One would normally ever think that a good looking rifle could be bought for this price, let alone a good looking rifle with a respectable scripting job and adjustable features.

Aesthetics
===========

Pulling the rifle out of the box gets you a very nice piece of primwork. Textures fit together and the few seams or prim changes you can see can only be seen at an extreme zoom. Even then, I was only able to notice any on the edges of the hand guards.

Even the small details on the model are primmed where appropriate (Fire selector, receiver extrusions, rails, scope details) and very few details I like to see primed were left textured, namely the vents in the fore grip.

The main thing that puzzled me with the model was which version of the AK5 it was. The original AK5 didn’t have a rail system or scope, the AK5B had its ironsights removed and scope added, the AK5C had a different rail system, and a very different foregrip, and the AK5D is much shorter (as it is the carbine version of the AK5C). However, being based on the FNC, the AK5 should surely be modified with FNC parts, so that’s no big deal. I’d call it a modified original, as if the optic and rail were removed, it would be the first AK5.

Attaching the gun places it nearly perfectly on my average height avatar. The animations, which inspection reveals are made by Tenaki Kupferberg, fit well and move together quite seamlessly from one to another (though that is also due to the animation scripts). Melee animation looks great, though the front hand slips off the rifle, though I am left wondering if, in real life, a skeletonized stock would hurt enough…not going to argue though.

The AK5’s one purely aesthetic feature is the Optic, which can be removed and attached at will, through the menu or verbal commands. One thing I did notice with the scope however, is that the sound, and presumably function, triggers regardless of scope state. If the scope is on, and I insert the command to put the scope on, it will still make the sound as if I am putting it on. Not a major issue in itself, but something I would have expected to have been covered in such an upper market rifle from such a renowned company.

The silencer is more than aesthetic on the Titan AK5. Unlike many silencers in SL, which simple change the sound and turn off the muzzle flash, the AK5’s silencer, when equipped, causes the rifle to fire alpha’ed bullets. While this is a very and unique feature, I am curious how effective it would be on the battlefield, as in SL, tracer rounds are almost always required as you cant use the optics or sights on the gun. What pleases me most, is that they mention that the alpha’ed rounds may not be allowed in all sims in the manual. While I could be reading too far into this, but it shows that the manual writer (Anlysia Gregoire by notecard creator) shows some concern for sims like New Jessie, where people would get in trouble for using the alpha’ed bullets. The silencer suffers from the same issue with sounds that the optic does. I also ran across another odd bug, as once when I drew the rifle the silencer was suddenly on, and not just in visuals, but all the sounds and bullets too. I detached the gun and reattached it, and the silencer had detached itself.

The muzzle flash of the AK5 is another interesting piece. It’s a one prim sculpt with a spiral twist to it, and has a very nice texture. the one thing I noticed with it however, is that it tries to pulse with every shot, and often falls out of since with the firing sound. While not a huge issue, having a muzzle flash that animates a texture, or simply stays on while firing full auto, could make it look a bit better. While I prefer no muzzle flash as they are not realistic, it is worth mentioning, that I only turned “Show Avatar In Mouselook” on to view the muzzle flash, and do not normally see it while fighting.

Sounds vary. The unsilenced fire sound is good, though I think it would sound better if it didn’t use the llTriggerSound system it sounds like it uses. The silenced sound sounds familiar, and I think it has been used before in some projects.

Performance
===========

All Combat Testing was done on Default Settings

The performance of the AK5 didn’t quite match up to its good looks. While far from poor, the AK5’s performance could stand some improvement. During combat at New Jessie, the AK5’s performance was influenced more-so by lag than other weapons I have used, though this is, again, not bad. When spikes would occur, the AK5’s rate of fire would seem to slow drastically, and bullets did not see to rez. Sometimes during the spikes, the fire sound would sound like it was going on a roller coaster of speed, and then all of a sudden the gun would blech out all the bullets it sounded like it was firing. Reload time was also affected by lag, and it seemed that the gun would struggle to regain controls to fire ( I am assuming from the Stop hand I got while clicking during reload that the gun releases controls during its reload cycle) Script time testing was also a bit lower than my expectations, as it registered an average of almost double of the ENIC 08M I tested a few days prior during full auto fire (AK5 averaged 0.431ms. Type 08M averaged 0.236ms). ** As a note, I retested the Type 08M after Testing the AK5, and it is also worth noting that I have no scripted objects on aside from the gun.

However, to say the AK5 is without its positive sides would not only be unfair, but would make me a damn liar.

