Bombardier Aerospace is laying off 715 workers in its Montreal-area facilities because of slow order

Bombardier Aerospace is laying off 715 workers in its Montreal-area facilities because of slow orders for its regional CRJ aircraft.

The aerospace manufacturer announced the layoffs in a statement issued Thursday morning.

“There are not enough projected CRJ aircraft sales to maintain the current production plans,” said Guy C. Hachey, Bombardier Aerospace president and chief operating officer.

“Although we are in discussions with several airlines, we had to finalize our aircraft delivery schedule for the next fiscal year.

“We fully recognize the impact this additional workforce reduction will have on our affected workers and their families.”

Orders for the CRJ aircraft have dwindled in the last year because of the depressed global economy, Hachey said.

Quebec’s Liberal government reacted quickly to the announcement, calling the news “disappointing.”

But the province’s airplane manufacturing industry will rebound in the long-term, said Economic Development Minister Clément Gignac.

Bombardier is hiring workers for other areas of its aerospace production, which will give some laid-off employees options, Gignac said.

The aeronautical industry will pick up once the recession blows over, he added.

The 715 Bombardier employees affected by Thursday’s announcement will remain on payroll until at least January 2010, when the job cuts will start to take effect.

Quebec-funded worker assistance programs are available for laid-off workers, Gignac said.

Bombardier Aerospace has announced more than 4,000 layoffs worldwide this fiscal year.

The company still harbours hope that it will be able to sell its efficient C-Series aircraft to more airline clients.

It seems like Canadians would really get behind high-speed rail in Canada, so why don’t we? Right now, the only true high speed rail proposal is in California. Currently the liberal leader, Michael Ignatieff supports a high speed rail from Montreal to Windsor. I’m just surprised that in Canada, the home of Bombardier this idea has not yet taken off.

Pierre Beaudoin, president of Bombardier Aerospace, says dwindling demand will force the company to cut production.(Ryan Remiorz / Canadian Press)

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B) employees should expect additional cuts in aircraft production that might lead to more layoffs as Canada’s big aircraft and rail equipment maker adjusts to dwindling demand, CEO Pierre Beaudoin said Monday.

The Montreal-based manufacturer has already announced 4,400 layoffs this year because of lower demand for its business and regional jets.

The lack of orders will force the company to consider increasing that number, Beaudoin told reporters after addressing the Canadian Club of Montreal.

Details of the changes will be announced before the end of January. The company discloses its third-quarter results on Dec. 3.

“It’s a tough market, the commercial aircraft market, right now, so it’s likely we’ll have adjustments,” he said.

Bombardier spokesman Marc Duchesne later said layoffs could be avoided if the production cut isn’t too deep.

The company, which had 66,900 employees at the end of its last fiscal year in January, had hoped to avert regional jet layoffs by securing additional orders from several intense marketing and sales campaigns.

Beaudoin declined to indicate how successful those efforts have been.

The pace of business jet deliveries appears to be less than what the company had forecast as airlines cope with the impact of the recession on their business.

It had expected a 25-per-cent reduction this year. But deliveries decreased by 37 per cent in the third quarter alone, according to the General Aviation Manufacturers’ Association.

Some analysts have predicted Bombardier would further reduce its business aircraft production in the coming months.

On the Toronto Stock Exchange, Bombardier shares increased four cents to $4.65 in afternoon trading.

The 3 airlines bring forth an extensive Central American network to Oneworld, extending the alliance’s reach to almost 700 destinations in nearly 150 countries.

As part of Oneworld, members of the MexicanaGo frequent flyer program can now earn and redeem mileage awards on any of its partner airlines, with Conquer, Discover and Explore cardholders being accorded Oneworld Emerald, Sapphire and Ruby status respectively. The 100 million members enrolled in the frequent flyer programs of the other Oneworld member airlines will also be able to earn and redeem awards, as well as receive benefits on Mexicana and its subsidiaries.

To commemorate the joining, Mexicana has unveiled 2 aircraft, an Airbus A320 and a Boeing 717, in a special Oneworld livery at its hub at Mexico City’s Benito Juárez International Airport as part of a rebranding and marketing campaign. The airline will also have its logo added to the alliance and its member airlines’ marketing platforms, while featuring the Oneworld emblem on its aircraft, advertising, publications and stationery.

