De acordo com matéria de Vitor Moreno para a Folha Online, o disco “Jazz Samba”, no qual os músicos Stan Getz e Charlie Byrd interpretam diversas canções da bossa nova, entrou para o Hall da Fama do Grammy:

O anúncio foi feito ontem nos Estados Unidos. O álbum foi classificado na categoria jazz.

Lançado em 1962, “Jazz Samba” tem sete músicas, das quais seis são de compositores brasileiros. São elas: “Desafinado” e “Samba de uma Nota Só”, ambas de Antônio Carlos Jobim e Newton Mendonça; “O Pato”, de Jayme Silva e Neuza Teixeira; “Samba Triste”, de Baden Powell e Billy Blanco; “É Luxo Só” e “Bahia”, ambas de Ary Barroso. Completa o disco, a música “Samba Dees Days”, composta por Charlie Byrd.

Last night’s ROOT cocktail making contest was a “spiritful” night out downtown. The local bartenders (from Bossa Nova, SOBA, Firehouse Lounge, Embery, Yo Rita and more) shook, stirred and poured the night away at Bossa Nova making some fanciful cocktail creations. The drinks included glassware from tall to small, and varied ingredients from ginger root to nutmeg to chocolate syrup. The judges, which included Rick Sebak of WQED TV, Liz Fetchin of Pittsburgh Magazine and Craig Mrusek of Dr. Bamboo, really seemed to enjoy all the drinks throughout the evening.

We sampled the different ROOT cocktails that were on the bar’s drink menu for the evening. All in all, ROOT makes a great mixer with a wide range of ingredients. While the Hard Candy cocktail (mixed with buttershots and soda) was too sweet for our tastes, The Root Squared (mixed with root beer) was delightfully refreshing. I can’t remember the name of my other drink unfortunately, but it was mixed with Myers rum and lemonade…Awesome! Depending on your mixers, the liqueur is great for summertime sipping or warming up a winter’s night. We can’t wait to get a bottle and experiment at home. And of course, what’s not to like about all the free food last night too. From quesadillas to sushi to some sort of crab ball things…excellent. Thanks to Bossa Nova for hosting this cool event, and thanks to ROOT for sponsoring it.

Quanto ao Lucas Santanna, ele tem sido elogiadíssimo. Parece mesmo com o Caetano Veloso, o que é um super privilégio para mim ainda que não soe original. Poet, film critic, diplomat, and musician, Vinicius de Moraes is a Brazilian hero. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he was a passionate bohemian who will be remembered for his lasting impact on the bossa nova.

In the mid 50’s he penned the lyrics to Chega de Saudade. The song, composed by his good friend Tom Jobim, was recorded in 1959 by João Gilberto’s and would be the spark that started the bossa nova revolution in Brazil and later the world.

Also in 1959 Vinicius’ musical Orfeu da Conçeição, a modern Brazilian version of the greek tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice, was adapted to the silver screen by French director Marcel Camus. Orfeu Negro won the Palm d’Or at Cannes, Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film. The music written by Vinicius and Jobim helped continue to bring bossa nova to the international scene.

In 1962 Vincius would write the lyrics to perhaps the most recognizable Brazilian song A Garota de Ipanema (The Girl from Ipanema – See previous post). The music was composed by Tom Jobim and made famous by João Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz in 1964.

He would continue to write, record, and tour extensively throughout 60’s and 70’s, collaborating with the brilliant bossa nova guitarists Baden Powell and Toquinho. A personal favorite album is Os Afros Sambas, a Vinicius-Powell collaboration in 1966 that is a break from bossa nova. It was influenced by Afro Brazilian religions of which was of deep interest to Vinicius at the time.

Vinicius once called described whiskey as “a man’s best friend – it’s a bottled up dog”. It would eventually turn on him late in his life adding to health complications. He died at age 66 in Rio having married nine times.

De costas para quem?!

