I parigini e le buone maniere

Un altro momento in cui la pseudo-mielosità del popolo parigino tocca il suo culmine è la pretesa del “Bonjour”.
Che c’ è di male a salutare la gente con un cordiale “Buongiorno”? direte Voi.
Il difetto morboso, rispondo io, sta nel pretenderlo questo sacrosanto saluto!!!

Mi spiego meglio: il parigino medio pretende che quando gli indirizziate la parola, per chiedere un’informazione, iniziate la vostra frase salutando con un “Bonjour/Bonsoir”; solo allora potrete formulare la vostra domanda o richiesta.
Se sarete talmente scellerati e la Vostra distrazione vi porterà a omettere la formula di saluto dalla vostra frase, il simpatico parigino non esiterà a farvi notare la vostra maleducata dimenticanza.
Se per esempio chiedete un’ indicazione a un passante dimenticando l’indispensabile incipit di cortesia e di saluto, il gentile sconosciuto al posto di rispondere alla vostra domanda vi risponderà con un …”Bonjour” in modo tale da sottolineare quanto siete stati maleducati a non salutarlo.

Caso paradigmatico di questa pretesa di buone maniere spinta all’eccesso dal popolo parigino è “Madame Bonjour”.
Si tratta di una boulangère/panettiera dove io e Valeria andavamo sistematicamente a comprare la nostra baguette quotidiana quando abitavamo nel quartiere Mouffetard.
L’arzilla Signora sembrava veramente progettata per schiaffare “Bonjour/Bonsoir” in faccia ai clienti, qualunque cosa essi chiedessero; il fatto che avesse una voce particolarmente acuta ha immortalato la sua immagine nella mia memoria.
Così se il cliente esordiva dicendo “Une baguette de tradition, s’il vous plait”, la vecchietta parigina, da dietro il bancone,  rispondeva “Bonjour” e il cliente doveva sistematicamente ripetere la sua richiesta…il tutto per la gioia di chi stava in fila ad attendere e a godersi queste scenette quotidiane.

Vamos fingir que a gente pode usar um casaco quentinho e que ninguém está fritando por aqui!?

Um bom dia,

Pra que as pessoas sejam mais leves, não levem tudo ao pé da letra, que não julguem sem conhecer, que olhem pro próprio umbigo de vez em quando, que respeitem as diferenças, que brinquem mais, se policiem menos…um bom dia pra quem passa por aqui afim de encontrar coisas que deixem o dia mais alegre e divertido. Só!

November 21, 2009 is the 37th annual World Hello Day.  Anyone can participate in World Hello Day simply by greeting ten people.  This demonstrates the importance of personal communication for preserving peace.

World Hello Day was begun in response to the conflict between Egypt and Israel in the Fall of 1973.  Since then, World Hello Day has been observed by people in 180 countries.

People around the world use the occasion of World Hello Day as an opportunity to express their concern for world peace.  Beginning with a simple greeting on World Hello Day, their activities send a message to leaders, encouraging them to use communication rather than force to settle conflicts.

“bonjour mon ami…” from southern france!

 using “rick steves’ provence & the french riviera guidebook“ (a.k.a. our “other” bible in southern france), vivien outlined a tour de southern france via our avis rental car: an opel. definitely a different experience for me… cause when i vacation, i tend to stay in one hotel/location for the duration of the stay and take a taxi. the long, windy and scenic roads from town to town were pretty fun to drive.

not knowing what to expect for the city driving/parking conditions, it was crazy and stressful! the streets were SO narrow and often-times one-way and it was shared by cars, bicyclists, scooters, cats and dogs all at the same time! in most intersections, they had these roundabouts that were a bit confusing as well… and just required you to pretty much close your eye and jump into the circle of death and drive around until you find the right road to get off to! you just had to pay attention to the many arrowed signs and pray you chose the right one!

total distance driven: 1234km = 766.772 miles
total spent on diesel: €106 euros = $158.73 USD
total number of swear words dropped: 11 “mutha F-bombs” :|

thank the Lord that there were so many things to ease my driving stress… paellas, poissons and pâtisseries, oh my! 

the places:

- paris

then a short flight to provence (southeastern region in france on the mediterranean, adjacent to italy):
- marseille
- aix en provence:  a happening place where one can enjoy people watching and modern shopping all while checking out some great museums dedicated to van gogh + cezanne.

