Brett Helquist, who is most well-known for his illustrations in the Lemony Snicket A Series of Unfortunate Events books, illustrates Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. There is now a movie based around one of our library’s popular series, The saga of Darren Shan. It  is a well read series, with the borrowing being reasonably constant over a number of years. Many of our boys enjoy this series and the Demonata series. The first book, Cirque du Freak, is the compelling saga of a reasonably normal teenager’s journey into a much dark world than he has been living, the world of vampires. Darren and his friends go and see the banned Cirque du Freak. The Freak Show scene is really quite creepy. It is not just the blood, but also the way that the ringmaster manipulated the audience. After show has to make a choice/deal offered by Mr. Crepsley (Vampire) that will end in him saving his friend ’s life but Darren himself becoming a vampire. He enters a world filled with grotesque creatures, murderous vampires, and there is an unexpected ending.  The first 3 Darren Shan books Cirque du Freak, The Vampire’s assistant and Tunnels of blood are part of the Vampire Blood Trilogy. There are 12 books about Darren Shan in total. The horror genre has continued to bubble along with its devotees being a very loyal band so I think there is a ready-made audience for the new film.   I will be interested to have a look at how the film makers have handled the stories. I liked some of the quirkiness in the later part of the trailer.

Fallen, by Lauren Kate, has generated a lot of buzz and will be released tomorrow.  It is another supernatural novel that centers on a mysterious girl sent away to a reform school because she is “troubled”.  There she meets an equally mysterious guy and they find themselves in the ever popular drawn together but should not be together scenario.  The spin on this book is that the supernatural element has to do with angels.  I have to admit that I am interested, but being a sucker for anything supernatural, I want to take a break from vampires and see what kind of spin Lauren Kate has put on angels.  Check out the edgy and dramatic book trailer below:

I was looking at Youtube videos for examples of book trailers and clicked on We Know What Your Thinking by Darrell Bricker and John Wright.

Interesting facts about Canadians, that made me grin.

Yes I’m a big donut lover thanks to Tim Hortons.

I put my cell phone on silent when I’m relaxing or busy.

This is a great book for anyone that has to do research on Canada, or it would make a great table topper for the living room.

Kind of like a family fun time, learning facts about Canada.

Little kids love to learn something new and unique so they can go back to school and share it with their friends, or get online and chat about it with their little friends there.

Well. The short story caught Samhain’s attention, edits are underway, and I need a break for a minute from a paper I’m writing. Marketing is something I have ideas about, and have participated in, but not for a tale I told myself!

I really love book trailers, partially because they’re as visual as you’re generally going to get with writing and partially because they look like such fun to make. I really look forward to making one for myself and for the anthology if my other novella-writers are interested. However, I’ll have to wait until tag lines and covers and other instant-glance tactics have been developed.

I remember it was Christine Feehan’s book trailers that got me hooked on them. Hers are like real trailers, as opposed to a series of images and text, and are completely addicting! Can’t remember which was the first one I got into, but here’s one of the more recent ones. I haven’t read this book yet, but now I want to!

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl was published yesterday and it already has a movie deal!  According to this article on EW.com, it is supposed to be the next Twilight.  Beautiful Creatures is the first book in a five part series and centers on 16-year-old Eathan and his love for Lena, who just moved to his small town and is desperately trying to conceal her supernatural powers.  Check it out at the Library and see for yourself if this is the next Twilight (if there even is such a thing).  You can also check out the book trailer below.

Victoria, known as Vicki, was born in 1966, in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, to an Austrian immigrant mother, and a Dutch immigrant father. She has one older sister, Jeannette. When Vicki was 7, she moved with her family to British Columbia. In her early twenties Vicki moved to Western Washington and now resides in Marysville WA. She has been married to her husband Russ, for nineteen years and they have three children; Toby, who is fifteen, Kristina, thirteen, and William, eight. She has home schooled her children for the past nine years, and she also teaches elementary school art. Vicki’s other family members are, a Chihuahua, named Pipsy, two cats, Frodo, and Fritz, and two parakeets, Charlie, and Paulie. She did have a pet rat named Raymond when she started writing The Magic Warble, but sad to say, he has since passed away of old age. Vicki enjoys writing, painting watercolors, watching movies, hanging out with her family, and chauffeuring her kids around to their many activities. Her favorite author is C.S. Lewis, and one of her fondest memories is when she was twelve. She would sit at the kitchen table and read The Chronicles of Narnia to her mother while she cooked dinner. These magical stories were very dear to Vicki and she remembers wishing, If only I could go to Narnia like Lucy and Susan. An Interview plus

Today’s interview was done by the woman who has not only been my tour coordinator both times, but has, in the process, become a good friend and mentor. I had enjoyed the interview itself, but was very much surprised (pleasantly so) to see what she had to say in her introduction.

Scott Westerfeld’s highly anticipated steampunk novel, Leviathan, is getting rave reviews.  Check out this book trailer and if you’re interested you can check it out at the Library.

The Monster Variations by Daniel Kraus is a new take on the coming-of-age story.  Recently published, this author’s first book is unique, exciting, and really speaks to the reader.  Similar to The Lord of the Flies, Kraus’s novel looks at the lives of three twelve-year-old boys growing up during a summer of danger; danger not only from the killer roaming the streets and the newly enacted curfew, but from the barriers between child and adult.  The Monster Variations is a great new read.

While I was at the Florida Writers Conference this year, Julie Compton told me about the funniest book trailer she’d ever seen, the Everyone Hates Brad Meltzer trailer. I wrote about it the day after the conference.

And, I told an Internet friend of mine, an unfailingly cynical and lovely person who, if you eliminate Orlando Bloom, has never found anything worth gushing over. Tonight, as I tried to figure out what to put in the newest blog entry, she IMed me and said:

OK, so once upon a time there was this guy and he’s always sending weird links to that girl he talks to on the internet
one time he sent this link to a youtube and it was about a book, and it had people saying how crappy i twas

and the girl was like “This is stupid, I don’t get it”

so then the girl went to audible.com because she listens to audio books instead of reading because reading gives her headaches, which is another story

and she thought, Hmmm, I have two free credits, what was the name of that book with the stupid commercial?

the girl looked it up and it sounded kind of interesting, so she used her credits and got it

and it’s REALLY good

That she clicked the link at all is something of a miracle, given his joy of sending her links to Hurdy Gurdy man, but now that she’s seen the trailer and read the book, she has said she’s interested in more books by the same guy.

It’s said that the movement of a butterfly’s wings in Africa can eventually cause a major hurricane that devastates the east coast. I don’t know if that’s true, but Brad Meltzer’s book trailer went from someone to Julie to me to my friend, who may now tell someone else about it (not to mention to you, if you’re reading this blog post). That’s how word of mouth works.

Director Bill Thoma and I first conceived of a book trailer for my novel Artemis Rising in late August 2009. It’s been a wild ride and an amazing journey since then. We were privileged in our cast and crew on this project, and the collective talent of this group still surprises me. I’m pleased to share the fruits of our labor at long last:
