There are some good games on tap this weekend. The biggest one is probably the Arsenal/Chelsea match Sunday afternoon. Both squads have been playing well and winning. Arsenal is eight points back from first place Chelsea, but is definitely capable of knocking off the leaders. On Saturday, fourth place Tottenham plays away to fifth place Aston Villa in a game that could have major top four implications. And of course, there’s the Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton, which is always a hard fought match.

Members

Jak Higson – Guitar
Tom From – Drums
Ste Heart – Vox
Mark Walker – Guitar
Ian Kay – Bass

The announced track list includes Machine, Siren and Dan Hibiki!

I’ve been speaking to Tom and he seems very excited about their upcoming tracks.

It is quite clear from speaking to Tom, the band are giving a constant 110%. You can hear on the track “Machine”, the hard work is definitely paying off!

Machine

Tom sent me the track not so long ago, and immediately I was struck by the quality and professional sound of the track! I was half expecting a low quality, poorly mixed demo track with muffled vocals, over bearing beats and blurry riffs. Instead I was blown away by a track which could be passed off as from being from a signed band, recorded in a professional studio with aid from a producer.

The vocals are really strong, backed up by a heavy beat and beautifully distorted riff work. Listening to their new track, I reminisce over when I was 16 and new metal was still the “In Thing” and music had that groove and anger that made me fall in love with Metal all those years ago.

Houston we have a problem have a heavy, modern metal feel, and from what I have heard so far, stand far out from the crowd.

I can officially say that they can now count me as another in their already growing fan base.

You can find more information, and get your ears around their tracks on MySpace and Facebook, links below:

Meg: Predicts a good lie-in for us all on Sunday Ding ding, round two! So with four out of six outco

Meg: Predicts a good lie-in for us all on Sunday

Ding ding, round two! So with four out of six outcomes correctly predicted so far, let’s see how I get on with Sunday’s fixtures:

Blackburn vs Bolton

This week, Sky’s two course ‘Super-Sunday’ is more of a quick bite down the greasy spoon than dinner at the Savoy, and if I’m to continue the analogy, I guess this fixture is the starter. A rubbish prawn cocktail if you like.

It’s likely to be a proper mud-slinger of a match, with more aerial balls than a game of American football. I also expect the commentator to frequently remind us that [insert attacking team's name here] are ‘a threat from set pieces’, because that’s generally all they can get excited about when two teams with no interest in playing any football come up against each other.

Sleeping is almost certainly going to be more interesting than this one, so why not treat yourself to a lie-in? Just think, you may even have a dream about Megan Fox*… and do you really want to miss out on that for the sake of Blackburn vs Bolton?!

Verdict: 0-0

Stoke City vs Portsmouth

If this game is the main course, then think of it as the disappointing roast dinner you at at that pub you’ve never been back to. Cold, hard roast potatoes, slimy Yorkshire puddings, and fatty slices of cheap beef.

Mind you, unlike your starter, there will be one or two edible things on the plate to keep it from being a total disappointment. Expect Kevin Prince-Boateng and Jamie O’Hara to be the honey roasted parsnips and minted peas of this affair.

I don’t think that will be enough to save this ‘dish’ though. With a doubt surrounding medical experiment and Ivory Coast forward Aruna Dindane, Pompey will struggle to break down a resolute Stoke defence. As a result, The Potters will be in no rush to break away from their horribly unattractive and defensive style of play, and the game will suffer due to very little open football.

Verdict: 1-0

Tottenham vs Wigan

Re-scheduled to 3pm on Sunday due to Steve Bruce’s penchant for bringing South Americans to the Premier League a few years back, Sky will be kicking themselves that they aren’t serving this one up to their viewers. In stark contrast to the Boltons, Blackburns and Stokes of this world, both these teams play attractive, open football.

‘Appy ‘Arry Redknapp will be pleased to see his t’riffic winger Aaron Lennon returning to the Spurs side after a spell on the sidelines, as this should add an extra bit of zip to the right hand side. In Lennon’s absence, David Bentley demonstrated that he’s probably more interested in signing up bands for his bar on the Costa Del Sol than playing football. Oh well, England will just have to find itself another new ‘DB7′.

Wigan’s ability to deal with Lennon will be the deciding factor in this match. If they do, then they have the likes of Rodallega and N’Zogbia to exploit the space that Tottenham always leave for their opposition.

