• Screenplay is very beautifully written; it is very realistic and honest but has restrictive appeal.

• The dialogues are quite natural and the realistic ambience adds to the drama.

• The film will do well in cities and multiplexes and will be liked by the intellectual audience.

• Performances by Abhay Deol, Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechlin are noteworthy. A must-watch film for those who would like to see it for the actors’ performances.

• Dibakar Banerjee is a brand in himself and you know what to expect from him. His direction is really good; especially the realistic atmosphere that he creates is very appealing.

• Entertainment value is low but that is the nature of the film. It may also depend on how you define ‘entertainment’

• Music by Vishal Shekhar is good and Emraan’s uncouth dance is quite an attraction in ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ as are the lyrics.

• The mass audience may not understand the relevance of the title ‘Shanghai’.

• It will remain a city-based film and will do well in multiplexes which will not be enough to make decent profits.

• Overall, Shanghai may be ‘below average’ or ‘average’ at the box office. The film has not opened too well but will wait for the weekend business for further analysis and box-office verdict.
