Pauillac '99

So there I was. It’s Thanksgiving and we are celebrating an American holiday here in London town. I had the day off and spent most of the afternoon defrosting the turkey. Once defrosted, popped into the oven and carefully basted every half hour until a lovely golden brown. Then the sides- potatoes, stuffing, sprouts, gravy, etc. Almost time to eat. And what do we have to go along with this sumptuous feast? A variety of wines from Jacob’s Creek Shiraz for the less discerning  to a fantastic Beaujolais cru (more on that later) and a Paulliac, the Lacoste-Borie 1999.

Finally time to sit down and eat. I  had decanted the Paulliac an hour earlier which should have been sufficient time for it to open up. I poured. Now, Lacoste -Borie is the second wine of the famous Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste but it is still quite good, a well made wine with finesse and elegance. The wine is composed of primarily cabernet sauvignon with merlot making up the remainder. I took a sniff –  lovely cedary, graphite aromas with subtle tobacco notes peaking through. I swished it round – nice! Supple tannins, very cassis-y notes underpinned by a toastiness that stayed on for some time. It was a perfect wine for turkey around the holidays. I was quite enjoying it, talking, laughing, eating and then I made the fatal mistake of setting my glass down for a minute.

I can still recall the exact moment. It was all in slo-mo. I remember chatting to my neighbor then turning my head and  reaching for my glass. At the same moment here comes my friend with the dreaded Jacob’s Creek in hand, she was topping up her glass. It just didn’t register that she was going to top up my glass as well and before I could scream – NOOOOO! It was too late, the deed was done.

Despite her repeated apologies, I found it a bit difficult to forgive her but fortunately there was still some Paulliac left. I managed to console myself with what was left in the decanter. Oh well, these things happen and I was able to at least enjoy a full glass of delicious Bordeaux before its desecration.

(CNDP-Nanos) Débat bidon dans un bunker

A propos de la réunion de la Commission nationale du débat public Nanotechnologies à Grenoble (Alpexpo) le 1er décembre

“Le grand public est au centre de notre mission”, proclame la Commission particulière du débat public Nanotechnologies sur son site. Et Bergougnoux, son président, d’espérer dans Le Monde, le jour du lancement de sa campagne d’acceptabilité, la participation de 10 000 à 12 000 personnes aux pseudo-débats – soit une moyenne de 590 à 700 participants par ville.

Les compte-rendus des sept premières réunions, établis par la CNDP elle-même, nous informent que seules 200 à 300 personnes se déplacent en moyenne, soit moins de la moitié que prévu. Un échec pour la CNDP ? Certes non. En réalité, l’organisation de ces réunions bidon écarte minutieusement le “grand public” pour réserver le prétendu débat aux experts et contre-experts du nanomonde.

A Strasbourg, Toulouse, Orléans, Bordeaux, Lille, Clermont-Ferrand, Besançon et Grenoble, nul n’a vu d’affiches sur les murs, ni reçu de tract dans sa boîte aux lettres. A chaque étape le même refrain chez les habitants interrogés : personne n’est au courant. Ce n’est certes pas faute de budget – deux millions d’euros pour cette campagne de promotion – si la CNDP néglige la plus élémentaire information de la population.

Au contraire son agence de manipulations publiques, I&E Consultants, envoie-t-elle en masse des invitations insistantes aux universités, laboratoires, instituts de recherche. A Grenoble les chercheurs de l’Université Joseph-Fourier (scientifique) et des instituts de sciences dures du CNRS ont ainsi reçu des mails les incitant à bourrer la salle pour soutenir la tribune et riposter à d’éventuelles manifestations d’opposition. I&E invite également les associations environnementalistes ou de consommateurs à étaler leur contre-expertise pour un échange démocratique sur les taux de nano-pollution admissibles. Ainsi s’assure-t-on le respect de la consigne délivrée par Jean-Louis Borloo dans le film d’introduction aux réunions : “Notre façon de vivre va être bouleversée par ces nanotechnologies, la question c’est pas d’être pour ou contre” (sic).