However, after a game on Wednesday and a long flight back from Honduras, Maynor Figueroa has his work cut out to contain Lennon. As so often is the case at White Hart Lane, Spurs will attempt to harness their home support and come flying out of the blocks, looking to put the game to bed before the opposition have a chance to impose themselves.

I can see this happening tomorrow.

Verdict: 4-1

* See what I did there?! After my Transformers-heavy MS Paint Story Of The Week the other day, I just thought I’d tell you what the most popular Robots-In-Disguise-based search term used to get to my site has been. And the winner is… ‘Megan Fox Naked’.

Who says the internet isn’t primarily for porn, eh?

Tuesdays class was a mini field trip around Bolton to take some stock nightime images of the town. After a brief visit to the Bolton News offices, we set off to capture some atmosphere. The image below was my best of the night:

(image © Gary Danton)

I really enjoyed night time photography as it makes you think more about the camera itself. I was forced to go totally manual, guessing the exposure based on the ambient light. For the majority of the images, the aperture was set to f22 and a shutter speed of between 6 and 8 seconds was used.

The one big exception to this rule was the image above, it was set to f22 and an exposure of 30 seconds. It was by far the best of the night, I love the light trails and the ambient light. I used a 4 stop neutral density filter to get the light levels down so not to overexpose.

Some other highlights of the walkabout are below:

After another international break, the Premier League is back in action this weekend. The injured stars of Liverpool will also be back on the pitch this weekend (thank goodness). The injured Reds were: Steven Gerrard, David Ngog, Daniel Agger, Glen Johnson, Fabio Aurelio, Albert Riera, Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun. Torres is the only one still out, so yay for that international break. Man City is one point up on Liverpool in the table, so it’s a must-win game for Liverpool if they want to work their way back into the top four. The Reds have only won one game since Sept. 26 so they need to start winning now to get things back on track.

Counter terrorism offices carried out raids on properties throughout the Greater Manchester area including Longsight, Levenshulme, Bolton and Stalybridge.

Five men have been arrested on suspicion of terrorism, one of the men is an un-named Muslim preacher who teaches the Koran at a number of mosques in the Manchester area.

One of the five men arrested was picked up in a raid at a Heathrow airport.

Police have said the raids were a low key affair, armed police weren’t involved and they have stressed that there was no immediate threat to the public.

The men were arrested as part of an investigation into terror camps in Afghanistan, it is believed that the men were looking to hatch a terrorist plot overseas rather than in the UK.

North-West Counter Terrorism officers raided the three addresses at around 4am, with around 40 plain clothes officers involved in the raids and searching of the property.

The raids took place in a mobile phone shop and flat on Stockport Road, Levenshulme. There were no arrests made at this address.

A 52 year old man was arrested at a house on Victoria Terrace, Longsight and a 21 year old at Bowdon Avenue in Fallowfield.

One man, 27, was arrested in Stalybridge, Rydal Walk. The Muslim preacher, 62, was arrested at his home on Willows Lane, Deane, Bolton.

ERA TODAY!!! On December 3rd, the United Nations as part of the “30th Anniversary Celebration Event”

ERA TODAY!!!

On December 3rd, the United Nations as part of the “30th Anniversary Celebration Event” will hold a global celebration recognizing the adoption of “Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women”(CEDAW) in 1979. I don’t know if you recall, but the United States, in it’s “great” role as a women’s rights advocate, still hasn’t ratified this UN measure.

Briefly, CEDAW treaty signers seek to:

to incorporate the principle of equality of men and women in their legal system, abolish all discriminatory laws and adopt appropriate ones prohibiting discrimination against women;

to establish tribunals and other public institutions to ensure the effective protection of women against discrimination; and

to ensure elimination of all acts of discrimination against women by persons, organizations or enterprises.

Here is the most recent list of States (countries) who have ratified. I emphasize, the United States has had the signed treaty sitting in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee since 1980, the Jimmy Carter era.

When last we discussed the treaty, it was languishing in the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations during the presidential campaign. Both Joe Biden and Barack Obama were members of the committee at the time. This was the committee that Obama failed to attend and where Biden had to defend him. Biden, in 2002 did make an attempt to get the treaty ratified where abortion would not be included, but birthers were having none of it. After the Elections, John Kerry was assigned to be the head of the committee. Barbara Boxer, an advocate, is also part of the committee. However, as Senate committees are, it’s also filled with notable conservatives and blue dog democrats.

