Shawn prepares for a strong finish at the Niagara Falls Marathon 10 km event on October 25, 2009. It

Shawn prepares for a strong finish at the Niagara Falls Marathon 10 km event on October 25, 2009.

It was one year ago that doctor’s orders found Shawn Syms signing up for a local boot camp with a friend. “At that point I’d been fairly sedentary,” recalls Shawn. “My doctor told me to get more exercise in order to keep my blood sugar and cholesterol in check.”

During his initial foray into the world of squats and drills, Shawn discovered a love/hate relationship with what he found to be the most effective part: running. “Initially, it left me huffing and panting the entire way,” says Shawn. “But I eventually discovered that the more I ran, the more I enjoyed it.”

The running he experienced in boot camp also led Shawn to discover a competitive streak that he hadn’t realized he had. He frequently found himself one of the slowest runners in his group and decided he wanted to improve. Seven months ago, he and a buddy signed up for a learn to run clinic at his local Running Room. “It really surprised me how much I enjoyed running because I’d never really liked physical exercise growing up,” Shawn admits. “From that initial clinic, I went directly into the 10K clinic and have now just started with the half-marathon clinic.”

In only seven months, Shawn has run number of races including a 10 km in his hometown of Niagara Falls, where he had a personal best of 55 minutes and 44 seconds. He also had the opportunity to run the Brooklyn Bridge while on vacation in New York City this past summer. “The Brooklyn Bridge was bustling with pedestrians, sightseers, cyclists and runners,” recalls Shawn. “The bridge was an exciting, disorienting, yet phenomenal experience.

Shawn cools down after running the Brooklyn Bridge this past summer. He often enjoys combining traveling and running. In addition to NYC, Shawn has also run in both Chicago and Tokyo.

“I enjoy running while travelling; it can provide a great perspective on an unfamiliar city. I passed the 10K mark for the first time while running in Chicago this summer and got lost while running in Tokyo where I was lucky to find a Metro station that I recognized.”

Shawn says that learning to run has been but one chapter in a long story of coming to terms with his body as someone who grew up with weight and self-esteem issues. “I love taking clinics because of the camaraderie of running in a group and the structure and discipline imposed by the schedule,” he says.

With most of the races for the year wrapped, Shawn is focused on training for the Chilly Half Marathon in Burlington next March, which he wants to complete in less than two hours. “Running has increased the scope of what I dare to accomplish, and has influenced the rest of my life — I’m now more open to saying yes to the unexpected, to being more adventurous.

“If all goes well, I plan to train for the 2010 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon next fall. Sounds like a great way to celebrate turning 40.”

Shawn continues to go to bootcamp three days a week, while running an additional three times a week. “Between that, my day job, and my sideline career in freelance journalism, that’s about all I can fit in,” he says. Shawn even has a book review being published in the January 2010 issue of Canadian Running Magazine. To view more of shawn’s writing, visit his website at www.shawnsyms.ca.

“Running in a group is such a pleasure in and of itself. I’ve met great people — and more than a few kooky characters,” says Shawn. “And my doctor isn’t raising alarm bells about my blood sugar or cholesterol like he used to. If I’m still doing this 10 years from now, I’ll be very happy.”

“Long ago, men went to sea, and women waited for them, standing on the edge of the water, scanning the horizon for the tiny ship. Now I wait for Henry. He vanishes unwillingly, without warning. I wait for him. Each moment that I wait feels like a year, an eternity. Each moment is as slow and transparent as glass. Through each moment I can see infinite moments lined up, waiting. Why has he gone where I cannot follow?”-The Time Traveler’s Wife

How can I explain that while I have never met you, and you very well might be on the opposite side of the country, I know exactly how you are feeling. How can I show you that while everything feels overwhelming, confusing, and exhausting, you are not alone, and you are going to make it. I guess my only way to try is to tell you my story. My laughs, my tears, and my advice. I don’t know how you found your way here or what specifically you were looking for but I remember how I found my way to pages like this. I was reaching for a hand when I felt like I was drowning. A friend, a story, a tip to help me get through. And each little piece that I found made me feel like I could breathe again. Even if just for a few minutes. Girls, I know the feeling. And I’m here for you. Because I understand.

Take what you need from here. Message someone. Ask Questions. Cry. Do whatever you need to make it through. Everything is easier with a friend. And I’m here to be yours.

What’s up people! I am back again from China after making an urgent trip so thanks to everyone

What’s up people!

