Here’s some new stuff. Below, a lovely wall adornment that I crafted out of toilet paper rolls. No, seriously.

Pretty rad, huh? I was even a little surprised at how easily and well it turned out, and how many other people liked it. All it takes is some TP or paper towel rolls, some Elmer’s glue, and scissors. Full tutorial here. (it’s super easy!)

Next up: A housemate and I figured that after all the naked lady decor we’ve inflicted on the house, it might do us some good to gender-balance. Hence, a heart-stoppingly gorgeous border made of Heartthrob (girly game from the 80s I got from a thrift store many moons ago) hotties in all their attendant 80s regalia, to brighten up our sad, dark little hallway. Hunks and a little sticky-tacky are all you need for this project.

I once made a wall border out of Chick books..you know, the little hellfire-and-brimstone comics you find in DVD cases and public bathrooms. The one about Halloween that’s like a Jesus-freak version of Pumpkinhead and another about how little girls suffering from cancer can still go to hell when they die if they don’t become “born-again.” That guy is one sick fuck, but the illustrations are admittedly pretty awesome and they ended up making a pretty colorful border. Which do you prefer?

I need to find some time to write something up about our CPH:DOX Border Documents event (AHRC Beyond

I need to find some time to write something up about our CPH:DOX Border Documents event (AHRC Beyond Text: Creativity Beyond Borders Network event #3)… It was great fun, though we were decimated by various illnesses (Mette, Frederik, Mary Claire – be well). I have to say first, it was really cold in Copenhagen, and the DOX event was wildly dispersed, so we shivered a lot. Actually, we did not meet any of the CPH.DOX organisers as they were really busy, though our link through the tent bar-staff meant I got a poster and a booklet. They were plagued by power cuts and floods, but the room at the Akademie that we used was perfect. Of course our very own Mathias Danbolt was the hero of it all – starting us off with some context about the protests against the absurd deportations of Iraqi asylum seekers from Denmark to Iraq, and then on Queer activism. Hito Steyerl showed some really really interesting clips, and Maria Finn’s presentation was fabulous and moving. Khushwant Singh’s film in diasporic Sikhism generated a really great discussion, as did Ananya Chatterjee’s film on sex workers in South Asia the next night. By no means were these received uncritically, and I think its a good thing that were were able to have a ‘full and frank debate’, as they say. On the first day the Akademie students and some festival guests joined us, on the second and third days it was just us lot and some people from the festival – so on average we were mostly 20-25 persons. Very good group, very high level of debate – I think it works well like this. Abhijit Roy’s presentation was masterful on frontality address in cinema, while Bhaskar Mukhopadhyay gave a very detailed introduction to the cinema of Ritwik Ghatak, which has to do with the border between Bengal (ie, btw West Bengal and East Pakistan, later Bangladesh). the Goldsmiths students work was all very insightful, and sometimes incredibly lyrical – Elena Papadaki with some difficult video art, Heidi Hasbrouk provoking intense discussion of ethics of family video, Jennifer Otter stealing the show with her just complete Joy Division tribute band doc, and Ray Ganz tempting ears and minds. On the last day, we started with info-sessions from Ruth Hogarth of the Beyond Text scheme and Mary Claire Halvorson From Goldsmiths. Then Renata Woehrer, Dietmar Kammerer and Raul Gschrey engaged us with high level political issues from Germany – really adding something, and we lost count of the number of bits of film work or images people wanted to take home, linger over, replay. Of course we ate some fine food (Cafe Sebastapol, and Pate Pate), and had a few beers (so far as we could afford) and everyone seemed to have a grand time. The final discussion of what to do next I thought was especially useful – let’s see.

This is a partial account (as in, not the opposite of impartial, though it is that, but rather incomplete. hopefully more to come. If you were there, please supplement…)

From http://news.nationalgeographic.com/ It may be called Turkey Day, but the U.S. Thanksgiving Day

From http://news.nationalgeographic.com/

It may be called Turkey Day, but the U.S. Thanksgiving Day is about more than just the bird. Learn about a holiday myth—the first “real” Thanksgiving wasn’t until the 1800s—and how we celebrate Thanksgiving dinner today.