Résumons : 250 personnes dans la salle. Les premiers rangs réservés aux représentants des sept ministères maîtres d’ouvrage. Des intervenants officiels disséminés dans le public. Les invités issus des labos, de la Chambre de commerce, des boîtes locales ; et des citoyens spécialistes délégués par leurs associations. Combien d’anonymes du “grand public” dans ces débats bidon ? Leur présence est si peu souhaitée que d’honorables représentants de ceci-cela ont pu s’offusquer de la distribution par des contestataires sans appartenance, de tracts “sans signature d’association“. La CNDP quant à elle le déclare tout de go : “Nous ne sommes pas intéressés par les slogans et les déclarations anonymes”. D’autant moins que la commission, tout en invitant le public à “éclairer les décisions du gouvernement”, a établi à l’avance la liste des 147 questions susceptibles d’être soulevées en réunion, ainsi que les thèmes à exclure du débat (la biologie synthétique, le transhumanisme, les sciences cognitives – bref, l’homme-machine dans le monde-machine). Cette liste a été rendue publique par Pièces et Main d’œuvre sur les sites www.piecesetmaindoeuvre.com et www.nanomonde.org.

A Besançon, le dispositif anti-public est monté d’un cran sécuritaire. Les participants, accueillis par un triple contrôle de vigiles, furent priés, une fois à l’intérieur, de signer un engagement à ne pas “perturber le débat”.

A Grenoble, c’est dans un bunker que le grand public est invité à s’exprimer en toute liberté. Police partout, vigiles privés en nombre renforcé ont été convoqués pour le show dans la capitale des nanos, à Alpexpo. La sécurité, nous dira l’honnête Bergougnoux, est l’affaire du responsable de la salle ; la CNDP ne touchant pas à ces basses œuvres. Ça tombe bien, le patron d’Alpexpo est un expert en la matière. Guy Chanal, également patron du Palais des Sports et de la course cycliste des “Six Jours de Grenoble”, est réputé pour sa poigne qui lui vaut une réputation de “cow-boy” parmi ses employés. Son expertise en maintien de l’ordre fait de lui depuis 2007 le conseiller technique auprès du préfet de l’Isère en matière de grands rassemblements, “en liaison avec le chef du service interministériel de défense et de protection civile” (prefecture.isere.fr). Nous voilà rassurés.

Tel qu’il est, avec ses multiples trucages et manipulations, ce pseudo-débat de la CNDP ne peut se dérouler autrement, puisque précisément il est destiné à simuler un exercice de démocratie impossible. Les opposants au nanomonde ayant dénoncé cette mascarade organisée trois ans après l’inauguration de Minatec à Grenoble, il ne restait à la CNDP qu’à ramasser les gestionnaires des nuisances pour servir de marionnettes dans ses numéros de ventriloques.

Il est notoire que les seuls débats publics sur les nanotechnologies depuis 2003 ont eu lieu à l’initiative obstinée des opposants et que celui de la CNDP n’existerait pas s’il ne s’agissait d’enfouir ces manifestations critiques. Du reste, serions-nous seuls contre tous à clamer notre opposition au nanomonde, que nous persisterions.

Une chose est sûre : OGM, déchets nucléaires, ITER ou nanotechnologies, l’hostilité croît vis-à-vis de la “démocratie technique”, des sociologues de l’acceptabilité et des organisateurs de la fausse concertation qui mettent en œuvre la devise de leurs collègues de France Telecom : “Faire participer, c’est faire accepter”. Pas plus que les OGM ou le nucléaire, les nanotechnologies ne se gèrent. Face au nanomonde nous ne pouvons nous satisfaire de règlements à la marge. Voilà pourquoi nous ne participerons pas au débat bidon de la CNDP à Grenoble le 1er décembre.

Saison de la Turquie en France
La Saison de la Turquie en France, c’est 8 mois d’événements culturels, économiques et intellectuels qui nous dévoilent une Turquie jeune et moderne.
Jusqu’au 31 mars 2010, plus de 400 événements sont organisés en France. Cinéma, musique classique, gastronomie, arts mineurs… Certains nous feront aussi découvrir les liens historiques entretenus avec la France depuis le XVIe siècle.
Si l’objectif de la Saison de la Turquie est bien sûr de promouvoir la culture de la Turquie à des fins touristiques, elle tend surtout à favoriser les échanges entre les institutions culturelles et ONG entre les deux pays.