I am back again from China after making an urgent trip so thanks to everyone for their patience when it came to me responding to your e-mails and queries. I will be following up closely with all the enquiries that I have received since last week so check your mailboxes and Skype for my response soon.

In light of all my recent enquiries, I have received a few very ridiculous questions. If you are thinking of taking a program and you are still asking ridiculous questions, let me make one thing clear to you : The fact is, You want in.

Listen up. If you think you can get a better program out there then by all means, sign-up with them, become a PUA today. You live your life being “safe” all the time, you are going to achieve only normal, “safely” results. This problem is bigger than you think it is. Not being good with women is only one small problem, the NEED to control an outcome by avoiding risk will make you move a lot less in life and that logically and naturally gives you less results.

If you haven’t already noticed by now, there might be something seriously wrong with you. What I teach is different from PUA stuff simply because I am not a PUA… and what I teach works. That’s why I have a blog and there is TDDReview that is constantly updated with real-life results from real people. The truth is, if you want what our successful clients have, you will have to take the plunge, the first step. No one can guarantee you anything. If you can find someone who can, please tell me so that I can sign-up with them too. As far as I’m concerned, no one in Singapore and Asia can even sniff the kind of success we have when it comes to training men (as proven, time and again). This is why we are plastered all over the media, from ChannelNewsAsia to MTV to Radio shows etc.

The last thing I wanna say is this : Manage your expectations. Believe me, I have the ability to train you to date almost all kinds of girls. Models, celebrities, socialites, you name it. But whether you can do it or not is another thing. I didn’t get to the point of dating 8-9 girls at one time immediately. It took time and a lot of discipline to improve. X = X, a quality man will date a quality girl and vice versa. You cannot expect to be that be-spectacled turd with bad hair and over-sized clothing and still expect to hold on to a quality girl. If you say other people can promise you that, go to them. But one thing is for sure, I can train you to make that happen, without a doubt.

Risk-takers win more by simply taking more chances.

Look what Masterclass Alumni "MILFton monster" got for taking risks

I don’t know about you but as the year draws to a close, I am eager to make this one of the best and most unforgettable festive seasons of my life and I know I can because I know how to. I have celebrated a lonely festive season before. It sucks immensely. I didn’t have someone to share my joy with. I sent text messages to girls at those happy moments, only to feel crushed within minutes when I didn’t get a reply back. And as much as I tried to deny it, watching others around me have that privilege really hurt me inside. Which is explains why Troy, Julian, Nash, all the TDD Instructors and myself are selling out programs months ahead. The choice to sit on your ass and waste more of your life away is yours. But so is the choice to step it up and make your life skyrocket from here and you know you can trust TDD to help you make that jump.

And your first step can begin next week. Allow me to present to you :

Triad Of Champions : Triad Thursdays

Oh boy, where do I even begin!

After months of discussion and audacious planning, I am excited to finally present to you readers of A Life To Love and Troy Dizon Dating, my passion project, Triad Of Champions. My draft plan for the project is ready and I am excited to realese a lot more info before the weekend begins.

Stay tuned for details coming up in the next post. The first Triad Thursday is scheduled for next week, 26th November 2009. Triad Thursdays is a FREE event for all TDD and A Life To Love enthusiasts. Feel free to bring your friends along.

If I were you, I would clear out my Thursday next week and come on down for this event to experience first-hand, a 24/7 Attractive Culture.

Until then, watch this space!

Live and Love,

Wanna know why I’m freezing my tush off right now? Because I just ran across the Brooklyn Bri

Wanna know why I’m freezing my tush off right now? Because I just ran across the Brooklyn Bridge and back. Another goal bites the dust. Suck on that, November!

I did my very first Brooklyn Bridge Bootcamp today, and I’m impressed. I thought it would be really similar to Bootcamp Republic (which I looooove), but it was kind of the polar opposite.

BR is more focused on strength training with running as a way to get your heart rate up and your muscles nice & warm for the exercises. Tons of situps, pushups, lunges, jack squats, etc. It runs an hour and half long, twice a week with a third optional session. There are usually only 6 or 7 people in your class you get lots of personal attention, the trainer walks around and fixes your form, adjusts exercises for you if they’re too easy or hard. All in all, a good, solid ass-kicking that left me sore and satisfied. I burn around 550 calories per session

BBB is more like a runner’s camp with some strength training thrown in along the way. Sessions are an hour long and there’s no minimum per week. No mat training whatsoever (because, seriously, who’s going to run with a mat under their arm??), and we used resistance bands for the strength training part. I loved the trainer’s enthusiasm and the exercises he made us do were tough as all hell. I’m a weak outdoor runner (recent breakup with the treadmill), and it was pretty obvious as I was always one of the last 5 or so people who came stumbling to the stop points. But for having taken basically a two-week break from an intense workout, I think I held my own. Best part: 525 calories scorched in 1 hour! That’s a definite one-up on BR, but I think BR’s got the upper hand when it comes to strength training.