- arles:  van gogh called this place home for some time. here is where we also experienced “le mistral” for the first time. passing through the valleys of the rhone and durance rivers, the wind that blew through the streets and the open courtyards were UNREAL! there were times when i opened our rental car doors and really believed the door would rip off from the sheer strength of the mistral!
- st. remy:  great cafés and even greater chocolates! (and van gogh committed himself to an insane asylum in this city).
- les baux

home of "château des baux"... a fortified castle built in the 10th century. one of the most beautiful historic castle/site in france!

- avignon:  we stayed inside the walls of this once fortified city. it is well known for its “palais des papes” (palace of the popes), where several popes and antipopes lived from the early 14th to early 15th centuries and “pont-saint bénézet” (bridge of st. bénézet).

a historical palace (which became the residence of the popes) in avignon, it's one of the largest and most important medieval gothic buildings in europe.

- orange:  seeing the theatre was seriously humbling. since we went kinda late in the tourist season, it was pretty much empty when we got there. and to enter this incredible structure… and taking the site all in gave me goosebumps + chills. to imagine what it must’ve been like in the past when it was filled to capacity and full of energy! the funniest part, was this lone cat that i had to take a picture of… so patiently sitting/waiting in seat 65 for some show to begin. hey andy, can this pic be submitted to http://icanhascheezburger.com/?

- isla sur la sorgue
- rousillion
- pont du gard (one of the many landmarks in the provence region that is on unesco’s world heritage list).  and man… when you see this structure it’s truly awe-inspiring. so beautiful, so rich in historic worth… and still standing after all these years! makes me realize how young any of the structures we might have in the u.s.

- uzes
- cassis:  a small, quaint seaside port city… it’s referred to as “the poor man’s st. tropez“. this place was definitely my fav! if i go back, i’d stay here longer for sure. the vibe in this place was so nice and relaxed! and after being in the larger cities of aix en provence, arles and avignon, coming here was a great change of pace. the restaurants and shops near the water and the ocean view were breath-taking. cassis is also known for their  magnificent ”calanques” (see picture below). when we return to southern france in the future, we hope to spend more time here so we can charter a boat to the callanque en vau and spend the day on the beach (pictured below viv) and swim the crystal clear waters! t+t, bring your snorkel, mask + fins and join us… oui oui!

after an aftenoon coffee + gelato, a stroll to the beachfront does a soul good!

i scream, you scream, we all scream for gelato!

after hiking 1.5 hours we arrived to callanque en vau. your own private beach!

and then off to côte d’azur (a.k.a. “the french riviera“):
- cannes
- monaco:  i have NEVER seen so many maseratis, bentleys, rolls royces, and aston martins in my life. i thought viv + i would get shot for driving our rental opel through here.

the casino monte carlo... where true ballaz go to play! there's an admission fee just to get in and gamble!

- eze village
- nice: definitely a tourist mecca. they had an incredible open market on most mornings which looked like pike place market times 10. and the beachfront here was off the chart. seeing the ocean’s color at sunset almost looked fake. viv + i visited the marc chagall biblical museum (prior to going, i had never heard of this artist and after visiting, i am now a HUGE fan of his work) and saw his 12 paintings depicting various stories from genesis + exodus of the old testament (he also has 5 paintings inspired by song of songs). all i could do was just stand speechless and be mesmerized as i looked at each of the paintings. you could literally spend hours looking at each drawing. so much was conveyed through these paintings (the user of shapes and amazing colors)… a reminder to keep being creative and explore how art and faith intersects in my life.

Um bom dia neon pra vocês!

I got really tired of having to go to the community building where there is a printer with two computers next to it in order print. Half the time I needed to print something, both the computers are being used up and I can’t print until one of them gets off. I’ve seen people watch youtube videos and play farmville. So, when it came to my birthday, I received a decent amount of money from my relatives and decided to buy my own printer! The Canon PIXMA MP560 sounded like the perfect printer for me. It was the cheapest printer I could find that was wireless, simple looking, and had two-sided printing.

