With today being a holiday, I thought it would be fitting to celebrate this piece of work who obviously has no idea exactly which holiday it is.

Nearly a month after Halloween and worse, more than four months before St. Patrick’s Day, Homeskillet rolls up on the Light Rail in (I’m guessing) his idea of an O.G. pimp hat that more resembles the Lucky Charms Mascot’s attire.

Wait, no, Lucky the Leprechaun reminds me way to much of marshmallowy goodness and childhood. This guy reminded me more of this:

A little less "I'm going to give you a cavity," a little more "I'm going to watch you sleep tonight."

Add in his MC Hammer Pants and Flava Flav gold chain and I’m officially annoyed. Vanilla Ice had one hit and one hit ONLY for a reason.

On top of the ridiculous attire, this guys starts bobbing his head to his music (circa Eminem pre-rap battle in Eight Mile) and mouthing words so obnoxiously that I cannot help but watch and wonder.

I can only guess Vanilla Face is listening to:

A) Creed or

B) Nickelback

(I’m guessing Nickelback seeing as Creed has been kind enough to STFU for the last few years while Chad Kroger and his band mates who presumably live among his disgusting Canadian Jesus mullet can’t seem to stop churning out the audio vomit on a daily basis. But I digress…)

Kudos to Diane Pucin for excellent reporting on the decision by Fox to suspend Clippers Announcers Ralph Lawler and Michael Smith for Friday’s game vs. the Timberwolves.

In the Clippers 106-91 loss to the Grizzlies , the two seasoned announcers had this exchange:

Smith: “Look who’s in.”

Lawler: “Hamed Haddadi. Where’s he from?”

Smith: “He’s the first Iranian to play in the NBA.” (Smith pronounced Iranian as “Eye-ranian,” a pronunciation that offended the viewer who complained.)

Lawler: “There aren’t any Iranian players in the NBA,” repeating Smith’s mispronunciation.

Smith: “He’s the only one.”

Lawler: “He’s from Iran?”

Smith: “I guess so.”

Lawler: “That Iran?”

Smith: “Yes.”

Lawler: “The real Iran?”

Smith: “Yes.”

Lawler: “Wow. Haddadi that’s H-A-D-D-A-D-I.”

Smith: “You’re sure it’s not Borat’s older brother?”

Smith: “If they ever make a movie about Haddadi, I’m going to get Sacha Baron Cohen to play the part.”

Lawler: “Here’s Haddadi. Nice little back-door pass. I guess those Iranians can pass the ball.”

Smith: “Especially the post players.

Lawler: “I don’t know about their guards.”

Now Ralph Lawler has not missed a game in 25 years. Dedicated, wonderfully enthused and talented, Lawler has been overlooked in a City of Wonderful Broadcasters from Vin Scully to Bob Miller to Chick Hearn, etc. The Clippers pitiful performance as a franchise certainly has everything to do with that, but his case for inclusion into the legendary pantheon has surely taken a hit with this back-and-forth with the equally enthused but far less seasoned Michael Smith.

Were the comments overtly racist? My initial reaction was agnostic, figuring this was another corporate attempt at political correctness.

After discussions with my wife, (whose parents are native to Huanusco, Mexico) who likened the exchange to “white people that thing all Hispanic/Latin Americans are ‘Mexican,” I agree with her to an extent – I think apologies (even of the profuse variety) are required from both Lawler & Smith as well as the organization, but I think the punishment was a bit harsh and will now tarnish the legacy of a solid announcer.

And frankly, isn’t a lifetime of announcing Clippers games punishment enough?

Although I started this blog to keep myself motivated to write, I thought I’d do something a little different and post a video I produced for PerezHilton.com.

It stars Perez, Kim Kardashian, and his new reporter, La Coacha, along with some of my family members. The Borat-style mockumentary follows Coacha through Hollywood’s Little Armenia as she tries to track down Kim for an exclusive interview.

Borat (I’m not typing out the rest of the title)

Sigh…  It took me awhile to write the review because, quite frankly, I had no idea what to say.  Did I even like it?  Did I hate it?  It left me with a feeling of consternation and continuous head-shaking.  Did this really happen?  Were these people real or just actors?  I felt bad for the old Jewish couple at the B&B.  I absolutely hated the frat boys in the RV and thought they deserved a good junk-punch and I am just the girl to do it.  I was embarrassed for Americans and those that listen to country music (I do) when the old man at the rodeo felt obliged to speak his mind.  And the naked scene between Borat and Azamat….sigh.  It seemed like it was never ending and I got more disgusted by the second.  I imagine the taste of vomit I had in my mouth was probably similar to the smell of the fat guy’s balls in Borat’s face.  Eww.  My take – I didn’t like the movie.  I didn’t hate it either.  I just know I don’t ever need to see it again.

When I saw this video I had to share it with you. I was laughing all the time while watching it. It is great for newcomers to wine tasting as well for those advanced as you will see by the end…

The British Army is facing accusations as serious as those leveled against the US military at Abu Ghraib.

Let me offer some context of UK Army abuses in Iraq.

Only one British soldier has ever been sentenced to prison for detainee abuses in Iraq. He is Corporal Donald Payne. Above is a still from this very disturbing video which was released in June of this year into the inquiry of Baha Mousa’s death. A long-running and contradicting narrative followed this case since Mousa’s death in 2003 and the opening of the first inquiry in 2006. BBC has a timeline.

It seems that Corporal Payne and the six other soldiers aquitted during this inquiry may not have been the only British soldiers involved in abuse. I must say that these allegations are still just that – they are unproven, yet to be fully investigated.

One claimants says he as raped by two British soldiers, and others say they were stripped naked, abused and photographed. For the first time, British female soldiers are accused of aiding in the sexual and physical abuse of detainees.

The 33 new cases, which form part of a pre-action protocol letter served on the MoD last week, include allegations of mock executions, dog attacks, rape, exposure to lewd acts and exposure to pornography. The abuses are alleged to have occurred in 2003 – the time as Baha Mousa’s torture and death.

It is suggested it has taken so long for the allegations to come about because the Iraqi’s were fearful of reprisals during the British occupation of Southern Iraq. UK forces pulled out in April, 2009. Three camps are named: Shaat-al-Arab camp (shown below), Shaaibah British camp and Akka in Al-Zubayr.

Details of abuse:

In May 2003, a 16-year-old Iraqi was among a group of Iraqis taken to the Shatt-al-Arab British camp to help fill sandbags. When the Iraqi youth, who wishes to remain anonymous, and his friends had filled the available sandbags, a British soldier indicated that he should enter a room, from where he assumed that he was to retrieve more sand bags, he says.

On entering the room, he claims he saw two British male soldiers engaged in oral sex. As soon as the two men saw him enter, they started to beat and kick him, he alleges. When he fell to the floor, one of the men held a blade to his neck while the other soldier stripped him naked. Although he screamed in protest, the two British soldiers, one after the other, raped him.

They took off our blindfolds and I could see that we were surrounded by seven or eight soldiers. There were five of us. They asked us to pick fights with one another, or fight them. They were laughing at us and taking photos with digital cameras. They made us squeeze in pile-up, as in Abu Ghraib prison photos, while a soldier stood on top of us and started shouting and laughing. I felt so humiliated and treated as a toy they messed up with.

They picked further on a younger man who was good-looking. They made him strip naked and started messing with his penis and taking photos. “On one occasion I refused to pick a fight, then a soldier kicked me hard on my back, which made me fall on the floor. He started hitting me with a baton on my knees. Then he used an electric baton on different parts of my body.”

Of course one wonders now whether the investigations will publish the photographic evidence or if it will be used only internally.

Personally, I have no desire to see these images. I sympathise with arguments to say that only through release of such images can the world know the full extent of what happened, but I also doubt what we can actually and accurately “know” from photographs that we wouldn’t otherwise learn through full disclosure and description of events.

It is extremely unfortunate that both Google and Daylife image searches for “Shaat-al-Arab camp” result in this image.

But the madness, brevity, violence, stress, justified escapism, testosterone and “laws” of war are vastly different than in any other milieu.

It just seems to me that the internet has collided stories and images here that could be as valid a critique of 20th century war as any of the great American Vietnam films.