A l’issue de la confrontation aller-retour en Ligue des champions, la France et l’Italie se quittent dos à dos. Pour les clubs français : 2 victoires (Lyon-Fiorentina et Bordeaux-Juventus),  2 nuls (Juventus-Bordeaux et  Milan-Marseille ) et 2 défaites (Marseille-Milan et Fiorentina-Lyon). En revanche, à l’issue de la 5ème journée de Ligue des champions, les 3 clubs français totalisent 30 points alors que les 3 clubs italiens en comptent 28. Avantage donc aux formations françaises en rajoutant le bémol suivant :  les 3 clubs français sont les 3 premiers du dernier championnat alors que les 3 clubs italiens sont les clubs classés 2ème, 3ème et 4ème. L’Inter de Milan vainqueur du dernier championnat italien n’étant pas dans un groupe avec un club français !

Con el cierre de la quinta fecha de la fase de grupos de la UEFA Champions League 2009/2010, el panorama de cara a los compromisos de octavos de final parece ser más claro para algunos equipos, mientras que para otros, a falta de una fecha para concluir esta instancia, las oportunidades se acabaron. A los tres equipos clasificados en la cuarta jornada disputada hace apenas dos semanas -Chelsea, Porto y Sevilla-, se sumaron entre el día martes y miércoles, Manchester United, Bordeaux, Fiorentina, Olimpique de Lyon y Arsenal. De esta manera, ya son ocho los equipos que se aseguraron un lugar entre los mejores dieciseis de la máxima competición europea a nivel de clubes.

En cuanto a las actuaciones argentinas, la más destacada fue la del delantero del Real Madrid Gonzalo Higuaín. El ex-atacante de River Plate marcó el único gol en la victoria que obtuvo su equipo frente al FC Zurich en el estadio Santiago Bernabeú. De esta manera, el conjunto blanco quedó bien posicionado de cara a la última jornada de la fase de grupos y espera confiado el derby del próximo fin de semana frente la Barcelona en el cual defenderá la punta de la Liga Española.

Por su parte, con un Lionel Messi reservado de cara al clásico español, el equipo catalán también llega en alza después de la contundente victoria sobre el Inter, que lo coloca en la cima del grupo F, con buenas perspectivas de clasificación de cara a la última fecha de la fase de grupos.

Otro argentino que tuvo una destacada actuación fue Luis González en el empate de su equipo, Olimpique de Marsella, en su enfrentamiento con el Milán en el estadio San Siro. El ex-volante de Huracán y River Plate marcó el único gol de su equipo, que sirvió para obtener un importante empate que lo coloca con posibilidades de clasificación en el grupo C. En la próxima jornada recibirá al Real Madrid.

La última fecha de la fase de grupos se disputará entre el 8 y 9 de diciembre.

Not such a good day yesterday for Italian squads in the Champions League. In fact, apart from Fiorentina, it wasn’t such a good week. Inter got stomped 2-0 by Barcelona, Marseille drew AC Milan with a goal apiece and Juventus fell 2-0 to Bordeaux; meanwhile humble Fiorentina edged Lyon 1-0 to seal their qualification and send Liverpool crashing prematurely out of the competition. As far as coefficients go, the Bundesliga isn’t exactly doing its best to overtake Serie A so far; Bayern Münich needs to beat Juventus at home in their next fixture to leapfrog them and move on, VfB Stuttgart have a chance if they defeat upstarts Unirea Urziceni in their final match, while VfL Wolfsburg sit tied at second in their group and have the obstacle of a home match against Manchester United to navigate if they wish to move on into the round of 16. Meanwhile, it’s the French who have asserted themselves as a force to be reckoned with; at this point both Bordeaux and Lyon have sealed their passage into the next round, while Marseille have a very real chance, but also a very strong opponent to overcome in Real Madrid in their final match of the group stages. As for the Spanish, both Barca and Real Madrid have had their hiccups in the group matches – Real in the form of a loss and a draw to AC Milan, Barca with a loss and draw to Rubin Kazan. Atlético Madrid have been abysmal, and only Sevilla have really succeeded in dominating their group (although they gave up an embarrassing defeat on Tuesday). The only sides looking wholly comfortable (apart from the aforementioned French) are the English — other than Liverpool, of course. Chelsea, United and Arsenal have all topped their groups with relative ease, thus, three English teams have sealed their qualification, while one has sealed its own demise. At this key point in the group stages, it really is anybody’s tournament to be won, but I will say that Chelsea look to be leading the pack right now, and Bordeaux may reveal themselves as a force to be reckoned with.