The AK5, when not under the load of lag, always shot clean and the spread feature preformed wonderfully, and gave a sense of realism fixed rez slaves and random offsets can only dream about! It gives spraying for covering fire a whole new meaning, and actually ads feasibility to ranged fire, as the bullets spread out as they go, rather than when they rez. Excellent for anyone who looks for realism.

I also never had the bullets lock up when the rezzed. Granted, where other bullets may have locked up, the AK5’s didn’t seem to rez at all, but it prevented me from surely killing myself.

Perhaps my favorite combat experience with the AK5 was when someone was driving a jeep around the roads. I ran up to it as they were trying to turn into me, hit the melee combo keys, killed the driver…and hijacked the jeep. At first I didn’t think the gun would work after the jeep taking controls, but I was quite wrong. I killed myself because of the rez distance, but increased that with a few quick keystrokes and managed to pull off a few drive-bys in my newly “acquired” spoils of war. Unfortunately…street-cred in a old Willy’s style Jeep while doing drive-by’s with a Swedish assault rifle isn’t very good, but you will certainly show all the gangsta’s with their 9×19’s what a bullet truly is. And don’t worry.. the will know because the AK5’s bullet has the caliber in its name, which I greatly enjoy seeing over just “damage” or “bullet damage” ect.

The adjustable parts of the weapon all work as advertised and work well, I changed them up to test them, but during combat I kept it to the defaults, and aside from my jeep escapade, never felt the need to change them. The adjustable rate of fire seems like an odd thing to included, as the cyclic rate of the AK5 is between 650 and 700 rounds per minute, but I know that features can often make the sale. However, the realism of the spread at the default rate of fire could make the sale in and of itself.

Other
===========

Other features of the AK5 are clever and unique, specifically the “paintball” bullet type. Unlike a normal training bullet, the paintball bullet rezzes a splatter effect approximately where they hit, so while you can do target practice with any bullet, the paintball bullet will provide a bit more feedback, and therefore, a bit more usefulness.

The adjustable mag size, unlike much older titan weapons and other weapons with user input based magazine size, has a hard upper limit of 100 rounds. The reload time also increases with bullet count, so

The adjustable spread, while it has a hard limit at 10m of spread at 100M of distance, is only useful up to a certain range. At a spread setting of 10, I could barely hit the armory wall from the other end. I’d say anything over 3m of spread is nearly useless, and that the default 2 is probably the best.

The menu, which can be turned off if you don’t like touch menus, does add a nice touch, but I do use verbal commands before them, though I use the melee and the reload combos more than anything. Perhaps my favorite area of the menu is the Defaults menu, where with the click of a button you can reset any of the adjustable options to its default value. Only thing about the menu I don’t understand, is why all caps?

Overall
===========

The Titan AK5 is a solid gun, though not without its flaws. It’s a very good looker, getting near top marks in build and texture areas for its balance of prim vs texture detail and its realistic textures that contribute to its overall build quality. Animations are top notch, and only a few minor hitches prevent a 5 flag rating. Sounds are good, but the glitches and overly familiar silenced fire take away from it. The gun is a bit daunting to use at first, as the manual is massive and some commands are strange. But combined with the menu, the weapon is quite easy to use and gets a 4 flag rating. You don’t even need to read the manual if you don’t care about the adjustments, as all the traditional commands (“auto”, “semi”, “damage” “draw”,”reload” ect) are present. Value for the combat minded is a bit lower than average at three flags, but the wonderful spread, as well as the good looks and solid build, help keep the value average even with the price tag.

All in all, a great looking gun with features as unique as the Bofors AK5 is to Second Life which is brought down mainly by its average performance and rough handling in lag.

Visste ni att man i Indien associerar namnet Bofors med något som är paj, kaputt eller helt enkelt genomruttet? Det svenska vapenföretaget har blivit ett eget begrepp och ett adjektiv för att beskriva något som är dåligt. Orsaken är så klart Boforsaffären och mutskandalerna som den innebar.

Nu har Sverige och Indien åter tecknat ett samarbetsavtal på försvarsområdet. Förra gången det hände var 1986, med ett avtal som på bilateral väg, och med dåvarande regerings goda minne, i klartext åsidosatte det svenska regelverket. Endast ett FN-embargo skulle stoppa framtida leveranser.

Vissa lärdomar har dragits sedan dess. Avtalet ska t ex gå att bryta. Men en, ofta bortglömd fråga, är vilken regional kontext det är vi exporterar vapen till. Relationen mellan Indien-Kashmir-Pakistan är exempelvis av central vikt för utvecklingen och stabiliteten i Afghanistan.