Interestingly, Shaat-al-Arab camp was erased by Google from their maps three years ago for security reasons. This action seems warranted as Shaat-al-Arab camp was a common target for insurgents – as Abu Ghraib was. Details are described half way through this article.

The following blog post is an edited version of a piece I wrote just before the release of Brüno last July and just after stepping down as a teacher from the private Christian school I worked at during the ‘08-’09 school year. I’ll be posting the piece, which was originally entitled “Real Men Aren’t Gay: Homophobia, Sexism & the Current State of Masculinities,” over the next several days in multiple parts (it’s kind of long).

(Very important disclaimer: I’m not suggesting you run to the video store to rent this movie!)

Part 1:

It’s crude. It’s graphic. It’s beyond politically incorrect. And it’s bound to make just about anyone extremely uncomfortable. Yet, Brüno, Sacha Baron Cohen’s most recent movie, due out on DVD later this week, may be one of the most important movies of the year.

Frankly, I don’t even find Brüno that funny. On a strictly comedic level, he doesn’t hold a candle to Cohen’s other two characters, Borat and (still my favorite) Ali G. But to evaluate Cohen’s work strictly in terms of its comedic value is to overlook its deeper agenda.

Sure, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan was arguably the funniest movie of 2006, but the film’s real strength was in its ability to expose the latent bigotries of American public life. And Brüno’s no exception: Behind all of its offensive humor, the film succeeds in exposing the deep-seated hatred for homosexuals in this country.

Having worked as a teacher at a Christian high school, an environment in which otherwise concealed hate is often embraced, if not lauded, I am inclined to say that of all the latent forms of hatred that live on in this country, none are as widespread and vitriolic as that currently harbored for homosexuals.

While Cohen doesn’t exactly “prove” this to be the case with Brüno—though I think he comes close—he goes beyond a simple illustration or a mere confirmation of hatred, and it’s this move which accounts for the true genius of his movie and his comedy in general.

Though perhaps capable of alarming us on some visceral level, simple illustrations and confirmations of hate leave the more important question of why we hate in the first place completely unanswered and often present hate as a whimsical emotion altogether devoid of meaning. But whether our hate is for homosexuals, Muslims, Americans or ponies, it always carries meaning, and Cohen, it seems to me, understands this (the nature of hate) as well as anyone in Hollywood today…

Never mind hoping for a single laugh out loud moment, Mr C and I laughed throughout the entire movie. We quoted it to each other for an entire day, and then we chuckled some more. I’ve forgotten it now, but would quite easily watch it over again.

Es el nuevo intento de Sacha Baron Cohen, realizador de Borat (2006), de concientizar a la sociedad norteamericana de las diversas enfermedades que hoy en día sufre, tiene el nombre de Brüno.

Brüno es un periodista fashionista gay austriaco que al perder su trabajo por haber boicoteado el desfile de modas de Agatha Ruiz De La Prada, decide mudarse a Los Ángeles para convertirse en el austriaco más famoso del mundo, más aún que Hitler.

Sacha Baron Cohen y el director Larry Charles, quien también participó en Borat, deciden mostrarle a la cultura norteamericana de una forma extrema las características que tienen sus ídolos pop que los hacen famosos. Y peor aún, por qué la gente acepta y apoya estas causas sin saber que son utilizados para producir más dinero a dichos “artistas”.Por otra parte realizan una reflexión sobre la batalla que se tiene en ciertas regiones de Estados Unidos por aceptar la cultura gay.

Brüno desafortunadamente no tiene el mismo impacto mediático y social como lo logró Borat, una de las principales razones fue porque la película del reportero kazajistání fue realizada en un momento indicado, donde el repudio a Bush era un tema global y la forma en que se analizaba en la película era innovadora.

Este filme está realizado con mismo patrón de Borat, en la cual los creadores Baron Cohen y Larry Charles realizan un guión con las situaciones que quieren presentar en la película. Después en un tipo de documental-cámara escondida, logran las escenas donde el único actor es Brüno, así captan las reacciones de las personas inmiscuidas a cuadro y empieza el show.