That being said, Chelsea fans: don’t get too big-headed just yet, because we’ve got a long way to go yet and there’s bound to be a few surprises along the way.

<City Bag>, une nouvelle maroquinerie a prévu son ouverture le 09 novembre à Bordeaux! Elle se situe rue Edmond Costedoat, un lieu proche de la place de Victoire. Le boutiquier s’appelle ZHANG Yan, c’ est un chinois très gentil et chaleureux. Il a 31 ans et vient de Taiyuan, la capitale de la Province de Shan Xi en Chine. Il est venu en France il y a 8 ans .

Depuis 2001 étudiant à Marseille, ZHANG Yan a commencé à concrétiser son rêve en France. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme de Licence 3, en l’ été 2005, ZHANG Yan a ouvert un magasin et a pu mettre ainsi en application sa spécialité <Économie>. Au début, son magasin n’était pas très net. Il vendait des parapluies, des chapeaux. Puis il a vendu des sacs et autres accessoires. C’ est un  métier difficile! Actuellement son magasin est grossiste, mais aussi au détail.

Pendant l’été 2009, ZHANG Yan a démenagé à Bordeaux. Parce que sa femme est venue en France, ils ont pensé que Bordeaux était une ville plus calme, et plus agreable à vivre que Marseille. Mais ce n’est pas la seule raison de son déménagement. En effet ZHANG Yan trouve que le marché de l’industrie du sac est presque en saturation à Marseille, et à Bordeaux il  y a moins de magasins spécialisés en maroquinerie. Donc il préfère changer d’environnement pour recommencer ses affaires.

Débutant à Bordeaux, ce n’ est pas facile de s’adapter à un nouvel environement tout de suite, mais le plus gros probléme est de chercher un logement parce que sa femme est enceinte. Elle va enfanter au mois de Février. C’ est leur deuxième enfant. Ils voudraient chercher un logement clair, calme et pas trop petit. Donc ils cherchent des informations sur le logement tous les jours, sur Internet, dans le journal, etc. “Ce n’est pas du tout facile de chercher un logement à Bordeaux!” sa femme dit toujours que, “A Marseille, trouver un bon logement est très facile, mais à Bordeaux—-Non! “

Il est le chef de la cuisine dans sa famille!

” Ma femme est le monde ! ” C’ est une phrase que dit le plus souvent ZHANG Yan. Bien que le logement ne soit pas encore loué, le travail a mis beaucoup de pression dans sa vie et tout n’a pas marché favorablement. Pourtant ZHANG Yan s’ occupe de sa femme inlassablement. Il prépare plein de bons petits plats et les cuisine tous les jours dans un entrepôt à côté de saboutique. Certainement, la vie est vraiment difficile, mais ce couple vit heureux. Et le bonheur arrivera! Ils y croient fermement.

Après être arrivé à Bordeaux, grâce au bon caractère—-gentil et chaleureux, ZHANG Yan a rencontré des Chinois: Shuai, Wenqiong, Chuan et Liang. Ils sont devenus les meillieurs amis du monde. Comme un proverbe chinois le di que <S’appuyer sur les parents chez-soi, S’appuyer sur les amis à l’extérieur>, ces Chinois ont offert beaucoup d’ aides à ZHANG Yan. Ils ont presenté des clients et apporté des informations de logement à ZHANG Yan. Quand ils sont libre, ils mangent ensemble. Petit à petit, Bordeaux a devenir la deuxième famille française après Marseille.

Une chaleureux famille et sa nouvlle vie à Bordeaux

Actuellement, la nouvelle vie à Bordeaux de ZHANG Yan et sa femme marchent de mieux en mieux. Ils ons bien géré leur maroquinerie, connu des amis Chinois et obtenu plus d’ informations sur le logement. Ils sont en train de planifier comment acheter une petit voiture et attendre le bébé qui va venir au monde. ZHANG Yan et sa femme, ce couple chinois ont commencé à bien aimer la ville de Bordeaux.

Bordeaux 2×0 Juventus: o time francês é a grande surpresa e está incrível. Bateu a Juve em casa com dois gols de cabeça e é líder disparado e classificado.

