Have managed (with broken bones & dislocated fingers in hand) to get quite a lot of new media footage onto the main website and also this blog. Since it takes so long with my predicament – and is so bloody painful – won’t be updating with any more footage this side of the year.

Have a root around. There’s new photos on the Band Pics page on the website of two recent fabby gigs – one the Cancer Link Aberdeen and North (CLAN) Christmas Cracker Ball and the other a themed Corporate Event for a company celebrating 50 years in business, so they hosted a 1950s themed party where everybody got dressed up in the clothes of the era. Brilliant! There were at least 5 Elvises (is the plural of that Elvi?) and 4 Marilyn Monros, countless T-Birds and Pink Ladies and one (well there is only one) Frank Sinatra.

As well as photos on the website, there’s some of the 50s gig on here too under the Photos tab.

For your ears’ delight, there’s loads of new audio under the Live Audio page on here and for an audio and video experience together, you’ll find loads of new video with audio footage on our You Tube channel here and the last 6 videos are the newest the last 5 uploaded this week.

NEW YORK – The couple who crashed President Barack Obama’s first state dinner are peddling the

NEW YORK – The couple who crashed President Barack Obama’s first state dinner are peddling their story to broadcast networks for hundreds of thousands of dollars, a television executive says.

The executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the network does not publicly discuss bookings, told The Associated Press that representatives for Michaele and Tareq Salahi contacted networks to urge them to “get their bids in” for an interview. The executive said the Virginia couple was looking for a payment in the mid-six figures range.

Meanwhile, CNN confirmed that the Salahis had canceled an appearance they had scheduled for “Larry King Live” on Monday.

Network news divisions say they don’t pay for interviews. But for eagerly sought interviews in the past, they have offered to pay for access to exclusive material, such as pictures or videos from their subjects.

Representatives for the couple did not immediately return telephone and e-mail requests for comment.

Michaele Salahis is a reality TV hopeful trying to get on Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of D.C.” Her and her husband’s success in getting into the state dinner Tuesday without an invitation embarrassed the White House and Secret Service.

The agency acknowledged its officers never checked whether the couple were on the guest list before letting them onto the White House grounds. But it initially insisted Obama was never endangered by the security breach because the couple — like others at the dinner — had gone through magnetometers.

When it became clear the couple had interacted with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden during the event, Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan expressed concern and embarrassment. He said that while an investigation continues, the agency has taken measures to ensure the oversight is not repeated.

A White House photo showed the Salahis in the receiving line in the Blue Room with Obama and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in whose honor the dinner was held. Obama and Michaele Salahi are smiling as she grasps his right hand with both of hers and her husband looks on. Singh is to Obama’s left.

On Saturday, Rep. Edolphus Towns, D-NY, who chairs the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, called for a review of Secret Service practices and asked for a briefing this week.

Agency spokesmen declined to comment on reports that agents had visited the Salahis’ vineyard in Hume, Va., in search of the couple. Voice mail messages left Saturday at two separate telephone numbers for the Oasis Winery, south of Washington, were not immediately returned.

It is unclear what the couple told officers at the checkpoint that allowed them to go through the security screening. The Salahis lawyer, Paul Gardner, posted a comment on their Facebook page saying his clients were cleared by the White House to be at the dinner.

As regular as Santa coming down the chimney at Christmas, the travel industry gives a dire warning of hard times for the year ahead, prices rising, and bookings looking poor.

But 2008 has been an exception with what could be record numbers booking for not just winter holidays but putting deposits down for a summer holiday.

Nearly all traditional travel agents and on-line travel sites report a surge of interest with many translating into bookings around the Christmas period.

ABTA, The British Association of Travel Agents, who safeguard consumer interests for the travelling public in the UK, put the rise in holiday bookings down to the awful weather in the country last summer.

The weather ABTA refer to were floods that affected large parts of England, claimed four lives, and left a hundred thousand homes without water for two weeks in parts of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Insurance companies have warned that the floods will ultimately cost small businesses millions, and insurers have processed tens of millions in claims from homeowners. The British government has given emergency aid to the worst affected areas to help with the cost of the clear-up. Yorkshire in the north of England saw some of the heaviest flooding, with thousands of homes left without power and three people dying.

Included in the holiday areas that have benefitted from the booking surge are Malta, Tenerife, Menorca, Majorca and Lanzarote – some of the favourites from previous years.

