It was actually a mediocre Friday as I was bored stiff at work. All my American friends were still giving thanks today so I had no one to chat with this afternoon. I’m quite used to not much chat in the mornings but all day and two days worth – that was tough. Thank the Lord (the Jedi Lord that is) for the virtual chatrooms at work. At least it will make me look forward to Monday and catching up on news of turkey and pumpkin pies.

I’m just so glad that it is Friday evening and the weekend. That means no alarms going off in the morning and hopefully a good day for my mental health. I’m hoping to get my sewing machine out tomorrow as well and do at least 30 minutes of sewing – something different to the mundane life that is work. I suppose this weekend will be a good time to start the Christmas present wrapping – hmm, we will see, maybe it is a bit soon for that. Happy Friday!

All right, *squeal, squeal squeal* rejoice my girl friends because I’ve suddenly become interested in celebrities. Or in this case, celebrity. May I introduce – as if he needs one – Mr. Jamie Campbell Bower from Sweeney Todd and New Moon.

Why have I’ve suddenly become interested in him? Well apart from that blasted ‘Johanna‘ song that played in my head for over a month after watching Sweeney Todd, he’s a pretty good actor. A great voice (although reminds me of a high-pitched someone at times) . This is one guy I watch out because he’s an actor first…cute guy second. He did not even say much in New Moon but his facial expressions were great. Did he go to theater school or something? I dunno…

And, yes, he’s cute. But my dear friends, I have a partiality for guys with long hair. So sue me…muahahaha. Kinda funny for me to like a celebrity like him when the only few that I’ve actually liked are Johnny Depp (I just loved him in Sleepy Hollow and Edward Scissorshand and I’ve been watching out for his movies since) and Dakota Fanning (‘Come out, come out wherever you are…’ gave me hives that line did and Dreamer was one of my faves).

Weird, eh? A girl who does not really obsess over celebs and stuff? I guess my ‘Barney’ and ‘Sesame Street’ obsession when I was little turned into an obsession for educational TV like Discovery and History International.

Cheers.

Here’s a fun little list I gathered to help all future visitors of my beautiful ex-city of residence dispel boredom:

Remove all the orange “modesty covers” from all the Cosmos and swimsuit issues at Ukrops (the only grocery chain store in town with a real health food section. You have to be a member of a church congregation in order to work there). Hide them in the bottom of the “Bargain Inspirational Books” bin.

Write the lyrics of songs by gay vegetarian 80’s bands on the dust of pickup trucks at the parking lot of Gander Mountain Sporting Goods.

Loudly say, “I chose life,” to the Sunday-starched family that whispers behind your back as you pay for your kid’s organic fruit roll-ups with an EBT card.

Call the many newly-razed commercial land lots in town, and say that you are a manufacturer of edible underwear who would like to start a production plant at this location.

Walk around with a laquered-up faux-hawk and Terminator shades as you wheel your child around in a grocery cart, and take spy camera pictures of people’s uneasy stares.

Wear a T-shirt that says, “I Support Gay Marriage.” Wear anything (ANYTHING) with a rainbow on it. Wear a tie (if you’re female) or a eyeshadow (if you’re a guy). Wear any vaguely Wiccan symbol at all, even something like the Proctor-Gamble logo which sort of looks like a moon and stars. Watch parents steer the kids away from you.

Overhear some kids talking to their mom at Taco Bell about how their friends are going to hell because they don’t believe in Jesus, and think Christmas is just about Santa and presents. Lean over and say, “Well, I’m Jewish and I don’t believe in Santa either. But I’ll have fun in hell opening Chanukah presents for eight days in a row!”

When an old lady hisses, “That’s MERRY CHRISTMAS to you,” when you say “Happy Holidays,” smile and repeat politely, “No… ‘Happy Holidays,’ Ma’am. I’m Jewish, and so were some of the Founding Fathers who signed our Constitution… you know, that little piece of paper that grants us all freedom of religion.”

Read right-wing bumper stickers while stuck in traffic. My favorite: “One war protester is not worth the spit of one member of the American military.” Also up on my list: “Guns Save Lives.” “You CANNOT be Catholic and pro-choice.” “I stand with President Bush.” (And will you fall with him, too?).

