The Japan Times published my op-ed article “Tokyo’s urban design role.” My argument is that Tokyo’s past urban design failures paradoxically make it a model for rebuilding existing cities and designing hundreds of emerging cities. In the context of climate change and global warming, livable cities can create a new balance between people and nature.

I talk about fireflies, Ginza rice and honeybees, modern bonsai, satoyama in the city, businesses and biodiversity, and how Japan can promote innovations in urban life, alongside achievements in popular culture and high technology.

Today’s Programming Praxis problem is an easy one. We’re supposed to give the prices of four items, that both sum up and multiply to $7.11. Let’s get started.

While we could just do a brute force test on all possible combinations, this would take rather long. So in order to speed things up we only check numbers that are a proper divisor of $7.11.

divs :: [Int]

Once we have the divisors, solving the problem becomes a fairly trivial list comprehension (the <= bits are another optimization to eliminate some identical combinations).

main :: IO ()

Post de NPR.org explicando el fenómeno:

You think you know why leaves fall off trees. Well, you’re wrong. It’s not the wind. It’s not the cold.

iStockphoto.com

It’s because trees use “scissors” to cut their leaves off.

iStockphoto.com

We call this season the “fall” because all around us right now (if you live near leaf-dropping trees in a temporal zone), leaves are turning yellow and looking a little dry and crusty. So when a stiff breeze comes along, those leaves seem to “fall” off, thus justifying the name “fall.”

Sounds reasonable, no?

But the truth is much more interesting.

According to Peter Raven, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden and a renowned botanist, the wind doesn’t gently pull leaves off trees. Trees are more proactive than that. They throw their leaves off. Instead of calling this season “The Fall,” if trees could talk they’d call this the “Get Off Me” season.

Here’s why.

Around this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere, as the days grow shorter and colder, those changes trigger a hormone in leaf-dropping trees that sends a chemical message to every leaf that says, in essence, “Time to go! Let’s part company!”

Once the message is received, says Raven, little cells appear at the place where the leaf stem meets the branch. They are called “abscission” cells. They have the same root as the word scissors, meaning they are designed, like scissors, to make a cut.

And within a few days or weeks, every leaf on these deciduous trees develops a thin bumpy line of cells that push the leaf, bit by bit, away from the stem. You can’t see this without a microscope, but if you looked through one, you’d see those scissors cells lined right up.

Enlarge University of Wisconsin Plant Image Teaching CollectionThe scissor cells are stained red and mark the boundary between the branch (left) and the leaf stalk.

University of Wisconsin Plant Image Teaching CollectionThe scissor cells are stained red and mark the boundary between the branch (left) and the leaf stalk.

That’s where the tree gives each leaf a push, leaving it increasingly dangling. “So with that very slender connection, they’re sort of ready to be kicked off,” says Raven, and then a breeze comes along and finishes the job.

So the truth is, the wind isn’t making the leaves fall. It’s the tree.

The tree is deeply programmed by eons of evolution to insist that the leaves drop away. Why? Why not let the leaves stick around? Why drop?

Raven explains that leaves are basically the kitchen staff of a tree. During the spring, summer and early fall they make the food that helps the tree grow and thrive and reproduce. When the days get short and cold, food production slows down, giving the tree an option: It can keep the kitchen staff or it can let it go.

If trees kept their leaves permanently they wouldn’t have to grow new ones, but leaves are not the brightest of bulbs (sorry!). Every so often, when the winter weather has a break and the days turn warm, Raven says leaves will start photosynthesizing. “They get some water up and they start operating and making food and then it freezes again.”

When the cold snap’s back on, the leaves will be caught with water in their veins, freeze and die. So instead of a food staff that’s resting, the tree is stuck with a food staff that’s dead. And when spring comes, the permanent help will be no help. The tree will die.

That’s why every fall, deciduous trees in many parts of North America get rid of their leaves and grow new ones in the spring. It’s safer that way.

So for leaves, falling in the fall isn’t optional. The trees are shoving them off.

Ieri i-as fi dat dreptate – ieri n-aveam blog.

Trebuie consumat in cantitati reduse.

What is this? What I am seeing? What does it mean? Ooooh. For more information, see the Week 3 Sketchbook entry on this blog.

Time: 6 hours. Paper: Sennelier pastel card. 19 x 26″. Media: Black, white and gray pastel. Actuals: a standard laptop run amok on MS Vista and a bonsai root trained on a circuit board:

Process: I love drawing on pastel card, basically like drawing on sand paper. It allows for many clean layers of pastel. If only it came in 54″ x 10 yard rolls. First layer:

Second layer. Drawing from bonsai, overemphasizing the circuit board and linear perspective because I liked it that way:

Third layer. Printed out bits of my Perl program (CTRL + PRTSC) graphically enhanced, (Print Mask for GIMPs). Pastel on back of print, then traced with ball point.

Most my artwork of the last 10 years falls into this genre so it was no problem coming up with an id

Most my artwork of the last 10 years falls into this genre so it was no problem coming up with an idea for a class sample drawing. I was looking forward to doing this assignment, completely prepared. At the very last minute, I mean the nanosecond before putting pastel to paper, I changed my mind, inspired by the paper size. I love drawing on Sennelier pastel card but the largest available size is 19 x 26″. I felt restricted by the small paper. It reminded me of the laptop I inherited which is a standard sized laptop but feels like being in a doll house compared to my big screen, wireless mansion of a desktop. Furthermore the laptop was already loaded with MS Vista: windows popping open, scroll bars, some sort of MS designers gone mad translucency thing that has to be seen to be believed, I mean, totally anathema to anyone who knows how to micromanage their computer experience. Ubuntu, BSD, Perl anyone?

Since 2001 I have grown ficus retusa bonsai over circuit boards, real plants grown over real pieces of circuit board, and made the ceramic containers for them. Right before I started the drawing, I attempted to email an image of my bonsai using the laptop. Who knows what happened. The image broke into multiple windows on the laptop screen, probably nervous pastel coated fingers on that itty bitty fingerpad and the whole mess looked like….well, a potential drawing. With the thought that it would be easier to create a program for sending images than using someone else’s idea of an image sending program, I added a bit of my own Perl code, a program that admittedly I never got to work correctly, digitally speaking, but has its uses as a decorative element. The best laid plans and all that.

My friend Endo Masahiro’s Sodateck has developed a combination LED and fluorescent grow light

My friend Endo Masahiro’s Sodateck has developed a combination LED and fluorescent grow light system for Japan. By combining the two light sources, Sodateck offers an optimal spectrum for plants. I like how his product catalog, in print and web, shows indoor gardening in a very contemporary setting: edibles and decorative plants in a chic wood and stone house with bicycles and other signifiers of modern style and living.

Based in Tokushima, Shikoku, he recently exhibited his indoor gardening system at the Gardex (International Garden Expo Tokyo). It was great to see the full range of what he is creating.

The systems are very elegant: brushed steel with two buttons, one for each light source type. Endo-san also brought some of his indoor plant creations, including modern bonsais like this moss on black stone tray. It seems clear that Endo-san is influenced by his friendship with modern bonsai master Kobayashi Kenji (小林健二) of Sinajina (品品).

Click the link below to see some more photos of his products, including hydroponic systems with his business partner Yakumo Trading.

These hydroponic buckets were very popular. I was tempted to eat the lettuce. It’s cool that such a small container holds four individual plants.

Below is Endo-san with Kobayashi Kenji. They are planning to create smaller light systems designed for bonsais and small urban apartments.

And finally here is a closet system which would also be good for small urban living spaces.