Early reports from Malta suggest that the holiday island had a best ever year for tourism in 2007, and is now considering how she can broaden her appeal to entice more tourists to the Mediterranean sunshine isle. Malta Airport saw a record number of passenger flights arriving in 2007 thanks to the low cost airlines bringing in extra visitors, and 2008 looks set to be busier still as more competition arrives.

The Canary Islands are hosting a winter festival of classical music and hopes to boost its visitors before the summer begins. The fourth largest island of Lanzarote, named for its red mountains, will host several of the festival’s upcoming concerts. Lanzarote is well known for its picturesque volcanic landscapes. It is perhaps also just as well known for its futuristic appearance and controlled development of wildlife and plant life.

Another of the Canary Islands, Tenerife, is known for its great winter climate and attracts nearly three and a half million tourists a year to its scenic 2,034 square kilometers. Most of Tenerife’s tourism comes from the United Kingdom, followed by Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Italy and France, among many others. The island is home to many beautiful resorts, including the Playas de las Americas and Los Cristianos. In fact, recent legislation was passed to ensure that any future resort construction must either be of five-star status or offer resort luxuries like golf courses or banquet facilities.

It is likely that both Tenerife and Lanzarote will see their first quarter tourism numbers up for 2008, and if bookings continue as they have been can look forward to a good 2008.

So you’re getting married and planning your wedding day is in full swing. You’ve booked the venue,

So you’re getting married and planning your wedding day is in full swing. You’ve booked the venue, the band, the caterers, the cars, bought the rings, chosen the dress and outfits and you’re getting into the nitty gritty of the wonderful array of choices you probably didn’t realise you would need to make – the type of table linen, centrepieces, type of flowers, favours, veil or no veil and one of these choices is choosing the song that you will dance to as you begin your new life together. It’s personal and symbolic and can be as traditional or serious, or fun and frivolous as you like. Gone are the days when your first dance was a “first waltz”. Nowadays, anything goes. Couples are just as likely to have their first dance to Michael Jackson as Michael Buble.

But how do you choose?

Well you will have probably thought by this time what type of wedding it is going to be, taking into account both your personalities, your likes and dislikes, the views of family and friends and the type of atmosphere and/or special memories you want to create.

Traditionally, the first dance is a slow dance. Some couples do opt for a waltz (with the traditional 1-2-3, 1-2-3 dance steps) but the songs for a waltz have to be carefully thought out as very few songs suitable for a wedding have a waltz beat. With careful thought and planning though, this can be an absolutely magical and beautiful beginning to your new married life. If in doubt ask your band for advice. Atlantic Soul have performed various waltz first dances and would be pleased to give you pointers and ideas.

The vast majority of couples however opt for a ballad. Some know absolutely straight away which song they want as their first dance. It can be an old song or brand new but a song that is special to them alone. It could possibly be the song – “their song” – when they first met or some significant song that is special and has meaning to them alone. Most couples know they want a ballad but have trouble choosing one that is right for them, having no special song already picked. If this is the situation you find yourself in, we here at Atlantic Soul have got loads of experience and will cheerfully help you through the maze of songs until you have found “the one” for you.

A growing number of couples chose something that’s slightly wacky – definitely not a ballad and for these couples, they have definite ideas about creating an atmosphere of fun and laughter – something that reflects a slightly wackier personality and something different that they and their family and guests will remember as fun and memorable. Normally these couples have a definite song in mind. You’ve probably seen the couples on You Tube strutting their stuff to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” or wowed their guests with a fabulous dance routine to “I’ve Had the Time of My Life”. We have too because we’ve played both of these songs as wedding first dances. And yes the guy did attempt the lift at the end with the help of 4 ushers lifting the bride aloft her groom’s hands for the big finale. And believe me, both of these weddings stick in my memory because they were so fun and different.

Which brings me to the next subject that ties in with your first dance – dance lessons. A lot of couples nowadays opt to have a few dance lessons to coincide with their first dance (or get the bridal party involved too). This is so much fun but I would say without hesitation if you are having lessons to a particular song, please let your band know well in advance and provide them with a copy of the exact song you are learning as there may be different versions and different artists so there is no mix-up on the day.

We get the odd request here and there too for a special song, but the couple would like the song to be different in some way to make it memorable. We have also done this on several occasions for our lovely brides and grooms. With the musical maestros in Atlantic Soul and our wonderful musical director who is a fount of knowledge of all genres of music, we can arrange songs in a different style or genre or mood. Just let us know if you have something particular in mind. Remember this will take more rehearsal than usual as we are a fully live band, professional and dedicated to getting it right (not karaoke or backing tracks which need virtually no rehearsal). This is not something we do all the time because of the extra effort and rehearsal put in, but we’re willing to take it on if we have the time to do it.

