Right now, I’m waiting for the kids to finish breakfast and get them separated and squared away and then I’m going back to bed for a while! The last 4 days have been a blur of migraine pain, chest pain, passing out due to “a random syncope” ending up with a shot in the ass of demerol and phenergen.  At least they didn’t stick me in the Scottish war drum tube.

I’m trying to figure out which provider I’m going to use for Shaun’s website.  If you haven’t seen, his restored pipes have been amazingly well received.  His craftsmanship is beautiful!  The sites for pipes and pipe restoration that I’ve seen aren’t very… well designed.  Someone really needs to wrest MS Word from the person making their logos and then delete all the clip art.  Also, I have absolutely ZERO use for any site that promotes smoking anything but tobacco.  (You know, along with pipe supplies are “tobacco water pipes” and “custom glass art pipes.”)  This takes down the list of sites I use for reference to a little over a dozen.  I think there’s absolutely a niche for us on the web.

Should be fun.  If you have any suggestions on hosting services, I’d like to know!

A bootleg of The Red Devils live at the Mississippi Blues Fest at Le Claire Park in Davenport, Iowa, July 2, 1993, is a solid capsule of the band on the summer festival circuit.

It’s not an essential set by any means, and may be of interest only to the most hardcore of collectors. Most of the songs are found in better form and audio quality in several other live sets. What stands out is the band’s almost experimental jamming, coming more than a year into the original lineup’s never-ending tour schedule.

The audio recording comes from a KFMH radio live broadcast of the festival; the announcer mentions other performers that day included Dr. John, Jimmy Ley and Nappy Brown. The poor audio quality of the recording means parts of the music are a wash, though Butler’s vocals are right out front, as are the harp and Paul Size’s lead guitar.

Noteworthy in the set is the take on “Cross Your Heart,” which, for the first two verses, is actually Lester Butler’s “Pray for Me,” four years away from its wax debut on the 13 album. The groove is similar to most other live versions of “Cross Your Heart,” but when Butler leans into the microphone, he croons, “Hey baby, little girl please pray for me.” In hindsight, it’s surprising to hear the song; this might be the earliest recording of the 13 slow blues, and may be the only recording of the Devils working out a song that Butler would take for his own later.

It’s not until the third and final verse, after a Paul Size solo, that Butler nods to the “Cross Your Heart” lyrics. With Butler’s request to “play it again, Sam,” Size does Magic Sam-style “All Your Love” riffing to close the song out in style.

Whether Butler was just vamping, or the band was consciously working on the slow blues, it’s a tantalizing intersection of the Red Devils and 13.

The Iowa set is also of note for including the three new songs to be featured on the then-upcoming “Blackwater Roll” EP. The songs stand out for being the most high-energy in the set; whether that is because they were the freshest tunes for the band or because they were the furthest away from blues purity remains to be seen. An interesting aside is Butler’s introduction of the tunes, confirming the songs’ names as labeled on the “Blackwater” sleeve.

There is a freshness to “Blackwater Roll” — an unhinged Size solo and Bateman killing himself behind the drums, as Butler goes chaotic on the vocals and the harp solo, chanting, almost stream of consciousness.

The set also includes “Commit a Crime” — the Howlin’ Wolf song wrongly called “Louisiana Blues” on the 2 Meter Sessies. Bill Bateman keeps it from becoming a dirge with propulsive cymbal work, while Butler quotes “Spoonful” on the harp. The song clocks in at more than 9 minutes long.

Size really shines, as always, on some showcase blues: The instrumental dubbed “Smokin’” (in reality, a super-fast take on fellow Texan Freddie King’s “Sen-Sa-Shun”) and the Albert Collins showstopper “Backstroke.” (Butler’s note, “We kind of change it up a little,” is an understatement for this frantic jam.)

Another highlight is “Trouble’s Knockin’,” a “Tramp”-like groove that Butler introduces: “We’re gonna jam one now — I guess that’s what we’re getting known for.” From the performance here, this tune might honestly have been a spontaneous jam. “Who Do You Love,” taken at a slower tempo, and with harp, almost sounds like a military or fife and drum march.

And, as always, Butler’s song introductions are either humorous or head-scratching; his gem on this day: “We want to do a outtake off one of our albums. Do a tune called ‘Dangerous.’ We got an album out there called ‘King King.’ On Def American Records, it exists … out in the nebulum .. the planet void.”

