At least it looks hot here. Or romantic. Or whatever.

I have put up my life with manga having problems with art, but it’s quite bothering to know that the art of Bokura ga Ita is terrible. It isn’t detailed. It’s trademark only goes for the eyes, and it isn’t great at all. I was going to look further in the other volumes to see if it improved, but no, it was that bad that I forgot.

The plot in volume 1 is quite… interesting. It takes back the negativity of the art, however, it isn’t enough to do so. Regardless of the art, I might like the manga, but I can’t say at all whether it’d be really good or not. The unusual relationship of the new girl Nana and the popular guy Yano – it isn’t something new that the girl, who’s almost like an outcast, tries to communicate with her classmates. Looking at the relationship generally, the relationship of a (new) girl and a popular guy has gotten quite common, and common things are never to my taste. It’s quite bothering to know that even though they might end up together, the relationship will have lots of things to go because it’s just that unwonted. Still plausible, still sounds good, but I don’t know with the others, it just isn’t to my taste. The same thing may be said to my liked shoujo manga, Kimi ni Todoke, but at least the art is more pleasing, and they deliver their messages clearer than Bokura ga Ita. Speaking of art, Kimi ni Todoke’s Kazehaya almost has the same looks with Yano.

Moving on. I took my chance to read this manga because I was looking for some random shoujo manga that’s recommended by some people. I was clearly disappointed in it, although it might get strong in the later parts, I won’t take my chance. (Also, it has become quite unusual for me to write in less than 500 words. It isn’t because I don’t like it; it’s because I’ve already lost my copy – one of the reasons being frustrated at getting all the copies up to the latest chapter, and apparently see no use of it at all and reluctantly delete it all.)

With all that said, I’m going to drop this manga.

Awhile ago I was thinking if I should write character reviews for Bokura ga Ita characters, namely Nana, Yano and Takeuchi. However, after looking at my Bokura ga Ita anime review, I realised I ranted a little too much on the characters rather than the storyline.

Well, that could be, and most probably was, because I was rather fed up with Yano and Nana. But they were cute together nevertheless, don’t get me wrong here.

So I guess I won’t be doing character reviews for Bokura ga Ita after all, huh. Sorry about that, especially if you were looking forward to it. And I’ve been wondering why my Bokura ga Ita post is getting quite a lot of views although it’s a rant. I’m so embarrassed :S

-          Shika finding out her father isn’t who she thought he was in Sand Chronicles. This one is great because it was Fuji who suspected that he wasn’t a legitimate Tsukishima heir, and tormented himself to the point of closing off other people – I certainly didn’t see it coming that it was really Shika who was illegitimate! And it was made even sadder because she, unlike Fuji, never even suspected any of the secrets in her family. I thought Fuji’s storyline might play out à la Yuu from Marmalade Boy, but it turned out better not only because of the twist involving Shika, but also because Fuji’s emotional distress was better handled.

We Were There's Nanami

-          Nanami’s line at the end of We Were There volume eight: “I never saw Yano again.” Yano decides to move with his mother to Tokyo for his last year of high school, and he and Nanami make a promise to meet there in a year. The series then flashforwards from their separation at the train station to the end of Nanami’s last year in college, where we find out she and Yano never kept their promise. The next volume couldn’t have come out fast enough, because I couldn’t believe the way Nanami and Yano drifted apart. This also counts as one of the saddest moments I’ve read in a manga, because reading this scene moved me to tears.

-          Ren asking Nana to marry her in volume eleven of Nana. In the panels leading up to this scene, the mood is very tense because Nana anticipates that the next time she sees Ren they’ll be breaking up. Instead, Ren says ‘Marry me.’ I think I stared at those two words for five minutes before I could comprehend what was going on enough to turn to the next page!

-          Hachi finding out she’s pregnant in volume eight of Nana. Yes, another moment from Nana – Ai Yazawa is just that good. Most series wouldn’t go this far, having the main female character wind up pregnant in the middle of the series, rather than as some ‘happily ever after.’ The fact that this happens when she’s with Nobu, her ‘dream guy,’ yet Takumi finds out first and is the one to tell Nobu about the pregnancy and that she’s not sure who the father is makes the drama all the more heartbreaking. In many ways, this is where this series begins. This one was still surprising even though I had already semi-spoiled it for myself.

