      Taking cues from each other, Elpidio and Nick continued their academic pursuits as they led lives as revolutionary guerrillas.   Nick looked further into the trial and execution of Andres Bonifacio and began working on a book about the Philippine revolution from the perspective of a Moro.   He also tried his hand at fiction, completing a few short stories and kept a detailed record of daily events.   (Fr. Deon sent me a copy of the record, after we reestablished contact, and from that I was able to piece together the events that led up to Nick’s death.)   He never had the opportunity to publish any of this work.   He produced quite a volume under what I imagine were the harshest conditions (often, as he writes, “working all night with a blackout and minimal light”).   He had access to J. S. Alano’s library, which in spite of the bombing remained in tact, and in it, he found a copy of Bonifacio’s Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa (Love of Fatherland), a poem filled with sincere patriotism.   Within a short time, he could recite it verbatim and used parts of it in his daily speech.   Inspired by Bonifacio, he argued that his group of guerrillas ought to acquire a small press and publish their own Kalayaan or newspaper, but didn’t find any enthusiasm for the idea.   At the time, he didn’t see that it was impractical, for even a small press would’ve been bulky and heavy; of course he believed in the power of the printed word and was an adherent to the teachings of the Katipunan as spelled out by Bonifacio and his followers.   He was especially fond of Bonifacio’s Tagalog translation of Rizal’s farewell poem Mi Ultimo adios.   Then you have to remember revolutionary guerrillas were required to fight.   Nick had signed on, and after a few raids preferred sentry duty, and he got that most of the time.   Sentry duty proved very difficult for him; given that he rarely slept; one can imagine what he was doing to his health.

      For a while, Elpidio collected folk songs.   He sung the songs, performed them for the group.   There were battle songs that could’ve well been composed for them.   They were often also portrayals of love, and critics of Elpidio’s singing mainly complained about his timidity.   Perhaps his singing was his way of getting over that.   Nick described his friend’s attempt at singing as a “hoot”, as in Hootenanny, even though he sang some songs in Spanish, such as “Ave Maria No Morro.”   Understandably, Elpidio’s songs were often fatalistic, and had about them strains of Woody Guthrie.   Imagine Bob Dylan under the coconut palms of Basilan, “A Hard Rain’A Gonna Fall” in Bahasa Sama.   He also sung songs in the Persian language, though I can’t imagine he could ever get all of the sounds right.

       I remember the first time I heard Dylan.   I didn’t think he could sing, so I don’t think Elpidio had to have stayed on pitch to please his audience.   Given the situation, they needed the amusement, and that was enough to launch Elpidio’s short singing career.   It was perfectly all right that he couldn’t carry a tune, or hadn’t perfected his Persian.   In his case, with a backdrop of violence, it didn’t matter that he didn’t sound like Bob Dylan, though that was his aim.

       Like Nick, as a guerrilla fighter, he was handicapped, and was notable more for his singing.   ”When he was a student of mine, I once saw Elpidio stand his ground without using his Kris,” Fr. Deon recalled.   (Maratabat, for a Moro, has always been about honor, “face”, dignity, sense of shame, sense of pride, ethics, etc.)   As I approached, I saw Elpidio stand up to a bully.   I could see him get pummeled.   I can still see the blood running down his face.   This wasn’t the first time the bully had beat him up, and I think most Moros would’ve considered Elpidio’s reaction reprehensible, or more damning, dishonorable, when he simply stood there and took it.   From the beginning, when his mother first brought him to Norte Dame and he was introduced to Christanity”…Elpidio clearly never converted…”he took his studies seriously.   Among all of my students he seems to have been the most impressionable.   I remember having many conversations with him about what Jesus would’ve done in various circumstances.   (Remember Muslims honor Jesus as a prophet.)   He listened; more than listened he took all of it to heart, and I think he was shattered by it because Maratabat is so engrained in the Moro psychic.   You see, because of me, he didn’t know what to do when the bully started hitting him.   As he grew older, I don’t think that changed.   I know that the problem haunted him.   I’ve been waiting for him to run amok.”