Annat som kan vara intressant att veta är att Indien är världens näst största vapenimportör efter Kina. Vi säljer granatgeväret Carl Gustav och pansarskottet AT4 dit. Och haubitsar. Och kanske snart även Jas Gripen. Lägg till detta affärer i miljardklassen med Pakistan. Lite ironiserande kan man ju fråga sig om det är detta som är essensen av att vara neutral?

Avtalet är ett glasklart försök från regeringens sida att agera språngbräda för fler Boforskanoner och nya stridsflygaffärer till en region som satsar stora summor på upprustningen varje år. Hu!

Sonen var idag på provspel för Bofors hockeygymnasium i Karlskoga. Det gick väl sådär. Inte alls så stabilt och vältajmat som det brukar vara. Felskär eller fall i flera moment. Det var först efter några byten i internmatchen om 2×20 minuter som man började känna igen honom. Då var han bergsäker med pucken i egen zon, vände lätt bort forecheckande forwards och slog både enkla crosspassningar i egen zon som öppnande uppspel i mittzon. Att han varit sjuk påverkar säkert. De senaste tre veckorna har det bara blivit fyra träningar och en match när det borde ha varit 14 träningar och fyra matcher. Självklart sätter det ned förmågan en hel del.

På vägen hem slog det mig att den ihängande hostan kanske var problemet. För att lindra denna under provspelningen fick han en timma i förväg en tablett av hostmedicinen Noskapin. Väl hemma igen startar jag datorn och surfar in på Patient FASS. Där kan man läsa följande om Noskapin:

Vanliga biverkningar: Huvudvärk, dåsighet

Dåsighet! Låter knappast som rätt preparat att ha i kroppen när man i fart skall balansera på några centimeter stål och samtidigt ha koll på puck samt med- och motspelare. Det blir inget sådant i Växjö på måndag. Koffeintabletter?

Upp 05.30 imorgon och iväg 06.30 mot Karlskoga för ny hockeygymnasie try-out för sonen. Hoppas att min förkylning inte blir värre för då kan det bli jobbigt att köra. Sonen har bara lite hosta kvar men en halsinfektion har gjort att han bara gjort fem riktiga träningspass och en match på de senaste två veckorna. Normalt sett hade det varit tio-tolv träningar och två-tre matcher. Det skall i alla fall bli intressant att se vilket upplägg Bofors har på sin try-out och vilken nivå det är på spelarna på denna. Räknade ut att sonen nu skall på fyra try-outs på tolv dagar. Han börjar få viss vana vid det ny och det tar sannolikt bort viss nervositet. Fortsättning följer.

I was told that in history, certain events occur that galvanize a nation to be one. I was also told that once a wrong has been exposed in the system, that system begins its process of transformation. However, all these things may not apply to India. This is taking into account three events, one being the Tabling of the Liberhan report, the other being the anniversary of 26/11 and the Madhu Koda scam. All these events have taken place in the past one week, with the first one happening today.

Now, the first and the second are closely inter-related and go well with the colonial mindset that still dominates our thinking. In about two days from now, it will be the anniversary of the Mumbai terror attacks. A shcoking incident in which 10 people terrorized the city and the citizens for 62 hours. Co-incidentally, you have the ‘leaking’ of the Liberhan report and the tabling the next day.

If you look at it, at the surface, it does look theatrical. However, one influential person I spoke to told me that this is the ploy of the Congress. It is a deliberate ploy to confuse, muddle, move on and impose their will on the population which anyway does not care what goes in Parliament. Some analysts and media houses say that the deliberate ‘leaking’ of the Liberhan report would throw a lifeline to the BJP, who are struggling with internal strife.

So, in our country, an event which is meant to galvanize a population fed up with their problems is now balanced by an event that has proven to be devisive both in mind and soul of every Indian. Babri Masjid remains a contention that has always threatened to have polarizing effects. Now, only time will tell whether or not Polarization in this nation is complete. Prasoon Joshi might write ‘Is Baar nahin’, but unless and until we, the people, seriously come out in numbers and say ‘Is baar nahin’, only then a first step will be taken.

By the way, it has been 17 years since Ayodhya. Do ordinary people in the heartland and in urban areas care whether a temple or a mosuqe is built? Do Atheists still have the belief that Ayodhya is the prime example of religion shedding more blood and it is better that Atheism prevails rather than fascist religions that are hell bent on irrationality? Politicians have already started bickering. Amar Singh of the SP states on Camera that Ram dwells in my heart as well. The Communists have rubbished the report, while excerpts of the Action report have stated that the government will only take necessary action.