O Rio de Janeiro é um dos estados mais turísticos do Brasil, com suas belas praias; Cristo Redentor; Pão de Açúcar, a população alegre e contagiante, e recentemente, tem a capital escolhida para sediar as Olimpíadas de 2016…Em contraste, se destacam a violência urbana e o aumentos de favelas. Talvez esses sejam os fatores principais que influenciaram o cenário musical do Rio de Janeiro de antigamente e dos tempos presentes. Dentre as várias manifestações artísticas do Rio, lembramos do samba, da bossa nova e  do funk carioca.

O samba (considerado Patrimônio da Humanidade pela Unesco), derivado de um tipo de dança de raízes africanas, originou-se na Bahia, porém foi migrado pelos negros para o Rio de Janeiro, onde de fato nasceu e teve seu ritmo desenvolvido. O álbum considerado o primeiro samba foi   “Pelo Telefone”, gravado em 1917 . O disco  era uma composição coletiva de músicos que participavam das festas da casa de sambistas da  tia Ciata, mas acabou registrada por Donga e Mauro de Almeida. A partir daí, o ritmo se popularizou e ganhou adeptos do país inteiro. Surgiriam grandes nomes do samba, entre alguns como Ismael Silva, Cartola, Ari Barroso, Noel Rosa, Ataulfo Alves, Wilson Batista, Geraldo Pereira, Zé Kéti, Ciro Monteiro e citando os mais atuais: Nelson Cavaquinho, Elton Medeiros, Paulinho da Viola, Martinho da Vila. Com base no samba,outras formas musicais ganharam denominações próprias, como o samba de gafieira, o samba enredo, o samba de breque, o samba canção, o samba rock, o partido alto, o pagode, entre outros. Junto com a bossa nova, o samba foi um dos principais difusores da música brasileira no exterior.

A bossa nova é ,definitivamente, o gênero musical brasileiro mais conhecido no mundo, seus principais percussores foram Vinícius de Morais, Antônio Carlos Jobin, João Gilberto e Luiz Bonfá. Surgida por volta do ano de 1958, na capital do RJ,  o termo era apenas relacionado a um novo modo de cantar e tocar samba naquela época, mas renovou as harmonias e arranjos utilizados até então. Compositores, instrumentistas e cantores intelectualizados, amantes do jazz americano e da música erudita formavam construíram os pilares da bossa nova. Era criticada pelo engajamento nos problemas sociais, embora bem recebida pelo público jovem.  Foram destacados,especialmente, os  jovens da classe média como autores da música de protesto, entre eles: Marcos e Paulo Sérgio Vale, Geraldo Vandré e Théo de Barros, Rui Guerra, Oduvaldo Viana Filho, Carlos Lyra e Sérgio Ricardo. Não tão popular hoje em dia, percebe-se a bossa nova como influências na música brasileira atual e internacional.

O funk carioca, é diferente do funk originário dos Estados Unidos nos anos 1960. Apesar de ser criado nas batidas do funk americano, o funk carioca começou a ser tocado a partir de improvisos em cima de bases dançantes, onde as canções são essencialmente de conteúdo erótico. Criado em meados da década de 1990, mas já tendo raízes na década anterior com os bailes funks influenciados pelo Miami Bass, ritmo derivado do hip hop que começava a fazer barulho nos Estados Unidos com uma batida de dança acelerada e pelo conteúdo sexualmente explícito das letras. Um dos principais protagonistas do movimento no Rio foi DJ Marlboro. Ainda no início, as canções abordavam a violência e as favelas. Um ano marcante foi o de 1995, quando o funk teve sua ascensão no Brasil, artistas como Claudinho e Buchecha, Cidinho e Doca tocavam em várias rádios e programas de tv. Vertentes do funk foram surgindo: funk melody e o “proibidão”, esse, normalmente, com temas vinculados ao tráfico e  forte conotação sexual. A partir dos anos 2000 o funk se consolida como um ritmo popular entre as classes sociais não só do Rio de Janeiro,mas no restante do Brasil. Se destacam no gênero: Tati Quebra Barraco, Perlla, Mc Leozinho, Jaula das Gostozudas, Mc Sabãozinho, Bonde do Tigrão, Bonde do Ratão entre outros nomes bizarros que fazem parte da música popular brasileira da atualidade.

