Me in front of the Panchito B-25

Now I know what you’re all thinking, this has nothing to do with trains! But this plane is from the 1940s, the point in history when the steam age was coming to a close. But anyway, this is a WWII B-25 Bomber called the Panchito. Trains are my main preference, but my second obsession is WWII war aircrafts and machinery. My town was celebrating the WWII era last week, and there was all sorts of cool stuff going on. My family is always joking with me, saying that I was born in the wrong century(I like the 30s and 40s, I like steam locomotives, I wear a fedora, etc.). So I’m always happy to see some of this vintage machinery, especially when it’s actually working. I got a few pictures of the plane, and even some video! But I can’t upload the video on the blog! So I’m going to put it on YouTube, I’ll let you know when it’s up. But for now, enjoy these pictures and I’ll keep you posted!

During the past week Google made two significant splashes in the mobile arena. Their much heralded, bombing of middle America with Stealth fighters announced the landing of the “Droid” mobile device. Secondly, their acquisition of the leading U.S. mobile advertising company, Admob for $750M announced the full legitimacy of mobile advertising. When Google speaks, the rest of the industry should listen.

There was a time, not too long ago, when an entire industry seemed to get a simultaneous epiphany – that the Internet had created a legitimate “second” screen to television.  When this became “conventional wisdom”, the advertising Dollars, Euros and Yen started to shift from the “spray and pray” methods of television to the increasingly targeted methodologies of the web.

The same thought process can now be safely referred to as “conventional wisdom” for mobile.  The consumer is spending more time starring at their mobile screen, and less and less at their Web browsers, and even far less in front of the television.  With this reality, the web advertising giant is shifting more investment to the third screen  – which we should refer to as the consumers prime screen, the mobile screen.

We have transitioned from TV ad blindness (really a Pavlovian queue to go to the frig or bathroom), to web banner blindness.  We now, however, have the personal medium of the smartphone to reach consumers.

We have moved from the communal family device, the television, to a shared, yet personal device, the PC to the personal and un-shared device, the smartphone.

There will be some winners and losers in this new reality.  The winners will be companies that have invested ahead of the curve and have developed mobile and true multimodal next gen advertising vehicles.   Advertising and promotional technologies and processes that have broken with the “spray and pray” techniques of the past and capitalize on the true personal 1-1 advertising techniques, providing consumers ads that they want to view, will be the market winners.

The Android has positioned Google to be in your pocket, not figuratively, but literally.  The combined promotion with VZW and Moto, with stealth bombers creating a thinly veiled a sense of “Shock and Awe”, is a loud statement.

(Note to the Droid ad agency – Stealth bombers do not fly during the day, hence the word “stealth”)

VZW is a company with a great network and a lagging device lineup. Moto has raw engineering and production talent for mobile devices and has largely fallen off the radar screen in recent years.  Google, the dominant player in the present  generation of Internet advertising, is seeking to maintain and grow that position in the next generation.

So, Google is playing a pre-emptive attack strategy in mobile. VZW is playing catch-up to the iPhone.  Moto is, perhaps, playing their last “bet the company” card on Android technology.  Offense, defense and survival makes for three very motivated partners.

With the expected proliferation of Droids and other smartphones, Google’s purchase of ADMob is both stunning and obvious.   Another winner in this market shift will be, as I have written about in the past, the major social networks.

So who are the losers this past week?

On the Wireless Carrier side of the equation, Sprint and T-Mobile have to be concerned.  The gap between them and the leaders  (AT&T and VZW) is widening.   I  expect one less mobile service company in the U.S. in the next 12 months.

The emergence of Android platforms is likely the end of Palm as a mobile platform.  The Palm Pre never got the consumers attention and thus critical market share.

Too little, too late.

Palm will not be able to compete with Google and Apple in this round.  Their demise is written on the wall (in Graffiti).

RIM also has to be very concerned.  The launch of their touch screen device, the Storm was, well, stormy.   Blackberry has a strong market position and is well entrenched.  It has made significant growth in the consumer segment in recent years.  Will that growth reverse with maturing Android devices?  While Blackberry is in a much stronger position than Palm, the combined investment potential and application resources of Apple and Google will be a major challenge to RIM’s Blackberry.

All that said, RIM still commands over 20% global share in smartphones

Application developers will have to start to prioritize their porting and promotion of new applications between four major global platforms – Symbian,  Blackberry, Apple and Android.

It will be interesting to watch the global leader in the smartphone category – Nokia and their Symbian Operating System.  This platform is relatively unknown in the U.S. market, but is dominate in the rest of the world.

The next obvious question is how do these moves motivate other players in the industry to react?  Microsoft is desperately playing catch-up to Google in present generation search engines and advertising.  Their own version of a mobile operating system has made, at best, niche inroads.  Microsoft has suffered from execution issues and seems to be the biggest example of true  “innovators dilemma” in the last 20 years.