Bayern 1×0 Maccabi: com um gol solitário, os alemães ainda sonham. O time ocupa uma fraca terceira colocação e pode ficar de fora. Na última rodada Bayern e Juve se enfrentam pra ver quem fica e quem sai.

Grupo B:

CSKA 2×1 Wolfsburg: os alemães saíram  na frente mas vacilaram e agora têm que esperar a última rodada. Os gols do CSKA foram de Necid e Krasic. Agora ambas equipes possuem 7 pontos e sonham em chegar às Oitavas.

Manchester 0×1 Besiktas: o time inglês já havia dado sinais de fraqueza na última partida em 3×3 com o CSKA. Perdeu, embora já classificado.

Grupo C:

Real Madrid 1×0 Zurich: com a cabeça no clássico contra o Barça, os merengues suaram pra vencer. O gol foi marcado por Higuaín, após passe de Kaká. Agora, os espanhóis são líderes do grupo.

Milan 1×1 Olympique: a maldição do San Siro permanece e o Milan não venceu em casa ainda nessa Champions. O gol de Borrielo deixou os italianos em vantagem por 6 minutos, já que Lucho empatou pouco depois. Grupo embolado e as duas vagas serão definidas apenas na última rodada.

Grupo C:

Chelsea 1×0 Porto: ambos classificados, os times jogaram sem grande emoção. O gol do Chelsea foi marcado por Anelka. Na última rodada, as equipes definem apenas quem será primeiro e quem será segundo.

Apoel 1×1 Atlético de Madrid: mais um resultado medíocre dos espanhóis, que já estavam eliminados. A equipe do Chipre não assusta ningém, mas o Atlético conseguiu dois bravos empates com eles.

Grupo E:

Fiorentina 1×0 Lyon: um gol de pênalti que deu a liderança e a classificação à Viola. A Fiorentina faz uma campanha excelente e convincente. O Lyon já estava classificado e não apresentou um esforço muito grande.

Debrecen 0×1 Liverpool: a reação do Liverpool veio tarde demais. O time venceu, porém a combinação de resultados eliminou o time. Fazia tempo que o Liverpool não fazia uma aparição tão fraca num torneio. Resta a Europa League.

Grupo F:

Barcelona 2×0 Internazionale: Piqué e Pedro foram os autores dos gols que deram a vitória ao Barça. A Inter apenas assistiu e agora precisa reagir na última rodada, senão será mais um grande a ficar de fora.

Sevilla 0×1 Unirea: jogando sem pressão, o Sevilla vacilou e perdeu a invencibilidade. Quem agradece é o time romeno, que assume a segunda posição e pode deixar o Suttugart de fora da briga.

Rangers 0×2 Stuttgart: outra derrota do fraquíssimo time escocês. O Stuttgart aproveitou e não marcou bobeira. Agora, na última rodada, os alemães disputam a vaga contra o Unirea.

Grupo H:

AZ Alkmaar 0×0 Olympiacos: empate sem graça que manteve a disputa da segunda vaga ainda viva para os gregos. O AZ está eliminado. 

Arsenal 2×0 Standard: boa vitória do time inglês, que disparou na ponta. Os gols foram feitos por Nasri e Denilson.

Classificados: Bordeaux, Manchester, Chelsea, Porto, Fiorentina, Lyon, Sevilla e Arsenal. Restam metade das vagas para serem definidas na última rodada.

As grandes decepções até o momento são Liverpool, Atlético de Madrid, Internazionale, Juve e Bayern. A surpresa muito grata fica por conta de Fiorentina e Bordeaux.

United Could Have Used This Intensity... Rooney Sits In Loss

Another matchday has come and gone. I want to take this opportunity to voice my displeasure with a trend that only seems to be exacerbated by time. The resting of quality players by teams that have already qualified. Now I understand that managers want to pace their top talent as it can be a very long season for some of Europe’s top teams. But come on people. This is the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, this is where you prove your mettle, where you show Europe, and indeed the world, that you are the best club team on the planet. Why spend all that money on acquiring the most sought after assets in the sport… to sit them in favour of players, who while talented in their own right, just don’t measure up. Perhaps I am irked by this more than usual today because the ‘tactical’ personnel selections played havoc with my predictions, but then I think, to hell with that. I look to other sports where true Ironmen suit up and head into battle 3 or 4 times weekly. Take for example top NHL teams. They play their top players (when healthy) every… single… game.

But I digress… here is the disaster story that has become my predictions from the second half of matchday 5.

RESULTS:

Bordeaux 2 – 0 Juventus: Robert 0 for 1 (Despite my record… very happy for the french squad)

Bayern 1- 0 Maccabi Haifa: Robert 1 for 2

CSKA Moskva 2 – 1 Wolfsburg: Robert 1 for 3 (Wolfs just cant get there groove back)

Manchester United 0 -1 Besiktas: Robert 1 for 4(sorry guys I cant possibly guess when one team gives the other a pity win)

Madrid 1 – 0 Zurich: Robert 2 for 5

Milan 1 – 1 Marseille: Robert 2 for 6

Porto 0 – 1 Chelsea: Robert 3 for 7

APOEL 1 – 1 Atletico: Robert 4 for 8 (Glad I could recover some of my dignity on this one… I suppose I knew that in my heart of hearts Atletico wouldn’t show up, much like the rest of the tournament)

My Swiss grandfather taught me the art of wine. For him the countryside, the vineyard side, the grapes and barrels, the talkativeness of the land, the dependency on the weather conditions, the picking and piling, the colors and aromas, the sitting around the table with crystal glasses and spittoons, the taking notes based on the year, the dust on old bottles…all of the above was life and…love. He was the equivalent of Shakespeare, only instead of prose, his master land was the wine.

He joined the eternal kingdom of the heavens not very long ago, but his wine spirit, is always -quite loudly- with us on the family table reminding us to ‘hold the wine glass properly’, to ‘let the wine breathe first’, to ‘always smell first’, to ‘ah, the strawberries in this one’ or ‘the vanilla scents on that’.

He and I have always had a special relationship, one that went beyond wine and feelings, but one that definitely revolved around them. On my 22nd birthday, his gift to me was a registration to an advanced Sommelier’s course in Bordeaux. I had to combine my regular Master’s courses with this intense series of mind-blowing, nose-experimenting, tongue-advancing courses on the wine-making, the wine-tasting and the wine-drinking.

It took all that I had not to hate him for all the excess hours on the train, the sleepless nights and weekends, the pressure, the sneezing, the hanging around snobbish wine masters, but all of that…would dissolve instantly, as soon as I’d find myself walking down the ‘aisles’ of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot.

Today is Thanksgiving – a very important celebration for every American around the world. Had I been back in New York, I would be probably joining my aunt and her family into tasting the turkey, the stuffing, the cranberry sauce etc. Here, in Greece, none of the above will occur today: today is just like any other Thursday. I somehow wish I was in New York -or Texas, that’s where Phillip, my aunt’s husband is from- and where I spent my first Thanksgiving a couple of years ago. I will never forget that day: not only because I, then, bought my first original cowboy hat (yeap, I was one of those kids that grew up watching the All-American movies, daydreaming of walking into a remote diner, sitting on the bar, and telling the fat lady who’ll be pouring me some black coffee by then ‘you know, scrambled eggs an’ all’) but mainly because of the mixture of antithetic tastes in my mouth: salty and sweet, sour and creamy, bitter and inexplicably desserty.

As my heart today will be with Phillip’s mum -who warned Phillip back then that I should have been her son, and that he should do everything within his powers to always feed me because I was too skinny for Texan standards- it will also be with my beloved grandparents and my memories of their home in Geneva.

My grandfather was the person who taught me how to properly sit on the table, how to cross the utensils as I continue my meal, how to hold the glass and set up the dinner table, how to greet a woman, how to get the door for her, how to pull the chair for her to sit, how to treat her like a delicate rose with occasional thorns that are “only there to remind you with occasional pains just how much you love her”, the ’savoir-vivre’ at its extreme.

I miss him terribly, but I sit bits and pieces of him in Natalie, my father, little Marie, even myself. Even with his passing, he’s brought me closer to my best friend. And the months that followed his death, there were a zillion times I wish I could spend just one more night in his study, with him, talking about my fears and concerns with him, while sipping a 1989 Merlot from his Eurocave cabinet.

So this being the second Thursday of our Lists conquest, and this being Thanksgiving, when all Americans will be sitting around the table, enjoying their huge meal and being thankful for all they’ve been given, and all that they love, I cannot help but to want to dedicate my second list, to the man who’s taught me so much and still does.