If you want to think about how this affects our foreign policy, take this simple example. SOS HRC goes to Afghanistan, Iraq or Pakistan and asks them to treat women better. After all, they DID sign and ratify the CEDAW Treaty. If we can’t even get the ERA or CEDAW ratified, what as a country are we going to include in our negotiations? What example do we provide?

We present the same face to the world as Iran and Somalia. Our negotiations can be no better. As the League of Women’s Voters says, the US should strive to be a leader in women’s rights. Currently we are the ONLY democracy that does not lead or follow. On the home front, this intractability toward women’s rights reflects even in our current efforts to pass a health care bill that includes the needs of 50% of the population. It prevents relatively simple things like the confirmation of Patricia Smith for the Labor’s Solicitor General, Her nomination was clear back in March. Her confirmation has been now held up by Senator Enzi since October.

What prevents ratification by the US? The Treaty has a provision to allow reservations by the States. Therefore if we have them, we could ratify with reservations. The treaty does not specially discuss abortion. Biden’s fruitless attempt to satisfy birthers objections elucidate a larger issue.

The National Right to Life Committee letter in March of this year throws a lot of light on the Subject. After slinging around all the same old tired hash of right wing women’s issues, it appears the main reason is they just don’t want anything to do with the UN. Under the guise of abortion rights, they say:

The 2002 resolution also contained an “understanding” that the UN compliance committee “has no authority to compel actions” by nations that ratify the treaty. This was just another dodge. Even without the power to directly compel action by state parties, the numerous pro-abortion decrees of the CEDAW Committee will be regarded as far more authoritative constructions of the legal obligations imposed by the treaty than any contrary “understanding” by a single party.

Already, two justices of the U.S. Supreme Court (Justice Ginsberg, joined by Justice Breyer) have cited CEDAW to buttress a legal point, even though the Senate has never ratified CEDAW. [Grutter v. Bollinger, 539 U.S. 344-346 (2003)] If the Senate ratifies CEDAW, litigants will employ CEDAW in future legal challenges to federal and state enactments that touch on abortion, and they are likely to find a greater number of jurists who will give legal weight to such arguments. It is noteworthy that in 2006 Colombia’s Constitutional Court relied in part on CEDAW to liberalize Colombia’s abortion law.

Never mind the fact that we have all kind of treaties that we manage sucessfully, and that the world community and the UN influence our decisions every day.

You may recall the brief tenure of John Bolton as Interim US Representative to the UN.

Click on his name to remind you of the calamity he was. Quoting from Wiki, when he famously said in 1994:

There is no such thing as the United Nations. There is only the international community, which can only be led by the only remaining superpower, which is the United States.”[51] He also stated that “The Secretariat Building in New York has 38 stories. If you lost ten stories today, it wouldn’t make a bit of difference.

The world was aghast at the arrogance of the United States. What kind of signal did Bush’s subsequent nomination of him then, to the UN, send? The conservative right is still hanging on to control in important places. Women’s equality here is simply a pawn in the right’s struggle to get us out of the UN, to remove us from the international community and isolate us.

So we have: control, diminishment, isolation, reduced legal remedies, resulting pain and suffering. Come to think of it, this whole situation sounds a lot like living with your average abuser.

—————————————-

Greetings everyone! I do apologize for not blogging as prolifically. For those that believe in the power of prayer, do pray for me if it crosses your mind. I’m going through some tough times right now and it’s been affecting everything that I do. But I do want everyone to know that I’m still out there, even if Magnus the Dog has been hiding in his doghouse lately.

Today, I do something new here on The Rabid Conservative. I reach into my mailbag and answer a letter from a reader. Today’s letter comes from Gary who writes…

President Obama is playing a deadly game with our troops deployed to the war zone of Afghanistan. He is playing a deadly game of chess with Karzai. First, Obama withheld his decision on troop force levels in country to force Karzai’s hand on a recount of the recent presidential elections in Afghanistan. Karzai was fortunate that his opponent conceded the race and the president showed some progress in his glacial decision timetable.

Now, we read that the president is very concerned about the credibility of Karzai’s government which now prevents Obama from moving forward on his Afghan troop decision.

What next? Once Karzai cleans house to Obama’s satisfaction will he hold up his troop decision because Karzai’s government is not diverse enough? Not enough women in his cabinet?