Count religious license places. IE: “GZUSFRK,” “PROLF,” “HESAVS,” “BLESSD…”

When cashiers asks you to “have a blessed day,” act confused and say, “As opposed to a cursed day?”

Count the number of Confederate flags you see in a day… on shirts, bikes, cars, tongue rings, can sleeves, dog sweaters…

Wonder why there are so many bumper stickers for the Paul Stefan Home for Unwed Mothers, but for some reason, you’ve never actually seen the place. Wonder why they choose a stork for their logo when the whole reason someone goes there is that they got knocked up. Wonder why “unwed” mothers have to be stashed in some home, anyway. Wonder why on earth supporting these places somehow is supposed to be empathic and empowering to single moms. Wonder if all these rabidly pro-life moms kick their pregnant teenage daughters out of the house to save face. Wonder if these places make money. Consider taking up a nicotine habit to get these thoughts out of your head.

Consider the nicotine idea more seriously. After all, there is a tobacco store on almost every block, and since this is Virginia, there’s no tax because smoking is not considered a sin. But the use of marital aids, on the other hand… that’s not only a sin, it’s illegal.

Try to pay your electric bill at a check cashing place. Get told by every place in town that they are not authorized payment centers. After the tenth place, get frustrated and be told “not to pull an attitude with us, lady.” Look online for the one random Indian deli in town that is. Find it in an abandoned parking lot on the bad side of town, in a storefront with almost no merchandise. Wonder if the place is a drug dealer front. Sort of wish it was.

Consider a drug habit.

Consider a whipped cream habit.

Count steak, rib and BBQ houses in town. Stop at 50. Count vegetarian restaurants. Find none.

Count paintball places. Find many. Count gay bars. Find none.

Call the Spotsylvania Town Center management company and say you’d like to open a Christian Marital Aids shop called “His Pleasures.” In a kiosk.

Wait 45 minutes in line at Carl’s for a drippy (but famous) old-school soft-serve ice cream cone. Forget that they only accept cash. Find a $5 bill in a compartment in your purse. Read a sign upon approaching the window that says “Sorry for the inconvenience, we are out of 1’s. Can you help us?”

Count the Starbucks in town. Use toes when you run out of fingers. Wonder how such a soulless, overmarketed chain could possibly survive when there are such amazing local java joints like Tickers and that place off Spotsy Crossing that used to be a dollar store.

Stand in front of a Christian bookstore and campaign for Equality Now.

Drive your non-transparent 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 plastics, and colored cardboard waste miles away to be recycled because the county dump and private disposal companies all just draw blank stares when you say that you actually care about this.

Get invited to play the organ in a Southern Baptist church by a total stranger who learns that you bought a synthesizer on Craigslist. (Yes, this really happened to me).

Attend a Nascar race. Pack wine coolers. Offer to spectators. Watch reactions.

Publicly consume tofu.

Drive to Fairview beach. Find out it’s not even a beach at all, but a few square feet of mosquito-infested riverbank. Have fun tossing pebbles into the water. Go home.

Spend your entire tax refund on fireworks.

Memorize the lyrics of bluegrass, country and gospel songs. Sing along to them on the radio.

Change the station, think you’re hearing the beginning of some cool Nirvana-influenced garage band. Listen and think, “Hey, see, it’s not so bad on the radio here, who is this cool new band?” Feel intrigued. Hear lyrics. “…AND HE DIED FOR YOUR SINS.” Change station again.

Try to get around without a car. Try to cross street for fifteen minutes. Consider a suit of armor.

And when you’re done having fun all day…

Run into Borders. Buy Bust, Curve, On Our Backs, random zines made by depressed college students with drug habits. Order some silver tips jasmine tea. Sit down. Relax. Sigh. Sing “Why Georgia Why.” Get a cookie or something to wash away the pain. Grab a store calendar. Hear a gay accent in the distance (occasionally) and perk up. Listen to songs that aren’t about God, hunting, blondes or trucks. Resolve to purchase a marital aid, even if you have to take out a loan and travel to Delaware for it. Promise yourself that THIS is the week you’ll get a sitter and finally try to attend that poetry slam, even if it sucks.