The final phase ‘will take necessary action’ has been the bone of contention in Indian politics. If necessary action is taken, it is steamrolled into submission by an inefficient Bureaucracy, a laggard judiciary and a confused media. The lack of unity has been spoken about in detail. Now, I will highlight the lack of Spine that our Indian institutions are blessed with. I am throwing some numbers and the scams that have taken place:

SNC Lavalin scam: Rs 300 cr

Orissa Mining scam: Rs 50000 cr

Telgi Scam: Rs 30000 cr

Spectrum Scam: Rs 60000 cr

Bofors Scam: Rs 650 cr

Grand Total: 142000 crore

142000 crore! That is almost 1000 times our GDP. Can we imagine if this money was not laundered in a scam, we could have had multiple lane highways that can rival that of the US and Germanyas far as quality and quantity are concerned. This amount would have helped set up schools in more than 600 districts across the country and that too in every village. This amount of money could have been invested in clean energy like Solar and Wind. This money could have improved Infrastructure, namely electricity, buildings and Public Transport system across the length and breadth of the country. The availability of this money would have reduced the gap significantly between the earnings of Urban and Rural, which according to government data today stands at 1:20. Meaning if one person in the city earns 10000 a month, a person in the rural areas earns only Rs 500 for the month.

Yet, somewhere now anytime, a scam has been concotted. Either the system is too rigid which leads to such scams of such magnitude, or the basic conscience of the power wielders are corrupted beyind recognition. If India lags behind every nation, it is because our mindset has been allowed to become divisive. There is no Unity and Spine among the population as well as the power wielders.

Absence of Unity and Spine means it is the absence of ‘us’ as a people. Scams will continue, no one will rasie a voice. If it is raised, cultural barriers are setup and one will ponder about how it is to be done perfectly. Somewhere, the solution may lie, but knowing us, we will only muddle it furthur. Only things sutaining is hope, but somehow, that feels empty without any concrete action.

Heino-Lindberg håller nollan…

AIK tog ju som bekant en fin skalp borta mot Bofors igår. Grabbarna lyckades vinna med 2 – 0 och Heino-Lindberg höll nollan för andra matchen i rad. Mer om matchen finns att läsa om Du klickar HÄR. Undertecknad tycker att det börjar se betydligt ljusare ut nu än för bara några veckor sedan. Att hålla nollan mot Borås och Bofors är riktigt stabilt och förhoppningsvis så har detta stärkt grabbarna inför matchen mot Växjö Lakers på Söndag.

#15 Jan Huokko i AIK, säsongen 2002/2003.

Har för övrigt noterat att Jan Huokko lägger av p.g.a. en svårartad knäskada. Detta är givetvis beklagligt för Jannes räkning men som AIK:are såhoppas jag att detta blir ett stort avbräck för Leksands IF. Säga vad man vill om Janne men det är nog inte ishockeykarriären han kommer bli ihågkommen för. Ingen som är någorlunda insatt i hockeyn kunde undgå det rabalder som blev då några privata mms-filmer läckte ut där Janne lekte lite väl avancerat med en dildo, uppföljt av det sköna psyk-krig som utspelades varje gång AIK mötte Leksand.

Som motvikt till all denna “Dildo-Janne-hets” så vill jag lyfta fram att Jan Huokko spelade i AIK säsongerna 01/02 och 02/03 och att Huokko faktiskt var en av få spelare som STANNADE KVAR I AIK efter att vi hade åkt ur Elitserien. Tyvärr så är det lätt för många att glömma bort sådant. I AIK:s tröja så spelade Janne 81 matcher och svarade då för 17 mål och 23 assist.

Vad Du än gör i livet Janne så lycka till, men håll bättre koll på mobiltelefonen i fortsättningen…

Studsade just till utav det här reportaget i veckans Fokus: Svenska vapen är deras vardag, som beskriver åtta röster som på olika sätt påverkats av den svenska vapenexporten. Jag hoppas särskilt att någon på Jobbkongressen snubblar över det här och läser.

AT4 och Carl Gustav, som nämns i artikeln, är några av Sveriges största exportframgångar på vapenområdet. Flechetteammunitionen (som tillhör Carl Gustav) kan bäst beskrivas som ett pilregn som sprids när den exploderar, och liknas i reportaget vid “en köttkvarn”.

2006 var jag i Indien.  Detta skrev jag ang. ett möte jag hade på ett tåg under min resa :

A Neutral Country is one that doesn’t take a stand for either side in a war.