-          Naoki kissing Kotoko on vacation in volume four of Itazura na Kiss. As soon as I saw Naoki kindly approach Kotoko, I could tell it was going to be a dream sequence. Then when Kotoko wakes up and mentions that she can still feel the sensation of the kiss from her dream on her lips, Yuuki is shown hiding, so I just assumed that he had kissed her and was developing feelings for her because he was blushing. I didn’t think too much about it, especially because the incident was dropped for a while. But then a while later in the series, when Naoki’s feelings for Kotoko are being doubted, Yuuki reveals that he knows Naoki loves Kotoko because he kissed her that summer  – it wasn’t a dream! I was as ecstatic as I was shocked when I read that, and all I could think was “Well played.” I really believe that the way Kaoru Tada executes scenes like these is what makes her a wonderful writer, and what makes Itazura na Kiss such an enjoyable series.

Suki Dakara – Bokura Ga Ita (OST)

Well, if you’re the kind that goes for foolish loves, a selfish lover that wants you all for himself, or plainly just a firm believer in the quote “love is blind”, this anime is definitely for you.

Just a warning though, this anime is rather slow-paced, so if you like fast-paced romances, you might not be able to survive through all 26 episodes.

I started watching Bokura ga Ita because of the “innocent, childish love” feel it gave me. The graphics and colours are soft, gentle, and not the intense kind of animes I’ve been watching recently. The couple just looks like they’re match-made in heaven, I mean, just take a look at this.

Aren’t they such a cute duo? It just seems like I copied and pasted the guy’s face onto the girl’s (no I don’t have that photoshopping skillz). Just kidding.

Anyway, they seem like a really childish, sweet, innocent lil’ couple foolishly head over heels in love right? Well I was proven wrong.

(don’t expect much of a detailed review because I didn’t like this anime too much. Actually you can expect more of a rant, I’m really sorry. If you’re not interested, or a die-hard fan of this anime, I’d suggest you either don’t treat my post too seriously, or just not read it at all.)

I don’t mean that they weren’t loving, I just meant that they weren’t innocent. I was looking forward to an innocent romance without the mention of sex. I’m sorry to those that are really fond of this anime, it’s not that I’m not fond of it, I just felt that inclusion of a sex scene between these two cute lil characters was totally out of place, especially when they’re in high school (not to mention that the guy had sex in middle school too).

Other than that, I enjoyed the romantic moments between Yano (the main guy) and Nana (the main girl). Yano was rather possessive, to an extent that kind of makes me hate him at some moments. And yes, one of the most frustrating matters about this anime is none other than the main guy, Yano.

Yano can be such a sweetheart at times, treating Nana like a princess, being so cute as to wanting to hold her hand during a movie, making mushy jokes, etc etc, but he really can be a jerk at times. It’s really hard to list out what I don’t like about him, well other than the fact that the list is going to be long, you won’t exactly understand until you watch the anime. Sometimes I would jump up and down in my chair and punch the air in front of the computer screen in anger. Yes, anger. Most of the time, I’m just deciding whether I like Yano or not. He has his reasons for being the way he is, but I really do feel that he can do better than that.

Let’s take for example him wanting to keep his previous relationship from Nana because he doesn’t want to see her cry. Yes, that’s a valid reason. But sometimes I do wonder if it’s because he was too ashamed to bring it up, after all, it was something he regretted. In my opinion, he should’ve let Nana knew from the start about his previous relationship. He was being such a big hypocrite when he was telling Nana that there should be “no secrets between us, okay?”. No secrets? Totally — when your ex-girlfriend’s little sister comes to your house, you violently shove your current girlfriend inside your house and lock her up, so you could have a proper conversation with the little sister. And your current girlfriend is obviously kept completely in the dark, unaware of what you’re talking about outside. Talk about “no secrets between us”. I was really fed up with Yano during this scene.

Furthermore, he keeps mentioning sex which is really irritating as we can tell that Nana is an innocent little girl and all Yano is doing, is polluting her! Maybe it’s normal in their culture there, but I really don’t think you should have sex with your girlfriend when your relationship isn’t even stable in the first place (not to mention you that you shouldn’t have sex with the little sister of your dead-ex). Let’s just take a look at cute, innocent characters in an awkward moment. Don’t worry there’s no porn or anything.

Oh come on, you’re ruining the cuteness of the characters. Just when I thought I could take a break from all that Yaoi I have been watching. Oops. Teehee.