O Rio de Janeiro recebeu três edições do Rock in Rio,depois migrou para países da Europa com o mesmo nome(!) Talvez o festival volte para sua cidade original em 2011 ;

É a cidade natal do maior compositor de música erudita brasileira, Heitor Villa Lobos;

O pioneirismo em trazer para a MPB o estilo soul de cantar. Com a voz grave e carregada de Tim Maia, carioca que tornou-se um dos grandes nomes da música brasileira, conquistando grande vendagem e consagrando sucessos.

Foi de lá que saíram as bandas: Barão Vermelho, For Fun, Maldita, Blitz e  Zeca Pagodinho….Todas essas com seus públicos e gerações diferentes, provando que a história musical de um local não limita seus artistas, afinal, a tecnologia é mais uma aliada para conhecer sons ignorados por quem busca algo diferente do que está acostumado a fazer e/ou ouvir.

Maria Bethânia Viana Teles Veloso (Santo Amaro da Purificação, Bahia, 18 de junho de 1946) é uma cantora brasileira que tem a marca de ser a segunda artista feminina em vendagem de discos do Brasil, sendo a maior da MPB, com 26 milhões de cópias, só perdendo para Xuxa Meneghel, que tem mais de 32 milhões de discos vendidos. Atende pela alcunha de Abelha-rainha por causa do primeiro verso da música que dá nome ao LP Mel de 1979. Considerada por muitos brasileiros uma das maiores cantoras da história do Brasil. É irmã caçula do compositor Caetano Veloso e da poetisa e escritora Mabel Velloso.

Não gosto da tv aberta. Exceto alguns programas como CQC, Pânico, Toma lá de cá, Aline e as novelas do Manoel Carlos. Desde Por Amor de 1997 eu já sentia um certo gosto pelo escritor. Mas foi um ex-namorado, super noveleiro que instigou meu vício pelo autor, no ano de 2003 com Mulheres Apaixonadas.

Lembro bem que morava em uma cidade do interior do Japão, e o único jeito de assistir a novela era alugando fitas gravadas em uma loja de produtos brasileiros. Difíceis mas bons tempos. Hoje, ainda longe do Brasil, vejo tudo por streaming no próprio canal da globo ( graças a um amigo que me deixa logar com o nome e senha dele ).

As novelas do Manoel são encantadoras. As cenas gravadas no exterior, o Rio, a bossa nova, as Helenas são sua marca registrada.

Viver a Vida está longe de ser a melhor novela do Manoel, mas estou acompanhando mesmo assim. Mas o destaque mesmo etá longe dos protaginistas. Quem eu adoro é a sincera Izabel ( Adriana Birolli ). Mesmo fazendo papel de má, ela é verdadeira, realista. Com ela não tem falsidade.

United States has Rock’n’Roll, jazz and Blues as traditional music. Spain has the Flamenco, Argentina has the tango and Brazil has the Bossa Nova. Unfortunately Italian popular music is the LISCIO.
In every single bar or dance hall of my country, you can easily hear this kind of music. No matter if you are in the South, in the center or in the west of the Italian peninsula, LISCIO persecutes you in any corner of the country.
The most sad aspect of this situation is that if you are an Italian musician, the only thing you can do to earn some money is to play this music.
And I’m one of those musicians who played Liscio.

“Rimini, Rimini, Rimini: The soundtrack of this post”.

It happened during my last year at “La Sapienza” University in Rome.
I needed money for my studies, and at that time the only thing that I was able to do very well was play the guitar.
A friend of mine gave me the opportunity to meet Marco Napoli, the leader of a little Liscio ensemble that was pretty popular in my county.
The name of this orchestra was one of the worst names you can give to a dance-band: “The Cocktail”.
When I met Marco, the first thing that I asked him was: “Why have you chosen this name for your orchestra?”
“You know” he answered me, “when you play Liscio you have to communicate to the audience a feeling of happiness, and a name like The Cocktail suggests to the people something full of colour, of vitality and joy….in other words it suggests Happiness”.
“Does it?” I asked doubtfully.
“Yes…Hey wait a moment” he said, “have you got any problem with the name of my band?”
“No, no. I love it, I was just curious about it. That’s all”.
I WAS recruited.