Sweden has supposedly not taken a stand since early 19th century (1814) and the end of the Napoleonic Wars.

Some are proud of that.
Others shameful.
Most of us are not so sure.

Which reminds me of the following:

India, 2006.

A train between Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram (wow, those are 18 letters!) in the very south of the big country.

26 hours ahead of us.

A second class wagon and a cabin shared by four.

We were two europeans, – they were two well dressed, middle aged, indian men. We were all acting politely, speaking our languages in low voices not to disturb eachother. One of the indians almost  immediately climbed up to his bed to sleep the long journey away while the other stayed in front of us reading a book. I recall it being the Bill Clinton autobiography ”My life” of 2004, the english original version. Obviously this man was educated and had a political interest. It was the rain season, -the monsoon-, and the India rushing by outside our window was dressed in all shades of green. We were fascinated by its scenary although the airconditioning and silence made it seem unreal. After a couple of hours we were served  food (and what a delicious, spicy food it was!) The educated man layed down his book to eat and so our polite chit chat began:

He said he was originally from Kerala where we were heading but that he came to Mumbai once in a while in business.

He talked about his beautiful country and then wanted to know where I was from.

- Sweden?, he lowered his face thinking; Sweden, Sweeeden….. Sweden?
Then he smiled at me bigger than ever.

- Ah, Sweden! Of course, how very stupid of me to forget. Bofors!, he said, making a positive thumb up gesture.
- Very good guns! Carl Gustaf! Your weapons helped us alot during the Kashmir Conflict! Do you know about that conflict?
I think I was blushing when I confirmed his question:
Yes, I knew about that conflict.
And then he said it again, smiling as to say we were friends.
Or should I say allies?

- Very good guns indeed!

How do one respond to that?

With a “thank you” or an “I am sorry?”

So much for that neutrality.

La ‘’storia infinita” del processo in India per presunte tangenti pagate dalla societa’ svedese Bofors all’imprenditore italiano Ottavio Quattrocchi sembra giunta al suo ultimo capitolo perche’ il governo indiano ha comunicato oggi alla Corte suprema di New Delhi di aver deciso di ritirare ogni denuncia. Lo riferiscono i media a New Delhi. Dopo 20 anni di vicende giudiziarie arricchite da mandati di cattura internazionali e memorie difensive di Quattrocchi, la Procura generale dello Stato ha comunicato alla Corte che gli sforzi per ottenere l’estradizione dell’imputato, accusato di aver intascato tangenti per 650 milioni di rupie (oggi nove milioni di euro), sono falliti. Il 30 aprile scorso un funzionario dell’Ufficio centrale della polizia investigativa (Cbi) aveva avvertito i giudici indiani che dopo 12 anni la nota riguardante Quattrocchi, che appariva nella sezione ‘Red Corner Notice’ dell’Interpol era stata rimossa, a quanto pare su richiesta della Procura generale indiana. In quella occasione il Cbi aveva chiesto alcuni mesi per studiare un possibile rilancio dell’inchiesta che pero’ non e’ stato possibile materializzare. Quattrocchi, amico personale di Sonia Gandhi e del marito Rajiv, ha sempre respinto ogni addebito. Cio’ non ha impedito che egli sia stato al centro dalla meta’ degli anni ‘80 di uno degli scandali che piu’ hanno segnato l’India e che nel 1989 fece perdere le elezioni al Partito del Congresso, dopo 40 anni di continuo governo. Fuggito dall’India nel 1993, per due volte il governo indiano ha tentato di ottenerne l’estradizione – prima dalla Malaysia, poi dall’Argentina – senza successo.

Pseudodiskussionen om vapenexport till Venezuela fortsätter. Inspektionen för strategiska produkter (ISP), den myndighet som bär högsta ansvaret för att vi exporterar vapen till krigsförbrytare som Obama och tyranner som Saudiarabiens kung Abdullah, säger att Venezuela inte skulle få köpa svenska vapen om de ville. Inte för att landet ockuperar två länder och stödjer en 60-årig apartheidstat eller för att man bedriver könsapartheid, hugger halsen av folk och torterar politiska fångar – tro det eller ej Venezuela sysslar inte med sådant. Nej, utan för att Colombia säger sig ha hittat 20 år gamla venezolanska vapen hos Farc-gerillan. Samtidigt gav Sverige år 2008 klartecken för vapenexport till Uribes förbrytarregering i Colombia. Så här beskriver Fredsbloggen en debatt om exporten med ISP:s generaldirektör Andreas Ekman för några veckor sedan:

“I en annan rond var det Andreas Ekman som ivrigt försvarade vapenexporten, vilket var lite märkligt när han samtidigt som generaldirektör för ISP är den som ska se till att riktlinjerna för vapenexporten, som av dess försvarare anses restriktiva, följs. Andreas lyfte dock fram att det inte finns något förbud mot vapenexport utan att det är mer som med körkort, att får du tillstånd från ISP så är det ok att exportera, även till tvivelaktiga stater som Saudiarabien och Pakistan. På frågan varför försvarade sig Andreas med att det utgör en så liten andel av den svenska vapenexporten.”

