”

Psalm 63:6 – “On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.”

(Some translations uses the words “meditate on thee/you”)

Psalm 119:148 – “My eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promises.”

These people were close to the heart of God. God spoke to them because they were willing to listen, not because they has special abilities.

The psalm which introduces the entire Psalms-book calls all people to emulate the man whose “delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night”, and even calls them blessed (Psalm 1:1-2).

“Christian writers throughout the centuries have spoken of a way of listening to God, of communing with the Creator of heaven and earth, of experiencing the Eternal Lover of the world.“

The Bible states that “On the Lord’s day [John] was in the Spirit” (Revelation 1:10), when he received his vision. It might just be that John was trained in a way of listening and seeing what we have forgotten.

In Psalm 119:78, the psalmist declares: “… I will meditate on your precepts.” So let us have the courage to side with biblical tradition and once again learn the “art of meditation”.

The question for now is this: Are you starting to think differently about meditation? In which ways are you busy changing your mind about meditation? In which ways do you still feel the same about meditation?

After reading this part, how will meditation help you to get closer to God? How will meditation help you focus on listening to God’s Word?

Hi! I want to apologize to anyone who might actually have followed the series, that I haven’t

Hi!

I want to apologize to anyone who might actually have followed the series, that I haven’t posted anything lately.
My laptop was stolen, together with my book.
I recently got a new laptop, and about two weeks time I found a copy of the book in a second-hand bookstore. I started reading again, and I can say that I still learn a lot from the book. As from tomorrow, if the Lord permits, the series will continue.

I hope you understand, and that you will continue exploring this series with me.

Vanaf more, as die Here dit toelaat, sal die reeks weer voortgaan.

The first of the Inward Disciplines, that Richard Foster (in his book “Celebration of Discipline”) meantions, is meditation.(All quotes are taken from his book.)

“In contemporary society our Adversary majors in three things: noise, hurry, and crowd. If he can keep us engaged in “muchness” and “manyness”, he will rest satisfied.”

If we ever want to move beyond the superficialities of our culture, which even includes our religious culture, we must be willing to start to rediscover the recreating silences, the inner world of contemplation.

The “masters of meditation” teaches that the universe is much larger than we know and that there are vast unexplored inner regions that are just as real as the physical world we know as well. They speak of exciting possibilities for new life and freedom.

It may seem strange to our modern ears, but we should without shame, “enrol as apprentices” in the school of contemplative prayer.

Before I go on, let me stop here, and ask some questions.

There are many people with many different thoughts and opinions about meditation.

What do you feel when you hear the word “meditation” and the term “contemplative prayer”?

What misconceptions do you think exist, regarding meditation?

How do you think the Spiritual Discipline of Meditation will help you get into a closer relationship with God?

How do you think will meditation help you to focus on God’s voice – His audible and written Word?

Watter misverstande dink jy bestaan aangaande meditasie?

Aanhaling:

“Things went badly for Britain from the beginning. It had more men and better weapons and was fielding its best generals. But the Boers were passionate in defending themselves, knew the land, had the support of much of the white population and adopted successful guerilla tactics that relied on stealth and speed. Britain’s enormous military superiority meant little on the ground, and the British commanders resorted to brutal tactics – burning down villages, herding civilians into concentration camps (the world’s first), sending more and more troops. Eventually Britain had 450 000 troops in southern Africa fighting a militia of 45 000.”

Die Multnomah prinses

A Father who loved his only child

A sacrifice foretold by a prophet

A life willingly given in love to save others

Missy se vrae

Did it really happen?

Is the Great Spirit another name for God?

Then how come he is so mean?

Will I ever have to jump off a cliff?

Will God ever ask me to jump off a cliff?

Groot vrae

Wat beteken dit as iets “waar” is?

Wie is God? Hoe praat ek oor God?

Wat maak ek met ‘n kwaai God?

Is God verantwoordelik vir my pyn?

Wat beteken dit as iets “waar” is?
Hoe lees ek die boek?

“ Whether some parts of it are actually true or not, I won’t be the judge. Suffice it to say that while some things may not be scientifically provable, they can still be true nonetheless” (p12)

“ Perhaps if some of it is not actually true in one sense, it is still true nonetheless-if you know what I mean. I guess you and Sarayu will have to figure that one out.” (p247)

Wie is God? Hoe praat ek oor God?