This is a deadly game because the longer Obama waits the stronger the Taliban becomes, more troops die and our position as an international power erodes.

Is the president consciously weakening us as a country to fall into line with his European model for us?

In the coming months the administration will decide to not send more troops because of the administration’s eroded confidence in the Karzai government. President Obama will say he’s not be able to add any more troops to the Afghanistan conflict in good conscience and in fairness to our brave men and women of the armed services. Remember that Obama said he will not commit troops to any conflict unless it is absolutely necessary. I think he’s posturing for a pull out of troops from Afghanistan and will use Karzai as the scapegoat using whatever trumped up excuse they can come up with.

Thanks for the very insightful note, Gary.

Afghanistan has been something of a mystery to me with respect to this President. I seem to remember during the campaign, Obama kept pushing the case that the real threat, the real problem, was not in Iraq, but in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In other words, Obama kept pushing that Afghanistan was the war we were supposed to be fighting and Iraq was the war from which we were supposed to disengage.

But just today, we hear that Karl Eikenberry, US ambassador to Afghanistan, disagreeing with the position of sending more troops in country. After three months of waiting for someone within ObamAd, Inc. to say something about a troop increase in Afghanistan, here comes Eikenberry who says that the country is too politically unstable to put more troops in.

John Bolton, former US Ambassador to the UN gave his own assessment of Obama’s foreign policy and I think he is right on. (Read the Imprimis article). Essentially, Bolton believe and I concur, that Obama has very little care for American sovereignty, but rather considers it relatively insignificant when compared to the exceptionalism of any other country in the world.

On the subject of Afghanistan, it would seem that the American mission has changed. During the Bush years, it was about going in and hunting the Taliban and Al Qaeda wherever they were hiding. In fact, Afghanistan was the first place the US engaged on the War on Terror and this is the reason we initially pushed for Harmid Karzai to lead the country – because he believed in these ideals too. But now, it seems like we’re less interested in eliminating the Taliban and Al Qaeda and more interested in trying to negotiating with these groups for the absurd belief that they will disengage hostilities if we become less sovereign in the world.

Remember that these groups cite America’s “arrogance” and “interference” as reasons why they have engaged in hostilities. Because Obama does not believe in the unique exceptionalism of America, the “shining city on the hill”, his actions do fall in line with what the Europeans have desired for America for the last two hundred years.

America’s exceptionalism comes from the fact that America, when founded, demonstrated its disagreement with how the rest of the world operated. For example, when the Colonies were subservient to the British Crown, it was illegal for a man to own property – all property was the ownership of the King. This was the general European standard for hundreds of years previous – that the majority would be ruled by a chosen oligarchy, a ruling elite class whose will was sovereign. This is a contrast to the American system that fundamentally places sovereignty on the will of the people, not the will of a group of people, or one man or even President. George Mason first enumerated the fundamental rights of humanity as a right to life, liberty, and property – real property, that could not be taken away from a man just because the King decided it to be so. This was accentuated by the passing of the 14th Amendment.

When this translates to foreign policy, an enterprise that George Washington cautioned that we should limit ourselves, it naturally has a very sluggish effect – getting the people to agree on what we should be doing in Afghanistan prevents hasty mistakes. If we go to war, we do so cautiously and deliberately, which means we don’t capriciously change our approach, just because a new president takes office. This also means that when we go, we go to achieve the mission, not play political games.

But we’ve seen with the contrasts of policy between Bush and Obama that the will of the people is summarily ignored, in favor of the ruling elite. Bush takes us to war, Obama tries to pull us out – both of which, I believe, are contrary to the intent of the Founders, not because of whether a war is right or wrong, but because we’re changing foreign policy faster than the seasons change.

Europe likes this capriciousness because in it, they have the opportunity to override the will of the American people through their negotiation and encouragement. So when they get someone like Barack Obama, who doesn’t believe in the will of the people (much of which today, illustrated by poll after poll) but rather, in pushing his agenda, and that agenda being one of being more agreeable with the whims of the rest of the world (noted by Obama’s need to be liked and praised), it plays right into the hands of the power brokers of the EU.

And it plays into the hands of the terrorists as well, who are just looking for that chink in the armor in order to further their war with “the Great Satan”.