Un gran logro lo realizan al entrevistar a Paula Abdul sobre la beneficencia que realiza, con la cual se ha ganado mucha fama. Lo peculiar de dicha escena es que la conductora acepta sentarse encima de un albañil mexicano que está en cuatro patas simulando ser una silla. En otra escena vemos como Brüno por su afán de ser famoso adopta un niño en África, el cual intercambió por un Ipod, y lo presenta a un talkshow de afroamericanos, donde se ve cómo éstos al lograr un punto de identificación con una persona del medio (en este caso Brüno por adoptar a un niño africano), le entregan todo su apoyo y admiración, como en la vida real ocurre con famosos como Angelina Jolie o Madonna.

En la primera parte de la película Brüno hace todo lo que ve en las revistas que realizan los famosos estadounidenses para tener fama, como apoyar una causa altruista, ayudar a resolver el problema en Medio Oriente, crear vínculos con subculturas en Estados Unidos, etc. ¿Pero porqué Brüno no ha obtenido esa fama si ya realizó todo lo que hacen los “artistas”? La respuesta es fácil, no existe un famoso gay.

Esto da pie a que la segunda parte de la película torne al alrededor de la aceptación de la comunidad gay en estados como Kansas. Donde Brüno decide ver a un Convertidor Cristiano que le da una serie de instrucciones, las cuáles el protagonista sigue al pie de la letra, para poder “vencer la enfermedad” y convertirse en hombre.

Es así que Sacha Baron Cohen nos demuestra su gran capacidad para reinventarse actoralmente y una vez más le da una lección a los estadounidenses al burlarse de ellos, esta vez probablemente de una forma más agresiva y grotesca que en Borat, pero sin perder la esencia. Cada escena, cada situación, lleva a una reflexión sobre la sociedad en la que vivimos, donde podremos reírnos, sentirnos agredidos o simplemente no darnos cuenta que se está burlando de nosotros como le pasó a Bono, Chris Martin, Sting, Snoop Dog y Elton John los cuáles participan con Brüno en la grabación de una canción que no meramente se burla de ellos, más el proyecto completo sí.

Spiridom and son Ion Ciorebea of Glod, Romania

I recently saw a documentary at the Sevilla European Film Festival entitled Carmen Meets Borat. The film follows Ionela Carmen Ciorebea, a 17-year-old girl in the impoverished village of Glod, Romania. It focuses on her parents’ pressure for her to get married, specifically to a man she does not love, while she is trying to figure out a way to escape the poor village. Secondly, the documentary follows how the villagers of Glod were tricked into being filmed for the movie Borat. FOX 20th Century told them the filming was for a documentary on poverty in Romania, paid them very little, and then proceeded to humiliate the entire village in their movie.

I have never been a big fan of the movie Borat, but after seeing how poorly the filmmakers and Sacha Baron Cohen treated the people of Glod, I have a new found dislike for the movie and the parties involved.  When they were told it was a documentary, the poor villagers were more than willing to be filmed for €3 each. It was not until they saw Borat playing on T.V. in the local bar that they found out the truth.

One local girl was named the “number four prostitute in the whole of Kazakhstan”. A rubber sex toy was put on Nicolae Tudorache’s amputated arm and was told it was a prosthetic arm. The most degrading was when Spiridom Ciorebea, the town welder, was dubbed the town abortionist and the filmmakers wouldn’t explain to him why they were painting his arms red.

“It is disgusting. They conned us into doing all these things and never told us anything about what was going on. They made us look like primitives; like uncivilized savages.” -Tudorache (Daily Mail UK, 10/08)

The villagers felt there was chance for justice to be served when they came in contact with US Attorney Ed Fagan. The documentary shows him visiting Glod and speaking with Ion Ciorebea (father of Carmen) and Tudorache. Fagan tells them their case could be worth €15 million. He discusses how easy it was for FOX and Cohen to use them and make a mockery of them for their personal gain, and turns out this is exactly what Fagan did to them as well. After he flew three of the men to London to enter the FOX 20th Century building alone -without a translator- they were practically made fools inside the building and were unable to accomplish anything without speaking any English. After they returned to Glod, Fagan wouldn’t answer any of their phone calls. The case was dropped in April 2008 and the people have now been used and humiliated twice by rich Americans.