       Elpidio’s mother evidently shared Fr. Deon’s concern, but Elpidio was strong enough to contain himself.   But he would be the first to admit that as a guerrilla fighter he was handicapped.   And supposedly he asked Nick, “Doesn’t Jesus teach us to turn the other cheek?”   However, even before 1972, Elpidio was drawn into the Moro War, thinking that perhaps war exempted him from the teachings of Jesus.   After all he was a Muslim, a Moro from Bongao, where adherence to Maratabat was the expected norm.   So far he hadn’t been able to kill anyone, a problem for sure.   (He represented an anomaly.)   Their “jungle camp” was then situation in the ruins of J. S. Alano’s compound, on the edge of his equally devastated coconut plantation.   It offered them a sanctuary, and they would remain there until they were driven out.

Guten Abend, Gassenimpressionen.  Das ist mein Stichwort und da mache ich doch eine kleine Reise durch die Städchen Korsikas, die ich diesen Sommer besuchte.

Angefangen wird heute Abend mit dem Städchen: “Bonifacio” sehr malerisch an der Südspitze Koriskas gelegen. Hoch oben auf Kreidefelsen liegend mit einer natürlichen Bucht als Hafen dahinter.  Los geht der Stadtrundgang durch die Gassen auf Seite 2 mit 16 Photographien.  Viel Spaß dabei!!!

Working Mom October 2009 Issue

So Joanne Quintas, actress, make-up artist and mom, prefers to stay away from condominiums. “The fact that I have kids means that I shouldn’t live in a condo,” she says. “Otherwise it’s like living in a hotel for them. 1) Fika

I forgot how my sister and I ended at this place for lunch. I think she saw it when she was with her friends for a drink somewhere in the area.

Haven’t tried a Swedish resto in recent memory (does IKEA count?)  so it truly fit into the plan of exploring Singapore on weekends.

Food was ok but don’t think I will be taking a return trip anytime soon except to try their other desserts (see photos of what we tried below)

2) Azzura Beach Bar

This place promotes itself as a venue for hydrosports activities, sumptuous bistro, Singapore first coffee cocktail bar, state of the art entertainment club (based on the Sentosa ad). The club wasn’t operational yet when I visited in mid October. Some of the hydrosports activities offered : banana boat, flying fish, kayak.

Rich (Herrera), one of my friends from Manila, visited Singapore for a work-related activity and recommend that we catch up here for drinks. Some of his local friends also joined in the afternoon.

Place is cool, better than Cafe del Mar (in my view). Only problem is that I really don’t want to get a one or two skin tones darker and I don’t swim.

Anyway, that doesn’t take away the fun if I just wish to go for a drink or too on a lazy Sunday afternoon in south Singapore!

A colleague recommended this resto so tried it for Sunday lunch.

Finally, a place that offers great Philippine cuisine at a reasonable cost. Tried the sisig, Bicol express, lechon kawali and a few other desserts. Could barely walk after having a satisfying meal.

Hope you can try it especially if you are near the Outram/Chinatown area.

Quite interesting to see horses graze around the field.

If you are in the Bukit Timah area and have time to explore, try this cafe.

Pour la troisième semaine consécutive, le mouvement de grève, lancé par la CGT se poursuit à l’hôpital de Bonifacio. Des semaines de conflit qui ont été rythmées par des rencontres avec les différents acteurs du dossier : maire des communes, conseil général de la Corse-du-Sud ou encore services de la Préfecture. Mais les grévistes n’ont pas été convaincus. Ils attendent toujours un véritable projet pour sauver l’établissement, comme nous le dit Jean-Jacques Burtin, pour la CGT de l’établissement

Quest’ anno come meta delle nostre vacanze, abbiamo deciso un tour arrampicatorio in tutta la Corsica

1° GIORNO

Il 30 Agosto si parte e, una volta inbarcati a Savona, in tarda serata giungiamo a Bastia. Partiamo in tutta velocità verso la prima meta: a sud dell’ isola, Bonifacio per visitare le famose Bocchee per dare un veloce saluto alla costa settentrionale della Sardegna.

La prima notte la trascorriamo nel parcheggio di un campeggio in attesa dell apertura. Al mattino, dopo aver preso una piazzola, andiamo a visitare le varie insenature che caratterizzano Bonifacioe una bellissima fortezza con sbocco sul mare aperto, che veniva utilizzata come orrido punto di osservazione durante le battaglie.