As for songs to choose, if you Google “wedding songs” you’ll get thousands to choose from. If you have an idea of the type of thing you are after but just need steering in the right direction, if you have booked Atlantic Soul for your wedding day, this is all part and parcel of our dedicated service to you. Just ask for help and we’ll do all we can to make your wedding day and first dance the most special and memorable for you and creating exactly the right atmosphere you want.

You only get one chance for your first dance. Choose your first dance (and your band) well. Atlantic Soul will help create the special memories of your first dance to lead you into the “happy ever after”.

Most of our promotion for the villa is done using holiday-rentals.com. It’s a pretty good way

Most of our promotion for the villa is done using holiday-rentals.com. It’s a pretty good way of generating leads, but once you receive an enquiry it’s absolutely vital that you respond with detailed, clear and honest information that answers the exact needs of your potential visitors. Here are some suggestions for converting leads into bookings. (By the way, if you are a potential visitor, by all means have a read through – hopefully it should reassure you about our quality of service as well.)

1. Tell the truth. Yes, I’m starting with the blinking obvious. But I’m still amazed, from my own experience, at how many owners shy from providing honest information about their property. Let’s be clear – we’re not talking about lying here. But if you leave out critical information, provide out of date or misleading photographs, for example, then you immediately jeopardize the relationship with your customer.

2. Target your response to the enquiry. A couple with a dog are likely to have very different expectations from a large family group. Try and put yourself in their shoes. Are they looking for peace and quiet? Nearby shops? Modern appliances that take the heavy lifting out of washing and cooking? Try and pick out at least three points that you think will be helpful.

3. A secure property. Young families, especially, are keen to know about locks, gates and fences. Make a point about pool security as well. Is it alarmed, fenced or does it have a security cover?

4. Answer every question. Make sure you respond, in detail, to specific questions. How high is the fence? How large is the bathroom? How deep is the pool? They may not seem to be that important, but you can be certain that it matters to your visitors. Especially if they had a bad experience when renting a property in the past.

5. Show off your reviews. Don’t be shy. If someone wrote back and told you they had a great time and why, make sure that next year’s visitors get a chance to read the good news. Holiday-rentals.com has a good review page for each villa. If you think that a review is relevant to an enquiry, then by all means include it in your response.

6. Photographs. In our experience you can’t show potential visitors enough photographs (See 1). Try and make sure that you have every room covered. Bathrooms and kitchens are particularly important. As are bedrooms, living spaces, gardens and nearby attractions. Come to think of it, that pretty much covers everything. Upload your photos to an easy-to-use web site such as Flickr or Picasa and send the link with your response.

7. Information, information, information. If you have a welcome pack or your own guide to the area, include it as an attachment with your response. We also recommend including a satellite image from google maps or similar so that visitors have a good idea of the environment.

8. Languages. Try and respond in the native language of your potential visitor, even if they write in English. We’re fortunate to have fluent German and French speakers in the family. If you have to look further afield then try and get a friend or colleague to help you with some standard responses. If you reply in English, acknowledge, politely, the nationality of the correspondent: “It’s nice to get an enquiry from a German family,” or similar will do.

9. Costs. Be completely open, but not pushy, about the cost of the stay. Make sure that if you are converting currencies that you use an up to date exchange rate and quote it. If there is a deposit, be completely up front about the sum and the conditions. Most visitors are familiar and comfortable about these arrangements.

10. Convey your enthusiasm. If you were delighted and excited when you first visited your property, try and channel that enthusiasm into your response. Help the visitor understand that you are a private owner and they will get personal and attentive treatment during their stay. If you have a concierge or similar on site or nearby, put their mind at rest by telling them that they will welcomed in person and that someone will be on hand to help out during their holiday.

Ok, that’s all for now. What about you? If you rent out a villa, what tips would you add? And if you’re a potential visitor, what else would you want to know?

We’ve already taken a lot of enquiries and bookings for 2010. One major change in the messages

We’ve already taken a lot of enquiries and bookings for 2010. One major change in the messages that we’re getting is that people are more concerned than ever about payment security. At least one family told us how they made a booking one year (through a private advertisement) and turned up at the ‘address’ to discover that their dream villa simply didn’t exist.