Yahoo has some mobile applications but seems to be a company unable to focus the attention necessary on any one initiative.  Perhaps some Corporate Ritalin is in order?

My conclusion is that both Microsoft and Yahoo will likely go shopping for a focused next gen advertising company.

Ad Agencies that have largely focused on managing creative production and bulk television ad buying are increasingly on the wrong side of the technology curve.  They are, however, in a good position with the depth of their industry relationships, to be a major force in the next wave of Internet/Mobile advertising,. The question is are they willing to move from their existing business models and develop the expertise in the methodologies, either in-house or through acquisition that can maintain their market positions in the value chain for the next generation.

The technology of smartphones, advertising and applications has now combined to make the next generation of consumer services and commerce a break from the past.  At least that’s what I hear from all of the “Conventional Wisdom”.

Notes on Droid Ad Campaign:

The more I thought about the Android “Stealth Fighter” ads the more I realized that that imagery was quite familiar.  I have added four additional videos for your viewing.  Theses video are the trailers for the 1953 and 2005 versions of “War of the Worlds” , the trailer for Armageddon and CNN footage of the bombing of Baghdad.

With these videos you can draw your own conclusions.  Please let me know what you think.

In my opinion, these images all have some resemblance to the Droid commercial.  In each of these cases the situation did not end well for the “entrenched” establishment.  Mass destruction was the result.  In one case a virus saved mankind.  This is hardly the message that a smartphone operating system might want to promote.    The droid-like figures eventually emerge to destroy everything in sight –they really do – you can Google it.  In the CNN footage a nation watched mesmerized by the imagery, only to learn that perhaps the wrong war was fought.

All interesting imagery for the first shot in a new generation of smartphones.

The sequin / leather combo: Lovin' or Hayden it?

Leather and sequins and blondes, oh my!  Courage exists in myriad forms, and petite Hayden Panetierre overcomes her inner cowardly lion by boldly going where I will never dare to go.

The banal regulations of yesteryear, long engrained in an unspoken fashion bible located on the top of some holy mountain—perhaps in the Hollywood Hills, have been tossed ever so gingerly out the window—for now at least.  Perhaps, in time, we will return to basic textures and patterns.  Until then, forget what mamma told you about never mixing patterns, taking off two accessories before leaving the house, and resisting the temptation to pull out that lone grey strand of hair.  Old wives tales have no bearing on Hayden Panetierre, nor should they on your style selections.

Audacious as Miss Panetierre’s black from head-to-toe look may be, she is certainly memorable (and not in the pejorative manner as yesterday’s throwback Bjork, who remains to this day regrettably etched in our minds).  The combination of a low-zipped, totally sequined bomber (see Gryphon) atop skintight leather pants (or legging alternatives, by spandex guru LnA or Alice & Olivia) serves to flawlessly flaunt a powerful silhouette that commands with authority.  A caricature of a real life cat woman and seemingly as fearless, Hayden’s unification of two statement pieces ultimately draws attention to the real show stopper in this ensemble: her luminous facial features and illustrious blond locks.

Today is Veterans Day—A day to remember and honor those who  have served our country. While cleaning carpets over the years, I have had the good fortune to meet many people who served in WWII– People who “Flew the Hump” ……Fighter pilots, bomber pilots.   I noticed while carpet cleaning in  Orange City, Florida one gentleman  still displays his leather jacket that was issued to pilots of that era.   My Dad was a crew chief on B 24 Liberators, serving in Italy and the north coast of Africa…..here’s a picture of the B-24.

My closest cousin John R. Martin of Deland,  served in the Army Air Corps and later the Coast Guard….he was the youngest personnel officer in the military at that time.    One of my best friend’s father, Morris Wender  flew on a B17 as a navigator, where he was injured on a mission.  One of my mentors in the carpet cleaning industry  Mr Bill Bane served in the Marines during WWII. 

I loved Air Force ROTC during my college years, but flat feet & eyesight kept me from continuing in the military.  The Vietnam War claimed many of my generation and left many veterans changed forever…hopefully we as a nation will always honor and cherish the men and women who defend our freedom, no matter the political views or opinions about the particular conflict in which they are engaged.

 Another War, the Gulf war in 1990 another best friend, Bob Iddings  served in the Air Force on C 130’s and was deployed to the middle east several times–he says he has seen all of tent life that he wants to see– He is now a pilot for Delta and I would hope to have a pilot like him when I am a passenger.    

As I think about this, the list continues to grow of cousins and friends who have served in the military during conflict and during peacetime…..doing their jobs so I could go about my life untouched…

My Hat is off to all who serve now and to all the VETERANS who served their country, my country, the greatest country in the world—the USA!!!!