List II: Let’s Talk About Wine. Don’t run away just yet: this is not a list that just addresses the experts. My grandfather’s golden rule was that Wine is for everyone- super nose, normal nose or no nose- wine is to be enjoyed by every single person on the planet. As a graduate student in Paris, I used to work to two different wine bars, as their wine expert- and although no French person can ever claim ignorance when it came to wine, often times people (especially women) would be very concerned with appearing too illiterate in its tasting. I would always tell them that wine is yours, just like your heart is yours. It tastes what you want it to taste. If you’re happy, it’s happy, if you’re sad, it’s sad and so on and so forth.

There are numerous fine wines around the world (I need to admit that with the years, the Italian wine became my favorite one in contrast to the French varieties) but what makes a wine bottle a masterpiece, is the moment in which you drink it: the person you share it with, the decision you just made about your job or your relationship, the landscape in which you are, the country you are traveling to, the mood on the table, the moment while you are writing your book, while talking to your lover on the phone, while staring into his eyes, while you’re about to propose, while you’re writing the longest letter you’ll never send, while you’re sitting vis-a-vis your grandfather, dressed in a white t-shirt and a pair of navy pants and a bow-tie in your little neck pretending to be the waiter of your ‘La Maison De Junior” restaurant (that sadly only served potato chips, cheese, ice-cream and berries.)

If you had to make a list of the world’s finest beverages (wine or no wine, it’s up to you) of those moments you’ll never forget for reasons that are purely your own…what would it be? What year would your beverage have? What color? What would its origin be? What would be its quality? What glass would you drink it in? Would you decant it? Where would you be drinking it in an ideal scenario and with whom? And would it be accompanied by food or not? And most importantly…what would you three (you, him/her and the wine) be talking about?

“Paradossalmente abbiamo subito il gol quando stavamo giocando meglio, abbiamo sofferto moltissimo sulle punizioni e i calci d’angolo. I gol sono arrivati su palle inattive. Dovevamo evitare falli al limite dell’area di rigore, invece ne abbiamo fatti tantissimi, ma il Bordeaux ci è stato superiore”. Questo il commento a caldo, fatto dai microfoni di SKY, dal tecnico della Juve Ciro Ferrara alla brutta prestazione dei suoi contro il Bordeaux.

“Troppe disattenzioni su  palla inattiva le abbiamo avute di sicuro – continua Ferrara -. Sul primo gol la marcatura non e’ sta assolutamente fatta. Su queste situazioni c’é un’unica cosa da fare, prestare la massima attenzione”. Ora per la qualificazione diventa decisiva la sfida con il Bayern. “E’ chiaro che dispiace, perché volevamo chiudere il discorso qualificazione stasera – ammette Ferrara -, ma non lo abbiamo meritato in questa gara, quindi, andiamo a giocarcela in casa contro il Bayern. Sarà una bella partita, che vogliamo vincere, non vogliamo pareggiarla”.

Com’è andato Del Piero? “La condizione di Del Piero? Non credo sia questo il problema, la squadra ha sofferto e anche lui ha patito questa grossa spinta del Bordeaux. Non sono assolutamente soddisfatto, non solo di Del Piero, ma della Juventus”.

Non si placa la furia dei tifosi della Juventus contro l’Inter e contro Balotelli. I circa trecento ultrà presenti allo stadio di Bordeaux prima della partita hanno di nuovo intonato il coro: “Se saltelli, muore Balotelli” e hanno inveito verbalmente contro i nerazzurri. Il ds Alessio Secco è andato sotto la curva per far cessare i cori Quando l’altoparlante ha ricordato che “su questo campo è bandito il razzismo”, in tutta risposta, si è levato un coro ancora più pesante: “Un negro non può essere italiano”, senza nominare esplicitamente nessuno. Era lo stesso coro che l’anno scorso portò alla squalifica del campo della Juventus, poi commutata in match a porte chiuse. Il presidente bianconero, Jean Claude Blanc, dai microfoni di SKY, ha ribadito per l’ennesima volta che la società bianconera è contraria a ogni forma di razzismo. Il Ds Alessio Secco è andato sotto la curva bianconera a dire ai tifosi che se continuano con i cori razzisti, c’e’ la minaccia di squalifica internazionale per la Juventus.
