Poor book-keeping usually spells disaster for new businesses. Despite this, a recent survey, conducted by BookCheck, shows that many start-ups are failing to take their business accounting seriously.

The survey measured the views of UK Business Incubation (UKBI) Centre Managers, who are cumulatively responsible for supporting over 20,000 UK-based business start-ups. 100% of managers stated that maintaining regular management accounts was essential, but they also estimated that less than 50% of new businesses keep their book-keeping up to date. Alarmingly, around half of respondents thought that businesses “have in-trays and carrier bags full of receipts at the end of the year”!