På fredag i samfunnstimen så så vi en film om barnesoldater. Den heter “Wildchild” å handler om en som ble kalt for Jal, som ble sendt til Etiopiaav faren for og bli en soldtat med flere barn som ikke ante hva de skulle ut på. Alle trodde at de skulle få et nytt og bedre liv, sånn ble det ikke. Alle ble trent opp til og bli soldater.

Han var i krig i en veldig god stund før han ble reddet av ei dame som smuglet han til Kenya, å videre i filmen får vi se at han ble en musiker, flyttet til Storbritannia og ble kjent som en rapper.

Mens jeg satt og så på denne filmen så kom det flere tanker i hodet mitt, hvor fælt de har det der nede. Jal ante ikke engang hvor gammel han var i en voksen alder. Han tippa ca 25, men ante ikke helt. Søsteren hans hadde blitt voldtatt 3 ganger, moren døde under krig der alle de kom i fra og vi fikk ikke vite så mye av resten av familien hans.

Men fy faen, hvor forferdelig de må hatt det. Jeg har ei i klassen som har opplevd mye vondt innenfor krig, å jeg klarer ikke å sette meg inn i hennes situasjon og minner, det står i respekt av hvor godt hun klarer seg.

Jeg blir rasende når jeg tenker på at unger på 10 år løper rundt med et våpen som om det skulle vært leketøy, når det er våpen som dreper andre. Galskap sier jeg bare. Kunne jeg reist ned dit og stoppet det hele, så skulle jeg gjort det! Men når det er mange vasklige konflikter der nede så er det ikke bare bare for og si det slik.

Etter jeg startet på St.Olav vgs så har jeg blitt veldig interessert i U-landene som sliter med fattigdom, sult, krig og mye kriminalitet. Jeg vil jobbe som støttekontakt, jeg vil reise rundt å hjelpe andre. Kanskje det skjer en dag? Håper på det!

The release of the Lockerbie Bomber Ali al-Megrahi from the 20th of August sparked a debate between experts and Edinburgh locals on whether the act damages relationship between the US and Scotland. Megrahi was released from the Scottish prison on compassionate grounds by the Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill.

Recent appearances of the new American Ambassador Louis Susman show that the release of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi on compassionate grounds had strained US relations with Scotland, but likened it to a “little fight” between a married couple.

“We never anticipated his release,” he said. “I think if we ever thought we had a release, we probably would have asked for extradition early on.”

The US were trying to extradite the Bomber before the release without a positive result and that has made Edinburgh leading professors express their opinions on the matter.

Professor John Peterson from The Edinburgh University, Politics and International Affairs Department said: “I think that it was a very difficult decision for the Scottish government to make and for Kenny Macaskill to make. You will know that he was pressured by a group of senators. One of the last things Ted Kenndy did before he died was to sign a letter protesting against his imminent release. It’s worth remembering that more Americans died on that plane than British people.

I don’t think there will be any real long-term effect on relations between the United States and Scotland. I don’t even think it will have any effect on tourist traffic from the United States because when you think about it, it’s kind a fortunate timing. It happened at a time before anyone is thinking about where they’re going next summer or has made plans to come to Scotland next summer. I think all this talk about ‘this is going to have a permanent damage on Scottish American relations is way overblown.”

Although both sides the Americans and the Scots seem to have different opinions on the release the overall result is that there is no permanent damage to the relationship between the US and Scotland.  It is as Luis Susman said: “there might be fights in marriages but it doesn’t mean there’s going to be a divorce“.

Pakistan, Nov 2, 2009 (AFP) – A suicide bomber targeted workers queuing for their salaries outside a Pakistan bank and hotel on Monday, killing 24 people as the United Nations pulled expatriate staff from the northwest.

The second bombing to kill ordinary civilians in less than a week, the attack near the army headquarters in the garrison city Rawalpindi, showed the enormity of the threat that Al-Qaeda-linked militants pose in Pakistan.

The explosion outside a building housing a bank and the four-star Shalimar Hotel showered the area with human flesh, smearing blood on the ground and shattering windows, said witnesses.

“We were sitting on the second floor of our office. It was a huge blast,” Raja Sher Ali, a marketing manager in a local company, told AFP.

“Our building shook as if in an earthquake and when we came out there was smoke everywhere and body parts were thrown into our office,” she said.

A surge in bloodshed left more than 300 people dead last month as Pakistan presses a major offensive against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the tribal belt, where US officials say Al-Qaeda are plotting attacks on the West.

A senior police official said the attack was the work of a suicide bomber.

“The suicide bomber came on a motorcycle and blew up close to people gathered to get salaries. We found parts of a suicide vest and some body parts of the suicide attacker,” senior police official Aslam Tarin told reporters.