Oh wait… that rhymed. (See, I really do need to get to that poetry slam.)

Maybe I might even run into a vegetarian. Who doesn’t believe that orgasms obtained by any means other than the genital apparatus of an opposite-sex spouse, should be against the law.

Maybe they’ll even ask me out on a paintball date.

I can’t wait.

I have no idea if this blog is going to become a daily thing or what, but I thought I’d write

I have no idea if this blog is going to become a daily thing or what, but I thought I’d write something today, even though not much interesting happened.

I went into college today. I woke up and my mum asked if I’d be going in, and I was so tempted to say no. Thursdays are my longest days with a 8:30am start and a 3:55pm finish. And they always send the crappy single-decker bus to go home in at 3:57pm, so I have to run for it (I can’t run to save my life. I fall over…a lot. I felt up the bus stairs three times once. All on the same day.) and it’s just ugh. Annoying because we get to main bus station and all the old people glare at us because there are no seats available.

But anyway, I knew I had to go in and be a good child, so I spent my day at college. I had double English language which is always a hoot (note the sarcasm) and I handed in my article that I wrote yesterday. I’m pretty alright with it though, because it’s all creative writing, and I like to hope I’m alright at that

Sometimes people in my class talk about writing stories, but I don’t think I’ve ever said that I have a semi-popular story online. I wonder how many people would want to read it…

Oh God I bet my teacher would. That would be…mortifying, to say the least.

So I noticed I have a few of subscribers to this blog. I LOVE YOU! I think when I look back on this I’ll be able to re-live some days. =’]

I never really saw the point in a diary. I think it’s because I love to share what I’m thinking, so I always though ‘why write this when no one will read it?’ so I’m pretty sure this blog defeats that. ^_^

ANYWAY, sorry about the weird tangent there, I had a free lesson third, and it was planned that I’d be spending it with my friend from school. But when I met him, he was like *speaks in nasally voice*, “We’re going to the library to do some extra studying”. I was just like; o_O as much as that sounds like fun, I think I’m going to pass.

So I went into the student centre and bought a Mocha instead 65p for coffee/hot chocolate at college.

Mochas are awesome haha. It’s like…hot chocolate mixed with coffee. If you’ve never had one, GO GET ONE.

I then had philosophy where we talked about whether or not animals can communicate and make rational decisions, and i was like, ‘Well it’s obvious they communicate. And a cat can decide whether or not it can cross the road safely’. But everyone laughed because I still have a cold and the word ‘obvious’ came out really retarded.

I then (anyone else feel this is getting repetitive?XD) spent my lunch hour with my friends Katie and Alice at this weird politics discussion thing. IT WAS THE MOST BORING THING IN THE WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD.

The college day ended with double geography. ^_^

I sit in clear view of the guy I like. His name is Nick *blushes*. BUT I CAN’T TALK TO HIM BECAUSE I’M A SHY WEIRDO. It’s so ridiculous. D: Although we had some contact today. It went like this;

Nick: “Uh…Becca? Can you move your chair so I can get through?”

Me: “Oh! Yeah. Sorry! *Blushes*”

-_-

I’m pretty amused right now, even though I shouldn’t be. My friend has been with this guy for two days, but she doesn’t like him like she thought she did, so decided to break up with him. He’s gone proper psycho and is like ‘I LOVE YOU PLEASE DON’T LEAVE ME’ ahahaha XD

You know what the first thing I noticed when I watched New Moon was? ROBERT PATTINSON HAS HAD A NOSE JOB. My friend told me to shh when I told her though ):

I feel like listening to some good ol’ My Chem XD

I’m tired, and it’s only 7pm. Ohhh well.

I shall blog again soon

Ciao for now Xx

It felt hard to watch Taisho Yakyuu Musume. I’ve been trying to finish it since September and

It felt hard to watch Taisho Yakyuu Musume. I’ve been trying to finish it since September and now it’s the end of November. Just sad. It’s a shame because it has a lot of things which should make it a solid watch. Consistent animation, a diverse set of female characters, an interesting setting. Despite these things it was lacking and I couldn’t stay interested.