Key to any Thanksgiving Day menu is a fat turkey and cranberry sauce.

Some 250 million turkeys were raised in the U.S. in 2009 for slaughter, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Those birds were worth about U.S. $4.5 billion.

About 46 million will end up on U.S. dinner tables this Thanksgiving. (See the Green Guide’s suggestions for having a greener—and more grateful—Thanksgiving.)

Minnesota is the United States’s top turkey-producing state, followed by North Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, Virginia, and California.

These “big six” states produce two of every three U.S.-raised birds, according to data compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau.

U.S. farmers will also produce 709 million pounds of cranberries, which, like turkeys, are native to the Americas. The top producers are Wisconsin and Massachusetts.

The U.S. will also grow 1.8 billion pounds of sweet potatoes—many in North Carolina, California, and Mississippi—and produce 1.1 billion pounds of pumpkins.

Contrary to legend, the amount of the organic protein tryptophan in most turkeys isn’t responsible for drowsiness.

Instead scientists blame booze, the sheer caloric size of an average feast, or just plain old relaxing after stressful work schedules.

What Was on the First Thanksgiving Menu?

Little is known about the first Thanksgiving dinner in the Plimoth (also spelled Plymouth) Colony in October 1621, attended by some 50 English colonists and about 90 native Wampanoag men in what is now Massachusetts.

We do know that the Wampanoag killed five deer for the feast, and that the colonists shot wild fowl—which may have been geese, ducks, or turkey. Some form, or forms, of Indian corn were also served.

But Jennifer Monac, spokesperson for the living-history museum Plimoth Plantation said the feasters likely supplemented their venison and birds with fish, lobster, clams, nuts, and wheat flour, as well as vegetables such as pumpkin, squash, carrots, and peas.

If you want to eat like a Pilgrim yourself, try some of the Plimoth Plantation’s recipes, including stewed pompion (pumpkin) or traditional Wampanoag succotash.

Where Did Thanksgiving Come From?

American Indian peoples, Europeans, and other cultures around the world often celebrated the harvest season with feasts to offer thanks to higher powers for their sustenance and survival.

In 1541 Spaniard Francisco Vásquez de Coronado and his troops celebrated a “Thanksgiving” while searching for New World gold in what is now the Texas Panhandle.

Later such feasts were held by French Huguenot colonists in present-day Jacksonville, Florida (1564), by English colonists and Abnaki Indians at Maine’s Kennebec River (1607), and in Jamestown, Virginia (1610), when the arrival of a food-laden ship ended a brutal famine.

But it’s the 1621 Plimoth Thanksgiving that’s linked to the birth of our modern holiday. The truth is the first “real” Thanksgiving happened two centuries later.

Everything we know about the three-day Plimoth gathering comes from a description in a letter wrote by Edward Winslow, leader of the Plimoth Colony, in 1621, Monac said.

It had been lost for 200 years and was rediscovered in the 1800s, she added.

In 1841 Boston publisher Alexander Young printed Winslow’s brief account of the feast and added his own twist, dubbing it the “First Thanksgiving.”

In Winslow’s “short letter, it was clear that [the 1621 feast] was not something that was supposed to be repeated again and again. It wasn’t even a Thanksgiving, which in the 17th century was a day of fasting. It was a harvest celebration.”

But after its mid-1800s century appearance, Young’s designation caught on—to say the least.

U.S. President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving Day a national holiday in 1863. He was probably swayed in part by magazine editor Sarah Josepha Hale—the author of the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”—who had suggested Thanksgiving become a holiday, historians say.

In 1941 President Franklin Roosevelt established the current date for observance, the fourth Thursday of November.

Thanksgiving Turkey-in-Waiting

Each year at least two lucky turkeys avoid the dinner table, thanks to a presidential pardon—a longstanding Washington tradition believed to have originated with U.S. President Harry Truman.