God pas nie in ons boksies nie:

– Am I supposed to believe that God is a big black woman with a questionable sense of humor?” (p88-89)

– “I’m not what you think I am” (p96)

– “I understand Jesus’ love, but God is another story”

– “They still play us off. Like good cop/bad cop most of the time, especially the religious folk”

God is daar in swaarkry (p173 – Moltmann)

God kan huil

Is God verantwoordelik vir my pyn?

Die maklike antwoorde:

Alles is God se wil

God toets ons

Daar is ‘n doel aan alles

Uitgangspunt: God is goed (p126)

Hierdie wêreld is ‘n rowwe plek (p165)

In the previous article I looked at the term “disciplines grace”, and also at two misleading ways toward inner transformation and healing: namely only human strivings versus no human strivings. The question could arise weather there are any dangers connected to the disciplines. In this article I want to look at a way of death (as Richard Foster names it): when the disciplines are turned into laws.

Ek haal steeds aan uit hoofstuk 1 [I’m still quoting from chapter 1]: The Spiritual Disciplines: Door to liberation.

Wet-gesentreerde Dissiplines bring net dood.

ʺThe Spiritual Disciplines are intended for out good. They are meant to bring the abundance of God into our lives. It is possible, however, to turn them into another set of soul-killing laws. Law-bound Disciplines breathe death.”

Jesus taught us that we should go further than the (self)righteousness of the Pharisees and the scribes. Look what He says in Matthew 5:20: “For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.” (NIV) Take note that their righteousness was nothing small. They were more committed to following God than many of us. But their righteousness were found in external factors, mostly in the manipulation of others. They way in which we show that our righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and teachers of the law, are seen in the level in which the inner workings of God are demonstrated in out hearts. The works are inward, but the results are outward (external).

As soon as the Disciplines degenerate into laws, it are used to manipulate and control people. We take explicit commands and use them to lock others into “prisons”. The result of this is pride and fear. Pride takes over, because we start to think that we are the right kind of people. Fear takes over, because the power to control others goes together with anxiety to lose control, as well as the anxiety to be controlled by others.

If we want to continue (and grow) in the spiritual walk, so that the Disciplines can be a blessing and not a curse, we have to get to a point where we don’t want to control others all the time. This need alone are perhaps the biggest thing to turn the Disciplines into laws. As soon as we have a law, we have an external measuringstick to judge others. Without laws,Disciplines stays an internal work and it is impossible to control others. As soon as we truly believe that the inward change is God’s work and not ours, we can stop trying to straighten others out.

How have you used things that are supposed for your spiritual growth, as laws with which to judge others?

Previously I looked at the Spiritual Disciples as those things that God gives so that we can get to a place where God can start to do things in our lives. Let’s take it futher, and talk about “the way of disciplined grace”.

Ek haal steeds aan uit hoofstuk 1 [I’m still quoting from chapter 1]: The Spiritual Disciplines: Door to liberation.

It is called “grace”, because it is free. It is “disciplined” because there is something for us to do. Dietrich Bonhoeffer writes in his book, The Cost of Discipleship, that grace is free, but that it is not cheap. We must understand that God’s grace is unearned and unearnable. If we expect to grow, we must take up a consciously chosen course of action involving both individual and group life. And that is the purpose of the Spiritual Disciplines.

The Disciplines of the spiritual life leads to the inner transformation and healing for which we seek. There are one of two possible misleading ways towards that transformation and healing (both of which doesn’t really work):

Heresy of moralism – The way of moral bankruptcy through human strivings for righteousness.

Heresy of antinomianism – The way of moral bankruptcy through the absence of human strivings.

Remember: The Disciplines does not produce the change. It only puts us in the place where the change can occur.

In the next part, I will look at the danger of turning the disciplines into laws, which are a way of death.

In the meantime, why don’t you look at that paragraph talking about “disciplined grace”? If you could, how would you explain the concept of “disciplined grace”? Do you think that there are an unhealthy leaning towards either “human strivings toward righteousness” or “the absence of human striving toward righteousness?”. Explain why you think that way, and also how it can be corrected – not only in the church*, but also in your own life.

*I’m writing church here with a lower case letter, because I want your thoughts about your specific congregation, not the Body of Christ, in which case I’d write it with a capital letter (i.e. “Church”)

Ek hoop dit werk vir julle so goed soos vir my! (Wel, ek sal eers kyk of dit regtig beter werk vir my.)

After the previous note, I took a vow to myself not to write a piece that are to big. From now on, I will try to keep the pieces that I write about the book I’m reading (Celebration of Discipline) as short as possible. I hope it works for you as well as it works for me! (Well, I’ll first see if it actually does work better for me.)