The most dangerous thing about Obama’s developing approach to Afghanistan was pointed out very succinctly by Bolton. If the Taliban and Al Qaeda are allowed to solidify in Afghanistan, they will take their war to Pakistan, take over their government, and secure the Pakistani nuclear arms. And if that happens, it’s not really a slippery slope in thinking what they will do with them.

The passion of Scottish fans could give them the edge in an enlarged Premiership Phil Gartside, the

The passion of Scottish fans could give them the edge in an enlarged Premiership

Phil Gartside, the highly respected Bolton chairman will today attempt to sell the idea of a two tier Premier League, featuring the two Glasgow giants Rangers and Celtic, to the remaining 19 league supremeos. Gartside has tweaked his proposal, which was met with fierce indignation when first aired in April, to allow promotion and relegation from the Premier League structure but to all intent and purpose, the proposal is designed to further enclose the elite clubs and safeguard the financial security of those lucky enough to be present at the time of partition.

There is unquestionably an appetite within the football watching public for welcoming Celtic and Rangers into the league. The presence of such well supported, historically prosperous clubs into a British league would undoubtedly enrich the Premiership and allow it a extra dimension; for instance, the prospect of your club travelling to Celtic park and playing in front of 60,000 is more likely to incite the senses than an date at, well, Bolton’s Reebok stadium for instance. Old Firm games, already amongst the most irascible derby dates in the world would also benefit greatly from being a part of a wider struggle as opposed to a straight title shootout.

And before any of you point out that in terms of quality of football, neither Scottish side is worth their salt in the Premier division, that may be true today but give them a few years my friends and it’ll be a different story alltogether. Unleashed from the financial backwater of the SPL and let loose amongst the Premier League’s boundless coffers, both sides would quickly prosper. Each has the kind of stadia and fan base which make the likes of Gartside queasy in envy and the financial strife which has inhibited Rangers’ transfer activity of late would be almost instantly alleviated.

So therein lies the problem. While most people would be lithe to begrudge the Old Firm the chance to flourish away from their quaint, idiosyncratic league, the practicalities of it seem too tough to resolve. Firstly, what happens to the Champions League spots? Liverpool’s plight over recent weeks has resulted in many observers highlighting the financial implications of the Merseyside club failing to gain entry to Europe’s Premier competition next season. The hegemony of the ‘big four,’ is such that their financial strategies are compliant with making it to at least the group stages of the competition. How then would these teams react to two more clubs with Champions League ambitions?

One might suggest that Scotland’s two places are simply transferred as part of Rangers’ and Celtic’s dowry, after all aren’t they the only teams who ever qualify anyway? But making such a move opens up a can of worms capable of writhing its way through the entire structure of European football. How would countries such as Spain and Italy react to the Premiership having an unprecedented six qualifying spots into the European Cup? What would happen to the other Scottish clubs, forced to plough on in a league bereft of its most treasured assets and without Champions League football to play for? The generous offer of a British League is unlikely to extend to the other three professional divisions in Scotland and League football in the country would almost certainly wither away until it reached the kind of stature enjoyed by the leagues in Wales and Ireland.

Such a move is also likely to ignite the readily combustible relationship between the Premier League and Uefa whose President Michel Platini has waged an Anglophobic war on the self proclaimed ‘biggest league in the world,’ since his election. The chances of an extra entry spot or two being tossed the way of the Premier League seems about as likely as Platini revealing his fervent passion for Morris dancing.

The intention’s may be good and the support shown by managers such as Harry Redknapp and former Celtic boss Martin O’Neill is admirable but in reality clubs such as Spurs and Villa could only suffer in their bid to reach the stature of a ‘big four,’ club should the Old Firm join. Scotland may also soon be a fully independent nation, making the league a multinational super league of the kind that Uefa has spent the best part of two decades trying to avoid through the expansion of the Champions League. What might begin as a small step for Glasgow’s giants could be the beginning of the end for national leagues as we know it.

Arsenal’s trophy cabinet may have been collecting nothing but dust in recent seasons but the plaudit cabinet at the Emirates Stadium is undoubtedly full-to-busting this term as their attacking exploits have earned them many admirers. Another fine display from Arsene Wenger’s men saw them destroy Wolves 4-1 and as a result three of their players reside in the top 10 of the Actim Index, with Cesc Fabregas, Robin Van Persie and Thomas Vermaelen featuring.