La nostra visita a Bonifacio prosegue visitando il centro storico e successivamente un antico pozzo d’acqua dolce a riva del mare, raggiungibile da una lunga scalinata ricavata all’ interno di una scogliera.

Il primo giorno si conclude con un ottima cenetta e una chiacchierata con i vicini di tenda, che hanno trascorso con noi la giornata.

 2° GIORNO

Dopo aver cercato informazioni sui più bei posti dell’ isola, ci siamo recati alla spaggia di Roccapina, che viene chiamata anche spiaggia dei leoni per la particolare forma delle rocce che la sovrastano, caratterizzata da acqua cristallina e sabbia bianca finissima.

Salutiamo gli amici conosciuti a Bonifacio e ci addentriamo nell’ entroterra. Percorrendo le tortuose strade che salgono e ridiscendono le numerose vallette, davanti ai nostri occhi si presenta un paesaggio fantastico, con una vegetazione rigogliosa, i piccoli paesini arrocati sulle pendici delle colline e i suoi animali selvatici che occupano indisturbati la strada, riposandosi e aspettando le coccole dei visitatori.

Nel tardo pomeriggio, giungiamo alla prossima meta: il Col della Bavella. Dopo aver ammirato il paesaggio circostante ci mettiamo alla ricerca del prossimo campeggio che ci ospiterà. Scendendo dal colle vediamo la pubblicità di un campeggio,così ci dirigiamo verso il paesino indicato ma arrivati e dopo averlo osservato per un attimo non ci ha colpiti così ci rimettiamo alla ricerca.

Subito dopo 2 minuti vediamo un campeggio immerso nel bosco; ci fermiamo a domandare se avessero avuto posto per 2 giorni, ma avevamo già visto che erano vuoti. Dopo averci preso i dati entriamo e montiamo il gazebo.Veramente un bel campeggio selvaggio. La serata dopo una buonissima cena si conclude con una partitona a carte e via a nanne presto per essere attivi al giorno dopo.

3° GIORNO

Al risveglio ci accoglie un energico sole e dopo aver preparato una veloce colazione e gli zaini, si parte alla visita del col di Bavella. Arrivati, ci accorgiamo di quanta gente viene a visitare questo posto meraviglioso dalla quantità di macchine parcheggiate.

Davanti ai nostri occhi si presentano da più vicino folti boschi con profumi marittimi e poco più lontano enormi pareti granitiche che ci conquistano subito la vista.

Ci mettiamo a camminare per l’unico sentiero principale che porta alle pareti e che poi si divide per i vari settori e dove partono vari percorsi escursionistici.

Guardando la guida ci colpisce un settore abbastanza incassato che dovrebbe rimanere all’ombra a lungo, così prendiamo la traccia di sentiero e lo raggiungiamo.

Toccando la roccia capisco subito l’ottima qualità e, imbragati, iniziamo a risalire queste linee stupende su una roccia rugosa dove i piedi anche senza appigli rimangono ancorati dandoti modo di progredire con fiducia. Dopo  tante e tante vie il caldo sole sta arrivando così ci spostiamo e andiamo a visitare un settore esposto a est che per tutta la mattina è stato riscaldato dal sole.

La roccia è ancora calda e, anche se le nostre mani iniziano a dolere, continuiamo a scalare fino a sera, quando ritorniamo al parcheggio e ci dirigiamo al campeggio. Davanti ai nostri occhi ci appare una bella sorpresa: il forte vento che ha soffiato per tutto il giorno ha abbattuto il nostro gazebo così, dopo un paio di risate per l’accaduto lo ripieghiamo e lo sistemiamo in macchina.

Stanchissimi mangiamo qualcosa di veloce e ci sistemiamo nella nostra “macchina letto” e ci addormentiamo velocemente.

4° e 5°  GIORNO

Dopo un saluto ai gestori di questo delizioso campeggio, ci rimettiamo in marcia per la prossima tappa: Corte e la valle della Restonica.

Percorriamo nuovamente la strada principale interna della Corsica zizagando per curve e attraversando vari boschi fino a congiungerci ad una strada leggermente più grossa e iniziando a superare un susseguirsi di piccoli paesini.

Dopo 4 ore di macchina giungiamo a Corte dove il primo nostro problema da risolvere è un posto dove trascorrere la nottata così inizia la ricerca.