Så vapenexport till Colombias regering som tillsammans med högerns paramilitär bär huvudansvaret för den katastrofala situationen med försvinnanden, tortyr, massakrer och miljoner internflyktingar är okej. Vapenexport till Saudiarabien som hugger händerna av småtjuvar, stenar kvinnor, avrättar politiska fångar genom halshuggning, torterar och förtrycker är okej. Vapenexport till USA som bär ansvaret för över en miljon irakiers död de senaste sex åren och till Pakistan som drivit miljoner fattiga människor till flykt under dess meningslösa försök att krossa talibanerna militärt i Swatdalen är också okej. Men att 20 år gamla venezolanska vapen påstås ha hittats hos Farc räcker för att stoppa vapenexport till Venezuela. Partiska påståenden om att Chavéz – och inte 80-talets regeringar – kanske kanske skickat vapen till Farc väger alltså tyngre än det absoluta faktum att USA bevisligen skjuter ihjäl irakier och afghaner med svenska vapen. När ska Sverige sluta med hyckleriet och sätta stopp för all vapenexport, oavsett om det är till Venezuela, Colombia, Saudiarabien eller USA?

De svenska medierna har nu dragit igång en pseudodiskussion kring vapenexport till just Venezuela, sedan Colombia hävdat att svenska Boforsvapen hittats hos Farc-gerillan. Problemet här är inte att Svenska Freds kräver ett slut på vapenexport till Venezuela, det är bara naturligt då de som fredsrörelse krävt ett slut på vapenexport till många länder. Personligen vill jag ju se ett totalt stopp för vapentillverkning och försäljning på svensk mark. Vapenindustrin borde vara lika olaglig som narkotikaindustrin. Det är också en pseudodiskussion på grund av att de venezolanska vapnen i fråga är från 80-talet och att Sverige sedan 2006 inte exporterar vapen till Venezuela. Då undrar man vad det är frågan om.

Ändå blåser SvD upp Svenska freds utalanden om att “Venezuela har kränkt de mänskliga rättigheterna under en lång tid. Situationen i området har varit instabil under flera decennier” medan man bara i förbifarten nämner kritiken om Colombia. Förvisso nämner man organisationens uttalande att “Colombia är det land i världen som har flest internflyktingar efter Sudan”, men utan att nämna statens ansvar. Sanningen är att Svenska Freds och fredsrörelsen i stort fört en kampanj för att förhindra vapenexport till Colombias regering, som man just håller ansvarig för den katastrofala situationen för internflyktingarna.

För det finns lika många amerikansk-colombianska anklagelser att Chavéz beväpnar Farc som det finns bevis för regeringen Uribes samarbete med högerns paramilitärer. Vapen som ges till Colombia hamnar med stor risk i slutändan hos paramilitären, det står mycket säkrare  klarlagt än att vapen till Venezuela hamnar hos Farc. Att förminska detta i rapporteringen och inte vara tydlig med att Sverige i praktiken faktiskt inte har någon vapenexport till Venezuela – och knappast tänker återuppta den så länge Chavéz är president – är bara ohederligt.

De senaste dagarnas rapportering om att pansarvapen från Bofors nått FARC-gerillan (eventuellt via Venezuela) är ytterst besynnerlig. Rent hysterisk.

Om Sverige kan skeppa vapen och annan krigsutrustning en masse till länder som både anfaller, ockuperar och begår systematiska krigsförbrytelser (Förenta Staterna och Storbritannien) så vad är problemet med att sälja till en gerilla? Det normala är ju att det är fina grejer att exportera JAS och artilleripjäser – är det något fel på dessa varor, eller? Var stolt svensk vapenhantverkare för fasen!

Någon journalist får väldigt gärna förklara för mig.

How ever what I find more interesting is the fact that ongoing attempt on a debate is started by the NGO Ofog which haven´t recieved proper attention to their arguments. Martin Smedjeback in court concludes that this is a self-defense reaction to a unbearable situation (referring to the swedish arms export to countries as South Africa and the ongoing negotiations with India) for the people who either gets killed directly by the sold arms or, more important, the ones who indirectly dies due to lack of tax-money to fight poverty.

