Gore-Tex Scottish National Trail Launches

New Scotland End to End route is unveiled with accompanying book and BBC TV programme.

… a new long distance route linking Kirk Yetholm in the borders with Cape Wrath in the north west of the country linking various existing long distance trails to form a single 470-mile walk.

The trail is the brainchild of longstanding walking writer and broadcaster, Cameron McNeish, and, in parlour game parlance, is both a newly published book, authored by McNeish and a television programme produced by BBC Scotland and set to be broadcast over the Christmas / New Year period. …

Thus far the new route has no waymarking of its own, bar new plaques to be sited at Kirk Yetholm and Cape Wrath along with one at the Water of Leith Visitor Centre in Edinburgh and the Cape Wrath Trail stretch isn’t signposted at all.

In other words, for now at least, it’s mostly a line on a map …

Asimov’s Science Fiction: January 2013 Issue – The Family Rocket, James Van Pelt

This was a pretty good story. It’s only Sci-Fi in that it has the word rocket in it and some will certainly feel that it falls on the G-rated, maudlin side of things. But sometimes sentimental can be nice, and I think it works here.

Recommended for….. Pretty much anyone who wants a feel good short story, you might even get a little misty.

Asimov’s Science Fiction: January 2013 Issue – They Shall Salt The Earth With Seeds of Glass, Alaya Dawn Johnson.

I found the story underwhelming mostly due to the lack of closure. It reads like chapter 4 of a much longer book and I was expecting a full story.

I read Same Kind of Different As Me a couple years ago. But just found What Difference Do It Make on a library shelf randomly – I didn’t know it existed. I dog-eared the pages that had words I would have interacted with had it been my book. I share them with you now:

~ I ain’t got no way to read the mind a’ God, but I ‘xcept part a’ his business is makin it Christmas for somebody ever day. If all the Christians – I mean all of ‘em – got outta the pews on Sundays and into the streets, we’d shut the city down. We’d shut down hunger. We’d shut down loneliness. We’d shut down the notion that there is any such of a thing as a person that don’t deserve a kind word and a second chance.

~ Worst of all were the expressions of Christian sympathy. “You know, Ron, we’ve been praying for Deborah to be healed,” some well-meaning person would say. “And now she’s healed forever. Bull, I thought. She’s dead. In my bleakest moments, I might have even said that out loud. It angered me that people might think some pat little Christian phrase would quench the inferno of my grief. At other times, I realized people meant well, and mainly, spoke wounding words because they didn’t know what else to say. There were just a couple of people who did know what to say: “I can’t even imagine how you must be feeling, but I just want you to know that I love you.” Those were the people who climbed down with me into the pit of my grief and stayed with me. But the grief pit is a pretty nasty, slimpy place, and most people don’t want to get down into it.

~ (After Denver shared a very dark part of his past from when he was in prison he said this.) That’s why, though, when I think about Miss Debbit reachin out to me, my chest gets tight. I had told her staright up that I was a mean man, but she didn’t have no way a’ knowin how mean. I thank God today that she found the courage in her heart to love me enough so that someday I could tell you that even a black ex-con from Angola that stabbed a man could maybe someday do some good in the world if he gets a chance.

~ Miz Bush told us it was the desk where President Lincoln hisself had signed the Emancipation Proclamation all them years ago. I thought was really somethin – that I would be standin’ there, a black man, the great grand-son of slaves, now a guest a’ honor in the White House, standin here lookin at the spot where a great man signed the paper that set my family free.

~ One day I asked Mr Ron, “Mr. Ron, all these white folks be invitin us to their Bible studies. How come none of ‘em’s invitin us to their Bible doins?” I ain’t sayin’ it ain’t right to study the Bible. You got to study the Bible to know the rules of life. But I notice a lotta folks doin more lookin at the Bible than doin what it says. 

~ Blessin means you give a person a little gift to show ‘em you think they matters on this earth, and helpin is when you stoop down with a person and stay there till they can climb on your shoulders to get up.

~You never know whose eyes God is watchin you through. It might not be your teacher, your preacher, or your Sunday School teacher. More likely it’s gon’ be that bum on the street.

Seriously – buy these books. Wrap the two of ‘em up and give them as gifts, even if it’s to yourself. Lives will never be the same, might even be yours.

Anyway, back to gathered…

The digital magazine is brilliant! It is really well made, and includes videos, and is presented in a very easy to use way, that is perfect for iPad.

Each issue contains 3 craft projects with full photo instructions, just like you find in the magazine. I also like how all the links open in a window within the magazine so no switching apps!

In issue one the makes were : a sewn moustache, a screen printed top, and needle felted acorns
Issue two has: a crochet brain brooch, a Halloween printable party papercraft kit, although I think the boxes and moustache and lips on sticks could be used any time! There is also a fabric pumpkin to make!!

In issue one there was a video all about where liberty fabrics are made, and how they are made, it was really interesting, but what I’d really like to know is if there’s a factory shop where it’s made?!!?!
(If anyone know, please let me know!)

In issue two there is a video about life size knitting, which is very unique and really heart warming to watch!

I’m already excited for next issue!

Overall I’m really impressed, and if you have an iPad I would thoroughly recommend downloading it, especially whilst the 5 free issues is on offer!!