Visitati i 4 campeggi del paese, e avendoli trovati tutti pieni, ci dirigiamo verso i vicini paesi. Sulla strada rimaniamo attratti da una pubblicità di un campeggio che è descritto come posto silenzioso e con vista deliziosa così inseguendo i cartelli indicatori dopo 5 km ci arriviamo.

Ci colpisce e la prima cosa che dice Linda è che spera ci sia posto: e così è!!!

Troviamo una mega piazzola dove sistemiamo tavolini e tutto il necessario per la cena. Passiamo una serata tranquilla immersi in un posto silenzioso e dove il cielo, per l’assenza di luci vicine, ci regala una vista spettacolare sulle stelle che luccicano come se fossimo in alta quota.

 5° GIORNO 

Si parte alla visita della valle di Restonica. Arrivati iniziamo ad orientarci e capire dove fossero tutti i settori sparpagliati che questa valle offre agli arrampicatori.

Più ci addentriamo e più la natura è fantastica con un bel fiumiciattolo con acqua limpidissima, roccia arancione con striature o bianche o nere e con varie specie di alberi che con i loro diversi colori danno un tocco di bellezza in più al paesaggio.

Trovato con difficoltà un parcheggio sul ciglio dell’unica strada ci prepariamo per andare a scalare, ma ci accorgiamo subito che sarebbe stato impossibile per il forte caldo, così ci avviciniamo al fiume e scendendo occupiamo una bellissimo sasso a forma di poltrona che ci accoglie per un riposino pomeridiano e osserviamo la tantissima gente che si rinfresca tuffandosi nelle larghe pozze.

Verso le 4 il sole lascia la parete che per tutto il giorno abbiamo tenuto sotto controllo così, ci avviamo su per una traccia di sentiero.

La roccia è quasi uguale al col di Bavella ma molto più lavorata. Arrampichiamo fino al tramonto e contenti ritorniamo al campeggio dove ci cibiamo e passiamo ancora una notte rilassante.

 6° GIORNO.

Si riparte…. Anche se la valle richiedeva ancora un giorno per la visita per riuscire a terminare tutto il giro dobbiamo ripartire alla volta di Calvi, nella costa nord ovest dell’isola.

In un paio di ore con una strada comoda giungiamo, ma dopo aver chiesto a 4 campeggi e vedendo la gente ammassata sulla strada capiamo che non era il posto adatto a noi, anche perchè questa tappa dovrebbe essere rilassante e con una giornata dedicata alla spiaggia.

Con un po’ di rammarico, anche perché ci avevano detto che Calvi è un bel paesino da visitare, ripartiamo e ci dirigiamo a Porto, dove ci fermiamo per la notte all’unico campeggio, abbastanza squallido.

Montiamo il gazebo come al solito e qui la disavventura: mentre stavo facendo passare un tirante sopra ad un tronco, ecco che si rompe un ramo e cado a terra picchiando violentemente il polso.

Subito provo forte dolore fino a non poter più resistere così decido di andare a fare un controllo e vado con Linda alla ricerca di un ospedale. Osp… ci dicono che l’ospedale più vicino è a 80 km…..cosa?!?!?!?!?

Va bè…come fa allora qualcuno se si fa male??? ed è li che mi dicono che c’è un dottore all’inizio del paese così mi avvio e, arrivato al piccolo ambulatorio, aspetto in sala d’attesa il mio turno.

Continuo a pensare come possa fare una persona a diagnosticare una frattura seppur non avendo la macchina dei raggi….mahhhh…..già non mi ispira tanta fiducia!!!

Arriva il mio turno e dopo averlmi toccato e guardato il polso, con certezza mi dice….. don’t broken, che tradotto vuol dire non è rotto, mi chiede 40 euro per la visita e mi prescrive una benda rigida e antidolorifici. Via in farmacia …. Ma durante il tragitto continuo a dire a Linda che non mi convince quello sciamano. Compriamo tutto il necessario e fuori dalla farmacia Linda accuratamente, anche perché già una volta me lo ero rotto, me lo fascia.

Prendo un antidolorifico, che per me era adatto ai cavalli perché, dopo poco, mi sento svarionato e con una voglia allucinante di dormire.

Il mattino seguente dopo una lunga dormita getto via quell’antidolorifico e ci avviamo in spiaggia per trascorrere la giornata.