What I saw when trying to add my printer... the printer was not listed, but the scanner was.

After receiving this wonderful printer of mine, I found out that my MacBook was not able to detect the printer. The printer was supposed to be detected by my MacBook through bonjour, but the only thing that showed up was the scanner, not the printer. I couldn’t figure it out for the life of me, so I decided to look online.

That is when I ran into a forum post on the Apple Discussion board. This post had someone having trouble trying to connect to their MP560 just like I was. I tried everything the people suggested, but could not get it to work. Pahu, the person who was helping the guy out, was the person who also tried to help me. He suggested that I have CUPS installed from Canons website. I installed it, the printer still wouldn’t show up. He then asked me if I had firewall setup or Parallels installed. Well, I never had my firewall setup, but I do have Parallels installed. Apparently, Parallels has a known problem to block the protocol that some Canon printers try to communicate through to the computer.

My first reaction… I do not want to uninstall Parallels because I bought the program and I use it fairly often for work and school purposes. So, I searched once again and found another forum post. This one suggested that I stop a Parallels service that was running in the background by opening Terminal and typing “sudo launchctl stop com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon” into it, without quotes.

This is what you are supposed to see when adding the MP560 as a printer.

Well what do you know? I opened the “add printer” dialogue again and it showed up after a good 10 seconds. So, when installing the Canon PIXMA MP560 Printer on a Mac, make sure you have CUPS drivers installed, MP560 Mac drivers installed, and parallels service not running by using the sudo command mentioned above (or just not installed period). Also, to print double-sided you will have to select the “duplex printing” option in the printer settings when printing. Took me awhile to figure out, but a quick search of the printers manual helped me solve that problem.

Okay so this is a lot of information, but it’s mainly to help anyone who is having problems with the same printer. As an extra treat I should let you all know that there is an iPhone app that allows you to print photos from your iPhone to the printer, wirelessly. Of course you will have to be connected to the same WiFi as the printer.

Rolling riffs, feet tapping beats and a ‘quaint mixture consisting of 3 parts suburb and 2 parts platteland’ make up the phenomenon that is Ashtray Electric, hailing from Bellville- they are set to rock and have started to take over the local scene…

The last time I spoke to Rudi from Ashtray Electric was back in January,  before they were signed to Rhythm Records and before they recorded their first full length album Bonjour.

I decided it was time to have a chat and catch up…

Rudi says that recording the album Bonjour “was amazing and stressful all at the same time. We had good fun with it and are happy with the outcome. We also learned a shit load what with it being our first full length and all.” Choosing his favourite track off the album “is a hard one.” He then swears  and continues “Personally, When Sex becomes a Sport is my favourite. I’m not too sure about the rest of the guys though…” As for the next single, the guys haven’t really yet, but it “[might be] Lia.” thought about

They are “busy writing new stuff as they go along.” He adds “We’re shooting our new music video (for When Sex becomes a Sport) later in this week.” They also “recorded a song for a movie that’s getting released next year, called Spoon” Rudi continues “it was quite a challenge to write something that had to add to something that already exists. But it’s cool, and we’re very happy with the track…the Spoon track is pretty much just the next step after Bonjour. We experimented with some strings and stuff again, but nothing that doesn’t sound like Ashtray Electric”. They will also be “dropping the track for Spoon into the setlist from December onwards.” Watch out for that.

They “have pretty busy December ahead.” All their tour dates are available here. Then they have “some time off in early January.”

The highlight for the band this year has been “getting asked to play pretty much all 4 of the biggest festivals in the country. (Both Oppikoppi’s and Rocking the Gardens/Daisies)” Rudi says “I think that was pretty much the personal highlight. Other than that I think the album has been doing well and the response has been good. What else can one ask for?…”

They are going to end off a highly successful 2009 with a “Tour. A big new years show at Kenton-on-sea. And a little bit of holiday!”

That’s the way to do it. Rock on.