Together with its affiliates, Mexicana serves 67 destinations in 14 countries using a combined fleet of 105 Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier and Fokker aircraft from its hubs in Mexico City, Cancun and Guadalajara.

The term high-speed rail is one that politicians have been throwing around a lot in 2009. Earlier this year Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff put his support behind it, among many other bold and pricey visions for Canada’s future. For the most part Canada’s high-speed passenger transport infrastructure is, well, a joke compared to Europe – where automobiles are a minority in the transportation game. In Europe you can get almost anywhere fast and efficiently by train. Understandably most European countries, cities and states are much closer in proximity than that of North America.

But look at Russia. They are equally comparable in size, yet they are already much further along than Canada and the U.S.

This December, high-speed trains designed by the German conglomerate and adapted for Russian winters will ply the rails between St. Petersburg and Moscow. But Siemens hopes their final destination will be the last laggard of the high-speed age: the United States.

Russia is just one of many to beat North America in the high-speed rail game. Brazil is forging ahead with their plans to implement HSP, Poland, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Morocco, Iran, Israel and even, wait for it…turkey! Come on Canada, how is Turkey more efficient at transportation than we are?

Although there may be no concrete plans in place right now, a recent poll published in today’s National Post showed that Canadian’s overwhelmingly support high-speed rail.

Canadians overwhelmingly support high-speed rail and believe the federal government should provide the startup funding as well as investments on an ongoing basis, concludes a new poll.

The survey, conducted by EKOS for the Railway Association of Canada, found that 86 per cent of Canadians would strongly or somewhat support the introduction of high-speed trains in the country. Only nine per cent said they would be opposed.

Frank Graves, the president of EKOS, said the numbers show the issue can become a big political winner for parties that adopt it in their election platform.

The poll also found that 68 per cent of respondents said all levels of government should be involved in funding high-speed rail. Twenty nine per cent said the federal government should provide funding by itself, while three per cent said it should be solely up to provincial governments.

Realistically, there is no way any HSR is going to get built in Canada without full funding by the government. We don’t allow shady accounting like the French railways. VIA could risk its existence if it took on that much debt. There is no business case strong enough and no private operator large enough to justify taking a risk of tens of billions of dollars. HSR has to be built because the government believes that it is a missing infrastructure component needed for our economic well-being. There is no other way. If the government(s) can’t be convinced it won’t happen.

Similar to the CANDU debacle happening right now, our current government is complacent with allowing Canadian companies to sit idle right in front of them. Meanwhile they go overseas where their industry leading technology is appreciated and put to good use. The historic Canadian company Bombardier is on the fast track to dominating the high-speed rail game abroad.

Bombardier Inc. signed a landmark rail order in China yesterday, a $4.36-billion deal for 80 very-high-speed Zefiro 380 trains, of which Bombardier’s share is about $2.14 billion.

Bombardier is bidding on 15 other major rail deals around the world, including other projects in China, Europe, Britain, France, and Sweden, … and is bound to win some of them.

Full story here.

We are seeing changing trends in transportation worldwide. The 19th century was the era of steam trains. The 20th century was the era of the automobile. North America was at the forefront of these transportation modes, which made North America the most efficient and wealthy economies in the world.

Most of the world now realizes that oil cannot be produced in ever-increasing amounts and many countries are positioning themselves for more efficient use of energy. Most believe that high-speed rail is going to be an important component for maintaining a mobile society in the 21st century, yet Canada and the rest of North America lags badly behind. Is this a sign of the end of the economic dominance of North America and the United States in particular?

PLUNA Lineas Aereas Uruguayas (Montevideo) on October 23, 2009 performed its first test flight inside Chilean territory. The overnight flight linked Santiago de Chile (SCL) with Punta Arenas (PUQ) as flight PU 441 carrying freight (newspapers, magazines and documents) in a seat container configuration. The company used Bombardier CRJ900 (CL-600-2D24) CX-CRB. The cargo was flown on behalf of SKY Cargo (a subsidiary of SKY Airline) thanks to an agreement with that Chilean company. PLUNA is planning to operate passenger flights in Chile starting in December and will use the same aircraft on the route Punta Arenas -Santiago.