(Audrey) Thane and I are not huge Bollywood fans, but we dabble in the genre from time to time. For one thing, the movies have gotten better over the years in our eyes as singing/dancing is down a bit while plot development is up. For another thing, it’s a good excuse for me to practice listening Hindi. Finally, it’s a cultural experience, and even if I hate it I often force myself to endure culture experiences.

The other night we watched Kaminey, a darkish film about the mafia/drug world of Bombay (i.e. Mumbai).

The movie was recommended by a friend, and it began as so many Indian dvds that we buy do—with a banner saying something to the effect of “please buy this movie, this is only a preview” flashing across the bottom of the screen. This continued to flash on and off throughout the film. We bought the DVD at a legit store, but that’s no protection against bootlegged copies in this country.

About 20 minutes into the film we were thoroughly confused. The main character appeared to be leading two totally different lives that didn’t fit into any possible time structure. We paused the dvd and read the description on the back of our bootlegged copy. Turns out the story features twins, played by the same actor. Upon finding this out, Thane exclaimed, “Geez! Couldn’t they have given one of them a goatee or something to distinguish the two?” Five more minutes of watching revealed that, indeed, one of the two had a goatee, light and skeezy but there nonetheless. Upon listening more closely, I also noticed that one character had a lisp while the other stuttered—obviously distinguishing features to anybody who can speak fluent Hindi (which is neither of us).

We understood the rest of the film fine, but I can’t say I recommend it. I enjoyed far more Slumdog Millionaire, for example, and Jodhaa Akbar. Jodhaa Akbar in particular I highly recommend because it’s about Akbar and the Mughal Empire—don’t take it as legitimate history but it’s a nice reimagination that gets several of the major features of his reign across.

News on New Moon Opening:

The Rolling Stones have released several live albums, and the recording from their peak period, 1970’s Get Yer Ya-Yas Out!, has recently undergone a deluxe re-release. In the original review for Rolling Stone, Lester Bangs said that “I have no doubt that it’s the best rock concert ever put on record.” He might have been right at the time, but just a few years later, the Stones went one better with the release now known as The Brussels Affair. For some reason, it’s only available as a bootleg, but it’s absolutely worth downloading.

It was recorded in 1973, following Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St, so the setlist is terrific. You get Brown Sugar, Angie, Honky Tonk Woman, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Street Fighting Man and Tumbling Dice. It’s the version of You Can’t Always Get What You Want which stands out though; it’s 10 minutes long, so, yes, it’s indulgent, but then melancholy is. It features guitar-work that puts the studio version in the shade, backing the verses with sad-but-bright descending notes. If you’re a guitarist, or just a fan of rock guitar playing, the whole gig is packed with highlights, and listening to it, I can almost convince myself that that evening Keith Richards and Mick Taylor played practically every sound you’d ever want to hear an electric guitar make.

The Brussels Affair is convincingly involving and completely silly. It’s all summed up in the second track, Happy, which Jagger introduces with a ludicrous lawks-a-lummee cocker-nee accent:

Mick: Keith’s gonna sing a song for yer called ‘Appy…

Keith then proceeds to start singing with a voice that sounds like the Cookie Monster singing the blues having gargled TCP, while the music rolls along brilliantly; despite seeming to contain a hundred guitar solos and campfire chorsuses, the song is over in at just over three minutes.

Afterwards Jagger says, sounding camp and drunk:

“Merci Keef, that was a good one. Woo hoo. Shake-amonay. God a mama.”

It’s rock n’ roll.

okay let’s get right to the facts: above is live video of the band playing “jesus glue” at the electric factory in philedelphia a couple of nights ago. below, you can download the audio of their show on the 17th in boston. if there’s one thing you should know about us, it’s that we fucking love glassjaw with all our bear hearts, so needless to say i’m sort of freaking out right now. the audio comes courtesy of the good people at the glassjaw.net forums. i haven’t listened to the entire thing, but from what i’ve heard so far, the quality isn’t amazing, but still worth the download if you’re a gj fan.

According to bossip.com, China, the world’s fourth largest condom market is having a serious issue with counterfeit condoms being sold in the country.

The police have made four arrests at the factory which was distributing the illicit condoms. The biggest concern, of course, is the fact that the condoms can generate both pregnancy and diseases if used during intercourse. Authorities say there were bare-chested employees using vegetable oil to lubricate the condoms and putting them into fiber bags without any sterilization inside the central Hunan province based factory.

Since March, the factory has produced over two million condoms labeled as “Jisson, Durex. Rough Rider, Six Sense and Love Card.” The police are looking for as many as one million bootleg condoms which have already been distributed.