Despite Chelsea beating champions Manchester United at the weekend, Didier Drogba had a disappointing afternoon on the pitch. And on Sunday night Drogba may well have settled down in his expensive house to watch the Black Eyed Peas perform on the X Factor without knowing he shared the same fate as Fergie and co. That’s right, Sunday night saw the BEP dumped from the top of the singles chart by Tinchy Stryder and Drogba has also lost his place at the top of the pile, slipping down to number two mainly thanks to some impressive from by Fabregas, who takes his place at the summit.

Aston Villa dominate the Team of the Week – but they had the advantage of having played an extra game to most other teams. They lost at West Ham last midweek but made up for it in style with a 5-1 thumping of Bolton at the weekend. John Carew, who poses a huge threat to England’s World Cup chances if he continues to keep Emile Heskey out of the Villa side, had a marvellous afternoon, scoring once and having a hand in three others. He carded an impressive score of 60, which was only outdone by team-mate Ashley Young’s effort of 66. James Milner and Carlos Cuellar complete Villa’s presence in the select XI.

The fat ladies of Hull may well have been having a gargle in preparation for a song or two in honour of beleaguered boss Phil Brown before the weekend. But they will have stood down after the last-gasp victory over Stoke at the weekend. However, despite the win, Hull’s players are still struggling in the Index. Winger Stephen Hunt is their highest-placed player in 38th but you have to go well into the three figures to find their next player, with Kamil Zayatte weighing in at 110th. If there was an Index for most letters in a name, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink would almost certainly top it, but Sunday’s matchwinner is out of luck and he will have to make do with a double nelson, sitting at 222.

Talking of Nelsen, Blackburn’s Ryan Nelsen is having an impressive season and is proving that there is much more to New Zealand than cult comedy duo Flight of the Conchords, Jonah Lomu and rain. Nelsen had a great time of it in the win over Portsmouth, grabbing his first goal of the season and as a result takes his place in the Team of the Week. He moved up 68 places in the overall Index and will look for further improvement as he currently sits in 158th.

Portugal are in dire straits ahead of their World Cup play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina and are currently embroiled in a bitter row with Real Madrid over the availability of the ‘one man’ in their one-man team, Cristiano Ronaldo. And the Winker’s countrymen are not having a good time of it in the Actim Index this season. Chelsea’s Ricardo Carvalho is leading the way in 37th and even that is courtesy of a sizeable shift up the Index on the back of the win over Manchester United. Deco is doing what Deco does best and flattering to deceive in a disappointing 76th, while every Manchester United fan’s pet hate (apart from traffic on the M25 travelling up to home games) Nani is in a meagre 113th. West Ham’s Manuel Da Costa is at the bottom of the pile in 349th.

Remarkable Recovery

Euro 2008 was a hugely enjoyable tournament on a number of levels. Viewers across the globe were spoilt with a month of delightful, positive football. Spain were indisputably the best team on show, and deserved winner of their first major championship in 34 years. However, a personal highlight was the re-emergence of Croatian striker Ivan Klasnic, after he had spent most of 2007 recovering from 2 kidney transplants. It is a tribute to his strength of character and determination that he is playing the game at the highest level, and this summer moved to Premier League Bolton Wanderers. Since promotion in 2001, Bolton have searched Europe and beyond for firepower, with varying levels of success. The Hamburg-born striker will hope to enjoy a more successful tenure in gainful employment at the Reebok Stadium then these forwards endured:

Salva Ballesta: The Pichichi winner in 2000 with lowly Racing Santander, Salva won La Liga in 2002 with Rafael Benitez’s Valencia. After the success of German Fredi Bobic’s loan spell the previous spring, the Spanish international was hoping for a spell in England to revive his career. Instead, he managed just 1 start in the Premier League, a 70 minute outing at Anfield, and left very quietly indeed. Such was his impact; I almost forgot to include him in this feature.

Jardel : Portly

Mario Jardel: The explosive Brazilian forward had a goal-scoring record in the late 90s that was the envy of Europe. His 125 league games for Porto saw him plunder 130 goals, with his 2001/02 campaign at Sporting Lisbon showed statistics of 42 goals in 30 games. A 2-time European Golden Boot winner, he arrived at the Reebok looking decidedly portly and struggled to keep his weight down. He spent just 5 months in the North-West, making 7 substitute appearances in the league before being shipped out to Italian side Ancona. He impact in Italy was similarly minimal. Despite his outstanding strike-rate, he appeared only 7 times for his country. In recent years, the all the familiar demons of alcohol and drugs further accelerated his unfortunate decline. Sam Allardyce’s £1.5 million gamble backfired horrendously on him.