Okay let’s look at the nice side of Yano. He’s really nice, and his mushy lines are a plus point to the anime! Doesn’t everyone love mushy lines? And Nana would just blush and blush and blush and blush; the romance here can’t be better described as “pink”. One of my favourite scenes of Nana and Yano is the scene where they went to catch a movie. The way Yano tried to get Nana to hold his hand was really adorable, one of my favourite romance scenes so far. And after every romantic moment comes more blushing of each character, looking away, or maybe just showing the sides of their mouth curl a little into a smile. Awwwwwwwwwwww.

(Damn I couldn’t find a picture where their hands could be shown. FYI, they just hooked their hands together awwwwwwwwww let’s all blush together, alright?)

Okay enough of Yano. Let’s talk about Nana.

Nana is an innocent high school girl that’s cute and all, but she’s rather(maybe much, much more than “rather”)  foolish. After being treated so horribly by Yano, she continues to love him (romantic to some, yes I do understand), and goes back to him. She’s just really unlucky to have fallen in love with a guy that has seriously complicated past love issues, and Yano just can’t seem to get over his dead ex-girlfriend, which coincidentally(or maybe not?) has the same name as his current girlfriend. It has been also suggested that he fell in love with current-Nana because of the similarities that current-Nana and ex-Nana share. What do you think?

I admit I’m slightly biased against this couple, though they just look so compatible together, I’d rather Nana go out with Takeuchi, if I were really concerned about her emotional, mental, and physical welfare. At least her life would be so much easier. Takeuchi’s a really nice guy as compared to Yano. He likes Nana too but continues to give in to his best friend, for the sake of the friendship him and Yano shares. That’s just really nice of him, don’t you think?

And then Yano goes to show his “appreciation” by ordering his friends to tie Takeuchi up so Takeuchi won’t be able to confess to Nana. How selfish. Guess that’s why I like Takeuchi so much. He’s just always there, looking out for Nana, taking a selfless position, thinking of the welfare of Nana and his best friend before himself. Guess it doesn’t pay to be nice, does it? Sometimes I wish Nana would just realise how nice Takeuchi is. Poor Takeuchi.

Oh well, I guess that’s why love is blind, after all. No matter how much hurt you’ve went through, you continue to foolishly go back to that same person, only to be wounded again.

For me, I wouldn’t like an anime if the couple that I adore doesn’t end up together. Well, I’m sorry to all Yano and Nana lovers, but I’d prefer Nana to be with Takeuchi, although I do understand that Nana’s heart is with Yano. I don’t know who to hate and who to love!

I’d recommend this to all romance fans that like love triangles, especially with a “best friend character” that’s always going through the “one-sided” feelings. I don’t know why, but I always end up sympathising with these characters, wanting them to get their happy ending too, and even liking them better than the main character.

It’s just me I guess. Who do you prefer Nana to be with? Or would you’d rather her stay single?

Nana and Yano

I have decided to open my blog with a comment on Bokura Ga Ita. I have just started this anime (currently on the second episode) and the beginning events had me thinking. The main character, Nana, fell in love with the male protagonist, Yano, within a day. It made me really curious. As I have never been in love in the past (I won’t mention how many) years of my life, can you really fall in love so quickly?

Or maybe I’m wrong in saying that she “fell in love”. Attraction is one word I guess, and it is far from being synonymous with love. So I’ll rephrase my question then. Or maybe a question is now unnecessary. Writing it out clears my mind a little, and I just realised that these things cannot be generalised. Or I’m just really a hopeless romantic.

Ironic, isn’t it? I love reading things about love, watching shows and movies about love, and listening to love songs. That’s probably the reason why I’m prone to “falling in love with love”, and now I’m starting to doubt whether my great interest in this will just get my hopes up.

And now I’m starting to sound lovesick. Haha! I created this post expecting me to comment on the beginning of the relationship between Nana and Yano in Bokura Ga Ita, but I’m digressing, aren’t I? This post is now quite embarassing. But I’m telling myself to have the guts to express myself, no matter what. It’s one of the beauties of the Internet. “Anonymity”. And yes, I intentionally placed quotation marks as I’m sure that no one can remain anonymous on the Internet forever. That’s why I’ll enjoy this while it lasts.

Oh, and the irony I was referring to before was the fact that I am currently… loveless, should we say? And yet I love love stories. Stories about love. It wasn’t an erroneous duplication of the word. And this is where I’ll end this post. Hopefully, the posts that follow will be more interesting and entertaining than this one. And more sensible. So there you have it! A cheesy post to upstart my blog!