Deeba Shehnaz, a rescue workers spokeswoman, told AFP from the site that “the death toll has risen to 24″ with another 24 people wounded.

The attack off Mall Road was close to the upmarket Pearl Continental Hotel and near Pakistan’s army headquarters, where 10 gunmen kept up a nearly 24-hour siege last month that left 23 people dead and deeply embarrassed the military.

The plummeting security saw the United Nations announce Monday it was pulling out international staff from northwest Pakistan, just days at least 118 people were slaughtered in a car bomb in its capital Peshawar.

“They will be relocated. Immediately,” Ishrat Rizvi, a UN spokeswoman, told AFP, unable to say immediately how many staff the decision affected.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon declared the world body had raised the security level to “phase four” in the North West Frontier Province and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, a UN statement said.

“The decision has been taken bearing in mind the intense security situation in the region,” the statement said.

Last month the UN’s World Food Programme closed distribution centres serving more than two million people in the northwest because of security fears.

Stepping up its assault on the Taliban, Pakistan on Monday offered rewards worth five million dollars for information leading to the capture, dead or alive, of the country’s Taliban warlord Hakimullah Mehsud and 18 lieutenants.

The rewards for the TTP’s top-tier warlords were offered in a black-and-white government advertisement on the front page of The News daily and flashed on Pakistani television channels overnight.

“The activities of these brutal people, who have no fear of God, are bringing a bad name — not only to the Mehsud tribe but all tribesmen… and also give a bad name to Pakistan in the whole world,” the advertisement said.

“These people certainly need just punishment. They are the killers of humanity. Help the government of Pakistan to annihilate them.”

Mehsud, who took on the leadership mantle after a US drone attack killed his predecessor Baitullah Mehsud in August, headed the list with 50 million Pakistan rupees (600,240 dollars) slapped on his head.

TTP has been blamed for some of the worst attacks in Pakistan, which have killed around 2,400 people in a deadly wave of carnage over the past two years.

Ground troops have been locked in street battles for two days with Taliban in Kanigurram, one of the largest towns in South Waziristan and described as a major operation centre for the militant umbrella group.

Although none of the details provided by the military can be verified because communication lines are down and journalists are barred from independent access to the area, commanders say 306 insurgents have been killed.

When the bomb of so called Talibans backfired on its nurturers in General Headquarters, Rawalpindi, I wondered what is going to be the immediate response of the civil administration except banning the ride of two persons on motorbike? Frankly, I could not come up with a satisfying answer!

After a couple of days, I read in the newspapers that ban is in practise and no one is allowed to drop his younger brother to his school before heading to his own office. Indeed, the civil administration was sure that now terrorists would not be able to continue their damning activities. It could have been an effective measure to forestall suicide attacks. However, suicide bombers don’t use motorcycles. They simply butt in and explode themselves. So, the administration must not be blamed and the terrorists should be requested to ride motorcycles so that our police can find them out.

Terrorist have used, better to say misued, motorcycles many times to commit terror activities. But, at the same time it is also true that motorbikes are not the only vehicle used by them. Infact, thanks to large sums recieved from world’s largest democracy, now they use cars and advanced telecommunication technologies. They have become expert in disguise. A person in Pakistan Army’s uniform may be Talib, or a lorry driver can be a suicide bomber, having his lorry filled with explosives and heading towards a pre-decided public building to wreck it with himself. Every thing is hidden in the layers of smoke and blood. Nudity, is the only way to remove all of these screens and to make every thing clear.

Pakistan is an islamic republic, though only in papers, and Islam prohibits nudity in public places. ostensibly, it will not be easier for the government to ban clothing on the citizens. However, it is the easiest step which our government can do to curb terrorism in its buds. Since, no one would be allowed to dress up, security agencies will easily spot the person wearing a suicide jacket. If in the new legislation, nudity is accompanied by a complete ban on any kind of vehicle, then, any terror activity will simply be impossible. On the other hand, after being the first islamic country to develope nuclear devices, Pakistan will be the first country practising “complete naturalism”. After a successfull implementation, there will be a considerable reduction in carbon emissions and the world will be forced to accept Pakistan as a leader in fight against excessive CO2. Indeed, this law is a key to the new hieghts and horizons.

This law may not be welcomed in all quarters. In the beginning, inflation-hit fragment of the population may extremly oppose the law. But, this will not be a problem for the government as niether the anger of populace has ever been a problem for the government nor their wills and wishes have been respected by the leadership. On the other side, elite class have long been trying to be out of clothes under the excuse of fashion. So, briefly speaking, to give a decisive blow to the Talibans and to prove the superiority of “bloody civilians” over generals our political administration is only one step away!