The argumentation is interesting as he do find support in the swedish law for his actions and I remain stunned that only a few have raised their voice on the topic in our neutral, peace hugging, country Sweden. Silence is certainly not a way of handling these issues and we have our history to look back upon. Or are we actually proud of the expression, coined during the WWII, “En svensk tiger*” (A swede remains silent).

*It´s actually a game of words implying that a swedish person is a tiger by remaining mute, or at least playing with the thought.

Frys vapenexporten till Venezuela!

Efter att pansarskott som sålts från Saab till Venezuela förmedlats vidare till Farc-gerillan i Colombia kräver Svenska Freds att vapenexporten till Venezuela omedelbart avbryts.

Vapenexporten till Venezuela måste nu omedelbart upphöra tillsvidare och en offentlig utredning måste granska HUR i hela världen vidareexporten till Colombia kunde ske. Utöver detta bör en granskning genomföras för att utreda om, och i så fall på vilket sätt, de svenska vapnen har använts i det colombianska inbördeskriget.

Säljer man vapen till en så instabil region kan man tyvärr inte vänta sig något annat, är jag rädd för.

Enligt riksdagens riktlinjer ska vapenexport till ett land som underlåtit att förhindra vidareexport av svensk krigsmateriel “i princip inte komma i fråga” så länge omständigheterna kvarstår.

Riktlinjerna är mycket klara på den här punkten. Denna specificering tillkom efter Bofors smuggelaffärer på 1980-talet. Tills alla omständigheter har klarlagts bör därför all vapenexport, även följdleveranser, vara utesluten till Venezuela.

Sverige har under 2000-talet sålt krigsmateriel till Venezuela för 474 miljoner kr. Saab Bofors Dynamics har identifierat vapnen och det visar sig att de härrör från en leverans som genomfördes på 1980-talet. Då kanske det inte är så farligt, kanske en del tänker. Det är ju en gammal leverans.

Jag är snarare ganska övertygad om att även de leveranser som sker idag till känsliga och instabila regioner kommer att ge liknande situationer i framtiden. Därför måste exporten stoppas omedelbart. Inte minst med tanke på att exporten av reservdelar (följdleveranser) fortsätter trots att den ursprungliga affären genomfördes för kanske mer än 20 år sedan.

In practice firing rates were closer to 80–100 rpm as the rounds were fed into the breech from four round clips which had to be replaced by hand. The maximum attainable ceiling was 7,200 m (23,600 ft ), but the practical maximum was about 3,800 m (12,500 ft).

The L/60 Bofors continue to be the main armament of the Kingston class coastal defence vessel, although the navy is in the midst of a search for a suitable replacement.

The Bofors is not just another scandal and it is not about just Rs. 64 Crores. There are reasons that the scandal doesn’t stay buried. It is about betrayal of faith people had in Mr.Clean Rajiv Gandhi.
He shattered hope he gave to Indian public of getting rid of power brokers.

The Hindu published documents showing how Bofors and Mr. Rajiv Gandhi – then Prime Minister of India, tried to cover up the bribe takers in the Bofors scandal. But after initial publication it stopped publishing the documents succumbing to the pressure from the brokers and politicians involved in the scandal and more importantly to protect its advertising revenue from the Government of India. The Hindu subsequently started publishing articles that covered for the brokers and politicians tainted in the scandal.

A lie about Extradition treaty between Argentina and India

The Hindu on March 2nd, 2007 reported that no formal extradition treaty existed between India and Argentina when the Prime accused in Bofors scandal Mr Quattrocchi was known to be residing in Argentina.

The former deputy prime minister was of the opinion that extradition treaty was in force between the two countries which was also reported in the Hindu. Moreover analysts point out the following regarding extradition treaty between the two countries.

1. In 1956, the first Prime Minister of India, late Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, had supplied a list of 45 countries with which India had established extradition treaties. Argentina was at number 2 alphabetically in that list.
2. The Extradition Act, 1962 further, in clause 2 (d) explicitly defined “extradition treaty” to include treaties which had been entered into before 15 August, 1947.
3. Thirdly, the United Nations document reaffirms that the extradition treaties that had been entered into by the then Government of India before 15 August, 1947 continue to hold after that date as India is the successor State.
4. Finally, as per a publication of the Ministry of Home Affairs, CBI – “Countries with whom we have pre-Independence Treaties are still valid according to our law”, Argentina is again listed at number 2.