Proprio di fianco alla spiaggia c’è una parete attrezzata e guardandola mi viene un po’ di tristezza…. Me lo sentivo già che era rotto e quando sono tornato a Bergamo, dopo 5 giorni, c’è ho fatto le lastre ed ho avuto la certezza.

Purtroppo in Corsica sono restato nell’incertezza, e continuavo a pensarci, ma Linda, con la sua dolcezza e cura, mi aiutava a distrarmi e mi rassicurava dicendo che non era successo nulla.

Decidiamo dopo una visita al paese di Porto, che il giorno dopo era meglio partire e proseguire per il viaggio anche perché mancavano tre giorni alla nave del ritorno.

 7° GIORNO

Con fatica sistemo con Linda tutto nella macchina e ripartiamo per la prossima meta: il deserto…. Il deserto in Corsica??? È si…anche in Corsica c’è il deserto!!!

Costeggiando la costa nord ci fermiamo ad un paesino per chiedere informazioni su come possa essere raggiungibile il deserto. Ci dicono che si può arrivare sia in macchina, seguendo una tortuoso sterrato o con un lungo sentiero. La giornata è già quasi trascorsa così, dopo aver trovato un campeggio a Ostriconi che dista pochi chilometri dal deserto, chiediamo un piccolo angolino per la nostra macchina e per trascorrere la nottata.

Dopo una buona pastasciutta chiacchieriamo per tutta la serata con una coppia di persone italiane.

  8° GIORNO

Al mattino presto si parte per cercare il modo di raggiungere la spiaggia che c’è oltre il deserto.

Dopo mezz’oretta troviamo il bivio e ci intrufoliamo: la strada sembra ben messa fino a quando non giriamo l’angolo e ci troviamo davanti ad una strada si percorribile, ma con grossissime buche. Ci accostiamo a ragazzi che stanno tornando e chiediamo come fosse più avanti, e ci dicono che se andiamo piano e stiamo attenti non avremo grossi problemi.

Dopo un’oretta e mezza di sterrato a 5 km orari, giungiamo ad un campeggio molto grazioso, proprio a due passi dalla famosa spiaggia. Così domandiamo se hanno posto, ma ci dicono che sono pieni zeppi…. Va bé per il dormire ci penseremo più tardi, ci diciamo, e parcheggiata la macchina ci avviamo per un sentiero sabbioso verso la spiaggia.

Davanti ai nostri occhi appare un vero gioiello della natura…. Acqua cristallina e sabbia giallina finissima fanno i contorni a questo posto fantastico dove gli yatch lo prendono all’assalto.

Ci godiamo per tutta la mattina il caldo sole e io litigo un po’ con i dolori al polso, ma nel primo pomeriggio, dopo aver visto e rivisto quell’acqua pulitissima, decido di fare il bagno ugualmente.

Un po’ di dolori al momento ma poi non sento più nulla…..spettacolo mi dico!!! E così per quasi un’oretta sto in ammollo con Linda e contento esco a darmi una asciugata, anche perché è quasi ora di ritornare alla macchina e ripercorrere il tragitto fatto all’andata.

Lungo la strada di ritorno ci godiamo un tramonto spettacolare e, quando la luce del giorno ci sta abbandonando usciamo dallo sterrato.

Ci mettiamo in marcia per l’ultima, non aspettata tappa: Bastia dove ci attenderà la nave che ci porterà via da questa stupenda isola.

Per strada facciamo il grosso sbaglio di prenderci una pizza; grosso sbaglio perché non era per niente buona e l’abbiamo mangiata solo perché eravamo a digiuno dal mattino.

Non trovando campeggi in zona percorriamo l’arcipelago settentrionale alla ricerca, ma nulla. Così, trovato un parcheggino tranquillo, ci sistemiamo nel baule a dormire.

 9° GIORNO e 10° GIORNO

Al mattino una brutta sorpresa ci attende: il cancello del parcheggio è chiuso e quando una persona nota i nostri movimenti si avvicina dicendoci che era privato!!! La voglia di litigare non c’è, ma l’anziano proprietario continua a borbottare nella sua lingua, così gli diamo dieci euro e lui ci lascia uscire.