Since 1947 the National Turkey Federation has presented two live turkeys—and a ready-to-eat turkey—to the President, according to federation spokesperson Sherrie Rosenblatt.

“There are two birds,” Rosenblatt explained, “the presidential turkey and the vice presidential turkey, which is an alternate, in case the presidential turkey is unable to perform its duties.”

Those duties pretty much boil down to not biting the President during the photo opportunity with the press.

In 2008 the vice presidential bird, “Pumpkin,” stepped in for the appearance with President Bush after the presidential bird, “Pecan,” had fallen ill the night before.

After their presidential encounter, the birds share the same happy fate as Super Bowl winning quarterbacks.

“For the last five years,” Rosenblatt said, “They’ve gone to Disneyland”—living out their days at Big Thunder Ranch in the California theme park’s Frontierland.

Talking Turkey

Pilgrims were familiar with turkeys before they landed in the Americas.

That’s because early European explorers of the New World had returned to Europe with turkeys in tow after encountering them at American Indian settlements. Indians had domesticated the birds centuries before European contact.

A century later Ben Franklin famously made known his preference that the turkey, rather than the bald eagle, should be the official U.S. bird.

But Franklin might have been shocked when, by the 1930s, hunting had so decimated North American wild turkey populations that their numbers had dwindled to the tens of thousands from a peak of at least tens of millions.

Today, thanks to reintroduction efforts and hunting regulations, wild turkeys are back.

(Related: “Birder’s Journal: Giving Thanks for Wild Turkey Sightings.”

Some seven million wild turkeys are thriving across the U.S., and many of them have adapted easily to the suburbs.

Wild turkeys, Meleagris gallopavo, can run some 10 to 20 miles (16 to 32 kilometers) an hour and fly in bursts at 55 miles (89 kilometers) an hour. Domesticated turkeys can’t fly at all.

Pass the Pigskin

For many U.S. citizens, Thanksgiving without football is as unthinkable as the Fourth of July without fireworks.

NBC Radio broadcast the first national Thanksgiving Day game in 1934, when the Detroit Lions hosted the Chicago Bears.

Except for a respite during World War II, the Lions have played—usually badly—every Thanksgiving Day since.

Consumers Rejoice!

For those who love marching and music, turkey takes a backseat to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, originally called the Macy’s Christmas parade because it kicked off the shopping season.

The tradition began in 1924, when employees recruited animals from the Central Park Zoo to join the parade.

Helium-filled balloons made their debut in the parade in 1927 and, in the early years, were released above the city skyline with the promise of rewards for their finders.

The parade, first televised nationally in 1947, now draws some 44 million viewers—not counting the 3 million people who actually line the 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) Manhattan route.

Thanksgiving weekend also boasts the retail version of the Super Bowl—Black Friday, when massive sales and early opening times attract frugal shoppers.

The National Retail Federation reports that some 130 million Americans, give or take a few million each year, brave the crowds to shop on Black Friday or on the following weekend.

Planes, Trains, and (Lots of) Automobiles

It may seem like everyone in the U.S. is on the road on Thanksgiving Day, keeping you from your turkey and stuffing.

But just 33 million of about 308 million U.S. citizens drive more than 50 miles (80 kilometers) from home on the holiday, according to the American Automobile Association.

Thanksgiving North of the Border

Cross-border travelers can celebrate Thanksgiving twice, because Canada celebrates its own Thanksgiving Day the second Monday in October.

As in the U.S., the event is sometimes linked to a historic feast with which it has no real ties—in this case explorer Martin Frobisher’s 1578 ceremony, which gave thanks for his safe arrival in what is now New Brunswick.

Canada’s Thanksgiving, established in 1879, was inspired by the U.S. holiday.

Dates of observance fluctuated, sometimes coinciding with the U.S. Thanksgiving or the Canadian veteran-appreciation holiday, Remembrance Day—and at least once it occurred as late as December.

But Canada’s colder climate eventually led to the 1957 decision that formalized the October date.