Why Hindu should conclude and include a lie about extradition treaty in its report?. Is it to make the people believe that although our Government is capable of capturing this culprit, he escaped because of the legal hurdles!

This time, Rajiv Gandhi may be in real trouble. His problem is an arms-sale scandal that first came to light in 1987, when it was alleged that a Swedish manufacturer, Bofors, had bribed Indian politicians and government officials in order to obtain a $1.4 billion contract for field artillery. Back then, the Indian prime minister hunkered down and rode out the storm, as he had done in previous scandals. But last week an independent Indian newspaper, The Hindu, began to print documents suggesting that Gandhi’s administration and Bofors had engaged in an extensive cover-up to conceal the identities of some bribe-takers. With a national election due before the end of the year, many Indians are referring to the scandal as Rajiv Gandhi’s Watergate.

After publishing its first installment on the new charges, The Hindu suddenly dropped the subject. The paper’s associate editor, Narasimhan Ram, 45, walked out of the building and accused the editor, his uncle, of spiking subsequent stories in response to government pressure, including personal requests to drop the story and the withdrawal of official advertising. The uncle denied the charge. But Ram showed the suppressed documents containing cover-up details to other Indian newspapers as well as to Newsweek.

Previously, Gandhi insisted that he never asked Bofors to act through middlemen or pay commissions on the arms deal. The Hindu’s documents show that Bofors did pay kickbacks, most of them through a Swiss-registered company called Moresco. Ram said the documents would help Indian investigators trace the people behind Moresco. There is a widespread belief in the Indian press that those people may include relatives of Gandhi. Whatever the truth of the matter, the government’s apparent cloaking of the scandal can only hurt Gandhi with the voters.

NEW DELHI : Rejecting the government’s statement that India had no extradition treaty with Argentina, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday said there was such an agreement between the two countries and accused the government of “lying” over the Quattrocchi issue.

“An extradition treaty was signed by the British government [before India's independence] with Argentina, which still survives,” the former Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani told a news conference here.

His comments came in the wake of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s remarks that India would hold talks with Argentina for extradition of Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi because both countries have no extradition pact.

“The government avers that there is no extradition treaty with Argentina. Not correct. There is an extradition treaty,” Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Jaswant Singh, also a former External Affairs Minister, said.

Both the BJP leaders also came out with a joint statement, accusing the government of lying over Quattrocchi’s detention in Argentina.

“Agencies of the government have put out that they were “pre-occupied with translations” for all of 17 days [when he was detained]. Incorrect. All communications from our missions are always in English. This is a dishonest plea. Besides, if there was any direct Interpol message to the CBI, in Spanish, it would need no more than an hour to translate,” they said in their statement.

The BJP leaders demanded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh explain to the country why information about Quattrocchi’s detention remained in wraps for over a fortnight.

Mr. Advani and Mr. Singh asked: “Why? To protect whom? And for what purpose? Why then was information about Quattrocchi’s confinement deliberately kept away even from the Supreme Court, when a related matter came up in the court on February 12? And why did the CBI counsel keep asserting that `nothing has remained in the case’?”

They also alleged they were prevented from voicing their objections in the House over the conduct of the government on Quattrocchi’s detention.

Mr. Advani, who denied that the Opposition went too far in its protest over the Quattrocchi event while the Rail Budget was being presented, said it had already requested that it should be allowed to raise the matter as soon as the House assembled for the day on Monday.

The Opposition, he added, had also suggested that the Rail Budget be laid on the table in order to prevent uproar over Quattrocchi’s detention.

“The country, our citizens, Parliament demand answers. The Prime Minister must candidly and comprehensively explain his conduct [over the Quattrocchi row],” they said.

The BJP leaders, however, rejected charges that the NDA too was not able to secure extradition of Quattrocchi from Malaysia when it was in power, insisting that the then government did pursue the case with Kuala Lumpur, with which New Delhi had no extradition treaty.

“The country would be happy if the financial beneficiaries [of the Bofors kickbacks] are brought to book,” Mr. Advani said.

He, however, insisted that there would be no chaos in the House during the general budget. — PTI

According to the membership records of the Italian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (IPEVCA), Massimo owns a company called ci partners in Milan, which provides consultancy services to mncs to help them establish commercial presence in different countries. The records state that CI partners has in depth knowledge of international markets, especially India, and that it has an office in Bangalore.

The fact that Quattrocchi Jr chooses to do business in a country where there is a court case, a non-bailable arrest warrant and several litigations pending against his father is remarkable. It is also remarkable that he left the country just a day before news of his father’s arrest in Argentina became public knowledge.