We played for a whole year in a Balera (it is the Italian word to indicate a Liscio Dance Hall) called “Pierrot”.
We used to arrive at the club around nine p.m. and after the sound check, we opened the show with a classic Raul Casadei’s song: “Rimini, Rimini” (Raul Casadei is one of the most important authors in the Liscio tradition).
The crowd started to dance from the first note of that song.
People who love to spend the night in a balera, basically do two kinds of things above all: dance AND drink wine.
This is the reason why often some of them would fall down to the ground completely DRUNK.

The floor of a balera is literary a pool of sweat, and the owners usually strew it with talcum powder to create a grip for the dancer’s feet; but if you are drunk nothing can save you from falling, even a good “grip”.
I hated the balera’s patrons.
They didn’t show the musicians any kind of respect, and every night someone would join us on the stage (while we were still playing), and say something like: “Have you got Romantica Parigi?” or “Have you got Mutandine di Seta Nera?”; they didn’t ask for a song, they ordered a song, they treated us as if we were waiters instead musicians.
Generally at midnight we stopped playing and the crowd stopped dancing: that was the moment for the Pasta (the balera’s owners used to offer to the customers and the musicians some horrible pasta cooked by their resident chef).
While the customers ate, Marco remained on the stage to announce the winning numbers extracted for the balera’s lottery (each number was followed by a drum roll loop); it was the main event of the night and those who attended it could win: a Prosciutto di Parma as first prize, a shape of Parmigiano Reggiano as second prize and a bottle of wine as third prize.

After the Lottery the show started again and we kept playing until one o’clock (more or less).
At that hour most of the dancers began to go back home, except the ones that we called: “Tiratardi”; these were the kind of tireless people who could dance from dust till dawn.
We invented a stratagem to set us free from them: we accelerated the bpm of the songs; in doing so they were forced to dance very, very fast.
Generally they collapsed to the floor completely strengthless after two or three minutes.
When all of them went away we descended from the stage.
I used to massage my back and smoke a cigarette while Marco and the other guys, compiled the bourderaux writing down the songs that we had played.
The most exciting moment of the night was certainly when the owner paid the orchestra: one hundred euro for each of us, not a bad wage!
Yes, despite everything, it was pretty cool to play LISCIO.

Llevan editados cuatro elepés, los dos primeros en 2001 y el ultimo Declaration Of Dependence lo han editado en octubre pasado, de él he seleccionado los dos temas de más abajo. The best work so far from Rosalia De Souza — a session that features production and guitar from bossa legend Roberto Menescal, and a sound that’s deeper and even more classic than any of Rosalia’s other work! Most of the instrumentation here is in an older acoustic mode — piano, percussion, and horns arranged by Menescal with that beautifully lighter than air style that he first pioneered in the 60s — an approach that lets Rosalia’s vocals drift along on wonderfully gentle rhythms, and dominate the record even more than before. Given that the set’s on Schema, there’s still a nicely rhythmic component to most numbers — but overall, the record’s a bold step forward even for the label — similar to the all-acoustic move made by Nicola Conte in his own recordings! Marcos Valle joins in on vocals on “Que Bandeira”, and other tunes include “Onde Anda O Meu Amor”, “Voz Da Lapa”, “Jogo De Roda”, “Rio De Janeiro”, “Mar Amar”, “Um Novo Dia”, and “Vivo Sonhando”.

Who knew bossa-nova covers of new wave singles would prove to be so enticing?  With “Dance With Me”, the French band Nouvelle Vague revives a seminal track from the long-forgotten Lords of the New Church.  The result is some very pleasant ear candy with some pretty lady vocals overtop some breezy guitars and percussion.

15 years have passed since I first started listening to swedish folk singer songwriter Lisa Ekdahl. At that time it was more folk than jazz, more upbeat than melancholic, more swedish than english. Since then, Ekdahl has flirted with music styles within the bossa nova genre as well as jazz and pop. ”Give me that knowing smile” is the latest album released by Lisa Ekdahl which is her first album written and performed entirely in English.