Hi all

I mean ‘all’ on the Beyond Text: Creativity Beyond Borders network (plus anyone who wants to chip in):

After a very successful meeting in Copenhagen (write ups pending here) I’ve been thinking a little in advance of our next meetings – in London (March 2010) and Gothenburg (June 2010):

In each case there will be the usual workshop (20-30 people) with some bigger public lectures and a link up with another event.

-

Dates (tbc):

London – March 20-24 approx (exact dates to be confirmed)

Gothenburg – June 8, 9 & 10th (followed by Clandestino Festival 11-13th June 2010)

-

The theme for the meeting in London (March 2009) is “Border Infections” – we think it important to address new constituencies and audiences/areas of work. The metaphor of infection, virus and health in relation to the myths and politics of Borders will be our organizing guide/prognosis. We hope to join up with LDN-BRU – if the dates can be fixed).

-

We are not sure of the theme for the Gothenburg meeting as yet. One suggestion is to call it Border Reverb. This does engage with the end of our Beyond Text series theme (this will be the last meeting in the Beyond Text series), but it does not and cannot just be a return to text (back to school!). We need to provoke and challenge the idea of the border as an end.

-

So, having so far engaged with a variety of ideas around the themes of Sonic Border, Theatre Border and Border Documents, suggestions open for March and for June. Your views are very welcome on either the Border Infections theme for London, and/or the possible theme of Border Reverb for Gothenburg (which is in association with the great Clandestino music festival).

all best

Though his curious mind proves surprisingly adept at intercepting Canadian pot smugglers and potentially dangerous illegals, years of security hysteria and cross-border resentment — and a fascinating young Canadian who has turned her green thumb to a more lucrative crop — complicate Brandon’ s world in ways even he might not be able to see past.

Border Songs is that rare delight: a gently satirical portrait, an extraordinary love story and a celebration of the coincidental and the miraculous.

“A crazy season on both sides of the “Ditch”" 2009-11-05
By Debbie Lee Wesselmann (the Lehigh Valley, PA)
Although Lynch’s second novel begins more slowly than his first, it contains all of the miraculous connections to nature and the quirky characters that propelled him onto the literary scene. Brandon Vandercool is seemingly a lug of a man: six-foot-eight, severely dyslexic, odd, artistic in an almost disturbing way, and largely innocent of the more complicated goings-on around him. He identifies more with the myriad bird life around him than he does with his neighbors in the small rural area along the US/Canadian border. But Brandon is finely attuned to his surroundings — the slight misplacement of a cobweb or the colorful flash of a piece of cloth — and he never fails to act on instinct. As he begins his job as a Border Patrol agent, both his instincts and his stumbling, bumbling personality lead to a string of surprising arrests that no one can believe are accidental. Drug dealers believe that they have a mole, and agents praise his superior talent for the job, sometimes giving his trainer Dionne the credit for his success. Brandon’s father Norm, a dairyman, remains both embarrassed and protective of his son. Madeline, a pothead with her own demons, doesn’t know what to make of Brandon’s advancements.

Although the novel centers around Brandon and the unwanted attention stemming from his arrest of two illegal aliens, dubbed the “Prince and Princess of Nowhere,” it shifts back and forth into the lives of others along the ditch that acts as a porous Pacific Northwest border between the two countries. Neighbors could be Canadian or American, and they mingle and share jabs and stories. They each harbor personal dramas that develop into defining moments. Most characterizations are first-rate and memorable, and Lynch’s descriptive language, particularly when turned toward nature, can be breathtaking. With every page, the novel becomes stronger and larger and more compelling.

Border Songs is literary fiction the way it should be: with issues, characters, and language that build as it progresses. Because it is a relatively quiet novel, readers expecting more suspenseful fare will likely be disappointed. Its treasures lie in the relationships between characters, their desires, and the way they all come together.