We understand completely why people are so concerned, so here’s a list of reasons why you should have complete confidence in our villa:

Holiday Rentals Guarantee: When you book any villa through Holiday Rentals you can register for a guarantee of up to £3,300 or €4,000. Find out more: http://guaranteeuk.homeaway.com/

Reviews: We place great value in the reviews posted by visitors. We strongly recommend you read all the reviews to get a good idea of what’s suitable (and what isn’t) for your travel party: http://bit.ly/1ESKaU

Speak to the owners: That’s us. Between us we speak fluent English, French and German. If you need more detailed information just give Peter a call: 00 49 171 1441 209.

Finally, here’s a review from a French couple who visited in September this year. We had a long conversation with them before they confirmed, to make sure they had complete confidence in the booking and what they should expect when they arrived (you can also see this on the review pages). I’ve translated into English in the first place, but the original copy is also included below:

“I just wanted to thank you for our rental holiday which we really enjoyed.

In spite of my initial concerns, the property was exactly as it appeared in the photos that you provided. We were welcomed very nicely by the Concierge, and it was a lovely location. It was the start of a great week with lovely sunny weather.

I will recommend you to friends and relatives, and we’re thinking of booking again for next year. Thank you again.”

“Je tenais à vous remercier pour votre location qui nous a bien plu.
Malgré mes craintes, la location correspondait totalement à la description et aux photos envoyées.
L’accueil fut agréable, l’environnement magnifique… notre semaine s’est très bien déroulée et le soleil était au rendez-vous.
Je vous recommanderai à mes proches et pense renouveler ma location l’année prochaine.
Encore merci.”

Getting geared up (literally) for a brilliant 1950s and 60s themed event we have soon.

We do on occasion tie in if humanly possible with the themes to gigs we play at, especially if these are corporate events. We’ve done loads of 70’s themed gigs and gear our setlist to that era. And not forgetting the clothes. AND we have the pics to prove it (forget Jamie Afro, mine is definitely WAY bigger he he). We’ve done a couple of James Bond themed gigs too in the past. LOVE doing these songs. And as we started out our gigging life as a soul band, we’ve geared gigs to this theme, as well as Motown, Northern Soul, Funk, 60’s, jazz/swing/big band era. This is our first 50’s themed gig and we’re SO looking forward to it.

Just sorting out the stagewear for the ladies at the moment. The set’s all rehearsed and ready to go. Just hope the 350 strong audience are ready to jump, jive and wail.

So corporate bookers out there, if you’re looking for a dynamic professional live showband to put the pizzazz into your event, give us a call.

If you are involved in a Direct Sales business, you know that bookings are the lifeline of your busi

If you are involved in a Direct Sales business, you know that bookings are the lifeline of your business. Without having bookings on your calendar, you might as well consider your business closed. Often times it’s easy to acquire your first two to three hostesses by booking family members and friends but after that, how else can you increase your Direct Sales bookings?

There are a few tips that will help you get your calendar booked up and keep your business flourishing and growing if you implement them into your routine.

Tip 1 ~ Offer an Incentive. When you start booking your first hostesses, offer them an incentive to help ensure the party will hold. Create a hostess program that you are comfortable with by offering a free product, a discount or a credit based on party sales. Be creative and provide options for her to choose from. Think about your hostess and what you would like to give her for agreeing to book with you. Consider this, if you were in her shoes, would you get excited about what you are offering?

Tip 2 ~ Hostess Coaching. After you have booked your hostess, it is imperative to follow up at the very least, two times before her party to make certain she remains on your calendar. When you contact her, make sure she understands the different ways she can benefit from working with you, such as, how she will earn free product or credits. You can also send a reminder postcard immediately after scheduling her show, send her a letter along with a brochure and samples with instructions to show her friends and co-workers who may not be able to attend and another phone call a day before her party to let her know how excited you are to share your great product/service with her and her friends.

Tip 3 ~ Book From The Booking. After the introduction and prior to beginning your party, give your hostess her hostess gift in the presence of her guest so that they can see the great gift she has earned. You can than share how they too can earn a hostess gift by booking their own party with you. Now you may begin the “layering” process to entice your guests by mentioning your hostess program periodically through out the party. When it’s time to close, you can again ask each guest if they would like to earn a special gift by booking a party and inviting their friends.

Tip 4 ~ Follow-up. The most important lesson for increasing your Direct Sales bookings is to follow-up. Send a Thank You note to your hostess and each guest after the party. This will help establish trusting relationships and allow you to reconnect later on down the line for rebooking, referrals and reorders!