Ion Ciorebea was interested in the case to give his villagers the justice they deserved, but he also wanted to build up their village with the money. He had plans for installing running water, and the possibility of a factory to create jobs. He wanted to bring the entire community together to progress forward. At the end of the film he said he doesn’t dream anymore, “Dreaming without financial means is useless.”

I feel so appalled by this entire situation and feel deeply for these people. I was shocked that Borat filmmakers would do this, but it probably happens more often than not. Huge American companies and rich actors just trying to save a buck where they can. I had never thought twice about those people in the movie; if anything I figured they were actors. It is a shame, entirely unnecessary, and unfortunately the people of Glod will probably never see any justice for their humiliation in Borat.

Per lui è un dramma in quanto la sua unica aspirazione è quella di diventare famoso. Viene abbandonato da tutti i suoi amici e collaboratore, compreso il suo mini amante asiatico. L’unico che gli resta fedele è Lutz ( Gustaf Hammarsten), l’assistente del suo assistente. I due decidono di partire alla volta degli States per realizzare il sogno del ragazzo. Riuscirà Brüno a diventare world famous?

Sacha Baron Cohen dopo Borat, torna con un altro personaggio molto divertente e decisamente spregiudicato e irriverente: Brüno, diciannovenne pazzo per la moda e per tutto ciò che è trendy, dallo spiccatissimo accento austriaco, che è disposto a tutto pur di diventare famoso. Il ragazzo non ha alcun limite e si cimenterà nelle attività più strane e assurde pur di ottenere il tanto agognato successo. Questa volta “lo studio sociologico” messo in atto dal camaleontico e geniale attore inglese è sulla percezione e sui cliché relativi al mondo degli omosessuali e quindi anche al correlato tema dell’omofobia.  La pellicola alterna momenti di ilarità a momenti più seri durante i quali l’ex presentatore di “Funkyzeit mit Brüno” decide di reinventarsi e di trovare vari escamotages per arrivare il successo, tra i quali adottare un bambino africano, cosa che realizzerà barattando il piccolo chiamato O.J., con un ipod rosso limited edition, o cercando di farsi rapire dal  più pericoloso terrorista libanese provocandolo durante un’intervista dicendogli che “Bin Laden è assolutamente fuori moda con quella barba e che sembra la brutta copia di Babbo Natale”. Una delle varie strade perseguite è anche quella della guarigione dalla sua omosessualità, frequentando un cento apposito e partecipando ad attività prettamente maschili come la caccia. Accanto a lui in questa serie di tentativi il fido Lutz, innamorato di lui, l’unico che crede nelle sue possibilità e nel suo talento.

Cos’altro aggiungere su questa pellicola? E’ sicuramente divertente ma allo stesso tempo, soprattutto in alcune parti, molto, per alcuni troppo, forte. Si ride molto e ci si chiede continuamente dove trovi il protagonista il coraggio e la faccia tosta per girare determinate scene…  Se poi aggiungiamo che alla regia c’è l’irriverente Larry Charles, regista di Borat e  tra l’altro del mockumentary Religiolus-Vedere per credere abbiamo sicuramente un quadro più chiaro circa le cose estreme e spregiudicate presenti nella pellicola.

In definitiva una pellicola divertente, provocatoria a tratti eccessiva con un Baron Cohen sempre al top (la sottoscritta ha apprezzato particolarmente il suo tedesco impeccabile!)

Conclusione: Consigliato a chi ama le provocazioni cinematografiche e non si scandalizza facilmente e soprattutto a chi adora la comicità di Sacha Baron Cohen.

Isla Fisher is eyeing “Desperados,” a feature comedy described as a female-oriented “Hangover.”

The story is set in motion when a woman sends an indignant e-mail to her new beau, who’s gone silent after they have sex. When she discovers he’s comatose in a Mexican hospital, she races south of the border with her friends in tow to intercept the e-mail before he recovers.

The project is being developed at Universal by Mark Gordon (“2012″) and Jason Blum, one of the producers behind the surprise horror hit “Paranormal Activity.” It was written by Ellen Rapoport.

Fisher, the Australia-raised fiancee of “Borat” star Sacha Baron Cohen, last starred in “Confessions of a Shopaholic.” She made her breakthrough as a twisted bridesmaid in 2005’s “Wedding Crashers.”