I loved both bootcamps for different reasons (cardio & calorie-burn vs. strength training & personal attention), and I’m pretty sure I’ll be mixing it up between the two once BR comes back outdoors. They went indoors for the winter and the group in my area has to train sans-shoes in a yoga studio. Meh. Doesn’t sound very intense. I have 13 more paid sessions with BBB, so I know what I’ll be doing till March.

And I somehow need to fit my 2-week yoga pass into all of this running around, because I seriously miss getting my stretch on.

I put my gym membership on hold for the month of December and splurged on a 4-week post-Thanksgiving / pre-Christmas indoor bootcamp with the same woman who started BBB. I think it’s just what I need before I go back to Austin, Texas for the holidays (brisket is a weakness).

Oh, uh, right, this is a food blog, too. Breakfast was a very satisfying serving of organic old fashioned rolled oats I scored for 69 cents a lb from the bulk bin at my favorite little health store, plus a cup of 1% cottage cheese (I’m upping the protein), and coffee with skim milk. No pictures because….it all looked kinda mushy and gross to be honest.

This last week we have had some terrible weather in the UK, with strong winds and heavy rain.

However, I still had 35 dedicated people turn up to my 2 bootcamps in the pouring rain!

I said to them at the end, that they should be proud of themselves for turning out in such weather and putting in the effort that they did. I also stated that there were probably hundreds of people throughout the country who didn’t even make it to their “warm and cosy gym” because it was “warmer and more comfy” to stay at home.

It’s this sort of commitment that gets people results. Fat Loss and Fitness does not only occur when the sun is shining, or at certain times of the day.

Training in a group environment certainly helps with motivation levels and commitment, as you see other people around you putting in maximum effort, and everyone is “in the same boat”.

Get yourself some training goals, a training partner, or even a bootcamp and remember that results come to those that want them, they won’t come to you!

Sweet lawsie mercy, it’s finally Friday. I thought this week would never end. I ended up skip

Sweet lawsie mercy, it’s finally Friday. I thought this week would never end. I ended up skipping the gym today from equal parts laziness and exhaustion. It’s been a difficult few days at work — lets just leave it at that. Sadly enough, it’s not even 9:30 and I’m ready to go pass out in bed.

…after I have the butternut squash roasting in the oven right now. I’ve made it 30 minutes without backing out, and I’m ravenous enough to eat the entire thing in one sitting!

Here’s what I have to look forward to this weekend:

A butt-whooping on the Brooklyn Bridge
At 7:45am tomorrow — IF IT DOESN’T FRIKKIN RAIN AGAIN — I’ll be running, squatting, lunging (and crying?) my way across the East River. I know that early Saturday morning is kind of ambitious, but it’s been a while since I’ve had a SERIOUS workout and I need it. I miss my old bootcamp, but they moved indoors to a yoga studio for the winter. And you have to workout without socks on. Doesn’t sound like a sweat-inducing cardiofest to me, so I’m passing until they move back outdoors.
BTW, this means I can cross off one more thing on my goal list for November. Score!

Laundry
Exhilarating, yes? I still have a small pile of high-maintenance clothes that need to be washed in cold water and then hung up around our apartment to dry. So. Annoying. But driers waste electricity and money, cause shrinking and fading, and blahblahblah I pretty much have to do it.

Two freelance design projects
I’m not really looking forward to this, but it needs to be done. I might go hole up in a nearby coffee shop I’ve been dying to check out and crank these things out in a couple of hours. Working on the weekend should be banned, damnit.

Dog park
My girl needs a good run around and a long, long walk. It’s supposed to be 64 degrees on Sunday…guess what we’re doing??

Baking two things
Numero uno is a super unhealthy Pioneer Woman dessert requested by my husband for his birthday treat. One of the ingredients is actually Mountain Dew. And I’m making a super healthy loaf of whole wheat bread for little old me…just cuz.

I’m off. No pictures of my squash because my iPhone’s battery’s totally dead, but suffice it to say that I’m eating 1/4 of a giant butternut squash smothered with a serving of Scottish oats, all topped with a big serving of almond butter. Aunt Flo’s coming to town, ya’ll. She makes me crave the weird shiz.