Dopo averci aperto si parte. Veniamo a sapere da alcuni biglietti pubblicitari, che una zona di Biastia è interessante da visitare per i suoi reperti storici così ci avviamo e, parcheggiato, abbiamo raggiunto il centro dove parte un piccolo tour descritto sul foglio.

Pensavo meritasse di più, invece, a parte un paio di chiese e un vecchio oratorio costruito sulla scogliera, per il resto è stato abbastanza noioso girovagare per strette viette senza nessun interesse visivo.

Nel tardo pomeriggio andiamo a comprare qualcosa da mangiare per il ritorno e arrivati al porto ci informano che la nave è in ritardo di 3 ore per mare mosso e per forte vento che gli impedisce di attraccare. Tranquilli ci sistemiamo in macchina aspettando e nel frattempo cucinando i gamberoni appena comprati. Che cenetta….

La nave è pronta dopo un po’ di ore a farci salire così, parcheggiata l’auto all’interno, ci attrezziamo di sacchi a pelo e cuscini e andiamo a cercare un piccolo angolino per vagabondare durante il viaggio notturno.

Sistemati davanti alla reception ci addormentiamo e al mattino una simpatica hostess ci avvisa del nostro arrivo a Livorno.

No…. Siamo già alla fine…ci diciamo appena sbarchiamo…. Questi momenti passano sempre alla svelta!!!

Ma tanti tanti bei ricordi rimangono e rimarranno per un po’, ora anche più indelebili avendoli scritti su questi fogli che sicuramente in futuro rileggerò e penserò a tantissimi momenti felici che questa vacanza mi ha fatto trascorrere.

Entamée il y a une semaine, la grève se poursuit à l’hôpital de Bonifacio. La CGT Santé se dit prête à durcir le mouvement, pour, assure-t-elle, « que le patient soit au centre des préoccupations ».Hier matin, une motion du personnel gréviste a été lue lors du conseil d’administration. La CGT se dit consciente des difficultés financières qui pèsent sur l’établissement et ne s’oppose ni à l’élaboration, ni à l’application d’un plan de retour à l’équilibre. Seulement les agents ne veulent pas être les seuls à faire les frais de mesures drastiques. Selon eux, les économies sont à faire ailleurs. Et ils ajoutent : « Enfermés dans un schéma psychorigide, nous risquons d’oublier l’essentiel : le patient ». La CGT a renouvelé à cette occasion la liste de ses revendications. Parmi les plus importantes figurent la mise en place d’un projet d’établissement en parfaite cohérence avec la réalité et l’ensemble des besoins du terrain, mais aussi l’ouverture des 30 lits d’EHPAD avant la fin de l’année et le maintien de la structure de Porto-Vecchio avec un retour à une capacité d’accueil de 60 à 68 lits. Une négociation spécifique sur les primes au personnel, qualifiées d’illicites, est également demandée. Le maire de Bonifacio, Jean-Charles Orsucci, qui est également président du conseil d’administration, a déclaré qu’il partageait les revendications des grévistes et qu’il était prêt à participer à une table ronde en préfecture. Le personnel veut en effet obtenir des engagements écrits de toutes les parties, et notamment de l’État qui ne s’est pas encore prononcé. Une entrevue est également prévue avec le président de l’assemblée de Corse. La CGT attend aussi une réponse du maire de Porto-Vecchio qui est directement concerné par rapport à l’antenne de l’hôpital installé sur sa commune.Pierre ciabrini

La iniciativa es de los panitas que andan empeñados en ofrecer opciones de entretenimiento a los residentes del Municipio Simón Bolívar, los mismos que todos los Miercoles ponen peliculas en la Casa de la Cultura (sí, los Jueves ya no realizarán los proyecciones, serán los Miercoles, en otro artículo escribiré de eso). y que los Lunes ponen para el disfrute de este estilo musical, Conciertos de Salsa también en la Plaza Bolívar, me refiero a Angel Hernández y Derlyn Sánchez.

Este concierto repleto de temas famosisimos de todos o casi todos sus albums, entre ellos Zapatos Resbalosos, Combate, Allá Cayó, Latex, Ska de Aká, La Danza de los Esqueletos y muchos, muchos otros, también con comentarios de los integrantes de la Agrupación sobre la trayectoria musical que han tenido y el enorme significado de su presentación En el Teatro Teresa Carreño.