Also by this author, and a novel I highly recommend: The Highest Tide [HIGHEST TIDE]

Read “Border Songs” for quirky characters you can love, entertaining and improbable action, an unmistakable Pacific Northwest atmosphere that weighs on one but not oppressively. Tom Robbins’ successor has arrived in Jim Lynch, though the sensitive responses to nature, especially bird life, bring Walker Percy to mind.
McGown (Austin, TX USA)
Brandon, the main character in this novel, pretty much lives in a world of his own, though he is surrounded by Canadians and Americans who are trying to survive in an uneasy post-9/11 truce. Brandon is a border patrol agent whose duty station lies along the stretch of unfenced border between Washington State and British Columbia, part of the longest undefended border in the world. And Brandon is a gentle giant who likes nature and the outdoors and wouldn’t hurt a fly. Indeed, he exemplifies the total lack of paranoia that once existed here. In Brandon, Jim Lynch has created an unforgettable character whose adventures are brought to life with rich imagery that propels the reader through a charming story–well worth the journey.

“Great…with a bit of a quibble” 2009-08-29
By Librarian 67002 (North Vancouver, British Columbia Canada)

I absolutely loved the characters depicted in Jim Lynch’s second novel, “Border Songs”. I also enjoyed his take on how the trade in drugs and people-smuggling along the British Columbia-Washington State border, was radically changing the sense of community in the Peace Arch region. The temptation to aid and abet the trade for big bucks by otherwise law-abiding, God-fearing citizens on both sides of the 49th Parallel is convincingly presented here also.

However, Lynch only peripherally alludes to the escalation of the “War on Drugs” near the end of the book when his character, Madeline, asks her drug kingpin/lover/ boss, Toby, why he has relaxed his proscription against his crews carrying weapons .

As a Canadian resident of Greater Vancouver, I see the narcotic production and export of marijuana, to the U.S. as a dangerous, society-altering phenomenon up here. Gang wars and shootings over dope control and distribution have made city streets unsafe, and has taxed police resources mightily. And this spectre was in the back of my mind as I read “Border Songs”. Illegal transport across the rather poorly-defined and easily-breached boundary , sometimes seemed more like an episode of the wholesome British police procedural TV show “Heartbeat” with its cast of eccentric villagers and usually incompetent and non-lethal crooks.

However, despite that nitpick, don’t let me put you off Lynch’s fine story. You’ll relish his peculiar Border Patrol giant, Brandon, his family, neighbours and cop colleagues. You will also be amazed to read that this region is host to such an astonishing number of different birds on the wing to view.

If this isn’t authorial poetic license, I feel like grabbing my binoculars and heading south.

The H1N1 Swine Flu virus knows no borders, has no boundaries, and has absolutely no respect for religious or cultural traditions.

This year at the annual Hajj to Mecca, Four foreign pilgrims have died of swine flu, the Saudi Health Ministry announced on Saturday.

The Saudi Arabia Health Ministry said none of the four foreign victims had been vaccinated against the H1N1 virus, as has been recommended by The Health Ministry.

An official statement released by the ministry said all had underlying health problems, including cancer and respiratory illness, AFP news agency reported.

Three of the victims died in Medina and one in Mecca.

http://www.arabnews.com/?page=1&section=0&article=128688&d=22&m=11&y=200Over

The BBC is reporting that….up to three million Muslims from around the world take part in the holy pilgrimage every year, but health officials have expressed fears that it could provide a breeding ground for the virus.

Authorities had tried to prepare for any outbreaks by installing thermal cameras at airports and sea terminals, deploying 15,000 additional health workers and ensuring hundreds of extra beds were available.

The Hajj (Arabic: حج‎ Ḥaǧǧ) is a pilgrimage to Mecca. It is currently the largest annual pilgrimage in the world,[1] and is the fifth pillar of Islam, a moral obligation that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to do so. The Hajj is a demonstration of the solidarity of the Muslim people, and their submission to Allah (God).[2] The pilgrimage occurs from the 7th to 13th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hajj)

The Health Minister has reported that there are 16 other people that have been diagnosed with swine flu and four remain in hospital in “critical condition”.

He added 12 others had recovered following treatment.

The Saudi government has recommended the elderly, pregnant women, people with chronic diseases and children skip the Hajj this year.

