Sorry it’s been a while since I last wrote, I went away for the best part of a week and have been catching up since. So, Vienna. It’s absolutely brilliant! Here is what we got up to…

On Wednesday, Christopher and I flew from Manchester to Heathrow, because we’d left it too late to buy cheap train tickets and it turned out flying was cheaper. We got to Heathrow, hopped on a coach to Gatwick and stayed at a beautiful hotel. We had dinner (the best steak ever) and watched telly and generally had a lovely evening in a beautiful suite (huge!). In the morning we went to the airport. Christopher and I spent the best part of a day there. There isn’t much to do at airports, short of snoozing on pub sofas, drinking alcohol at inappropriate times of the day, playing arcade games, browsing duty-free watches and boozes and eating overpriced food. Oh, and reading the Bible in German in the chapel, then politely declining involvement in a Bible study class (Esther) for fear of missing the plane. Christopher is an excellent person to whittle away a day with – we had a lovely time, despite the circumstances! Eventually we got on the plane and flew and flew (I’ve only been on planes a couple of times so I’m still ridiculously excited about the marvels of modern technology and still gasp in awe at the clouds and the ground below etc) and got to Vienna, where Bev met us. We popped back to his, then went out for dinner (schnitzel – this is one of my new favourite things). We went back to his and had a fairly early night because of the long day.

On Friday we were given the grand tour of the city. So much walking! We went through the food market in the fifth quarter, where Bev lives, and walked into the centre. I’m not very good at describing cities and architecture, so all I can really say is that it was breathtaking, and that seemingly ordinary buildings from the ground became more and more grandiose as you looked up at the higher levels. We had coffees in a fancy coffee and cake place and experienced the fanciness of the public loos. We also popped to the Butterfly House, but it was shut, so we were forced to drink beer in their café instead. Dreadful. We went to a place one of Bev’s students had recommended as the best place for gulasch in Vienna, and boy was he right. Another thing I need to learn how to make! We went out for some drinks at Café Gitarre, where I discovered the brilliance of peach wine spritzers. When we got back we played Bomberman on the PS3 and Nina kicked our butts. BOMBERMANNN!

Saturday was Butterfly House and zoo day! My first visit to a zoo and definitely the right one to go to. Lions! Tigers! Bears! A sloth! Fruit bats! Yes. It was excellent. I think Christopher was amused by how excited I was. Bev, Christopher and I played some more Bomberman (quickly addictive) while Nina studied (some ridiculously complex multilingual erotic literature from a postcolonial perspective) with one of B and C’s friends from Hull University who also lives over there. One of Bev’s friends, a Norwegian experimental musician with a background in biochemistry came over and we headed out to see Isis, who were playing at an old factory that’s now a gig venue with several stages, a practice room, a sausage stand and a couple of bars. I was absolutely shattered, but it was an amazing gig. Afterwards we went to a bar that only plays bad metal music, and drank a lot of beer for a long time. Christopher and I decided it’d be a good idea to go home at 2am, but Bev stayed out until 7! I think I would have died.

Unsurprisingly, we had a late start on Sunday, and watched X-Men 2 while Nina and Bev made us gumbo for lunch (yet another recipe I need to get hold of). After we’d eaten, we left Nina to get on with her work and went to the Leopold gallery to look at the Schieler and Munch & The Unheimlich exhibitions. After that we hit the Christmas markets! First we visited the more touristy market at the town hall, which we had to do really, because it was very pretty and worth seeing. The trees were full of fairy lights and the town hall windows are made up to be Advent calendar windows, which is a great idea. We went to a couple more, stopping for plenty of mulled wine and sausage, and all in all it was a wonderful evening. Especially so because at the last market, Christopher took me to a little quiet spot under a canopy of fairy lights and vines, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Whee! Of course I said yes. I can’t imagine not being his adventure-buddy for the rest of my life, and there’s no-one makes me quite so happy as him. (Blergh!)

I’m very grateful to Bev for thinking so hard about what to do with us during our stay; he was a brilliant tour guide and knew all the secret little places to take us. Nina and Bev’s hospitality was amazing and their little cats were lovely. I’m also grateful to Christopher for putting up with me when I was such a whingey thing at the airports (I’m such a stresser!). I am very glad he still wants to marry me even though he knows how much of a pain I can be, heeh.

Internet is a great tool for research in any place . It is also our escape from work and research. During breaks I usually check personal e-mail and read news stories, but lately I’ve been visiting freerice.com and playing the vocabulary game found there. Why is a vocabulary Web site called “Free Rice”? According to these Reuter’s article by Paul Tomasch, creator John Breen originally created the vocabulary game to help his son prepare for college entrance tests, then later decided to make it a charitable cause and teamed up with the United Nations World Food Program.

Freerice.com is a sister site to Poverty.com. Twenty grams of rice is donated to the fund for every question you answer right. This got me thinking: I’d to play this game even if it wasn’t for charity. I wonder how many other Bomber Games like this are out there.

It took a little probing, but I found some online Bomberman Games for charity. Some of the online casino gaming sites offer charitable options, but I’m not going to promote bomber games of chance in this instance; don’t start gambling for charity. And joining a game of Texas hold ‘em isn’t a practical way to spend a fifteen minute break. However, if you regularly gamble, why not consider a charity game or two? Probably the Web sites you already use will offer some. Look for the links on these sites.

The key to preferring the right kind of game lies in your child’s abilities and interests. If they’re currently learning their ABC’s in school, any type of letters game or even memory Bomberman games would be a perfect fit. Bomberman games are also good for a variety of developmental levels. Think of your child’s needs and interests and keep them in mind as you carry on reading.

Of course, it’s not everyday when you get the chance to play the game of your childhood once more. I got that chance today though, with Remedy releasing the arcade top-down racer Death-Rally for a free download on their official site here. Of course, I went on a spree after that, and after playing and ultimately failing horribly at Death-Rally playing alternatively with my poker-playing friend, I got to playing other old time favorites, keeping however in the realm of splitscreen. Playing old games in single player is no fun when there is two of you.

So after managing to get a flaming career in the game made by Apogee and Remedy to an even more hellish end, singlehandedly mind you, we got to playing Atomic Bomberman, bombing our brains out for a few hours, always coming up top due to my poker-playing friend’s tendency to blow himself up. It’s always been a fun multiplayer game to play, and that does not fit only to this version of Bomberman alone, since all of them are tons of fun.

Next though, we’ve had Ignition, a turbo filled toy car racing game that is much more addicting than it really looks, considering the fact that I still play it as well as 5-6 years ago when I learned the tracks by heart. It’s a really fast game, especially in higher difficulties, since speed scales with how difficult it is. In this case, my poker-playing friend came up top, with a 3-2 tournament victory score, decided by a nice race of Ignition vs Ignition on the Novice difficulty level. Even so, those cars soar when boosting.

Adding it all up, putting Death Rally to the side since it does not have multiplayer in the present state and because we played it cooperatively, we are at a fair 1-all, perhaps to be decided with some other game, sometime else. I’ve had fun with older games, can you?