Kicking off this unusually short album of only 36 minutes is the song with the same title as the album “Give me that knowing smile”, which immediately sets the mood for the rest of the album. Her charming, youthful yet angel like and unique voice creates a feeling of serenity, immediately putting the audience at ease as well as it adds a certain sincerity in her songs. Taking us through songs such as “One Life” and “The world keeps turning”, one can trace influences of jazz, pop and folk mixing in with light melodies and beautiful lyrics.

Lisa has with this album managed to evolve through her music yet not straying away too far from her unmistakable sound. She proves with this album that Sweden is capable of producing more than economical clothes and mass produced furniture, not that this is bad in anyway, it is just nice to know that there is more to Sweden than H&M and Ikea.

Lisa Ekdahl-Give me that knowing smile

Hace dos semanas, el destino (leasé una amiga) quiso que compartiera una comida con Tamara Colver. Dueña de una simpatía arrolladora, se presentó como cantante de jazz  y a lo largo de la cena reseñó un curioso itinerario que partiendo de su Inglaterra natal la llevó primero a Suecia , donde residió algunos años, hasta que su corazón quiso que viniera a Córdoba para vivir durante mucho tiempo en Villa General Belgrano…

Anoche estuve en un recital que ofreció con su banda, llamada So What! (¿Y Qué?) en homenaje Miles Davis.  La integran Alberto Saturno (batería), Juan Carlos Ciallella (piano y excelentes comentarios sobre los orígenes del jazz) y Martín Rodríguez (bajo). Interpretaron clásicos del jazz y de la bossa nova  y mágicamente transportaron a su público a Nueva Orleans,  Chicago, Río de Janeiro…

En la página de So What! podés escuchar su versión de clásicos como Moonglow, Night and day, Funny Valentine, Laura, The theme from the Pink Panther, But not for me . I get asked a lot of the same questions : how do you look so good, and, what downtempo records would you recommend ? One of the best mix of the genre is The outernational sound by Washington duo Thievery corporation. Although generally regarded as producers, Thievery Corporation have also got great ears for a tune and an extensive record collection. The Outernational Sound is best likened to a branded downbeat compilation such as Back to Mine or Late Night Tales. Beginning with David Snell’s “International Flight”, a jazzy bass-driven piece, the mix goes through all manner of styles, dips and troughs until it ends with the roots reggae of Delroy Wilson on “Better Must Come”. Intelligent drum&bass is well represented well by Thunderball’s “Vai Vai”; classic breaks come in the shape of Breakestra’s “Cramp Your Style”, introduced by the classic sax loop made famous by the 45 King’s “900 Number”; and the big tune is Mathar’s 1994 Acid Jazz reworking of “Indian Vibes” which features Paul Weller on electric sitar.

The Outernational Sound doesn’t hold many surprises, it is what many would expect from a Thievery Corporation mix album, but this is no bad thing. The songs are well chosen, the mixing, although unadventurous, is solid and the song selection is diverse and well considered. A good stop of spine tingling funky music !

The Troublemakers : Chez Roger boîte funk [Doubts & Convictions : 2001 : Guidance]

Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim (January 25, 1927 in Rio de Janeiro – December 8, 1994 in New York), also known as Tom Jobim, was a Grammy Award-winning Brazilian songwriter, composer, arranger, singer, and pianist/guitarist. A primary force behind the creation of the bossa nova style, Jobim is acknowledged as one of the most influential popular composers of the 20th century. His songs have been performed by many singers and instrumentalists within Brazil and internationally. 

A key event in making Jobim’s music known in the English speaking world was his collaboration with the American jazz saxophonist Stan Getz, João Gilberto and Gilberto’s wife at the time, Astrud Gilberto, which resulted in two albums, Getz/Gilberto (1963) and Getz/Gilberto Vol. 2 (1964). The release of Getz/Gilberto created a bossa nova craze in the United States, and subsequently internationally. Stan Getz had previously recorded Jazz Samba with Charlie Byrd (1962), and Jazz Samba Encore! with Luiz Bonfá (1964). Jobim wrote many of the songs on Getz/Gilberto, which became one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time, and turned Astrud Gilberto, who sang on “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Corcovado”, into an international sensation.