The Saudi government has said all pilgrims need a certificate of vaccination before they can apply for a visa.

This is real people, and this disease is spreading worldwide,at a rapid pace.

I encourage everyone to get a H1N1 swine flu shot as soon as you can.The reports of any side effects are exaggerated, and will cause millions of people to perish from the lack of the vaccine.

Any paranoia surrounding any alledged complications from the shot are totally unsubstantiated, and if those people out there insist on not receiving the vaccine, then we as a society should only expect more mounting mass casualties from the swine flu, as exhibited this weekend, unfortunately in Mecca.

If it can happen in Mecca, it can happen anywhere.

Please everyone, wash your hands, and go get the shot.

Vietnam’s border provinces need to pay more attention to developing their tourism sector and bring in more tourists to the country, industry insiders say.

Ly Mon, general director of Ha Long Tourism Joint Stock Company, told Thanh Nien many people often think that cross-border tourism is only for low-income tourists and thus not worth much attention.

However, six travel agencies in Quang Ninh Province just proved them wrong by having a successful program that brought in 296,000 tourists from China and total revenues of VND300 billion over the past three years.

Vietnam shares more than 4,550 kilometers of its land border with China, Laos and Cambodia. According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, cross-border tourists have accounted for more than 30 percent of total foreign arrivals to the country in the past few years, with arrivals from the Southeast Asian region growing rapidly.

Vu The Binh, head of the travel department at the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, said the natural resources and cultures of the country’s 25 border provinces offer great tourism potential.

“It’s the fault of the industry that the potential has not been fully tapped,” Binh said.

Luu Duc Ke, director of the Hanoitourist Company, said that during a recent trip to Lang Son, he found that the northern border province did not pay attention to developing tourism even though the sector contributed nearly 40 percent of its gross domestic product.

For example, many foreign tourists wanted to come and visit the villages where the ethnic minorities live, but the province didn’t consider such places as tourist sites, he said.

Analysts said although border provinces have tried to improve their infrastructure for tourism, the efforts have not been enough. The facilities at many border gates have deteriorated while customs procedures have not been modernized, they said.

Meanwhile, the quality of hotel, restaurant and entertainment services in many provinces has failed to cater to wealthy visitors who tend to spend a lot of money when travelling, they added.

Cooperation between border regions of Vietnam and China has helped improve living conditions for inhabitants and boost the socio-economic development of both sides, said Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem.

Mr Khiem made the remarks at a conference held in Hanoi on Nov. 20 to review the economic corridor cooperation between Hanoi, Lao Cai, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh of Vietnam and Yunnan of China.

Participants said that cooperation among these localities brought about positive and comprehensive results in various fields, particularly in trade, investment and services despite adverse impact of the global financial crisis and economic downturn.

At present, Yunnan province has 57 businesses operating in Vietnam with a total investment capital of US$115 million. Two-way trade turnover via Lao Cai-Hekou border gate was estimated at US430 million in 2009. The Chairman of Yunnan province said that Vietnamese localities have become Yunnan’s second largest trade partner.

Recently, Hanoi granted 7 Yunnan businesses licenses to set up representative offices in the city. Also, four commercial banks in Lao Cai province were allowed to provide international payment services to commercial banks in Yunnan province.

In addition, Vietnam-China border regions have effectively cooperated in other fields, such as transport, tourism, culture and education. Some key traffic routes are being developed, including the Hanoi-Lao Cai, Noi Bai-Ha Long, and Mong Duong-Mong Cai highways. A Vietnam-China bridge crossing the Red River is being built, while maritime transport of goods on the Kunming-Quang Ninh-Hai Phong route has been strengthened.

Nguyen Huu Van, Chairman of the Lao Cai provincial People’s Committee, said that once the traffic network on the economic corridor route is completed, trade and investment cooperation between Vietnam and China will be further accelerated.

In the future, border regions between the two countries will focus on trade and investment promotion, tourism development, transport investment, cultural exchange, healthcare services, epidemic prevention, agricultural development and cooperation in social issues.
