A nicely fitted bolero is ideal because it fits closely to the torso, so it will not add any bulk, and it is short enough not to obscure any of the details on your gown.

A bolero can be created from a matching fabric to the gown, such as a silk satin or mikado, or lace or organza. The lace boleros are particularly lovely, as are those with couture details like oversized organza ruffles.  The designers have spoken – boleros are “in”.

Whew!  I have to be the girl to follow a five-part Vegas story?  Good thing I suffer from delusion and mild senility.

Drinking adventures have a renewed sense of importance here in lovely Colorado, but how you ask–Maren, you’re the champ, how, HOW can things get crazier simply because you’ve changed your geographic location?  Easy my dear readers, allow me to explain:

They tell no lies when they say beware of altitude.  That sneaky bitch messes with your “normal” understanding of limits.  Being that I have been infringing upon my liver for many years now I thought I knew how much was too much, or what a certain number of beverages did to my little body, spirit, and mind.  Nay, my friends.  Nay.  Apparently, being 4900 feet above sea level as opposed to however many feet below it throws a wrench in the aforementioned carefully practiced formula.  Good news?  I DRINK CHEAPER!  No, I haven’t managed to  regress all the way back to being a cheap drunk, but it is slightly cheaper…I’ll take it.

I no longer have Two Dollar Tuesday but I do now have a three margarita limit.  How you ask is that a fair trade?  I didn’t think so either until my little brother Craig came to visit.  You see Craig is one of the main reasons I chose this new location, he used to attend CU Boulder and every time I came to visit him I fell a little harder for this town of bars, snow, and microbrews galore.  So Craig comes to visit and show Brian and I the CO ropes.  As we are sitting at our favorite happy hour spot (EVERYTHING HALF-OFF) Craig starts to tell us his crazy drunken story of the night before.  He isn’t even halfway through when I stop him as he is detailing the Rio to us.

Craig:  …and we went straight to the upstairs patio of the Rio because they limit you to only three of their margaritas…
Maren: Excuse me, but what?  Only three?  Three what, pitchers?
Craig: No honey, three frozen margaritas, whichever flavor you choose.
Maren:  Um, what if you’re still thirsty?  And who gets off having the gaul to tell people they can only have three frozen margaritas (if this was a fictional story this would be the part where instead of ending it with Maren said, it would say Maren scoffed).  Because scoffing is exactly what I did at the mention of someone assuming I could not accurately defeat three frozen drinks.
So Craig suggests we tab out from the Boulder Cafe and make our way a couple of blocks over to the Rio to take on this frozen challenge.

Being inside the Rio is an immediate warp into the twisted minds of restaurant proprietors.  Sometimes these people can take a theme a little too far.  It’s a mexican restaurant I get it.  The burritos, music, and margaritas gave it away but just in case the premise wasn’t thick enough?  The bartenders and servers were all wearing hair grease and boleros.  Beautiful.  Boleros?  I didn’t even know they still made them.  I thought they died along with John Wayne?
We all shimmied up to the bar and let Craig do the ordering.  Three seemingly normal frozen margaritas appeared in front of us.  No crazy lava looking fire tricks, no safety waivers to sign.  They smelled and looked and tasted like any margarita I’ve ever had.  Halfway through our first ones Craig notes that the rumor is the Rio combines everclear and tequila in order to get their black-out effect.  “Of course,” he said “no one knows for sure.”

side note: of course they don’t.  You’re too fucked after you leave to remember any sort of an agenda you had or created while you were there.

Brian is the first to slip into the giggles.  Hmm, that’s weird.  Craig and I decide that we need to capitalize on his inebriated state.  One of the bartenders has been purposely ignoring us (something to do with being besties with one of Craig’s forgone romances).  But he can’t ignore Brian, especially when he is so charming [read: drunk].  So we egg Brian into being Captain Questions.

She wouldn’t admit to the drink’s ingredients (I’m going with cyanide) but she was very helpful with explaining why they wrapped EVERY bottled beer in wetted wax paper.

She also educated us on the “mini margaritas” we kept seeing go over the bar.  They were literally 1/3 smaller in barbie-sized traditional margarita glasses complete with smaller straws.
> The “business men” that come into the Rio order them during lunch as a way of convincing themselves they aren’t really drinking during the workday.  This makes me wonder what other smaller things they have convinced themselves are perfectly acceptable and functional?

We didn’t feel right bringing up the bolero in case it was a sour point with our pourer of drinks.  We tried the secret ingredient question one more time, again with no success.  Instead, she simply pushed three more margaritas across the bar, round number two–strawberry.  About this time I glance up and see an enormous neon sign that has an outline of a margarita and simply: Limit 3.  Wow, so it wasn’t an urban legend these people are not joking.

Thiiiiiiiiiis is about the time my memory starts to get fuzzy.  Yes folks at the end of margarita two…TWO!  We were collectively bested.  I pride myself on impressive conclusions and musings of the night.  Crazy after parties and drinking into the night.  Sorry not this time, I was Rio’d–hardcore.  Craig got the truck out of the parking garage, we were there also but not to my knowledge.  We were both super classy and passed the hell out on the coach in the middle of a house party at a friend of Craig’s we’d just met that evening; but not before Brian yakked in the kid’s bathroom.  I haven’t felt like that the next day since the very first time I threw up because of alcohol.  A time when even looking at beer ads for the next week sent a rumble of dry heaves up my body.

So I leave you with that: a black hole where memory should be and a two day break from anything alcohol based afterward, I mean not even mouthwash.  However, luckily for the reader’s sake we all know I will be heading back to the Rio and maybe one day with a little extra coaching from KFD I’ll even surmount it?  It’s all about goals people.

Cuando emigró al DF en busca de una mejor suerte como cantante, consiguió trabajo en el cabaret “El Retiro” donde conoció a Don Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta quien la bautizó como Toña la Negra.

Agustín Lara la conoció y a demás de la simpatía que se ganaron por ser paisanos, el Flaco de Oro quedó impactado por su manera de cantar y es por eso que le dio a Toña, muchas de sus composiciones para que las interpretara. Agustín siguió escribiendo canciones, siempre teniendo en mente que las interpretaría Toña. De esta manera, Toña la Negra se convirtió en la voz predilecta de Agustín Lara.

Como dato curioso, entonación y el tiempo que Toña daba a las canciones al momento de cantar era bastante peculiar. En una interpretación con orquesta en vivo, el cantante es quien va dando el tiempo a la orquesta y cuando Toña cantaba,  daba un falsete a su canto, de manera tal que daba la impresión de adelantarse al tiempo o de quedarse atrás, haciendo que la orquesta intentara ajustar cuando en verdad no había nada que ajustar, Toña seguía bien el tiempo. Esta es una de las razones por las cuales a Toña la Negra se le conocía que desafinaba las orquestas.

En este primer video, si le ponen atención podrán notar esto que les digo, a demás de disfrutar de una muy bonita interpretación en vivo.

Esta otra canción es autoría de Agustín Lara, la canción se llama Arrancame la vida. Una canción para de verdad suicidarse con una sobredosis de galleta de animalito o para cortarnos las venas con un espárrago.

Como pueden ver, su voz era muy buena para los boleros, su aspecto era el e una auténtica criolla veracruzana, lo que le valió buena parte de su éxito.

Hoje, 10/10/2009  Roberto Barradas fez um Show em Vitória de Santo Antão, Cidade onde morou quando mais jovem.

O show no “Varanda Tadeu Souza” foi um sucesso com direito a casa lotada e muitos elogios.

Roberto Barradas diz ter ficado muito feliz em cantar na cidade e que espera poder voltar lá mais vezes.