Ek haal steeds aan uit hoofstuk 1 [I’m still quoting from chapter 1]: The Spiritual Disciplines: Door to liberation.

We are so accustomed to think that sin are individual acts of disobedience against God. But the Bible teaches us that it is so much more. Paul writes about it, and especially in Romans. He describes it as a condition that plagues the whole human race. (Rom 3:9-18) “Sin as a condition works its way out through the “bodily members”, which is through the ingrained habits of the body (see Rom 7:5 and other places).

Paulus skryf veral daaroor in Romeine.

“Human striving [towards salvation] is insufficient and righteousness is a gift from God.” That doesn’t mean that we should get caught in the dilemma of either human works or idleness. “God has given us the Disciplines of the spiritual life as a means of receiving His grace. The Disciplines allow us to place ourselves before God so that He can transform us.”

In Galatians 6:8 Paul writes the following: “The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” A good – even not that good – farmer knows that he can not make the seed which he has sown to grow. He puts the seed is the ground, and then he lets nature take over so that the seed can grow. He knows that he is helpless to make the seed to grow.

The Spiritual Disciplines “are a way of sowing to the Spirit. The Disciplines are God’s way of getting us into the ground; they put us where something can be done. By themselves the Spiritual Disciples can do nothing; they can only get us to the place where something can be done. They are God’s means of grace. The inner righteousness we seek is not something that is poured on our heads. God has ordained the Disciplines of the spiritual life as the means by which we are placed where He can bless us.”

Next time we will look at the term “discipled grace”.

A while ago I started to share my experiences regarding my reading of the book by Ruchard Foster, Celebration of Discipline. I have worked on a few follow-up posts, but due to different reasons I just haven’t gotten around to posting the new posts. So my following to posts will be exactly the same as what I allready posted in regard with what I have posted previously.

Feel free to read it again and comment on it.

I do want to ask that, while you comment, you will be respectful of other peoples’ opinions and thought. No one are perfect, and the moment you think you are perfect, you stop learning and growing. (A tree that stops growing, eventually die.)

D’it het vir my gevoel soos so ‘n mors van tyd. Soveel moeite vir so min inligting?

(Dis beskikbaar by Loot.co.za vir slegs R82, of by Kalahari.net vir slegs R79. Bargain! Koop dit sommer vir jou hele kerkraad as ‘n middel-van-die-jaar kersgeskenk.)

Van Aarde, The Shack – natuurlik gaan daar meer as 20 mense wees.

William Skidelsky van The Guardian skryf:

This is also a novel that works on several levels. In one sense, it is a conventional crime caper, the story of an innocent man who gets sucked into a world that he doesn’t understand. In another, it is a critique of contemporary South Africa, a country that, as Galgut depicts it, is beset by cruelty and a spirit of brutish materialism.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2008/jun/22/fiction.reviews

Justin Cartwright van die Gardian skryf:

The conclusion about the white man’s place in this South Africa doesn’t quite follow Coetzee’s judgment that it is at best ambiguous and at worst irrelevant. It seems the white man is acceptable to provide the knowhow, the capital and the market for corruption. Napier discourses on the possibility of a private aesthetic as a refuge from these harsh realities: he might immerse himself in poetry, landscape and beauty. “He shied away from history . . . It seemed almost a duty.” Now history has caught up with him in the most brutal fashion. These ambivalent post-apartheid novels are often more interesting than the apartheid novels, in which the moral choices were fairly simplistic. The Impostor is a bleak but compelling book, set in a time of profound uncertainty.

Ek is in eksamentyd.

Today I actually made some time to read on in Celebration of Discipline. I’ am in exam-time. Isn’t it strange how a person have much of time, and suddenly everything happens in a small space of time? Well, here are the next part of my reading of this book.

Ek haal aan uit hoofstuk 1 [I’m quoting from chapter 1]: The Spiritual Disciplines: Door to liberation.

“Superficiality is the curse of our age. The doctrine of instant satisfaction is a primary spiritual problem. The desperate need today is not for a greater number of intelligent people, or gifted people, but for deep people.”

“The classical Disciplines of the spiritual life call us to move beyond surface living into the depths. They invite us to explore the inner caverns of the spiritual realm.”

Daar bestaan veral twee wanindrukke oor geestelike dissipines.

There are two misconceptions about spiritual disciplines.

The disciplines are not for “spiritual giants”. It’s also not exclusively for some spiritual leader.

“God intends the Disciplines of the spiritual life to be for ordinary human beings… If they are to have any transforming effect, the effect must be found in the ordinary junctures of human life.”