Bamboo Blade was a fun watch and what essentially made that was the interesting slice of life elements, character interactions, and at times there were those Kendo matches. Bamboo Blade was more about the character relations than it was Kendo. Kendo was an important element to the series but it was mainly something to allow the characters to grow and interact.

Taisho Yakyuu Musume does the opposite. It focuses more on the Baseball elements and practice than using it as a vehicle for character development. Don’t get me wrong, there are those slice of life elements at times but not enough to really keep me interested long. I enjoyed the romance elements too but that isn’t touched on very much either. I would have liked to see more of Koume and Saburou interact, and there was also that one guy who was interested in the glasses girl too. Those things are elements that I liked but they weren’t developed. ;_;

The setting is excellent. Watching the first episode definitely gave me a Sakura Taisen vibe. More anime seriously need to take place during the 1920s Japan. It is just a fresh setting of trolleys, Japanese and Western goods being presented in a modernizing Japan. Something not seen very often in anime. It’s all about modern and futuristic settings. Baccano! was also a fun watch purely due to it’s American 1930s setting. Anime needs more of this!

I couldn’t help but think that the characters really reminded me a lot of the Idolm@ster girls. Only visually though. I thought I was crazy honestly, but Evirus at Karmaburn refers to Taisho Yakyuu Musume as Not Idolm@ster Baseball. So, maybe I’m not so crazy afterall.

Ultimately, it is the 12 episode limit that handicaps Taisho Yakyuu Musume the most. If there were more to work with there probably would have been more character development and slice of life. I’d say if you like Baseball and anime, you should probably look into this show. You’d probably enjoy it. I didn’t because of the focus on the sports element more than the characters. Nonetheless an alright watch, and I really like the concept. Probably would go under a lot of people’s radar as something worth watching.

I dont know. Im pretty happy i have a blog. I have somewhere to post my ideas, toughts, believes, ect. Like i dont know really how to explain it. I have somewhere that is mine, noone else can take it away from me. and plus, im able to meet new people and learn about different things that goes on in my life without them bitching, nagging, and annoying the hell out of me. but i kinda am currently watching my back, i feel as if everyone is looking at me, like wtf is your problem? ohh the drama. People saying bullshit lies and acting as if im the bad guy. Well i diddnt do anything wrong. NOTHING!
everyone seems to put the blame on me, like ohh you missed so much school your so stupid, well no. Not at all. I have this thing, you might of heard of it, its called SWINE FLU, so im pretty sure you diddnt want me coughing and vomiting on you all. i have good reason. School is so boring anyways. you sit, listen, copy some notes, and get yelled at. Then repeat. like, really. this is what schools are today.
So i have Skype now, and if you want to talk, its okay. my skype name is zoeyxlynn. if you can tell, i have no life.

The thing about parents is that no matter what you do they’re never going to be satisfied with you. I told my mum the truth, and she didn’t listen/believe it, and I got a 15 minutes nag from her. I told my mum I will work hard for my math, and she says “Ya. You say that every time.”. I told my mum I’d be home late and tell her my whole schedule, and when I get back, she’ll ask “Why are you so late?”. Dear Mummy, I do love you so very much, but can you just try to believe me when I’m telling the truth? At least have some faith in me.

———-

Well. That’s over. Camp Comm meeting today was fun haha.

Today I learnt that:

Daiso is awesome at English, and Japan has happy endings for all fairy tales.

Aston’s has a side dish that should be called “Mashed potatoes with smashed porcelain plate”, and Marcus got a free meal from discovering its existence.

Sembawang Shopping Centre’s Giant has their chocolate collection arranged as written in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (according to Jie)

Ginger (Marcus’s dog) thinks I’m a lollipop ._.

Ann and I are hooked on the X-box game now T.T

I cannot shop with Deborah because it freaks us both out at how alike we are, and we never keep track of time.

There’s probably a lot more I wanted to blog about, but facebook is tempting me by sending so many emails, and I shall grant facebook its wish.

P.S. Deborah, as much as we are similar, I’m sure we have a totally different taste in boys.