Javi Moreno: Another loanee from La Liga, Moreno was brought in as a replacement for the departing Jardel in January 2004. His heroics for lowly Alves in their stunning run to the 2001 Uefa Cup final earned him a big money move to AC Milan and international honours with Spain. 2 goals in that final give Liverpool the fright of their lives, but the Reds prevailed. After that night in Dortmund, it was all downhill for the striker as he flopped at the San Siro and at Atletico Madrid. Things were no better at Bolton, where he appeared 8 times in the Premier League, 7 times from the bench. Allardyce used Moreno as a last throw of the dice in the 2004 League Cup Final defeat by Middlesboro, but all the Valencia striker had to show for his time in England was another loser’s medal.

Les Ferdinand: Pace, power, raw strength and an eye for goal were all attributes one would associate with Sir Les. Unfortunately by the time he approached his 39th year, his powers were eroded considerably by age. This didn’t stop Bolton snapping him up on a free transfer in the summer of 2004. His main contribution was to score a tap-in after a hilarious mix-up between Tim Howard and Mikel Silvestre against Manchester United, but left for Reading just after Christmas in early 2005.

Jared Borgetti: Signed in July 2005, Borgetti became the first Mexican to play in the Premier League. His superb aerial ability seemed to make him an ideal candidate to fit into Bolton’s very direct style of play. Despite managed to score 7 goals spread across 4 different competitions, it was felt that that at 32 years of age, his best years were behind him. Often games would pass him by, and he struggled to adapt to the pace of the Premier League. However, he will go down in history as the first Bolton player to score a goal in European competition. Perhaps a move to England earlier in his career might have brought greater rewards, and showcased his undoubted talents to a broader audience. This goal against Italy in the 2002 World Cup is just a hint of what he was capable of.

Matt Jansen: So far this century, there have been a number of footballer’s careers that have been interrupted by a lack of focus, a fondness for the ladies, substance abuse and brushes with the authorities. However, in Jansen’s case it was an unfortunate motorbike accident whilst holidaying in Rome in 2002. He was lucky to be alive, but subsequently struggled to get his career back on track, understandably so after such a traumatic incident. Bolton signed him on a free transfer in early 2006, but the forward made little impact. His 29 minute cameo against Liverpool in April 2006 was the last time Jansen took part in a league match. Now still only 32, he is playing in the NPL Division 1 North for Leigh Genesis F.C. Jansen is an example of how delicate a professional footballer’s career is.

Grzegorz Rasiak: Despite his status as a lofty target man, the Polish international’s arrival at the Reebok raised a number of eyebrows when he joined from Championship side Southampton in January 2008. The idea was for him to replace the departing Nicolas Anelka, but it did not work out as planned. His 7 game spell saw him unleash 3 efforts on goal, and wore the number 47 shirt, the highest shirt number seen in the Premier League since squad numbers were used in 1993. That was until Nicolas Bendtnar stole his thunder with his number 52 jersey.

Heidar Helguson: The Icelandic international joined from Fulham in 2007 for £1.5 million. Again, his physical presence and all-action approach seemed to make him an ideal signing for the Trotters. However injury and a change of manager meant he was not as used as much as he would have liked and was shipped off to QPR permanently in January of this year.

Smolarek in happier times

Euzebiusz Smolarek: This versatile attacker arrived with quite a pedigree. He has a strike-rate of almost a goal every other game for Poland, and had a successful spell at Borussia Dortmund, scoring 25 goals in 81 Bundesliga games. However, he was a passenger in most of his rare appearances in white and could not make any impression whatsoever in the Premier League. He is currently a free agent, but still Bolton remain untempted to take him back to the Reebok.

Unfortunately for Klasnic, the thread seems to be continuing. His 86th minute winner against Everton won Bolton the 3 points a fortnight ago, and he was rewarded with a Carling Cup start against Chelsea. This is the last sighting of the Croatian international and with Bolton hovering just a point above the relegation zone, it’s hard to see Gary Megson adapting his system to try and include Klasnic. He is certainly a player that does his best work inside the penalty area, but he lacks Kevin Davies, or Johan Elmander’s physical presence. The signs are ominous, but Klasnic has come out of more taunting situations than this in his life. This is a challenge he will relish.