Spiritual disciplines shouldn’t be seen as a boring story that wants to take away happiness or laughter.

“Joy is the keystone of all the Disciplines. The purpose of the Disciplines is liberation from the stifling slavery to self-interest and fear… Singing, dancing, even shouting characterize the Disciplines of the spiritual life.”

The spiritual disciplines are, in a certain sense, not difficult (although it is difficult in another sense). The greatest requirement is a longing after God. Look what David says in Psalm 42:1-2: “As the dear pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?”

Those who has experienced the deep call to God and a deeper relationship with God, will experience two difficulties.

Filosofies / Philosophic

The material basis of the day has made it so easy to believe that we can’t move beyond the physical world. Meditation, as an example, are not seen as a contact with the real spiritual world, but are seen as psychological manipulation (if it is allowed!).

“Usually people will tolerate a brief dabbling in the ‘inward journey’, but then it is time to get on with real business in the real world.”

Even the best scientists, according to Foster, are beginning to realize that there are more than the material world [I’m wondering if there are scientist who would like to comment on this?].

“In intellectual honesty, we should be willing to study and explore this other realm with the rigor and determination we would give to any field of research.”

Prakties / Practical

We do not know how to go about exploring the inward life. It wasn’t always true. In the first century, and earlier, it wasn’t necessary to give instruction in spiritual disciplines. The Bible called people to disciplines such as fasting, meditation, worship and celebration, and gave no instruction on how it was to be done.

These disciplines were done so regularly, that it wasn’t necessary to give instruction in the “how to” of the actions. Today, instruction has to be giving in how to do the disciplines, precisely because it isn’t done that regularly anymore.

“One word of caution, however, must be given at the outset; to know the mechanics does not mean that we are practicing the discipline. The Spiritual Disciplines are an inward and spiritual reality and the inner attitude of the heart is far more crucial than the mechanics for coming into the reality of the spiritual life.”

What are your conceptions / thoughts about spiritual disciplines?Give your thoughtsm but please, don’t attack other people.

I’ll be writing in English and in Afrikaans… Please understand this, because I have Afrikaans friends who are not very good at English, and English friends who don’t understand Afrikaans…

I started this morning to read Richard Foster’s book Celebration of Discipline. David Watson writes the forward, and from the start it seems like a book that I would like to read well and thoughtful. I will read the book in throughout the next 3 or 4 weeks, “working” through it. Why don’t you come on a tour through the book with me? Read what I write, and share it with me (and hopefully us) wat you learn or would like to add.

In die voorwoord skryf David Watson die volgende [In the foreword, David Watson writes the following words]: “One of the clearest symptoms of this [Westerse Christenskap wat verswak het / Western Christianity became to weak to “compete” with Islam, Marxism and Third World Christianity] is the sad decline in true spirituality among the majority of Western Christians. We have neglected our prayer life; we have stopped listening to God; we have been caught by the covetous spirit of our affluent society, and worshipped the false god of materialism. We have exchanged our knowledge of Theos (God) for heady disputes about theological words, or for religious or social activism. We have forgotten how to be still before God, how to meditate, trapped as we are in the vortex of modern life. We have lost our sense of direction; and, confused and bewildered, we know little of the exuberant joy of celebration enjoyed by God’s people down the centuries, even in tough and depressing situations. There is little to attract the unbeliever in the traditional, organized Church.”

People have a hunger and a thirst for God or one or another form of spirituality, but the church as institution can’t provide it anymore. Thus people turn to cults, eastern mistism or occult practices, seeking spirituality, which can’t be found in the western church. Still, the true light of Christ will never be darkened.

Watson skryf ook hierdie merkwaardige en waar woorde [Watson also writes this remarkable and true words]: “If we noisy, busy and talkative Christians…” (is ons nie nogal besige Christene nie!?) “…could take some of the disciplines of this book seriously we could undoubtedly become much more effective disciples of Christ.”

As jy “dissipline” lees, wat is jou heel eerste gedagtes?

If you read the word “discipline” what are your first thoughts?

Do you think that we as Christians have to do things to get closer to God?

Dink jy daar is ‘n verskil tussen “goed doen om nader te kom aan God” en “goed doen as werke, sodat jy by God kan uitkom”? Wat is die verskil, volgens jou?

Do you think that there is a difference between “doing things to get closer to God” and “doing things as works, to get to God”? According to you, what are the difference?

In our hectic and busy lives, do you think there are a place for certain disciplines to make calm us down, so that we can focus on God, to hear Him communicate with us?