After all the frolics and hot discussion on the CILIP subscriptions issue, I thought I’d turn

After all the frolics and hot discussion on the CILIP subscriptions issue, I thought I’d turn back to something more introspective. Or rather I did when I started writing this post 6 weeks ago. or was it 7. Yes a lot of books have floated by under the bridge (and that’s just in Cumbria) since then.

That said as you might have gathered from my various social networks I’ve recently moved into a new position. Two months today actually by my reckoning; although thanks to swine flu my entrance to the post was a delayed one. And the change? Well it’s been a bit of a shock to the system in some ways, and an absolute delight in others.

While I’ve functioned as a manager in all but name for many years in many different capacities, it was only at the start of this year that I actually got the title into part of my job. Now though this is my main role on a daily basis – and as I suspected it’s a very different kettle of fish to what I was doing previously. I’ve carried over some aspects of my previous post, the managerial bits, while leaving behind those elements of subject support that I used to do. But there’s also been a whole new portfolio of challenges awaiting for me; perhaps upper most among them the fact that now I’m one of THEM (be it only middle management THEM) and really no longer one of US.

I could write about how this has changed my perspectives of people I’ve known for a year or so, how my working relationships have utterly altered. Maybe I will in time, and heavens knows this blog could do with a bit more regular content. However, what I thought I’d write about is the change in my working life from a situation where, to be frank, I spent more days bored and looking around for something to do than doing something. And this isn’t a situation I like finding myself in – I’m generally only happy if I’m doing something – at home or at work – that engages me on different levels. Come to think of it I’m only really happy if I’m solving three crises at once, while trying to hold down a day job and making a pot of jam at the same time. And so it seems a move into management is just what I needed!

Why? Well those of you reading this with any kind of managerial responsibilities or experience will know that the shift from being responsible for your own work, to suddenly being responsible for many other people’s work is a big one. My early days in the post felt a lot like firefighting, and I kept stressing that I wasn’t getting my job done.

Then it struck me – firefighting and helping my team is (at least in part) my job now. There are of course things I do need to do myself, that no one but me is going to be able to do as well, and it’s taken quite some time to get to a position where I can spend time doing them. I can certainly say that no from the moment I walk through the door in the morning, to when I slink off at night, that my talents are pretty much fully engaged. It’s not just managing the staff and my own time, there’s the fact that I’m still learning so much of what my section does for the library. There are moments when I think I’ll never know it all. Maybe I won’t, but I do need to understand how, why and what the team does. Otherwise how can I make an objective judgement when someone brings me a problem? How can I advise my bosses on the situations and developments that pervade the environment my team works in? I need to develop this understanding, and so it’s one more part of my day being occupied.

So bored? Fat chance! Every day brings a new challenge, some new insight into an activity. I honestly don’t think I’ve been asked the same question twice in two months – be it from a reader, a team member or a colleague from another section. I thrive on this challenge, which does give me a slight pause when I think about the future. Will there ever come a time when I feel comfortable in the role, where everything is natural, almost runs itself? If it does, chances are thats when ennui will set in again – but have no fear, that’s the point at which I’ll start casting my eye around for something even more difficult to do…

Nothing to update because my life is dull and boring. Maybe I should update on how boring my life is. I sleep at 3am every night and wake up around 11am to 1pm. Then I say good morning to my parents and then I brush my teeth and then I have breakfast. Then I brush my teeth again and I turn on the computer and surf the net for the whole day and only leave the seat when I need to pee or bathe. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, I get off the computer early because there are nice shows on TV. There is ANTM today so that means I will be getting off the computer early. Maybe I’m going to meet Skye and Khris on Saturday because I want to spend money. Oh and my Dad will be leaving for Brunei on Monday, and he’s gonna be there for two years. ):

Also, why are there so many words for the most common of geological formations? Such as pebbles; couldn’t we just call them tiny stones or rocks? Or, perhaps the number of words there are for stones and rocks comes from society’s dissatisfaction with all the names. In that case, could we call all stones & rocks ‘Steven’? Wouldn’t the world be a lot simpler, and possibly funnier, if you could say: ‘Wait a sec, I’ve got a Steven in my shoe.’