“The waterboy just needed some water!” -The Waterboy, starring Adam Sandler Water should

“The waterboy just needed some water!” -The Waterboy, starring Adam Sandler

Water should be all that you drink 90% of the time. Gatorade has been talked up for years, and it is needed in some instances, but the average fitness enthusiast has no use for the high-sugar drink. Soda’s strip the calcium from your bones and cause tiny eruptions in your stomach lining that can cause ulcers, acid reflux, and a pH imbalance. Coffee and caffeinated tea dehydrate your body and strain your kidneys and liver.

It’s ok to drink gatorade, soda, tea, coffee, etc. sometimes, but you should not depend on them to hydrate you.

Here’s why it’s important to be properly hydrated with water.

1. You actually lose the use of your fast-twitch muscles when they are dehyrated.

2. Blood needs a high volume of water to bring nutrients to your muscles for repair and recovery.

3. Drinking the right amount of water for you body actually speeds up your metabolism. (Faster weight loss!)

4. Water hydrates you 3x faster than any other fluid.

5. Your body is 75% water, so it absorbs plain water easier than a fluid that needs to be filtered by your body.

To be properly hydrated, each day you need to drink half your body weight in ounces of water. Example: If you weigh 200 lbs, 200/2=100, so you need to drink 100 ounces of pure water each day. Anything else you want to drink needs to be in excess of that amount.

Just a few notes before we start this article. I’ve made a few assumptions when I wrote this a

Just a few notes before we start this article. I’ve made a few assumptions when I wrote this article.

You already managed to install Windows on your Mac using Boot Camp.

<strike>Your “problem” is that Mac OSX keeps booting, and you want to boot Windows. If the problem is the other way around: Don’t worry, the same tips still apply. Just replace “Windows” with Mac OSX” and you’re set. </strike>fixed my article so it works for everyone.

So, you’ve run into the problem that, when your Mac boots, it another OS than you’d like it to boot. This isn’t really a problem, but more of a setting. In Boot Camp, you’ve got to choose which OS will be used by default. And because Mac’s truly are easy to use, this is easier to do than you might think. . Hold your “ZOMG Apple Fanboy insults, I’m a System Admin who works on a Windows Machine all day. But I also happen to own a Mac which I’m very fond of. Anyway, that’s not the point. The point is that it should be easy to solve your issue. Here’s how it’s done.

Method 1: Selecting your OS at start-up

The first method to boot your OS of choice, is by using the boot screen that you can use during the startup of your Mac. Here’s how to do it.

Start your Mac.

As soon as you hear the Mac startup sound, hold the option / alt key (I call it an alt key because it functions as the alt-key under windows. And it has ALT written on it, not “option”).

A screen will appear, asking you to choose between the operating systems installed on your Mac. Choose the one you want to load, using the arrow keys, and press the alt / option key again. The OS of your choice will now boot!

Method 2: Changing the default OS

In case you use one OS more often than the other, you’ll want to set it as the default OS, so you only need to use method 1 when you want to use the other OS on occasion. (OS being Windows / Mac OSX, obviously). Luckily, Macs are quite simple to use (here we go again) and even their software for windows is simple to use. So you should have no problem following these instructions:

For Windows

Open the Boot Camp tool. Since there are so many windows versions out there today, I’ll be unfriendly and tell you to find the exact location by yourself. One thing, though: If you use the quick launch / search bar under vista; mind the spelling: it’s Boot Camp, not Bootcamp.

In Boot Camp, you’ll already be ath the tab “Boot Disk”. Simply follow the instructions (select the OS you want as your default OS) and click apply.

The next time you start / reboot your Mac, the OS you just chose will be loaded by default.

For Mac

Click the “Apple” on the top left.

Choose “System Preferences”.

Choose “Boot Disk”.

Once again, follow the instructions by choosing the OS that should boot by default.

Feel free to close the window. You don’t need to press any “okay” or “apply” buttons. I’m sure, I’ve checked it for you four or five times to make sure.

Next time you Mac boots, your OS of choice will load by default.

And that’s it! You’ll now always be able to boot the OS you want, not the one that just happened to be set as the default OS after you installed Windows. Enjoy your Mac and Windows!

And that’s it! Vanaf nu word standaard de OS geladen die jij gekozen hebt, in plaats van degene die als default gezet werd na je Windows-installatie in Boot Camp. Geniet van je Mac en Windows!

And because Mac’s truly are easy to use.
