Thanksgiving is a time when we’re supposed to think about the things in our life that we’re thankful for but this is something that I try to do on a regular basis because I find that it helps to stave off my crazy. As a result of this frequent pondering of just how blessed my life is, my list of things I’m grateful for is extremely long. So for this post I’m just going to give you the highlights.

I’m grateful for my toothbrush, my pillow, my bed, pandora.com, my house and my car. I’m grateful for unexpected kindness, for friendly people, for the way the internet brings the people and things that I love together, for the fact that snow always melts and for the jolt of joy that a new pair of shoes always gives. I’m grateful for books and movies and tv shows that sweep me up and take me out of myself for awhile. I’m grateful for my country, my faith, and my education. And most especially, I’m grateful for my family. I’m grateful for them for a million reasons but here are just a few: I’m grateful for my family because they truly offer unconditional love, because we get each others sense of humor and laugh until our bodies hurt, because they would do anything for me and I would do anything for them, and because I know that no matter how bad things get I will always have them in my life.

Another thing I’m grateful for is the fact that tights have made a comeback, so here is an outfit with a beautiful pair of tights from Urban Outfitters. Also, I’ve been thinking a lot about layering skirts. Unfortunately the trend right now is for skirts and dresses to be crazy short and since that is neither pleasing to me aesthetically or in accordance with the doctrine of my religion I’ve come to the conclusion that layering skirts of different lengths would be a fantastic way of staying current and modest. Because I don’t have the time or money to make a whole array of layering skirts (like layering tees with cool trims and in different colors) I will just fantasize about it here on my blog. Because that’s what this blog is all about, right? My fashion fantasies? Which brings me to another thing I’m grateful for, this blog.

It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to post, but it seems that I am still fixated on the Fall/Winter 2009 Chloe collection. Just can’t get over the amazing shoes they put out this season. Today, I lost my voice talking about how amazing they are, so I had to immortalize them on Zebra Swag. It is really mind boggling how much quality shoes can affect my emotions… my heart was really beating faster while flipping through the shoes section on Chloe.com.

I usually don’t get so worked up about shoes that are inaccessible in terms of the price, but these are just out of this world. Butterflies in my stomach, no lie…

Is there a better over the knee boot than this?

These would last forever! They are still on the outer edge of accessibility for me right now… Maybe next year, I can afford such delights.

I love Thanksgiving.  This is the day to sit back and reflect on all that is right in life and make a vow to keep a positive attitude from now on.  Of course I can’t be positive every day of the year, but it’s still nice to get an attitude adjustment from time-to-time and today was the day.

Normally we celebrate this day with a big family dinner, but my oldest girl has been running a fever the past few days, so we stayed home.  Despite the change in plans, my husband, our girls and I had a fantastic day.  We ended up cooking a full, traditional Thanksgiving meal and I made the best dessert – Paula Deen’s pumpkin gooey butter cakes.  Delicious!  After dinner and a Barbie movie, we decided to put up the Christmas tree a little early.  The point is that we were all together and all healthy despite a slight fever and that’s all that mattered.  The girls even dressed in their chosen holiday outfits for our stay-at-home dinner.  Maybe it’s because we got them new boot and they felt the need to get out of the pajamas!  Check it a few photos of our day:

- Some new celebrities have been bringing the crazy lately, which is always fun. Adam Baldwin isn’t as wacked-out as all that, but there’s been some fun right-wing nuttiness on his feed lately, and some good links about how global warming’s a total crock. Nothing spectacularly Jayne-worthy, though.

But Jim Corr is really something else. I’ve owned a couple of this guy’s albums for years. Well, a couple of albums by a band his young hot sisters were in and where he was occasionally seen hanging around hoping to be noticed as well. And he’s got all the conspiracy crazy you could hope for going on. The New World Order, 9/11, more global warming denial, swine flu vaccines, chemtrails… Oh, and he also has a link to another site called “What Really Happened”. Given my blog’s usual hit rate, I can statistically expect about 0.03 of the people who read this to react in the same way as me: by hearing Richard Herring’s voice in their head saying “What reeeaaaaaalllly happened” and being greatly amused.

- And now the meaty part. The New Humanist provide a round-up of a recent parliamentary investigation into the evidence behind homeopathy, which heard evidence from people like Ben Goldacre and Edzard Ernst. Attention has been drawn lately to UK pharmacy chain Boots, with regard to their cavalier approach to marketing homeopathic remedies. And by “cavalier” I mean they admit to caring more about whether they can make money off something than whether it actually works as medicine.

There is certainly a consumer demand for these products… I have no evidence to suggest they are efficacious.

That’ll be Paul Bennett, their professional standards director. This all kinda sucks. Their defence seems to be that all they’re doing is selling customers the things they want to buy. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard drug dealers on street corners defending what they do in much the same way. It’s not really a comparable situation, of course – it’s much, much harder to overdose on a homeopathic solution than, say, heroin – but it may help highlight why this doesn’t really work as a defence.

Boots are the major pharmacy chain in this country. They sell a lot of medicines and similar products. Whenever I’m running low on toothpaste or painkillers, they’re generally where I go. I’m sure most of the stuff on their shelves is perfectly legit, but this means that there’s an implicit endorsement when they start flogging homeopathic crap as well. It gives these remedies and the claims they make significant credibility, to a degree really not merited by the scientific evidence of their efficacy.

The New Humanist article closes with a quote from the chairman of the British Association of Homeopathic Manufacturers, who asks:

If these products don’t work beyond the placebo effect, why do people keep buying them?

They don’t give an answer, but I assume this was because it’s too stupid a question to be worth bothering with. Here’s my answer anyway:

If these products don’t work beyond the placebo effect, then people keep buying them because of the damn placebo effect.

People aren’t doing clinical trials on this stuff in their own homes, they’re just drinking the water and noticing that they sometimes get better.

I have a follow-up question too: If these products do work beyond the placebo effect, why do large, well controlled clinical trials keep failing to detect any such effect?

So today, or rather, yesterday, my friends and I wandered into Crossroads Trading Company to try to rid our blues. I bought three dresses, a beautiful print knit bolero, and a bright blue peacoat. (I’m satisfactorily happier now.) On the way out, I spotted Red Marc Jacobs Wedges and a stunning pair of Gray Stella McCartney Boots. (Thank the lawd they weren’t my size, or i’d probably be out $250 by now.) But they were pretty reasonably priced at $100 (MJ) and $150 (SM). So if ever you are in the vicinity of a Crossroads, go check it out in all its glory.

Speaking of two of my favorite designers in the history of HUMANKIND, below are some of my favorite looks from their Spring 2010 runway shows. Stella McCartney’s collection was magnificent and by gods, I swear I will be there one day! Marc Jacobs’ collections (both Marc by March Jacobs and Marc Jacobs) were BOTH marvelous, although I tend to shy away from the more (dare I say it?) young-y looks of Marc by Marc Jacobs. Still beautiful to behold, however. Onward maties!
